In this episode of Film Stories with Simon Brew, the film that gave Tim Burton his first hit in over half a decade, and a golfing comedy that took a bit of a path to the screen.Director Tim Burton lost around a year of his working life when the planned Superman Lives film with Nicolas Cage collapsed. Which is when a script to Sleepy Hollow - that had been sat in Hollywood development for years - was sent in his direction. The script for the charming The Phantom Of The Open originally got no traction at all. As such, its story was published in a book, an option was taken out on said book, and the process had to pretty much start all over again.Find Simon on Twitter at @simonbrew, and the podcast can be found at @filmstoriesSupport this podcast: www.patreon.com/simonbrew.Find our print magazines at store.filmstories.co.uk Hosted on Acast. In 1996, Warner Brothers engaged Kevin Smith to write the screenplay ('Superman Lives'). Director Tim Burton assembled an elite group of artists to work on Superman Lives, including Nicolas Cage as Superman. Warner Brothers scrapped the project shortly before principal photography began The film received praise from critics. Chris Stuckmann (film critic) wrote: This well-researched documentary provides a fun and intriguing answer to one of cinemas strangest questions: What if Nicolas Cage had portrayed Superman?

Welcome to another podcast in our occasional series – Director on Director. Writer / Director Phil Stubbs (Last Chancers) joins us again, to talk about another of his favourite directors, Tim Burton. Join us on a journey that starts with Tim's early days at Disney and ends with .... Tim's recent time at Disney. This is a journey that starts with imaginative characters set in fantastical worlds and gradually, over the years devolves into corporate pleasing, sequels and soulless remakes. During our discussion we draw a line in Tim Burton's filmography where we think things started to go stale. The journey ends on a "bit of a downer" but the masterpieces of the 80's and 90's are discussed in full. A unique talent whose many films include such classics as Beetlejuice, Batman, Ed Wood and Mars Attacks. How do you rate Mr Burton, please let us know, as always we would love to hear from you.
Director Tim Burton is known for his gothic eccentricity and distinctive visual style. Nowhere is this more evident than in his second feature film, Beetlejuice. A tale of death and dismemberment that somehow plays as a family film, Beetlejuice helped propel Burton to Legendary status, as well as cementing the movie star status of Michael Keaton (who would don the cape and cowl for Burton the following year) and Winona Ryder (who would return to the decade that made her famous in Stranger Things.) But thirty years later, is Beetlejuice still the Ghost with the Most. Oh, crap I said his name three times! This is Legends of Halloween! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! These discussions will be spoiler filled and may explicit language, so consider yourself warned. For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''.
