Welcome to the #ShareYourHotness Podcast episode 158! Richard Davidson (Alkalarian) 1st * Keynote Speaker, Author, Heart Attack Prevention Advisor, Retired U.S. Navy Diver, CLO (Chief Longevity Officer), I Walk My Talk Richard Davidson was born in 1941 and raised in Salt Lake City, UT. His life journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, marked by a remarkable career in the U.S. Navy and a passion for promoting his own health and wellness through the concept of “Alkalinity”. In 1959, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and demonstrated exceptional dedication and skill, achieving the prestigious rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) and Chief Warrant Officer within 10 years. He acquired diving expertise in Para-SCUBA, Mixed Gas, and Hard Hat Diving, as well as qualifying as a Master Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technician. After a distinguished service of 20 years, he retired from the Navy in 1982 as a Chief Warrant Officer (CWO4). Richard's entrepreneurial spirit led him to own a Sir Speedy Printing Center and as a Book Publisher from 1991 to 1996. During this period, he collaborated with over 700 authors, contributing significantly to the literary landscape. In 1999, Richard became an Associate at the Salt Lake City "Water and Wellness Center," where his journey towards advocating alkaline water and wellness began. Inspired by influential works such as "Alkalize or Die" (1992) by Dr. Theodore A. Baroody and "The pH Miracle" (2002) by Dr. Robert O. Young. Basically, Richard started the "Alkalinity Movement" in 2002. His dedication to promoting alkaline mineral water led to its introduction at the Water and Wellness Center in 2004. In 2007, Richard embarked on a 4-year sabbatical in Missouri, where he immersed himself in learning Dr. Mayr's 100-year-old natural wellness program. His commitment to health took a personal turn in 2009 when he experienced a "Massive Heart Attack." Recognizing the symptoms, he acted swiftly, and due to his active Alkalarian lifestyle, he underwent a successful recovery without any side effects. Richard's passion for educating others about the “alkaline” concept saw him conducting live classes from 2011 to 2015, and virtual classes from 2018 to present, spreading up-to-date awareness about the potential benefits of maintaining a balanced body pH level. Continuing his pursuit of knowledge, Richard explored works like “The Acid Alkaline Food Guide” by Dr Susan E. Brown (2004), "The Alkaline Cure" by Dr. Stephen Domenig (2014) and "Get Off Your Acid" by Dr. Daryl Gioffre (2018), further solidifying his expertise in the field. Richard's passion for wellness and advocacy for the Alkalarian lifestyle led him to establish the "Alkaline Club of America," aiming to certify one million "Alkalarian" individuals. He is currently dedicated to the "Heart Attack Prevention" business, resolute in his mission to save lives and prevent heart-related health issues. With his first book set to be released in 2025, Richard's influence is poised to grow even further. His journey will culminate in a possible TEDx talk and a promising professional speaking career. Richard is associated with influential figures like Jack Canfield, author of "Chicken Soup for the Soul," and actively participates in the National Speakers Association (NSA) Mountain West Chapter, alongside esteemed individuals and worldwide speakers, like Dan Clark and Kathy Loveless. As busy, hard-working professionals with families, demanding jobs, and multiple other obligations, we often go into auto-pilot. We mindlessly follow scripts and templates that were passed onto us about what success looks like. We rarely stop to ask "why?" and fail to see that saying yes to too much may in the end lead us on to the people-pleasing road to ruin. This week's guest, Amy Green Smith, has successfully navigated this dance, and has helped many clients get out of this trap. Amy is a certified and credentialed life coach and hypnotherapist, masterful speaker, and personal empowerment expert. Amy uses her roles as coach, writer, podcaster, and speaker to move individuals to a place of radical personal empowerment and self-worth. With acute focus on helping people “find their voice”, she is highly sought after for her uncommon style of irreverence, wisdom, and humor and has been a featured expert in Inspired Coach Magazine and on Fox 5 San Diego. We touched on many fascinating topics during our discussion including: The artificial distinction between intuition and inner critic, which are actually in many ways just opposite sides of the same coin The common tendency to focus on the fight / flight response associated with the sympathetic nervous system, and ignore the 3rd “F” – fawn. How people-pleasing plays into all of this. Amy's powerful conception of “self-sentiment,” which is a bit more nuanced than the traditional notion of self-talk. How emotional “entry points” help us unpack moments of high anxiety, and prevent us from getting taken down by black and white thinking. Amy's spiritual journey, which started with a dogmatic, devout Christian upbringing, and evolved into her exploring Buddhism, Universal Unitarianism, and numerous other schools of thought Amy's transition from a successful (but unfulfilling) career in corporate training for a large cosmetics manufacturer to life coaching, which was far more aligned with her soul purpose The role of consent in following the voices of our inner critic as adults (vs. when we were children) The power of hypnotherapy in unlocking alpha, theta, and delta brainwave states. How injecting mindfulness even in small doses can ultimately push humanity forward. The importance of distinguishing between "am I in danger?” or “is this something new?" when entering ambiguous situations. What it truly means "outsource our self worth" - i.e., please others for the sake of feeling better about ourselves. How progressive language, and a more incremental approach, can help us break down those “big hairy audacious goals,” and prevent us from getting mired in self-sabotage and defeat. The analogy of smoke alarm to help us take a more measured, nuanced view of our self-defense systems. The valuable insights of Bruce Lipton, Jose Silva, Richard Davidson on mindfulness, hypnosis, and meditation Amy's signature 9-month transformational group immersion program for women entitled “Worthy,” which includes two 5-day retreats, a supportive community, as well as numerous online and offline resources Do you want to feel more worthy? In this episode, we discuss the new experimental AWS Lambda LLRT Low Latency runtime for JavaScript. We provide an overview of what a Lambda runtime is and how LLRT aims to optimize cold starts and performance compared to existing runtimes like Node.js. We outline the benefits of LLRT but also highlight concerns around its experimental status, lack of parity with Node.js, and reliance on dependencies like QuickJS. Overall, LLRT shows promise but needs more stability, support, and real-world testing before it can be recommended for production use. In the end, we also have an appeal for AWS itself when it comes to investing in the larger JavaScript ecosystem.

