Since the recording of this episode, myself and other folks involved in the pro Palestine, end the Genocide movement have been approached by members of police intelligence officers from both the Calgary Police Service and the RCMP. They've approached most of us under the guise of "building community". Due to the RCMP's continued violence against indigenous people of Canada and the world, I refused to speak with them. If you're wondering whether you have to speak with them, you do not. No matter how nice they seem to be. It's always your choice in this country. This week, our friend and regular guest, Wesam stops by and we talk about the continuous genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestine, ongoing exploitation of African countries, protesting even though it might feel overwhelming, police violence in the name of state security, and many other subjects. We talk about the bogus charges the Calgary Police Service laid against him. How through constant pressure and fighting in court, he has had some conditions removed while awaiting trial. The Calgary Police Service has unlimited funds to punish anyone standing up against oppression. In the end we know the police service are performing for the cameras as they always do - as we approach the one year anniversary of the brutal attacks by both Calgary and Edmonton police services on unarmed students and supporters, including women and children. These departments have sold out the people of Alberta. Thank you for coming back on my friend. We appreciate all of the your work and presence in the community. The people united, will never be defeated.
Each and every Monday we invite experts in the law to pull up a seat and discuss the week's biggest crime and justice stories. In today's Round Table of Justice Evan is joined by Dale McFee, Chief of the Edmonton Police Service and Mark Neufeld, Chief of the Calgary Police Service to discuss demand on police services.

October 26, 2015. Calgary, Alberta. Lee Antoni, the husband of 31-year old Amanda Antoni, returns home, from a weekend trip and discovers Amanda's body lying in a pool of blood inside their basement. Two days earlier, a phone call between Amanda and Lee had abruptly cut off and since her broken cell phone is found on the floor, police initially believe that Amanda was attacked and her death was a homicide. However, after failing to turn up any strong suspects or forensic evidence pointing towards an outside party, investigators start to consider the possibility that Amanda actually suffered an accidental fatal fall down the stairs. Was Amanda Antoni the victim of foul play or was her death nothing more than a tragic accident? In this episode of Bend Don't Break, Courtney Luxen from the Calgary Police Service shares her journey of overcoming functional neurological disorder (FND) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She initially joined the police service with a background in sports medicine but fell in love with the idea of becoming a cop after seeing a female officer in action. Courtney experienced various physical symptoms, including uncontrollable blinking, breathing difficulties, and loss of motor control. After a long and challenging recovery process, she returned to work in a part-time capacity and now advocates for mental health and wellness within the police service. Takeaways Seeking therapy and regular check-ins with a mental health professional are essential for everyone, especially those in high-stress professions like policing. The appellant, Trevor Ian James Lindsay, is a constable with the Calgary Police Service. While processing an arrestee, an altercation occurred between the appellant and the arrestee that left the latter with serious injuries. The appellant was charged with aggravated assault under s. 268 of the Criminal Code. At trial, the appellant's defence included s. 25 of the Criminal Code, which protects peace officers from liability related to their lawful use of force. The trial judge concluded that s. 25 did not protect the appellant from criminal liability for his actions. A majority of the Court of Appeal agreed. However, Wakeling J.A., in dissent, would have held that the trial judge erred in concluding that the prosecution had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the appellant's actions constituted an assault, and also that the trial judge erred in concluding that s. 25 did not apply. Wakeling J.A. would have allowed the appeal and ordered a new trial. Argued Date 2023-12-14 Keywords Criminal Law — Defences — Use of force by peace officer — Protection of peace officers — Whether the majority of the Court of Appeal of Alberta erred in upholding the trial judge's decision that s. 25 of the Criminal Code did not protect the appellant from criminal liability — Whether the majority of the Court of the Appeal erred in upholding the trial judge's decision that the prosecution had proven the elements of aggravated assault beyond a reasonable doubt — Criminal Code, s. 25. In this episode, Mitch Hardington from the Calgary Police Service shares his experience with PTSD and his journey to recovery. Mitch recounts a traumatic call where he found a man who had cut his own throat and the impact it had on Mitch's mental health. He emphasizes the importance of seeking help and therapy, including the use of EMDR therapy. Mitch also discusses the concept of post-traumatic growth and how he has found a new identity outside of being a police officer. He shares his reintegration strategy for returning to work and encourages others to live authentically and take control of their own lives. Takeaways: