Dana and Tom welcome back guest, Terry Bartley (Author (https://www.terrybartleywriter.com/) and Host (Most Writers are Fans podcast)), and new guest, Adam Freed (Managing Editor and Senior Film Critic at (MovieArcher.com)), to discuss the seminal comic book film, Batman (1989): directed by Tim Burton, written by Sam Hamm and Walter Skaaren, music by Danny Elfman, starring Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, and Billy Dee Williams.Plot Summary: In Tim Burton's "Batman," we are plunged into a dark, brooding Gotham City where crime festers in the shadows and hope seems a distant dream. The film opens with a scene that establishes the city's grim atmosphere, a place where danger lurks around every corner. Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton), the reclusive billionaire, conceals a dual identity as the masked vigilante, Batman, striving to bring order to the chaos."Batman" is a triumph of style over substance, a visual feast that captures the essence of the Dark Knight. It is a film where the atmosphere and aesthetic take precedence, creating an unforgettable experience that redefined the superhero genre. Batman may be a figure shrouded in darkness, but Burton's film sheds a new light on the mythology of the caped crusader.Chapters:00:00 Welcome and a New Guest07:48 Cast and Recognition for Batman (1989)12:47 Relationship(s) to the Film31:06 What is Batman (1989) about?36:41 Why does Batman seem to be more popular and relatable than other "superheroes"?41:28 Is Batman (1989) responsible for the Superhero Boom?47:21 Plot Summary48:30 Did You Know?52:14 First Break53:00 Where to Find our Guests Work...57:22 Ask Dana Anything - Follow-Up59:22 Best Performance(s)01:13:05 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)01:26:16 Second Break01:27:12 In Memoriam01:28:10 Best/Funniest Lines01:30:03 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:39:20 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:50:35 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:55:18 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness02:01:26 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability02:07:50 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Total Score02:09:13 Remaining Questions for Batman (1989)02:25:43 Guest Thank You(s)02:27:56 Closing and CreditsYou can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at Greatest Movie of All-Time Podcast. For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com//post/batman-1989-ft-terry-bartley-and-adam-freedFor the entire rankings list so far, go to:Full Graded List - Greatest Movies of All-Time Ronny Duncan Studios Keywords: Batman, film, Tim Burton, generational ownership, cultural impact, box office success, Tim Burton, Batman, Joker, relatability, duality, societal context, superhero genre, Jack Nicholson, Danny Elfman, Batman, 1989, scenes, lines, performances, depth, theme song, Kim Basinger, Vicky Vale, script, Tim Burton, direction, pacing, camera work, Best Scene, indelible moments, legacy, film, Batman, impact, significance, legacy, originality, execution, classicness, rewatchability, audience score, Batman, ranking, films, Joker, Kim Basinger, actresses, Hollywood, Batmobile,...

Step back into the Gotham of Tim Burton's seminal Batman movies! Batman '89 brings in screenwriter Sam Hamm (Batman, Batman Returns) and artist Joe Quinones (Dial H for Hero) to pull on a number of threads left dangling by the prolific director. Gotham becomes torn in two as citizens dressed as Batman and The Joker duke it out in the streets. As D.A. Harvey Dent tries to keep the city together, he targets the one problem tearing it apart: Batman! But what happens next has dark ramifications for not just the Dark Knight, but Harvey Dent himself. Bruce Wayne embarks on a crusade to better Gotham as both himself and the Batman, but a young new hero on the scene stands in his way, claiming his mission is shortsighted. Meanwhile, Harvey Dent starts down a path leading to nothing but ruin. The fate of Gotham hangs in the balance as these two sides of the same coin do battle. But when the coin finally flips, on which side will it fall? It's the big Season 8 Finale! We are thrilled and honored to bring you our first (and probably only) cis male guest: Daniel Waters! He gets a P*ssy Pass for writing the film that inspired our podcast theme (Heathers) and another feminist classic: Batman Returns. This 1992 comic book sequel was directed by Tim Burton, and stars Michelle Pfeiffer in an absolutely iconic role that launched one million sexual awakenings. It was written by Waters, from a script by Sam Hamm, and then unsatisfactorily finished off by a real Normie named Wesley Strick. We consider it a Catwoman movie with 3 male villains hellbent on stopping Selina Kyle from embracing her true nature. Join us as we pester Daniel Waters with questions about Heathers, and discuss what went wrong as well as what went SO. VERY. RIGHT. with Batman Returns. And because it's a Christmas Movie, our Lunchtime Poll is about worst and best Christmases.