"Why is it that certain people are vulnerable to life's slings and arrows and why are other people more resilient?" Dr. Richard Davidson, Ph.D, felt guided by this question, and dedicated himself to developing insight into how our brains regulate our emotions. But in 1992, Richard was inspired by the Dalai Lama to revise his initial question and instead consider: What qualities foster well-being? "His Holiness challenged me and asked why we are not using the tools of modern neuroscience to study qualities such as kindness and compassion rather than negative qualities of the mind such as depression and anxiety. I had no good answer, and on that day, I made a commitment to His Holiness and to myself that I would do everything within my power to help place these positive qualities on the scientific map," Richard said. That renewed and refocused commitment has generated ripples of goodness. Named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2006, Richard founded in 2008 the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has served as a faculty member and professor since 1984. Richard's research is broadly focused on the neural bases of emotion and methods to promote human flourishing including meditation and related contemplative practices. A prolific researcher, he has authored more than 570 articles, numerous chapters and reviews, and edited 14 books. His research has identified four keys to well-being - resilience, outlook, attention, and generosity - that can be strengthened in each of us through practice. Richard founded Healthy Minds Innovations (HMI), a nonprofit affiliate of the Center for Healthy Minds, in 2014. HMI translates well-being science into tools (including a Kindness Curriculum and the Healthy Minds program and app) to cultivate and measure well-being. "I really feel a moral calling [to help people develop well-being as a skill], because I feel most people would agree that the trajectory we've been on is not a particularly healthy or sustainable one. Everyone has a role to play in this, everyone can be a participant, just like with climate science. Everyone can play a constructive role in helping the planet heal," said Richard. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Richard earned his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from NYU before completing his Ph.D in Personality, Psychopathology, and Psychophysiology at Harvard University. He authored (with Sharon Begley) the New York Times bestseller, The Emotional Life of Your Brain and co-authored Altered Traits with Daniel Goleman. In 2000, Richard was the recipient of the American Psychological Association's prestigious Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award in 2000. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2017, and appointed to the Governing Board of UNESCO's Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) in 2018. As we like to point out, we have no clue who is on our guest list when we start the podcast.  Luana brought three people we've spoken with before, and they wanted to weigh in on the same topic that was talked about last week - that is, how to get out of a negative mindset, as well as how to treat the negative impacts of football or drug abuse on the brain. In this case, Paul Allen, the cofounder of Microsoft who created the brain institute stopped by.  When Jennifer and I first met Paul it was some years ago - and is in the film TALKING TO PAUL ALLEN, JUNIOR SEAU AND DAVE DUERSON (Free on Youtube).  In that film, we detail how these three individuals wanted to tell us that "Joe Namath has cured his CTE using oxygen therapy."   No other way to put it - we were not aware of that in any way shape or form. And after their third visit to talk about it - I learned that indeed Joe was telling people that his oxygen therapy had likely cured his CTE. So I tried to clarify that what he had come through to tell us, was that Paul is suggesting "from the flipside" that oxygen therapy would be valuable in treating depression or brain trauma. As noted, in the research of Richard Davidson at the University of Wisconsin, he's shown that meditation can "change the shape of the amygdala, the regulator of serotonin in the brain - the regulator of emotions. I highly recommend people take a look at this research if it's something they're working on. Davidson has demonstrated that meditation can "cure or alleviate symptoms of depression."  Worth examining. Then there were two other friends who stopped by - one was Bill Paxton whom I knew for decades, and has shown up often in our book BACKSTAGE PASS TO THE FLIPSIDE where we interviewed him extensively about his journey. But also the film TALKING TO BILL PAXTON is now available on Amazon where I had three different mediums ask Bill the same questions on the flipside and he answered them all the same - including one session where I was not present. Finally, Charles Grodin is and was a dear friend, and for Jennifer to say that he was the source of the voice that I heard this morning (saying "HELLO" so loudly it woke me up) and my wife woke me up yesterday with this poking of my foot - saying "someone had poked her three or four times in the night." Again - it's a way of demonstrating that they still exist. Neither my wife nor I suspected that it was someone we knew - and I had planned to "ask the question during the podcast" if the time arose that I could ask it... and sure enough, it was brought up without me prodding, and Jennifer said that "something happened to Sherry as well" which was accurate. Anyways, a long way of saying our loved ones are not far away. Just allow that they know what we're doing, they know that it's okay to chat with us, they know that we will disbelieve that it really is them, but if one is listening to this podcast, it's likely because they would like to be able to converse with a loved one. Jennifer is doing a wine and spirits group this weekend in Santa Ynez, near Solvang - so if one is in the neighborhood check it out. Another mind bending session with the flipside.

