Chris was born and raised in the small farming and ranching community of Nanton, Alberta. It was clearly established early on in his life that he would not be raised with pity or sympathy. Within hours of being born, his grandma was informed that his parents gave birth to a healthy baby boy; however, he was missing both arms and both legs. Without any hesitation whatsoever she simply pointed out the fact that, “Bruce (his father) never did finish anything he started”.Chris attribute that dry and quirky sense of humor as the reason why he can honestly say that growing up without arms and legs was quite easy. His family could have treated his disability like a total tragedy but instead chose to take it all in stride and make the best of the situation. After all, he still had a good head on his shoulders… and with that, anything is possible. In this episode we ‘get into it' with Chris about: -What it was like growing up without arms and legs-His theories on life-His motivation and message -Awkward conversations in public-Travelling to other countries with a disability -Having a healthy mindset
It was an issue many thought had been settled, but the debate over open-pit mining in Alberta's Eastern Slopes has been reignited. In 2020, public outcry forced the province to put a moratorium on nearly all new coal exploration and development in the Eastern Slopes. However, Alberta's energy minister, Brian Jean, lifted the moratorium last month to help reduce regulatory confusion around coal mining. Rancher Kelly Hall, owner of the Timber Ridge conservation site west of Nanton, worries about the potential contamination of the water supply if mining proceeds. "We're extremely concerned because of the health risks that are involved," says Hall. "Selenium and other heavy metals like arsenic could be present in our water system."
On today's show: homes that were acquired for a train line that may never exist are now being demolished. We hear from a former resident of the River Run townhomes in Eau Claire; we take you to the Foothills west of Nanton to hear from a ranching family about coal mining's potential return to the Eastern Slopes; we talk about Robbie Burns Day with the organizers of Kilts for a Cause.

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - The audio version of this opens with a short clip of Jemma Hicken singiing ‘Skim Milk.' I was hoping it would be a new version, with her and Robbie Bankes singing together, but it looks like the only place to hear that will be in Mansons Hall at 7:00 on Tuesday July 2, 2024. Jemma and Robbie are just finishing a month long tour of Alberta and BC. They were about to play at Campbell River's Spirit Square when Cortes Currents reached them yesterday. They will be on Read Island today. Cortes Currents: How long have you been playing together? Jemma Hicken: “We had one show together last November. Then we've just had our tour, so mostly since May 30th.” Robbie Banks: “We started in Alberta, at Dinosaur Provincial Park, and then we worked our way back through southern Alberta and then through southern BC. Played in Calgary, Nanton and the small town of Parson. Then we went down to the Kootenays to the Nelson area for a few days and then back up to the Okanagan.” Jemma Hicken: “We played at a tree planting camp in Midway.” Cortes Currents: How many tree planters did you have in the audience? Jemma Hicken: “42.” Robbie Banks: “We thought it would be the biggest party show of our tour, but they were all very tired (laughter) and slept on the floor.” Jemma Hicken: “It was really fun.” Cortes Currents: Other highlights of the tour? Jemma Hicken: “I think one of my highlights was the first show that we played because we were in the Badlands and I'd never seen them before. It was really picturesque and it was exciting to go there for the first time.” Robbie Bankes: “We had some really great turnouts at a few of the house shows, which was really fun. We weren't expecting to play for that many people, but there were some house shows with 50 or 60 people, which was really nice.” “The whole thing was a highlight. We had really planned our driving days well. I was worried about long drives and stress, but it was very relaxing for the most part, which was a big surprise.” Jemma Hicken: “It was a big surprise, it felt almost like a vacation.” Robbie Bankes: “We got to see a whole bunch of different things and meet a whole bunch of different people and …” Jemma Hicken: “We got along.” Robbie Bankes: “Yeah, and we got along, which was also a surprise.” (laughter) Cortes Currents: So are you playing in Campbell River? Jemma Hicken: “Yeah, we're playing in Campbell River in an hour and a half. Then we are going to Read Island tomorrow, to play a show. Our last show of the tour is on Cortes next Tuesday. It's going to be at Manson's Hall with our friend Sam Tudor, who's amazing. I feel just totally excited about this show because Robby and Sam are two of my favourite local songwriters. I feel honoured to be sharing a show with them on Cortes.” Robbie Bankes: “Sam's a real up and comer. He's maybe one of the next big things in Canadian music, I would say. So it's really exciting that he wanted to come to Cortes. It'll be really fun, hopefully a good turnout, Sam puts on a great show every time I've seen him, so it'll be really fun to see that show.” Jemma Hicken: “There's going to be lots of storytelling.”
In this one, the guys consider credit card fraud, try to solve the slow play problem, and congratulate Ryan on finding a new foursome. To support 65 Roses in Nanton, please visit: https://cysticfibrosis.crowdchange.ca/76444 Or @tyleryoubetcha on instagram, Thank you