Seeking help and therapy is crucial for dealing with PTSD and other mental health challenges. EMDR therapy can be effective in processing traumatic experiences and reducing emotional attachment to the memory. Post-traumatic growth is possible, and individuals can use their experiences as an opportunity for personal growth and self-improvement. Reintegration into work should be done gradually and with a plan in place to ensure a successful transition. Episode 295: On the afternoon of December 20, 1974, a storekeeper in Calgary, Alberta, alerted the police about a customer, Philippe Laurier Gagnon, 26, who became aggressive after being denied the sale of airplane glue. The individual fled, and police pursued him to his residence two blocks away. When officers approached the suspect's residence, they were met with gunfire. Additional police, more than 130 officers, arrived to find the suspect armed with two rifles rifle in a garage. Gagnon refused to come out. A shootout ensued, resulting in the death of Detective Boyd Davidson, 43, after being shot in the neck. Six other officers were wounded by gunfire, and several others were injured. In this episode I sat down with former police officer turned entrepreneur, Nick Motycka. He shared with me openly about his experience with Psilocybin and how it forever changed his healing journey and life! Nick grew up in Alberta with a father who was a member of the RCMP. This along with his wounded inner child had a major influence on his law enforcement career choice. Nick went on to spend his entire adult life, 23 years, in various enforcement-related positions; security, loss prevention, bylaw services, Canada Customs, Court and Prisoner Services, as a regular member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and finally as a member of the Calgary Police Service. Nick spent time on the street with both agencies, in a Crime Reduction Unit, Drug Unit, Drug Undercover Street Team, Gang Suppression Team and finally a short stint in the Public and Media Relations Unit before his breakthrough, formally known as a breakdown, on September 16th, 2020. Nick was diagnosed with PTSD and set off on a journey to finally process the traumas collected during his career in law enforcement. A year and half in, countless psychologist and occupational therapist appointments later, he was able to finally get the help that he needed; one psilocybin assisted therapy session. With clear intentions and a strong willingness to do the work, Nick went from severe PTSD to no longer meeting the criteria for any diagnosis. With a new sense of clarity and the amazing support of his family, Nick resigned from the only profession that he had ever known. Nick now spends his time sharing his story of healing and post-traumatic growth while going all in on his dream to bring consciously made, natural fiber clothing to the world through his apparel brand; Flow State Designs! In episode one of our Case Studies season, Just Science sat down with Ian Oxton, Forensic Identification Specialist for the Calgary Police Service, to discuss a triple homicide case involving the longest lasting Amber Alert in Alberta, Canada's history. Operation Amber started as a race against the clock for a missing child and his grandparents, then quickly evolved into a massive search effort on a 40-acre property. During the investigation, a wide range of forensic techniques, including aerial photography, bloodstain pattern analysis, forensic odontology, and footwear analysis, were utilized to resolve the case. Listen along as Ian describes his role as the Primary Forensics Investigator on the case, the challenges of prosecuting a no-body homicide, and the many lessons learned from this groundbreaking case. BANFF – Members of the Hells Angels were on their best behaviour during a recent visit to Banff, but five members of the outlaw motorcycle gang were slapped with tickets for blowing through stop signs and red lights in the tourist town. On the weekend of July 15-16, the RCMP led a joint-forces operation with the gang enforcement unit, known as the Integrated Gang Enforcement Team, as well as the Calgary Police Service. Banff's Mounties, who were supported by RCMP from throughout the southern Alberta district and had a strong police presence downtown, had notified Banff's Bar Watch organization ahead of time that members of the outlaw motorcycle club would be in town. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/motorcyclemadhouse/message
This week, Michelle Robinson stops by and we talk politics, truth and reconciliation, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and 2 Spirit. We talk briefly about our individual roles walking along side the Calgary Police Service, as they undergo, what we hope is lasting, deep change. I am reminded as to the importance of creating safe places for people. How some humans have been abused so deeply by the system and others, it is absolutely necessary to be seen and heard. Not just when our voices are quiet and inoffensive. Hearing and seeing racialized and marginalized humans - understanding the expression of anger, as a valve for a never ending pressure cooker. Thank you Michelle, I appreciate you so much.
The policing of today looks vastly different from the policing of 30 to 40 years ago; however, recruitment, retention, training and serving the community are still of the utmost importance. In this episode of Blue Line, The Podcast, editor Brittani Schroeder was joined by Deputy Chief Raj Gill of the Calgary Police Service to talk about policing in Calgary, how policing is changing in Canada and where policing might be headed.
