Jeff and Phil welcome writer/director Amy Wang and actress Shirley Chen to talk about their new film Slanted, a horror/comedy described as "Mean Girls meets The Substance." They discuss blending body horror and black comedy to tell an Asian American story about race, shame, and belonging; why the American high school prom is a useful and universal -- they love this movie in Germany! -- cinematic narrative device to interrogate some big ideas; how to find the "whitest" stock footage for your fake karaoke video; and why McKenna Grace speaks Chinese so well in the movie. Also: The Good, The Bad, and The WTF of making Slanted. This episode is sponsored by Chinese Republicans, a new play from Roundabout Theatre Company.
JLB sits down with Amy Wang, the writer/director/producer of 'Slanted', a movie that stars Shirley Chen, Maitreyi Ramakrisnan and McKenna Grace. Amy shares behind the scenes stories of conceptualizing the film and all the context that'll give you a deeper appreciation of it. SLANTED is the debut of writer-director Amy Wang, about a Chinese-American teenager (Shirley Chen) who undergoes an experimental surgery in order to become white. Not like skin-bleaching white. I mean, blonde hair, blue-eyed, McKenna Grace.Joan Huang, ever since her emigration to the U.S. from China as an elementary-school-aged kid, has absorbed and subsequently lived by racial hegemony. Fair-skinned, thin blondes reign supreme. Dark-haired Chinese girls do not. Prom queens don't look like her. The artists plastered on her bedroom walls also don't look like her. Hell, her Snapchats don't even look like her, partially due to a skin-lightening filter made by Ethnos, a company who keeps sending texts praising her loyalty to said filter, offering her a chance to change her life forever.Joan can dress the part of the school's local Regina George protege Olivia (Amelie Zilber), even dye her hair the same color, but as Olivia says, in one of the movie's most scathing lines, "I can still see your black roots." Something more drastic must occur.Joan finally gives Ethnos a shot. They offer her the ability to surgically transform her body, skin tone, hair color, facial structure, all of it, in order to abandon her Chinese identity and become white.Enter Jo (McKenna Grace). She looks like the ideal Joan's always searched for. On the street, she turns heads, elicits the warmest, friendliest smiles. Joan is now beloved, at the expense of the body and face she's always known. And as one can expect from a body horror movie, the MONKEY'S PAW of it all eventually rears its head but what I think allows SLANTED to stand apart from its most-often pitched combination of THE SUBSTANCE & MEAN GIRLS is the length of time by which I learn about Joan Huang. I meet her hard-working dad (Fang Du) who's more optimistic about adopting Americanisms than her mom (Vivian Wu). The movie reveals how racial hegemonies, contradictions and all, are adopted into the psyches of immigrant children. Joan doesn't see this rejection of her Chinese self in service of the benefits of assimilation as anything other than normal. To her, a surgery that rips her hair out of her scalp and cracks her jaw/orbital bones into a mold of a different genetic makeup is merely the logical path forward. She wants to be prom queen, right? Exalted, loved, adored? Like we all do. The roots of this self-hatred run deep and as a result, craft a portrait of someone with little stability regarding her own identity. It's already tough to be a teenager but Joan thinks she has no other recourse. Hell is the body of a teenage girl rejected and judged by the world.SLANTED is now playing, only in theaters.---Music provided Content ID free by @goodkidbandFollow The Movies on Instagram & LetterboxdThrow a couple dollars in the tip jar!
SLANTED is about a Chinese-American teen (Shirley Chen) who undergoes an experimental surgery to transform her body into that of a blonde, blue-eyed white girl. She steps in looking like Shirley Chen, comes out looking like McKenna Grace. Why? She wants to be prom queen. She wants to be exalted, adored, loved, appreciated for her contributions, not dismissed or treated unfairly due to her race and oh...this is gonna backfire, isn't it?I interviewed writer/director Amy Wang about the movie, its origins, symbology, production process and the intricacies of building a unique dual role using two actresses. Dr. Stephanie J. Wong talks with stars of Slanted, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever) and Amelie Zilber about the thought-provoking movie that uses sci-fi horror to examine beauty standards, assimilation and the cost of belonging. The film follows Joan Huang (Shirley Chen), a high school outsider who idolizes the popular girls and dreams of becoming prom queen, but fears the only way to win is to look like every past queen whose portraits line the school halls. When she discovers Ethnos, a mysterious cosmetic surgery clinic that turns people White, Joan undergoes the procedure and wakes up as a blonde girl (Mckenna Grace) seemingly destined for the crown. As her transformation brings popularity and power, it also exposes the disturbing personal and cultural cost of erasing one's identity. Highlights of the interview: Dr. Wong asking Maitreyi about the powerful line she added to the script, asking her best friend if she thinks she's ugly, too? Amelie's methods for playing a multi-faceted character The trio laughing in agreement about a specific scene (watch and listen to find out)! That Ghostface killer just won't go away because while he's stacking bodies in these Scream movies, he's also stacking large stacks of cash for the movie studio. Therefore, I now present you “Scream 7”, the latest in the blood-soaked, big bucks franchise, started way back in 1996. In these movies, we're now in the era where the final girl from most of the early Scream movies, Neve Campbell as Sydney Prescott, has had movies and books written about Ghostface killers terrorizing her. She's a celebrity and she's back as the main character in this latest