Welcome to another episode of Nomadic Diaries where we traverse the boundaries of culture and geography to understand the essence of a nomadic lifestyle. Hosted by Doreen Cumberford, we are joined by our distinguished guest Polly Collingridge, a cross-cultural psychology expert and a professional at the Cultural Intelligence Center in the UK.Cultural Intelligence: A Deep DivePolly Collingridge shares insights from over 150 peer-reviewed papers that back the cultural intelligence (CQ) scale as a trustworthy assessment tool. The CQ framework comprises four main capabilities: drive, knowledge, strategy, and action, crucial for working effectively across various cultural landscapes.- A 15-minute main assessment can provide a snapshot of one's cultural intelligence and preferences across ten cultural values.Personal and Professional PerspectivesPolly brings her personal experiences living in different countries into the conversation, highlighting how these have shaped her interest in the intercultural field from childhood. In her work at the Cultural Intelligence Center, she focuses on training global teams, enhancing diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and boosting staff engagement through the lens of cultural intelligence. The Intersection of Digital and Cultural Divide Doreen and Polly touch upon the shifting digital behaviors and how the generational digital divide resembles being in a different cultural territory.Strategies and AdaptabilityBoth Doreen and Polly stress the importance of understanding one's own cultural perspective and the need to be open-minded for effective intercultural interaction.Polly recommends keeping things simple and striving to make connections, adapting to different emotional expressions and communication styles across cultures. The concept of emotional intelligence is woven into the conversation as a complement to cultural intelligence, particularly pertinent in our increasingly digital and divided world.Navigating Multicultural ChallengesDoreen and Polly share their personal challenges and stories about living abroad, especially focusing on experiences in the US, and the indispensable role cultural intelligence plays in such journeys.Polly underlines the significance of self-assessment in identifying areas of improvement in cultural intelligence, with specific references to strategies that aid development in this area.Resources and Further EngagementFor listeners looking to delve further into the topic or engage with Polly, she can be found on LinkedIn and contacted via email Polly Collingridge at Culturalco.uk Additional resources can be accessed through [Culturalq.co.uk](http://culturalq.co.uk) and.com, where you can find a blog and a recorded interview dedicated to global mobility and intercultural training.Closing Thoughts:Doreen wraps up the episode with an appreciation of Polly's contributions and encourages listeners to be proactive in engaging with the cultural intelligence initiative.Stay tuned for the next episode of Nomadic Diaries, where we continue our quest for insights and stories that shape a nomad's life. Today I talked to David Livermore about his book Digital, Diverse & Divided: How to Talk to Racists, Compete with Robots, and Overcome Polarization (Berrett-Koehler, 2022). While the author argues that cultural intelligence (CQ) begins where EQ leaves off, in truth key attributes of EQ like understanding another person's motivations and figuring out how to address them matter in both cases. Nowadays the challenge of connecting well only becomes harder, of course, given how social media means we often occupy echo chambers that merely reinforce what we already know and believe, as opposed to achieving a better understanding of how a person from a different place, or of a different race, gender, faith or political persuasion might see the matter at hand. This episode delves into how organizations must live up to their espoused values, plus instances where that fails to happen and what the corrective steps might be. David Livermore is the president and cofounder of the Cultural Intelligence Center in East Lansing, Michigan, and a research fellow at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He's held a variety of leadership positions in nonprofit organizations around the world and taught at numerous universities in addition to being a speaker and advisor to Fortune 500 companies and governments in over 100 countries. Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week we take a deep look at different factors that profoundly shape how we see the world – place, race, gender, religious beliefs, and politics – and seek ways to unify over our shared humanity despite our many diverse viewpoints. To guide us through the process, social scientist David Livermore reveals how to use cultural intelligence, a scientific model for working with people from different cultures, to bridge our differences closer to home and authentically connect with those around us. David Livermore is a social scientist and thought leader devoted to the topics of cultural intelligence and global leadership. He's a founder of the Cultural Intelligence Center in East Lansing, Michigan, and a research fellow at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Livermore spent twenty years in leadership positions with a variety of nonprofit organizations around the world and taught in numerous universities. He is a frequent speaker and adviser to leaders in Fortune 500s companies, nonprofits, and governments and has worked in more than one hundred countries. David has authored several other award-winning books, including The Curious Traveler, The Cultural Intelligence Difference, What Can I Do?, Expand Your Borders, and most recently “Digital, Diverse & Divided: How to Talk to Racists, Compete with Robots, and Overcome Polarization” (Sep 2022). THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… people who are seeking ways to come together, navigate difficult conversations, manage necessary relationships, and, most importantly, accept the differences that make us US. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… there are a number of differences that play into the individual personalities that reside within all of us, however, there is far more that makes us similar to each other rather than different. By applying the four competencies of cultural intelligence – motivation, cognition, meta-cognition, and behavioral flexibility – we are enabled to navigate difficult conversations and relationships across a wide range of situations. WHAT I LOVE MOST… Ultimately, David wants to address the big picture issues, tackling tribalism, confronting racism, and developing a common vision for the future. He believes that we can achieve this by taking the time to reconnect with our shared humanity and embracing our differences, but also not letting them divide us.
