Danzy Senna joins The Stacks to discuss her latest novel, Colored Television, a satirical take on one novelist's attempt to leave books behind and strike it rich in Hollywood. Today, Danzy explains why she uses the word "mulatto" in her work, how humor is integral to the mixed experience, and why all her characters make such bad decisions.Don't forget, The Stacks Book Club pick for September is Jazz by Toni Morrison. We discuss Danzy's garage (what I'd consider pretty perfect and attainable), his transition into Sim drifting, and nostalgia talks with Justin about video games, along with a solid chat about boxing, keeping fit and trying new hobbies like gardening when you get your own place.Danzy has been a huge supporter from day one! Florida State Seminoles fans, here's the lineup for the three segments from today's Locked On Seminoles podcast: Up first is Florida State running back verbal commitment Micahi Danzy. Tallahassee (Fla.) Florida State University prospect is a special young man on the field, and off of it as well. Yes, he plays at the high school directly built in conjunction with Florida State University itself. He does a great job representing himself and those around him as well. **Tremendous speed. He told me he ran a 45.99 in the 400. Seeing him move at practice, it's no wonder that Danzy had a bevy of scholarship offers. Danzy chose the Seminoles over the Gators. **He's also a great young man and one that's articulate and thoughtful. He's going to represent FSU well when he's not on the gridiron either. Second segment: FSU running back Trey Benson. **Is he going to impact the game as a blocker, runner and receiver? If he can get going in the running game, make a few plays, that opens the passing game for Jordan Travis. **Additionally, Benson could be called upon to make some plays out of the backfield. If he gets matched up with LSU linebacker Harold Perkins, that's going to be a blast to watch! Third segment: Seminoles linebackers need to make at least one big play during the early portion of the contest. **Could be creating a fumble, a short-yardage stop, or perhaps picking off a Jayden Daniels pass. **FSU gaining a potential momentum shift from a linebacker like Tatum Bethune could be the difference in the final outcome between the Seminoles and Tigers. Childhood is a very important part in anyone's life. Brother Danzy had a tough childhood and he went through things that can mentally break someone for life. We have always heard little girls being raped and molested but we do not hear much about the boys. Not only was brother Danzy molested, a TRAIN was ran on him by his family members. Yes you read that correctly... a TRAIN!!! Growing up, he was physically beat down so much that he ended up in foster care. When a lot of boys and girls do not find that love at home, they tend to try to find it in the wrong places and in this case brother Danzy thought he found it in a gang. His gang banging actions would lead him right to prison where he did time. Because he had such a rough childhood, brother Danzy tried to kill himself. As you can see, he went to so many directions but got nothing good in return. As he was doing time in prison, he would begin reading his bible and gain some knowledge. One thing he got was that there is 3 gods.. that's right, brother Danzy believed in the trinity. As time went on, he found out about Pastor Gino Jennings through a preacher who would always copy PJ by saying "AM I RIGHHHHHHHT". Eventually, brother Danzy wanted to know who this Pastor Gino Jennings was. As he began listening to PJ, brother Danzy agreed with everything up until he heard that there was One God! Fast forward, brother Danzy got pricked and had to humble himself and now can truly say.. that there is only One God. We give God thanks for brother Danzy and is courage to constantly listen to word despite his unbelief. You can continue to refuse the teachings but eventually somewhere down the line, you will have to bare witness to the truth.. Keep brother Danzy, his family, myself and my family in prayer so that we can continue to strive and hold on to God's unchanging hand in this hard holy way. Let's continue keep the apostle, his family, the faithful ministering brethren, their families, the sick, the afflicted and one another in prayer. "Antoinette is a Christian author who has written several books from a collection of poetry and sermons that the Holy Spirit has put on her heart during the different chapters of her life. When she is bothered, her heart is heavy, or she is just plain excited, she is led to write it. She is also married with 3 children while she and her husband also run several businesses from home including a Kingdom Principle ministry where they make Kingdom Principle t-shirts as a way to spread the gospel along with bracelets and earrings. Her motto is, "Don't just wear it, share it". Her prayer is that anyone who reads her books may be blessed from the inside out, encouraged and will just be motivated to keep the faith and stay on the path of righteousness even when the road gets rocky. Antoinette is a prime example of how God can still use anyone no matter what you have been through or how many mistakes you have made. After almost dying on the job as a Philadelphia police officer, she knew there had to be a purpose for her survival. She took the hurt and pain from losing custody of her first born to being nearly divorced and allowed God to use her to encourage and inspire someone else. No matter what life has thrown at her, she still believes in the goodness of God, spreading love, encouraging others and doing good no matter how much wrong has been done to you."

MJ recommends Release by Patrick Ness. The book is a day in the life of a queer kid in Seattle as he is dealing with a going away party, issues at work, etc. "I've been in this queer YA binge, and this book has been so good. It's been so good." And you can read Danzy's essay about Oreo, "An Overlooked Classic About the Comedy of Race," here.

Sam talks to novelist Danzy Senna about her new book, 'New People,' and about race in America, why LA is boring in a good way, black identity, what white people say when they think they're alone, being "professionally black", how her students perform their race, artistic integrity and safe spaces, prestige black TV like 'Atlanta' and 'Insecure', and the election of Barack Obama. If you're in the Washington DC area, catch Sam and Danzy in person at the East City Bookshop in Capitol Hill on Monday, September 18. Email the show at samsanders@npr.org and follow Sam on Twitter @samsanders.
Author Danzy Senna joins Kate, Medaya, and Eric to discuss her novel New People, a romantic "comedy" of manners that overflows with insight into race and identity in America. Senna describes how she crafts historical/cultural geographies: of Brooklyn in the '90s, Stanford University a few years earlier, and the nightmare utopia of Jonestown. The dialogue reveals an author of personal, very human, tales with tremendous resonance for our troubled Trumpian times. Also, poet and choreographer Harmony Holiday returns to recommend Toni Cade Bambara's novel The Salt Eaters.