In this episode Laura is once more joined by Hetti Nanton, Joanna Simpson's best friend and chair of the national domestic violence charity, Refuge. In the aftermath of Jo's brutal death, and following the previous in-depth interview, Hetti had lingering questions she wanted answered including, as Jo's best friend, why didn't she know Jo was at risk? Why didn't she know the risks were escalating? Why didn't she convince Jo to protect herself? In this authentic and honest conversation Laura answers those questions through the lens of Jo's case, deconstructing the at-times hard to spot coercively controlling behaviours as well as highlighting what can be done to help a loved one who might be in a similar situation to Jo. Laura is frequently asked how to help someone who is being abused and oftentimes in the wake of a murder, family members who have met Laura say, ‘if only we had met you before.' Be prepared for Dr. Kimberly Berens' extraordinarily important message regarding learning disabilities! In the US, 20% of kids are considered to have a learning disability of some kind. Dr. Berens explains in Episode 14 of the podcast that only a tiny fraction of children—less than 1%—have a real neurological impairment. This suggests that more kids are being labeled with learning disabilities that are Explanatory Fictions, as opposed to measuring learning across time and assessing for skill deficits that account for why a child struggles with reading or other learning. This episode explores the reasons behind children's academic difficulties, the truth behind neuropsychological testing, and the damaging effects that the DSM-5 learning disability labeling of children has. Dr. Berens explains that labels that children are given are predominantly a result of ineffective instructional environments as opposed to a made up reason for what is occurring in the brain. Most importantly, Dr. Berens explains what we can do to disrupt this vicious cycle and improve children's learning abilities. She explains that for the majority of children, “school does not work” and why. She makes it clear that she is not blaming teachers, but rather that teachers need explicit training in behavior science and effective teaching practices. You'll hear Dr. Berens' real anger at a professional that after testing a student's performance on one occasion, then makes a profound leap to explain that the reason for the performance is due to something in the brain that cannot be measured, and that there is no scientific support for the label given to the child. Dr. Berens then reviews a case study of a student with a Neuropsychological Report versus the type of report that a Precision Teacher would produce, to look at skill deficits a child has to account for their reading challenges, as opposed to a hypothetical construct of why the student performed badly on a test one time. Dr. Berens is a scientist-educator, a precision teacher, and the founder of Fit Learning. She is also the author of the book, Blind Spots: Why Students Fail... and the Science that Can Save Them. They've never been validated in a scientific way. They're all hypothetical.” 19:46 “Performance and learning are two profoundly different things. Performance is a measure of a child's behavior at one time. Learning is the measurement of behavior over time. That's the only way learning can be evaluated. It's a process.” 23:02 “Not only do we have data from the United States on the profound ineffectiveness of this, but we have global data from across the globe, schools don't work for the majority of kids.” 25:17 Children learn how to cheat at a young age because, once again, schools do not care about the process. Schools care about the performance on one test, and then they move on.” 32:46 "So we know in behavioral science that learning is best defined as the change in behavior over a period of time.” 1:14:32 “Being a scientist is about telling the truth. Period. It's about finding an objective truth and then telling the truth about what was found.”

The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
A wide-ranging conversation on the topic of domestic abuse. Hetti sheds light on sobering statistics, attitudes and behaviours and describes the challenges presented by COVID lockdowns and how new technologies are impacting the field. In England and Wales, around 2 women a week are killed by a current or former partner, and 1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lifetime. The problem goes beyond domestic violence. As Hetti points out, coercive control is the dark side of domestic abuse and often leads to the worst outcomes. Refuge is an organisation helping those who experience domestic abuse. They run the National Domestic Abuse Helpline and also have deployed a Tech Abuse Team, who support women who are experiencing online abuse and other tech-related abuse. Innovations in technology present serious challenges – innovations leading to the miniaturisation of surveillance technology, for instance, or software that can compromise WiFi connectivity and remotely lock doors and override temperature control and other features in one's own home. This episode explores domestic abuse from various angles and provides invaluable information on the state of affairs and opportunities for improvement. Chris Koch doesn't let limitations or obstacles stand in his way. Despite being born without arms and legs, Koch grew up like any other small-town kid — playing road hockey, causing mischief at school, and helping out on his family farm. Neither he or his family treated his disability like a tragedy, and instead used it to fuel his dreams. Today, Koch is a motivational speaker who inspires his audiences to continually challenge themselves and build the life they dream of. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Koch was raised in the small farming and ranching community of Nanton, Alberta. Early on, he learned that he would not be raised with pity or sympathy. Sure, he had to do things a little differently and some tasks took him a little longer to complete than others, but he was determined to be just like the rest and was always treated just like the rest. After all, he still had a good head on his shoulders and with that, anything is possible. Koch loves sharing his story and spreading his message of, “If I Can…” An avid traveller, marathoner, and farmer, his presentation reflects his full life. Simply put, Koch says, if I can do what I've done so far in my life, what's stopping others from doing the same? Chris Koch - If I Can TedX Talk Chris Koch - If I Can - Home | Facebook