installment. Joining her from the 1996 movie cast is Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers, the former news reporter and now media personality. A major new player introduced in “Scream 7” is Sydney's daughter, Tatum, played by Isabel May and she's the typical rebellious, moody teenager girl who annoys her Mom. Throughout the course of this movie, she learns she needs her Mom, and her experience with the psycho killer in the mask and black robe. Will mother and daughter survive this movie? Is it worth going to the theater to find out? Find out in this episode of Movies Merica! “Scream 7” also stars Jasmin Savoy-Brown, Mason Gooding, Joel McHale, McKenna Grace, Anna Camp, Celeste O'Connor, Sam Rechner, Asa Germann, Matthew Lillard, Kraig Dane, Ethan Embry and Mark Consuelos. In March 2024, Campbell confirmed her return to the franchise after being absent from the last film, with series creator Kevin Williamson hired to direct the film after serving as writer and producer on the early films in the series. This latest entry follows a new Ghostface killer who targets Sidney Prescott's daughter. After all the controversy surrounding its production, what did we think of the final product? This film was co written and directed by Kevin Williamson, is the 7th film in the series and serves as a direct sequel to 2023's “Scream VI”. The film sees Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, Jasmine Savoy Brown & Mason Gooding return to their respective roles while being joined by newcomers Isabel May, McKenna Grace, Anna Camp & Jimmy Tatro. In this film, Sydney Prescott and her daughter are hunted by the dreaded Ghostface killer from the home in Indiana to their hometown of Woodsboro but things take an unexpected turn when the killer uses familiar faces and tactics cover their identity as their kill count grows. Kevin Williamson had written the 2 films in the franchise as well as the fourth film and served as a producer throughout the franchise but never stepped into the directors role making this film the second film he's ever directed. After the departure of the previous films cast and crew, which included stars Melissa Barrera & Jenny Ortega and the directors, Paramount had rewrite the script which also led to the return of Neve Campbell who was not in the previous film. The film hit theaters nationwide on February 25th, 2026.

FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S IS BACK WITH A SEQUEL…BUT IS IT A SNOOZER OR A SMASHER? ALSO…WHO ASKED FOR THIS?!!?!?Mike joins a very glossy lipped Cupcake to review Cupcake's future husband - Josh Hutcherson's - new movie - Five Nights at Freddy's 2, the sequel to the 2023 original, based on the games and stories written by Christian-conservative Trump Supporter Scott Cawthon. With director Emma Tammi and fellow castmembers Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio and Matthew Lillard returning along with some new actors (Skeet Ulrich, McKenna Grace, and Teo Briones), the sequel has buzz and anticipation. But ultimately is this second chapter worthy of the hype (and a possible bridge to a threequel?) or will it make anyone unfamiliar with the source material go running screaming in the other direction?GRAB YOUR FLASHLIGHT AND MARIONETTE STRINGS…LET'S HEAR YOU SCREAM FOR THE NEW WATCH SKIP PLUS!TIMESTAMPS00:00 Opening01:43 Intro03:48 Five Nights At Freddy's 2: Below and Above the Line15:04 Spoiler Free Thoughts30:36 FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S 2 SPOILED43:45 Outro- - - - - - - - - -WE ARE WATCH SKIP PLUS! The gang's all here, and this week they cover IT: Welcome to Derry, Nobody Wants This Season 2, A return to A House of Dynamite, Regretting You, and The Perfect Neighbor. We open the show jumping right into the hottest new series, IT: Welcome to Derry. Kevin and Andrew have both watched the first episode, and Kevin's seen the second. Both guys have enjoyed the show so far, and Kevin keeps the second episode talk pretty spoiler-free. But the show itself is BRUTAL. It is like Stranger Things dialed up to (pun intended) Eleven. If horror is your thing, this is an absolute must-watch. Taking a break from the absolute massacre that is the opening of IT, Lauren talks about the latest season of Nobody Wants This on Netflix. It stars Adam Brody and Kristen Bell as an on-again, off-again couple dealing with the strains of a potential interfaith relationship. That makes it sound very dramatic, but it really is a lot of fun. The leads are great, but a lot of credit goes to the supporting cast, too. It's a well-rounded show that does risk getting tropey if they don't get creative with the 3rd season. That being said, this one (and the first one) is worth a watch. After some talk about things happy and fun, Andrew takes us back to last week's episode for a minute to talk about A House of Dynamite. His timeline was hit by several people who absolutely hated the ending, so the guys had to clear the air as to what this film was truly about. Remember, it's not about the destination, it's about the journey. And now that it's been a week, the guys can be a little more spoilery. So if you haven't watched it yet, and you should, maybe pause the show, watch it, then come back. Next up, Lauren talks about the new film, Regretting You. It stars Mason Thames, McKenna Grace, Allison Williams, and Dave Franco. It's not an entirely unformulaic romance film, but it does have its share of little twists and turns that keep it interesting. It may not blow you away, but if it's your type of film, you're likely to really enjoy it. Kevin closes out the show, reluctantly, by quickly discussing the new Netflix documentary, The Perfect Neighbor. It's an interesting film, as all the footage is either from interrogation rooms or, more often, body cam footage. It's the tragic story of a racially charged shooting in Florida and how it ultimately ties into the Stand Your Ground laws. It's fascinating and heartbreaking, but an interesting story worth watching. Facebook: @apncpodcast Twitter: @APNCPodcast Instagram: AllPopNoCulture
