For the first time, Law360 and Major, Lindsey, and Africa team up to survey BigLaw partners in their 2022 Partner Compensation Survey. We are joined by Craig Savitzky, Senior Data Analyst at Law360 and Jeffrey Lowe, Global Practice Leader of the Law Firm Practice at Major Lindsey and Africa. With this being the first survey of law firm partners since most firms have made some effort to return to the office, there were some surprises on how much remote work partners want to take versus how much their firms are offering. It may not be what you think. Women and minority partners made some strong gains according to this survey in narrowing the pay gap. While the gap is still significant between women/minority partners and their white male colleagues, this was the smallest percentage in the history of the survey which began in 2010. For the first time, the difference between average equity partner pay was more than $1 Million over average non-equity partner pay. Savitzky and Lowe unpack a lot of data from the survey for us. From a young age, Chris McChesney fell in love with Stephen Covey's application of principles over best practices. He wanted to be a part of Franklin Covey so much that he landed his first job with them over thirty years ago by pretending to be a newspaper reporter as a fake intern. That's dedication. Today McChesney is a National Best-Selling Author, Keynote Speaker, and Global Practice Leader with Franklin Covey. He sat down with Dustin Odham to discuss how to create some wildly important goals this summer. McChesney's book, the 4 Disciplines of Execution, proved influential to Odham in his career path, so he asked McChesney to share the origins behind the approach. Through a Franklin Covey consultant some twenty-five years ago, McChesney saw doing unique work with organizational design that first got his wheels turning. Eventually, the portion that drew the most interest for McChesney was execution and how to execute strategy effectively. The 4 Disciplines of Execution came out ten years ago, and with a decade of putting these ideas into practice, the question is, what makes these disciplines still valid today? “There were a couple of things that were just huge,” McChesney said. “One of them was the whirlwind. People are shocked when they learn that we were at this for three years before putting our finger on the whirlwind and this idea of urgency addiction. It's not about executing a goal. It's about executing a goal in the face of this other force, which is the energy required to maintain the operation.” And the second thing was a conscious decision not to let the four disciplines be an overarching system. That doesn't mean learnings from the years of putting these ideas into practice can't change over time. There is a second edition of the book. “Between the first and second editions of the book, there were some common areas where leaders struggle,” McChesney said. “We were so close to the methodology, we knew what we meant, but sometimes what you mean isn't what you say. And we were much more deliberate about it in the second edition.”

The Hackett Group Senior Director, GBS Advisory Penny Weller talks with Principal and Global GBS Advisory Practice Leader Martijn Geerling about the impact of inflation on global business services and shared services operations.Show Notes:Welcome to The Hackett Group's Business Excelleration Podcast, where - week after week - we hear from experts on how to avoid obstacles, manage detours, and celebrate milestones on the journey to world-class performance. Today's episode is hosted by Penny Weller, Senior Director of Global Business Services at The Hackett Group. Her guest is Martijn Geerling, Global Practice Leader for GBS Advisory at Hackett. The focus of today's discussion is the impact of inflation on GBS operations. North America and Europe have risen markedly in the last year. This conflict, especially in the Ukraine area, is accelerating inflation with energy and food prices. While some of the inflation is transient, we actually found that it is on the rise and here to stay for longer than we initially thought. To begin, Martijn explains why inflation is important and why it matters from a GBS perspective. The main concern for GBS leaders, he reveals, is around labor costs. Consumer prices across most rich countries, like the U.S. and Europe, are up at least 8%. Aside from labor costs, other concerns for GBS leaders are turnover and outsourcing costs. Operationally, it has an impact on things like management and working capital. Cost of labor is one thing, but the cost of capital for organizations is also increasing.  Then, they focus on the point of the impact of inflation on outsourcing contracts. This is something which is really top of mind for many organizations today. In the U.S., the great resignation is a major theme. Rates in offshore locations have gone up and many GBS organizations have experienced at least 8-10% inflation. In our annual GBS study, we see that rates in Western Europe average about 10%, while offshore locations report rates of 15-19%. This raises anxiety around the impact of the rising cost of labor and living on salaries. Some organizations are offering higher rates to attract people to their organization. In places like India, what we've seen is that working from home has changed the equation. If you recruit, labor goes up and there are those extra fees by hiring fees, training and more. Looking at the type of process GBS organizations are using (purchase-to-pay, order-to-cash, cash management), they are not necessarily new. There are a number of best practices which organizations need to focus on. This includes things like implementing supplier payment policy, payment clocks, payment term optimization and looking at pricing and analytics. This is where GBS organizations can support the enterprise. Right now, there should be a focus on reviewing technology spent and examining cost categories in GBS. This includes determining whether there is a budget for salary increases. Cost of hiring and training needs to be reset in alignment with new assumptions around inflation. Another area impacted is in outsourcing agreements. Some organizations, if they haven't looked into this, may be in for an unpleasant surprise. As the episode draws to a close, Martijn shares his predictions for what GBS leaders can expect in terms of inflation in the near future. The inflation is not transient and will not be going away this year, or perhaps next. Some drivers are pandemic-related, supply chains are completely out of whack. What unfortunately isn't going away is the impact of the next crisis, the global war in Ukraine. We are all aware of the price hikes of oil and gas. Martijn expects that the cost of food and fertilizer will begin to rise even more and have a significant impact on the cost of living. Inflation will be running high into 2023. With these kinds of things, forecasting is always about the assumptions.

Covey wants you to trust your employees. And he wants you to do so by putting in the time to truly connect with them — while resisting the urge to micromanage. “You're truly empowering people around an agreement with clear expectations and with accountability,” he says of his “trust and inspire” leadership model. “And with that, you can do so much more. People will actually judge themselves against the agreement and report back to you, instead of you having to hover.” Stephen's leadership career began in 1989 when, after graduating from Harvard Business School with an MBA, and with nearly two years of experience as a leasing agent with Trammell Crow Company under his belt, he was at a crossroad. “I was really debating going back to [Trammell Crow] after getting my MBA when my father said, ‘why don't you join with me?'” Stephen recalls. And when your father is the author of “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” joining him is decidedly the correct choice.  So, they worked together to create the Covey Leadership Center, and Stephen climbed the ranks from Client Partner to CEO over the course of the next five years. But eventually, Stephen realized he had more to offer the world, leading him to write three books around the concept of trust and inspire leadership. In this episode, he explains the ins and outs of this concept and why it's the necessary replacement for the “command and control” model.  “You win in the workplace when you build and inspire a high-trust culture, and you win in the marketplace when you collaborate and innovate.