Dr. Richard Davidson (Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, Founder & Director of the Center for Healthy Minds) shows us what it truly means to be well in your emotional self by harnessing our trauma mechanisms into well-being! He breaks down the scientific data he's gathered on long-term meditators (including monks!) to show the efficacy of meditation, the parts of the brain most affected by meditation, and what all of that means for how we self-regulate and cope with trauma. Dr. Davidson explains how meditation can help parenting, how our expectations and narratives influence our perception of the world, and what our "emotional fingerprints" are. He and Mayim discuss how his framework of awareness, connection, insight, and purpose lead us to understand the science of well-being, the notion that love and kindness are innate and hate is learned, and the importance of teaching forms of meditation to our kids.Check out the Center for Healthy Minds:  https://centerhealthyminds.org/give/overviewFor well-being tools, visit: https://hminnovations.orgDownload the free Healthy Minds meditation app:  https://hminnovations.org/meditation-appBialikBreakdown.comYouTube.com/mayimbialik

In this episode, we traverse a decade of Sam's conversations on the topic of meditation.  We start with the very first recorded episode from the archives: a conversation with Sam's meditation teacher and friend, Joseph Goldstein. Goldstein recalls how his thinking was unlocked—allowing him to fully realize the power of the practice—by the utterance of one single word. We then hear from author Richard Lang as he guides us towards a strangely obvious insight that came to be known as “the headless way.” Next, philosopher and neuroscientist Thomas Metzinger employs his vast expertise in both neurobiology and meditation to show how our brains generate a model of the world and self, and how meditation can help us catch that process in the act. Psychiatrist Judson Brewer then shifts the conversation to some very practical applications of mindfulness meditation, addressing the problem of addiction to things like food, smoking, or drugs by retraining the reward centers in our brains. Next, Daniel Goleman and Richard Davidson dig into the neuroscience of meditation and discuss how experienced meditators may actually be physically altering their brains.  We then listen in on Sam's conversation with author Robert Wright, who defends the claim that “Buddhism is true.” Sam and Wright discuss the validity of this claim while ensuring they keep it separate from the political and moral behaviors of Buddhist nations and individuals. We conclude with Sam delivering the answer to a question posed by the Belgian neuroscientist Steven Laureys. In doing so, Sam provides a comprehensive tour of his philosophies. He ties together his personal brand of moral analysis, his reverence for science and truth seeking, and his reasoning as to why he still meditates and why he proudly promotes the practice.   About the Series Filmmaker Jay Shapiro has produced The Essential Sam Harris, a new series of audio documentaries exploring the major topics that Sam has focused on over the course of his career. Each episode weaves together original analysis, critical perspective, and novel thought experiments with some of the most compelling exchanges from the Making Sense archive. Whether you are new to a particular topic, or think you have your mind made up about it, we think you'll find this series fascinating.

Like most neuroscientists, until a little more than thirty years ago, Dr. Richard “Richie'' researched and studied things that go wrong with the brain.  But then, in 1992 he visited the Dalai Lama, who challenged him instead to work on understanding what happens to our brains when we practice kindness and compassion.  This conversation changed the trajectory of Richie's life and career and he will share much of what he's worked on and learned in the thirty-plus years since.  Among the topics covered in this conversation are the toxicity of distraction, neuroplasticity and our ability to reshape our brains, the value of gratitude and appreciation, and how simply being more aware of our surroundings can change our mindsets for the better.