Today's show features one of our favorite films of all time, the 1992 Tim Burton classic BATMAN RETURNS, which celebrates its 30th anniversary on June 16, 2022.When Batman's 1989 theatrical run ended, it left theaters with a haul of $251M domestically, $411M worldwide, and was the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time. Naturally, Warner Bros wanted to get to work on a sequel as quickly as possible. However, Batman was the largest studio production Tim Burton had ever done at the time, and he was burned out. Instead of running right into production on a second Batman movie, Burton opted to make a smaller and more personal film for 20th Century Fox called Edward Scissorhands. Following the end of production for Scissorhands, Warner was already in production on the next Batman and wanted to ramp up the villainy by having two villains for the sequel. Turning to screenwriter Sam Hamm who offered a story that focused on the villains Catwoman and The Penguin. Warner Bros then offered Burton the option of either directing another Batman or a Beetlejuice sequel. Ultimately, Burton decided on Batman because he was a fan of “animal people,” and the sequel provided an opportunity to do the kind of Batman story he loved as a kid. The rest is movie-making history. In this show, we do more than a movie review by delving into the lives of the cast and crew, fan theories, trivia, scene breakdowns, and anything related to the film itself. Needless to say, our shows are a little longer than your average movie review show, but we can assure you that our shows are jam packed with entertaining and interesting discussions. If that sounds like your sort of bag, hang out with Kenny and Del as they get into Batman Returns. When you were last on this show way back in November we spoke a little bit about the worldbuilding you're doing, and it appears this week's Mighty Morphin #10 pays off in that regard in a big way!Given how much has come before and where we are now, how far out have you plotted the Power Rangers universe? This issue finally revealed the secret origin of Lord Zedd. How exciting/nerve-wracking was it to be able to tell that story at long last? What has the fan response been like Mighty Morphin #10? - he's covered this I think! This series has been full of cosmic visuals, and the latest issue has kicked that up a notch. Has there been a particular sequence where Dan Mora just blew you away and surprised you with how he brought it to life? You're playing with Power Rangers history that goes back thousands of years, is there any desire to go into the future and play in that realm? This book uses flashbacks, flashfowards, might it start using flashsideways, is it fun to play with people's perceptions and sort of build change how we think about these established characters? Can you tease anything coming up with the Eltarian War arc? - kinda covering this tooIf you were to rank Power Rangers villains as favorite, and favorite to write, what would your list be? A Batman ‘89 comic?! For another “Live Action Live” episode, Ben goes live on YouTube to talk about the upcoming Batman ‘89 comic, which appears to have design influence from both Batman Beyond and Batman the Animated Series. ‘89’s original screenwriter Sam Hamm is teaming up with artist, Joe Quinones, and “Batman ‘89” is set for digital first release from DC, July 2021. Ben also covers the live action news of Sasha Calle as Supergirl in 2022’s Flash film, along with Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck both returning as Batman. Finally, one of the biggest video game franchises of all time gets a cinematic adaptation/reboot, talking about last week’s unbelievably bad ass Mortal Kombat trailer! It’s the conclusion of Sam Hamm’s Watchmen, and it’s worth noting that this is now SAM HAMM’S WATCHMEN, because the finale bears absolutely NO resemblance to Alan Moore’s Watchmen and is, in fact, completely incompatible with the world that Moore established. This whole episode is a series of “wait, what?” moments for anyone with even a passing familiarity with Watchmen. Time bubbles, main characters vaporized, and a turn for the meta that feels like Hamm ran out of ideas but really needed to meet a deadline. If you thought most of this script was a fairly boring and straightforward re-trace of the major points go Watchmen, then this is the part where all that is thrown out the window! Like this podcast? It’s 1989. Alan Moore’s Watchmen is a commercial and critical success. Batmania is taking the nation by storm, ushering in a golden age for superhero movies. So there’s only one thing to do: Hire the Batman guy to write a script for Watchmen… and hire Terry Gilliam to direct!Does all of that sound too good to be true? Well, if you’ve paid any attention to what this podcast is about, then, yeah, it should. That’s kinda what we’re about here. This first part of Sam Hamm’s Watchmen script gives us a glimpse at the downfall of the superhero team known as “the Watchmen.” Yes, we know that they’re never actually called that in the comics. TELL SAM HAMM, NOT US. Because they are explicitly referred to by this name. It’s a whole, weird opening sequence set at the Statue of Liberty, complete with Dr. Manhattan, an oddly glib Rorschach, and one exploding superhero. Who? Well, hit play and find out! Jack Nicholson is the Joker, who emerged from a horrible accident as a maniacal criminal. Michael Keaton is the Caped Crusader, who emerged from a childhood trauma to become a masked crimefighter. Kim Basinger is Vicki Vale, the talented photojournalist desired by both men. And Batman is the movie, the all-out spectacular directed by Tim Burton, set to songs by Prince and a music score by Danny Elfman, and an Academy AwardO winner* for Best Art Direction/Set Decoration (Anton Furst and Peter Young).Director: Tim BurtonWriters: Bob Kane (Batman characters), Sam Hamm (story)Michael Keaton...Batman / Bruce WayneJack Nicholson...Joker / Jack NapierKim Basinger...Vicki ValeRobert Wuhl...Alexander KnoxPat Hingle...Commissioner GordonBilly Dee Williams...Harvey DentMichael Gough...AlfredIn honor of its 30th anniversary, we talk 1989’s Batman.Does the movie hold up? Writer of the 1989 Batman movie Sam Hamm sits down to talk about his time working on the film and his first introduction to the character.
