During Halloween weekend of 1993, a 34-year-old teacher and mother of three, Cherilyn Hawkley, vanished from Granite Bay, California. Two days later, her body was discovered inside her minivan, less than a mile from the school where she taught fifth grade. In the early hours of April 16, 1983, 23-year-old Karen Schepers of Elgin went missing after a night out with co-workers. And over four decades later, the Elgin Police Department's Cold Case Unit takes this missing persons case on again. The detectives behind the case document their investigation in the first season of the “Somebody Knows Something” podcast. Walter Page was a longtime member of the Freemasons in Manchester, New Hampshire. As treasurer of his local lodge, Walter had overseen the philanthropic efforts of their chapter for years, and he had also helped sort out the mess following more than one major financial theft. In the days before his death, Walter was on the verge of exposing yet another.Investigators have been exceptionally vocal about their views of what happened on that snowy night in December of 1995 and have even named a primary suspect in the case. On September 27, 2004, 18-year-old Brittany Phillips had what appeared to be a typical day in the life of a college student. She spent time with friends and called her mom later that night to catch up. But after that phone call, no one saw or heard from Brittany again. She didn't show up for her classes, she didn't check in with friends, and she didn't return any of her mother's calls. Days passed with no word, until September 30, when one of her friends called the police. When officers entered the apartment, they found Brittany on the floor next to her bed, with her head positioned toward the foot of the mattress. She had been strangled and possibly sexually assaulted. There were no obvious signs of forced entry, but detectives collected DNA from the scene, hoping that somewhere in that evidence was the identity of her killer. Now, more than twenty years later, that DNA has still not resulted in any arrests, leaving her family still seeking justice. 18-year-old Brittany Phillips was last heard from at around 9:00 p.m. on the night of September 27, 2004, while speaking with her mother on the phone. She was supposed to attend an 8:00 a.m. class the following morning, but she never showed up. Days later, on the night of September 30, Brittany was found dead in her apartment on East 65th Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She had been strangled and may have been sexually assaulted. On an unseasonably chilly morning of June 3, 1990, a man tapped on the door of an unfamiliar car parked in front of his home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Through the window, he could see a blonde woman in the passenger seat slumped over toward the driver's side of the car. He assumed she was drunk and passed out, but when he opened the car door to wake her up, he quickly realized that she was dead. Rattled, he quickly closed the door and immediately called the police. The woman was later identified as 21-year-old Beth Buege. Born and raised in Milwaukee she worked in a jewelry store and was an aspiring model. More than 30 years later, her killer has never been caught. And her family still seeks justice. April 29th, 1999. A skull is found in a trash bag outside Action Glass in Atlanta, Georgia. Soon after, in different trash bags, various other body parts are found. The remains are identified as the remains of Melissa Wolfenbarger, a 21-year-old married mother of two who is reported missing several months prior. In a remarkable twist, Melissa's remains are verified only after her Father is arrested in connection to an unrelated murder. February 22, 1996. Nashville, Tennessee. 18-year old Melissa Chilton and 18-year Tiffany Campbell show up for work at Exotic Tan for Men, a tanning salon which doubles as an adult entertainment establishment. At some point during their shift, an assailant murders the two women in the salon's laundry room and they are stabbed a combined total of over 100 times. Seventeen years later, a suspect named Patrick Streater, who happens to be Tiffany's former boyfriend, is charged with both murders. However, in 2018, the authorities announce that new DNA testing has significantly weakened their case against Streater, making it impossible to take him to trial, so the murder charges are dropped. The Portland Police Bureau Cold Case Unit will be reinstated thanks to a grant. In 2004, PPB formed a Cold Case Unit to use technological advances to review and investigate unsolved homicides dating back to the 1960s. Over the next 18 years, the Cold Case Unit reviewed more than 270 cases, clearing more than 50 of them. More than 30 individuals were charged with homicide-related crimes. In 2022, the Cold Case Unit was disbanded due to the reallocation of resources in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, civil unrest, unprecedented retirements and resignations, and exponential increases in both homicides and gun-related