In tonight's episode we kicked off our Power Couples theme with Popp & Susan. They're no strangers to the show as they've both individually been guests on the BLAZE THE LION PODCAST back in Season 1. For this episode I was joined by, my lovely co-host and life partner, Tamiko Chambers. I must say it was tons of laughs and tons of love. Popp spoke about the power of patience and consistency when looking for a partner. Susan encouraged women to lead with love and not with lust. Part of what makes them a Power Couple is that they both have strong movements in the community. Popp is a music CEO and advocate for positive hiphop while Susan is a non-profit founder and advocate for stopping gun violence. That's 2 powerful visionaries committed to serving and uplifting their community thus changing the world. Episode 58 was inspiring to the singles people while being a fresh reminder of love to those in relationships. Whatever you are doing, stop and take 30 minutes out of your day for one of the most inspiring and uplifting podcast episodes I have had the pleasure of recording. Today's guest, Chris Koch, was born in the small farming and ranching community of Nanton in Alberta, Canada. Despite being born without arms and legs, it's an understatement to say he has lived a full and active life. Growing up, he helped on the family farm and participated in sports, including baseball, soccer and snowboarding. In recent years, Koch has shared his story worldwide, spreading his message of “If I Can…” encouraging others to make the most out of life regardless of their situation. He constantly seeks out new adventures and challenges, conveying his message by example. He has travelled the globe extensively, often solo, crossing off bucket-list items, including bungee-jumping and swimming with sharks. Koch has also embarked on several fundraising challenges, including climbing all 1,776 stairs of the CN Tower and completing the Calgary Marathon.Watch Chris's incredible TEDx talk here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftgxQYPWjX8Read more about Chris on his website - http://www.ifican.ca/

These intimate conversations will bring the Western Spirit alive as we countdown to Stampede by highlighting local women who have made significant strides for womankind. *
In this episode, we got to speak with CEO and Artist among many other titles, Lamont "Popp Da Rippa" Nanton. This here is a man with numerous hats day to day. He's an activist heavily involved in his community. So we jumped into his experiences with The Circle of Brotherhood. I've seen this group of men involved in helping ex-cons vote again, they've marched with Trayvon Martin's mother and others impacted by gun violence and so much more. Lamont or "Popp Da Rippa" is also an hiphop artist who've I had the pleasure in performing along side in various festivals, clubs and even prisons. As May's theme is Entrepreneurship, we were able to hear and learn about the multitudes of hours, the dedication and patience it takes be a CEO of an entertainment company to video director to logo designer to artist and more. How he does it all and still manages to be an active father to his daughters is commendable. It was in the early predawn that Pilot Officer Richard Pryce Hughes crashed his aircraft on the heathland a little less than 500 yards from where I live. That was 78 years ago and I was yet to be born and where my house is was still a pine covered heathland. A marker has been erected to show the location of the crash and as we approach the 11th of the 11th my wife or I place a cross on the small monument in remembrance, lest we forget. The heathland upon which Pilot Officer Richard Pryce Hughes crashed. RCAF recruitment poster. The Handley Page Halifax. A painting depicting a 1,000 bomber raid. The 10 Squadron winged arrow - approved by King George VI in September 1937. The Bomber Command memorial depicting a typical crew. A Halifax during a raid. The fate of a heavy bomber hit by flak. The Bristol Blenheim. The De Havilland Mosquito. The graves of the two brave Hughes cousins. The Canadian memorial to their bomber crews at Nanton. The marker placed in memory of Pilot Officer Richard Pryce Hughes. Each year as we approach the 11th of the 11th my wife or I place a cross on the marker in remembrance... lest we forget.
