It's another jam-packed banger on the Empire Podcast this week, folks, as Chris Hewitt sits down for a triple whammy of interviews. First, there's Saoirse Ronan, star/producer of affecting drama The Outrun, and her co-star Paapa Essiedu, who talk about bonding, improvisation, and shooting on location. [19:13 - 33:45 approx] Then, there's Josh Greenbaum, director of Will & Harper, the excellent documentary that follows Will Ferrell and his writer friend of three decades, Harper Steele, on a cross-country road trip in the aftermath of Harper's recent transition to living as a woman. [54:27 - 1:13:03 approx] And finally, there's a big chunk of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice spoiler special goodness with that film's writers and executive producers, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. [1:40:01 - 1:55:27 approx] Either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer to discuss directors whose careers have received a boost from working in the MCU, take a look at the week's movie news (this was recorded before the sad news of the death of Dame Maggie Smith), and review Will & Harper, Wolfs, The Outrun, and Megalopolis, a review so immense it has added ballast in the form of Alex Godfrey. Oh, and the team discover Bump Juice. To find out what it is, listen on. Enjoy.

“I think what Tim [Burton] does is he's always trying to simplify. That's the essence of a classic filmmaker. People think he's wild and crazy and does all these things. His movies are brilliantly composed frames and he's always looking for simplicity. All of his big movies, they're really family dramas dressed up in whatever genre he's in. That's really what they are. And I think people think he's always strange and weird and likes dark thing, but no! It's a classic story with good drama. And then he brings his sensibility to it,” says about the biggest lesson Al Gough has learned working with director Tim Burton on both the TV show Wednesday and the new film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. In this episode, we speak with writing team Al Gough and Miles Millar about creating the hit Netflix show Wednesday, how they cultivated a relationship with director Tim Burton and how that led to the sequel to Beetlejuice after more than 15 sequel scripts have surfaced over the last 36 years. Gough and Miles talk about crafting a mother/daughter love story for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and delving into grief, something that all families face at some point or another. The writers also share their insight into adding new characters in the mix and creating the strange yet rewarding musical numbers for the movie that includes one totally bonkers song. Miles Millar also shares this career advice about staying in your lane when it comes to genre: “If you write a spec or a script that sells, and it's a romantic comedy, then you should really stay in the romantic comedy world and arena for a while. We always jumped around which I think hurt us initially. We did an action movie, we did a comedy, we did this, we did that. We did a fantasy. So, pick a lane. I think successful writers usually pick a lane and get known to do one thing – which can be constricting and suffocating, but I think it's something that's important in terms of a career.” Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is out now in theaters.

Hey everyone, welcome back to another review here on MOVIE Morning. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the follow-up to the Tim Burton classic 'Beetlejuice', has now hit theaters worldwide. To be honest, I only saw the first Beetlejuice for the first time last week and while I somewhat enjoyed it, it's by no means a formative film for me like for so many of my other fellow film fans. Does the sequel have the classic potential of the original or is it another unnecessary and bland legacy sequel? Find out in this NON-SPOILER review! In a thrilling update for fans of Netflix's hit series "Wednesday," Steve Buscemi has been confirmed to join the cast of the show's eagerly anticipated second season. According to exclusive information obtained by Variety, the celebrated actor will take on the role of the new principal of Nevermore Academy, though further details about his character remain shrouded in secrecy. Buscemi, renowned for his versatile performances across both dramatic and comedic roles, adds significant star power to the already popular series. His rich career portfolio includes memorable roles in films such as "Reservoir Dogs," "Fargo," and "The Death of Stalin," as well as his acclaimed work on television shows like "Boardwalk Empire" and "The Sopranos." His addition is expected to bring a new dynamic to the quirky and dark universe of "Wednesday." "Wednesday," which debuted in November 2022, follows Jenna Ortega in her role as the enigmatic Wednesday Addams as she navigates the complexities of teenage life at Nevermore Academy. The first season saw her tackling a series of grisly mysteries and sinister plots against her school, setting high expectations for the new season's narrative arc. Netflix representatives, as well as those from Buscemi's camp, have declined to comment on this casting development. The production of Season 2 faced delays due to industry-wide strikes last year but is slated to commence later this month in Ireland. The series is created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with Tim Burton also contributing as an executive producer and director of the initial episodes. Season 1's success led to multiple Emmy nominations, cementing "Wednesday" as a critical and fan favorite. Steve Buscemi's entry into the "Wednesday" universe not only excites fans but also promises to infuse the new season with his unique blend of charm and intensity. As the new principal, his character is poised to become a central figure in the unfolding mysteries and adventures at Nevermore Academy.