Andy and Jamie take an in-depth look at Sam Hamm's script for Batman 2, the proposed sequel to Tim Burton's iconic Batman, which also pitted the Caped Crusader against the Penguin and Catwoman. You want to get nuts? Come on... let's get nuts. It's the 100th episode of HDYR and there really was never any question which film we were going to revisit for this milestone. If you're even a little bit familiar with this show, you probably could have guessed - it had to be Batman. This one made quite an impression on all three of us as kids and for Chris in particular, this was a formative movie-going experience. Which is not to say he can't be objective about some of its more controversial elements. This is a fairly divisive adaptation of the Caped Crusader's mythology and a lot of the criticisms are valid. But are those betrayals of the source material a deal breaker or are they outweighed by the elements this gets right? Topics include: the decade long journey to get Batman on the silver screen, previous incarnations of the film before Tim Burton got involved, some surprising alternate casting choices for both Batman and The Joker, how Vicki and Knox were better served by earlier versions of this script, why the movies can't ever quite nail that Harvey Dent/Two-Face transformation, the heavily rewritten third act (which at one point introduced Robin!), the plot of Sam Hamm's original Batman 2 script, our thoughts on this Joker in a post-Dark Knight world, who our favorite live-action Batman is, and much much more! iTunes / Stitcher / RSS / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram About The Show

In our third installment of Underground Inc we get into the greatest super hero of all time (in my opinion). We get into Batman. As the title would suggest this episode surrounds Batman (1989) staring Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Kim Basinger. Directed by Tim Burton, written by Sam Hamm and Warren Skaaran.Throughout the conversations like always we get debates and interesting facts. There are things you may not have ever known about the actors, or characters in the movie, and some things you may have already known but forgotten and just where reminded. Will we get into the much debated question who plays the best Batman, and who plays the best Joker? Will there be a discussion on who could have played whom? Will I be able to make it through the movie without getting extremely defensive for Batman? Only one way to find out. Tune in and listen, to get an extra effect, join us in watching the movie, how could you turn down an opportunity to watch Batman (1989)? I have no idea, but lets see if you can.Warning this podcast contains spoilers of this movie as well as others. We try to warn you before a spoiler is reveled to other movies.www.undergroundinc.infowww.facebook.com/undergroundinc3www.twitter.com/UndergroundInc3

As the air turns crisps and people start putting cooky faces on pumpkins, it can only mean one thing- we have to check our episodes from last year to figure out how we do Halloween episodes. And this time, we do Halloween with The Real Ghost Busters (the space is canonical, look it up!) and the episode "When Halloween Was Forever." In this episode, we are playing a man (or WO-man, as it is) short, but we do our best to make up for it by talking about more nonsense than usual. We discuss the origin of Halloween, how Dan Aykroyd wasn't that fat in 1984, the punctuation needed to find the true meaning of the lyrics of "Walking on Sunshine", how terrible Roger Moore's Bond films are (KANANGA IS INFLATED TO DEATH!!!), whether or not you should be eating Creepy Crawlers (answer: no) and we go in depth on the honors bestowed at the annual Fart Expo (that's why Andrea isn't with us.) We also get booked with two interviewees, one on purpose, the episode's antagonist and spirit of Halloween, Samhain as well as the easy-to-mistake-for-Samhain, Hollywood screenwriter Sam Hamm. But they get along and it's a terrific interview. As the episode intro says, if you want to help spread the word of our show, vote for #7 "Wormy Autumn Nights" in the Flophouse Song of the Autumn Contest! Thanks for listening!
On this episode of Word Balloon we presenty a double feature with two artistc masters. First up, part one of a conversation with John Romita Jr. We talk about his current run on Avengerswith Brian Bendis and Kick Ass 2 with Mark Millar. John also previews a creator owned series in the works with Howard Chaykin. A 1970's New York crime/fantasy pastiche called Schmuggy anfd Bimbo. Then Milestone founder Denys Cowan heads a panel recorded at this past weekend's Summit City Comioc Con with fellow artists Angel Gabriel and Jeff Newman. Cowan and company recall their early days assiting Deathlok creator Rich Buckler when Denys was 14. Our reaserch exposed a dark secret to the audience, forcing Gabriel and Cowan to confess to their time in the 80's in regional TV Wrestling on a show called POWERSLAM with infamous stars like Dick The Bruiser and Ox Baker.Gabriel was known as THe Dark Angel, and Denys was a manager (check you tube) Then Denys talks about his days on titles like The Question, Black Panther, Power Man and Iron Fist, and a classic Batman run with Sam Hamm (the screenwriter of the 1989 Tim Burton Batman film). He also tells the story of the formation of Milestone and the creation of their line of multi-racial heroes. He reminices about his friend the late Dwayne McDuffie, who was the first creator he approached to join the venture, and talks about the succeses and struglles that came after the company debuted. The panel talk about the creation of Hardware and the symbolic metaphor of the glass celing struggle the creators dealt with. Then Denys hints at 2 new upcoming projects a 5 part Batman story about the 5 phases of accepting death by Paul Levitz, and a new Vertigo mini series with Selwyn Hinds, who worked on Case 21 with Cowan in the recent STRANGE ADVENTURES anthology.
