Free State of Jones, despite Dave Chapelle's opinion, is a wonderful movie to watch from start to finish, you be the judge.
“War is war, and not popularity-seeking.”This is the story of the fall of Atlanta. William Tecumseh “Cump” Sherman is leading three armies in an attack against this vital city in the Peach State. His forces are formidable, but so are his opponents: Confederate master of defense, Joseph E. “Joe” Johnston; and the far more aggressive Confederate General John B. Hood. The loss of life will be staggering and include prominent figures on both sides. There’s also rebelling brewing within the rebellion. Care to meet secessionists who’ve seceded from the secession? Welcome to Mississippi’s “Free State of Jones.”
In this episode I look at the Confederate Home Front and all the discontent that happened during the war from beginning to end. Many in the South felt that they were fighting a rich mans war and a poor mans fight. I look at conscription, desertion, riots and various acts of violence that plagued the Confederacy throughout the war.

I was very pleased to speak with Dr. Victoria Bynum...who wrote the book The Free State of Jones, which inspired the Matthew McConaughey film of the same name. Free State of Jones is an American war film inspired by the life of Newton Knight and his armed rebellion against the Confederacy in Jones County, Mississippi, during the American Civil War. Written and directed by Gary Ross, the film stars Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali and Keri Russell. Crisis in Six Scenes is Woody Allen's first television series. Made for Amazon Studios it also stars Miley Cyrus and Elaine May and is set during the turbulent years of the late 1960s in the USA. The Royal Academy of Arts in London presents the first major exhibition of Abstract Expressionism to be held in the UK for six decades and features work by Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still amongst many others. Award winning writer Rachel Cusk's new novel Transit documents a writer and her two young sons moving to London following a family collapse. There are many transitions to negotiate - personal, moral, artistic, practical as the writer endeavours to construct a new reality for herself and her children. Marking the bicentenary of Charlotte Bronte's birth, her novel Villette is brought to life in a striking new adaptation for the Courtyard Theatre in Leeds. Yorkshire writer Linda Marshall-Griffiths reimagines Charlotte Brontë's ground-breaking novel whilst remaining true to its unique insights into loneliness, yearning and the redemptive power of love. Tom Sutcliffe's guests are Katie Puckrik, Alex Clark and Francis Spufford. The producer was Hilary Dunn.

We normally have a couple of weeks between when we record and when we upload, but we moved this episode up because we think the discussion is relevant to our current cultural mood and we didn't want to lose that. Our hearts were heavy as we recorded last week and the movie we discuss is a great catalyst to understand that a lot of the problems America faced during the Civil War are still plaguing us today. I hope you enjoy the episode. Thanks so much for listening, it means a lot to us. http://myfriendbenpodcast.com https://www.facebook.com/myfriendbenpodcast/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel
Apparently Erik Estrada doesn’t just play a cop on TV anymore. He’s one in real life too, as the guys learn in this week’s episode. After they speculate about what would happen if Ponch was charged with police brutality, Evan reviews the first movie of the week: THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS (at 5:48). According to him, this cute animated film, which features an all-star voice cast, is strongest when it’s cracking jokes about animal clichés and making you feel genuine danger for its characters, but becomes increasingly predictable as it goes on. Next Kris reveals why FREE STATE OF JONES (at 21:11) is a dry film that turns a story about Reconstruction into a VH1 biography. This conversation leads to a tangent on why GONE WITH THE WIND shouldn’t be held in such high regard, before Evan wraps up with THE MAN IN THE WALL (at 42:48), an Israeli thriller that keeps you guessing with its tale of a missing husband and a wife who might have something to do with his disappearance. He eagerly plugs its screening at the Somerville Theatre on July 12 by the Boston Jewish Film Festival and recommends checking it out on Netflix streaming.

Free State of Jones may not be a gigantic "box-office smash" (currently it opened at #6 in its first weekend), but that shouldn't matter if the movie works, right? Here we have a piece of history not many know about: a man who rallied a group of poor farmers (and ex/runaway slaves) to make a 'free state of Jones' (as in the county) to combat those in the South in Mississippi who had too much while they were being sucked dry by the Confederacy to pay for the war. Sounds like a backwoods Civil War Robin Hood tale, right? Well, funny thing about that when a story takes place from 1862 to 1876... and then some. Jack and Andrew watched Matthew McConaughey's latest film for grown-ups in this blockbuster movie season. If you have any thoughts or historical corrections to make you can send all queries and angry emails to wagesofcinema@gmail.com (but don't be too angry, we're nice enough guys, or at least try to be...)