The surprise hit and breakout role for Jenna Ortega as the titular character in Netflix's spin off of the Addams Family, Wednesday, was just as exciting to create as it is to watch. "The writer's room started the first week of lockdown, so writing a Wednesday show during a global pandemic felt on brand," says creator Al Gough about writing the pilot before selling the show to Netflix. Final Draft's Write On Podcast sits down with Gough and his co-creators Miles Millar to hear about how they revitalized this character with a modern twist and brought back nostalgia with the return of Christina Ricci in the 8-episode series that follows Wednesday's life as she attends a boarding school for other teens with magical abilities. Wednesday is currently streaming on Netflix.

Tune in as Arthur's buddy Kailey hangs out on 2CC for a deep dive into Wednesday, the 2022 Netflix series that centers around Wednesday Addams—yes, the very same Wednesday of the morbidly eccentric Addams Family. Plenty of topics are discussed here, including a debate over the Love Triangle trope, the show‘s deliciously ruthless critique of colonialism and whitewashing, a supernatural plot twist in Riverdale that causes Arthur's brain to momentarily glitch out, and the worrisome COVID protocol on the set of Wednesday. Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville), Wednesday stars Jenna Ortega, Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer, Moosa Mostafa, Naomi J. Ogawa, Christina Ricci, Victor Dorobantu, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Iman Marson, Tommie Earl Jenkins, Fred Armisen, Isaac Ordonez, and George Burcea. Spoilers start at 37:50 Note: Kailey and I recorded this back in December, so it isn't up-to-date in regard to all the speculation over whether or not Season 2 of Wednesday would move over to Prime Video. In any case, this isn't happening, since Netflix has officially renewed the show for another season. “Wednesday, for us, from concept until now, has been a three and a half year journey,” said Alfred Gough. “We came up with the initial idea which was teenage Wednesday Addams in boarding school. We had to track down the rights and then we pitched it to the Addams Foundation.” As screenwriters, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are known for Shanghai Noon, Smallville, I Am Number Four, Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Into the Badlands. Their latest creation is perhaps most similar to the creation of Smallville, the Superman origin series. Listen to our conversation about Into the Badlands in Episode 52. Miles Millar said, “Tonally, this is in the pocket of Smallville. Often times, the studio comes to you, but this time, it was our idea. We put together a 15-page series treatment with photographs, descriptions, log lines for episodes, and that led to a meeting. We had to do the legwork, write the spec treatment, but we felt passionate about the project and fell in love with the idea of doing this.” “From there, we wrote the first episode, that's when the pandemic hit. We sent the pilot script to Tim Burton's agent, even though his agent said he's never been interested in television,” he continued, “but the agent liked it and sent it to Tim. Four days later, we got a call, he loved it and wanted to meet.” Tim Burton told Alfred Gough and Miles Millar that he “loved the script” and “would have dated Wednesday Addams in high school.” They shot the series in Romania about a year later. Al and Miles talk about landing Tony Todd, why going over budget almost cost them their jobs, and the crazy reasons that more than four different directors were involved in its making. We also talk about the wire work in the final collapsing bridge scene, John Glover transitioning from a guest star, and a defense for the Freak of the Week template. ❤️ Subscribe and share to support the new pod! ☎️ Hotline: (213) 538-2883 Learn more about your ad choices. Ronnie Adams of the Source Material Podcast joins Mark Radulich to discuss the one and only episode of the Aquaman TV show from 2006 on this TV Party Tonight. Aquaman is a television pilot developed by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar for The WB Television Network, based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Gough and Millar wrote the pilot, which was directed by Greg Beeman. Justin Hartley starred as Arthur "A.C." Curry, a young man living in a beachside community in the Florida Keys who learns about his powers and destiny as the Prince of Atlantis. The Aquaman pilot was expected to debut in the fall schedule of 2006, but following the merger of the WB and UPN, the resulting CW Network opted not to buy the series. After they passed on the pilot, it was made available online through iTunes in the United States and became the number-one most downloaded television show on iTunes. It received generally favorable reviews, was later released on other online markets, and aired on Canadian television network YTV.