Recently, a local website published an article that disseminated a story about a trans woman in a change room that provoked a very strong response. With escalating rhetoric and bigotry targeting the trans community, we take a look at how that "story" has evolved and highlight the fact that the Calgary Police Service has since called it. Additionally, we take a look at some of the bizarre legislation that the UCP announced that they will be introducing, the ongoing scandal around the $1400 limo ride, the provincial budget that is simultaneously a record budget for spending and an austerity budget and more with analysis from politico and strategist Sarah Biggs! It's Friday, March 3rd, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) State Dept. urges Burmese military to release Christian leader On February 23rd, the U.S. government condemned the Myanmar military's arrest and detention of Baptist leader Hkalam Samson, reports International Christian Concern. Samson is the former head of the Kachin Baptist Convention, a group located in northern Myanmar's Kachin state that represents much of the nation's Christian minority. He was detained in December 2022 by authorities under the military junta that seized power two years ago. State Department spokesman Ned Price issued this challenge. PRICE: “We condemn the Burma military regime's arrest and detention of prominent ethnic Kachin Christian leader Rev. [Hkalam] Samson. We are extremely concerned for his wellbeing and safety and encourage our partners and allies to join us in calling on the regime to drop all charges and immediately and unconditionally release Rev. Samson.” Pastor arrested for objecting to children's drag queen story hour Yesterday afternoon, Pastor Derek Reimer was arrested by members of the dictatorial Calgary Police Service after being warned the previous day there were two warrants out for his arrest because he protested at a children's drag queen story time at a public library last weekend, reports LifeSiteNews.com. A video, posted online by Rebel News, shows Reimer, who serves as the pastor of Mission7 street ministry, being put into the back of a police cruiser by two female officers. Tucker Carlson of Fox News described the scene that had been videotaped by Rebel News, one of the few conservative Canadian outlets. CARLSON: “The pastor, sitting in a car with bars on the windows, getting hauled away to jail for being thrown to the ground at Drag Queen Story Hour.” Before the Canadian policewoman raised the rear window of the cop car in which Reimer was detained, he said, “This is what happens when we go against the drag queens.” She was able to cut off the last word of his sentence. (Watch this video between 1:28 and 1:37.) Listen. REIMER: “This is what happens when you go against drag [queens.]” This past Saturday, Reimer had been protesting at a kids' Drag Queen Story Time event held at the Seton Calgary public library. Outrageously, the pastor was ruffed up and thrown to the ground for simply verbally opposing the sexualization of children at taxpayers' expense. Ezra Levant, Founder of Rebel News, appeared with Tucker Carlson on Fox News. LEVANT: “Tucker, you have done more journalism on Christian pastors being jailed in Canada than most Canadian media. In fact, the Canadian media either ignore it or cheer it on, calling these people bigots.” He explained who inspired the arrest of Pastor Reimer. LEVANT: “The Left wing mayor of Calgary, [Jyoti Gondek], went on a Twitter rant saying that anyone who lies or engages in vitriol or is full of hate should be arrested and charged. Now, those aren't crimes, by the way. Some of them are a matter of opinion. I could think that the mayor is full of hate. But after the mayor basically directed police to arrest peaceful protesters, they did.” Isaiah 5:20 says, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil." You can send a polite email of objection to Calgary Mayor Gondek through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. If you'd like to help with the legal expenses of getting Pastor Derek Reimer out of jail after being falsely arrested, you can make a donation at SavePastorDerek.com. Plus, you can encourage Pastor Reimer with a 1-2 sentence email. derek@mission7ministries.com (7 is the number) Christian host Todd Starnes calls for Biden's impeachment As the Conservative Political Action Conference got underway yesterday in Fort Washington, Maryland, Christian talk show host Todd Starnes, in a sit-down conversation on stage with Republican Congressman Ralph Norman of South Carolina, called for the impeachment of President Joe Biden. STARNES: “I know that Speaker McCarthy said a couple of months back that he's seen nothing that Biden's done that would be worthy of impeachment. But it seems violating the oath of office and not protecting this nation from enemies foreign and domestic, letting that balloon invade our airspace, that is worthy of impeachment.” Lesbian Chicago mayor defeated Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who made headlines a couple of years ago when she became the first black woman and first homosexual to lead the Windy City, has lost reelection, reports The Christian Post. She entered into a faux marriage with Amy Eshelman in 2015 when it was first possible to do so. On Tuesday, Lightfoot came in third place, finishing behind long-serving public school official Paul Vallas and Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson. Vallas, who ran on a staunchly pro-police platform, and Johnson, who had strong backing from liberals and labor unions, will square off in a runoff mayoral election on April 4. FCA ships $1 million of sports equipment to Ukrainian coaches and athletes And finally, Fellowship of Christian Athletes is partnering with Convoy of Hope to send a full shipping container which includes 40 pallets of sports equipment to Ukraine. The total value of the materials is over $1 million. Sasha Aleksandrov, FCA Ukraine Director, said, “Because of the war, sports equipment has been destroyed or abandoned.” Hundreds of FCA staff, volunteers, and donors came together from across America to donate new and used equipment for Ukrainian coaches and athletes. Andriy Kravtsov said, “My heart is full of joy because I see the goodness of God through faithful and generous people.” Acts 20:35 says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, March 3rd, in the year of our Lord 2023. Free City Radio 94. A conversation with the directors of the documentary film "No Visible Trauma," filmmakers Marc Serpa Francoeur and Robinder Uppal. This important documentary about systemic police violence and brutality in the Canadian city of Calgary points to broader issues of systemic racism within police forces across Canada and in North America. This is the write-up on the film: "In the midst of a global uprising against police violence and systemic racism, No Visible Trauma / Above the Law examines a deeply troubled police department and reveals the devastating consequences of unchecked police brutality. Despite its relatively low crime rates, recent years have seen the Calgary Police Service shoot and kill more people than officers in any other Canadian city, and more than either the New York or Chicago police departments in 2018. Five years in the making, the film unravels the intertwined stories of three individuals who were the victims of extreme violence at the hands of police officers. From the kidnapping and beating of a young immigrant from Ghana, to the fatal shooting of an unarmed man during a 'wellness check,' the film exposes a criminal justice system that fails to hold police officers accountable for their actions." Info : https://losttimemedia.com/portfolio/nvt-atl The directors will participate in a Cinema Politica hosted conversation on the documentary taking place on Monday, Feb. 28th at 8pm, you can register for the conversation and also watch the film online surrounding the screening here : https://www.cinemapolitica.org Image is a still from the documentary.