crimes. In 2023, PPB applied for and received a grant through the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI). The $2.5 million grant will fund four detectives and provide $300,000 for advanced testing, including Forensic Genetic Genealogy (FGG). The Cold Case Unit will review not only unsolved homicides but also unsolved missing persons cases and unsolved violent crimes, such as robberies and assaults. “I feel very fortunate that we're able to bring back the Cold Case Unit,” Chief Bob Day said. Clearing unsolved cases will hopefully provide some closure for victims' families. Work in this space can also reduce crime by apprehending prolific violent offenders.” With hundreds of unsolved cases to examine, the Cold Case Unit will be tasked with prioritizing their caseload. The prioritization process will consider severity, with homicides being a priority. Violent crimes will be prioritized based on the time remaining under the statute of limitations. One of those cold cases is from August 29, 1988, police responded to a welfare check at 2612 N. Holman, which the granddaughter of the occupants of that residence called in. Police entered the residence, where they discovered the bodies of Robert Wheatley, 61, and Frieda Wheatley, 69, in the basement. The medical examiner determined the cause of death as strangulation. Detectives believe that the Wheatley's died on August 27, 1988. It is apparent from the crime scene that the motive was robbery. There was no sign of forced entry. The home was ransacked, and a television set, ATM card, credit card, and the Wheatley's light green 1979 Buick Regal were stolen. The ATM and credit cards were used extensively in Northeast, North, and Downtown Portland before Wheatley's bodies were discovered. The Buick was recovered in a Jantzen Beach Shopping Center parking lot a few days later. Investigating Detectives believe that people in the community have information about this crime.  Witnesses may contact Cold Case Homicide Unit investigators at (503) 823-0400. The first-ever Cold Case Unit dedicated to solving homicide and sexual assault cases that have gone unsolved for years has been established by the New Mexico Department of Justice.   Attorney General Torrez said that the unit's goal is to provide justice and closure for the victims' families, who have been living with uncertainty and pain. "We will not give up on these cases, no matter how much time has passed. We are working with law enforcement agencies across the state, and we welcome any public or agency input that can help us crack these cold cases," he said.   The Cold Case Unit has six cases under investigation from the 1980s to the 2010s. The unit uses the latest forensic genetic genealogy techniques to generate new leads and identify suspects.   The unit consists of three full-time, sworn law enforcement agents who are reviewing and investigating the cases. Case #1: Anthony Velasquez and his father, Manuel, are arrested by the LA County Sheriff's Department's Cold Case Unit in connection with the deaths of 3 people over a 4-year period in the East LA area. Manuel is accused of driving his son to some of the murder scenes. Case #2: A tragic case from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Cold Case unit – the discovery of a newborn at a trash sorting facility. Detectives are trying to find the identity of Baby Jane Doe #45 and the mother who dumped her into a trash bin.

December 31, 2002. Vancouver, British Columbia. The Vancouver Police Department receive an anonymous letter containing a remorseful confession from someone who claims to have been responsible for the death of a sex worker. While the victim's name is not mentioned, investigators eventually suspect that she might be 24-year old Danielle LaRue, a sex worker from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside neighbourhood who seemed to vanish without explanation one month before the letter arrived. Even though the police ask the letter writer to come forward, this individual is not heard from again and no trace of Danielle is ever found. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we share the story of Danielle LaRue, an Indigenous woman who lived an incredibly tragic life before she went missing. We will also explore the stories of Ashley Machiskinic and Verna Simard, two other Indigenous women from the Downtown Eastside, who both died suspicious deaths after falling from a window at the Regent Hotel. In October 1993, Thurgood Marshall School of Law student Dawn Williams vanished without so much as a trace. Fellow students, friends, and family searched everywhere but no clues were found. Houston Police, too, failed to find anything at all. The following month, a crew cleaning trash from an area in rural Montgomery County found the 25-year-old women's body buried in a shallow grave, partially unearthed by animals. Police, and especially Dawn's father, had a good idea what happened to her and who did it, but evidence has eluded investigators for 30 years. NEW HAMPSHIRE, 2001: On December 27, 2001, a friend arrived at 50-year old George Jodoin's farmhouse in Auburn, New Hampshire, expecting to get a tutorial on caring for his animals ahead of George's trip to Thailand. Instead, he found George dead in his bedroom. In the early days of the investigation, the list of suspects could never be narrowed down to just one person. Investigators were frustrated, and the residents of Auburn, a small town just east of Manchester, feared there could be a killer on the loose. Despite a sizable reward offered by the Jodoin family and efforts by investigators, a year passed with dwindling leads, no arrests, and a lack of evidence. Eventually, the case went cold.But in 2009, New Hampshire's first-ever Cold Case Unit was established. Within two years, the Cold Case Unit had taken on over a hundred cases of unsolved murders and missing persons in New Hampshire. George's brother, Robert Jodoin, made sure George's murder case was a priority to investigators. Jason, a student at Texas State University, left his apartment late in the evening on December 13, 2020, to return home to Missouri City, Texas for a quick visit. But Jason never made it home.Shortly after midnight, his car was found crashed and abandoned on a desolate road near Luling, a small town only about 30 minutes away from where he started. While Jason was nowhere to be found, he left several disturbing items behind. On July 11th, 1996 Blair Adams was found half clothed and beaten to death. In February of 2001, the calm in small town Chesterfield, New Hampshire was disrupted by an investigation carried out by New Hampshire State Police. Mother and daughter Tina and Bethany Sinclair were nowhere to be found. Though the two missing Sinclairs were the focus of the small community that year, over time, updates became fewer and farther between. Eventually, the cold weather made searches of the waterways surrounding the town next to impossible. The investigation stalled out. But Tina and Bethany Sinclair are far from forgotten. This week I'm joined by my good friend Tim Quick. From basic training to retirement, Tim's career spanned the globe of the NCIS missions. He began his career at the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill, served in Guam, returned to the U.S. and was a successful undercover agent in Florida. He served a tour on the USS John F Kennedy as an a "Agent Afloat" during 9-11. He was a member of the elite Cold Case Unit in the South-East Field Office and conducted multiple deployments to Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. As Executive Assistant to the Director of NCIS, Tim would find himself as a trusted advisor. Tim would complete his career as the Special Agent in Charge of the Norfolk Field Office. Today, Tim continues to serve as the Chief Investigator for the Florida State Prosecutor.

Wife and mother of two, Kathy Bonderson's body was found in a burning car, well past midnight, on October 25th, 1987, in New Rockford, North Dakota. 18-year-old Minot University college student, Anita Knutson, was found stabbed to death in her off-campus apartment in June of 2007. Both murders were investigated, and both ended up as cold cases in North Dakota. Until the state's two-person Cold Case Unit was started in 2005. Investigators started to dig into the suspicious death of Kathy Bonderson first, taking the state's Police Department on a wild ride that culminated in the accusations of a greedy, cheating husband, a suicide, and spanned three Western states over the course of 18 years. Investigators also looked into the murder of innocent Anita Knutson. With the help of friends, family and loved ones, and, perhaps most importantly, the TV True Crime Show, Cold Justice, an arrest was finally made. In 2022, only one month ago, this 15-year-old homicide was solved. 46 years after the abduction, torture, and murder of a 17-year-old girl, cold case detectives with the Fort Worth police department arrested a 78-year old Glen McCurley and charged him with capital murder. McCurley abducted Carla Walker from the parking lot of a bowling alley in 1974. Walker had been to a Valentine's day dance with her 17-year old boyfriend. McCurley pistol-whipped Walker's boyfriend and tried to shoot him in the head three times but the pistol's magazine fell out. Walker's lifeless body was later found dumped in a culvert. Fort Worth Police detectives Jeff Bennett and Leah Wagner were the primary investigators who reopened this case in 2019. New, advanced DNA testing matched McCurley's DNA to stains found on Carla Walker's clothing. The 46-year old unsolved case came to an end in August of 2021 when McCurley pleaded guilty during his murder trial. He was sentenced to life in prison. Retired Homicide Detective David Thornton helped start the cold case unit. At the outset, investigators faced 750 unsolved murders dating back to 1966. Thornton put into motion an effort that is still solving cold cases in which the original investigation failed to produce sufficient evidence to support murder charges.
