Compassion + Empathy as you lead a company and mentor others, with Mike Payne, owner of Hill Manufacturing

Do you have empathy? It can be quick to just say “yes!” But do you really? When a direct report's numbers are suddenly down, are you quick to say in your mind, “What the heck is going on here?!” Or do you think to yourself, ‘I hope they are okay.' then follow up with the right questions? This is easier for some leaders than others, which is understandable. However, today's guest Mike Payne explains why he can't afford to NOT be empathetic and communicative with his teams.    In this episode, you'll discover…  What is a key trait to winning at work, and at home? (1:25) Talking about personal and professional life in 1:1 meetings (7:28) How knowing his employee's temperament, helped him to be empathetic (12:40) Why Sabbaticals are so important. (16:35) Mike's Bio:  I am an entrepreneurial executive that has been blessed to find myself in my dream career. How did I get so lucky?  Out of college I worked in the software space, focused most specifically on manufacturers, and went through a few rounds of investment and eventually an exit. This experience early on in my career prompted two passions; business funding/transactions and manufacturing.  Over the last 20+ years I have had the humbling opportunity to assist in funding, starting, buying, managing and selling dozens of companies across multiple industries throughout Oklahoma and the region. Working mostly with closely held companies, I've been able to help dreams come true, overcome obstacles and make meaningful improvements in the professional and personal lives of entrepreneurs of all types. Always having an eye on an opportunity to pursue my passion for manufacturing, the timing was right to jump in feet first and with a few trusted partners acquired a very successful regional precision CNC and Fabrication shop. Our mission at Hill is to Deliver Quality Parts. On Time. Every Time. It's a lofty but important goal that requires daily improvements in what we do and how we do it. Our clients expect it and when we execute it creates growth and opportunity for our employees and all stakeholders.  Helping others is probably my biggest energizer, which has led me into podcasting over the past few years. I hope you will listen to MakingChips and Buy the Numbers and see if you learn anything from my guests or I. I won't ever claim to be an expert on anything, but I have been fortunate to see and do a lot of things, winners and losers, so if my experience teaches you something I am happy.  I am humbled that I get to live my professional dream and I always enjoy the opportunity to help others do the same. No matter what was happening, she would always make you feel like the most important person in the room when you spoke. It was a gift. A blessing. When I went to college in Florida my mom got sick again and I had to race home to her bedside. I didn't know if I would make it but at the last moment, I did. Tears streamed down my face saying goodbye that day. A mark and impression left. Mom waited for me to be by her side before she passed. I didn't know it then, but I do now. (31:31)   Stephen's Bio: For nearly two decades, Stephen Woessner has been in the trenches consulting with hundreds of clients and teaching them how to leverage Web 2.0 tactics like search engine optimization (SEO) and social media to expand into new markets, introduce new products, decrease costs, and increase revenues. Woessner is a leading Web 2.0 authority, bestselling author, and instructor at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Small Business Development Center. Woessner is also a business owner and has made costly mistakes along the way. He built one of his previous companies up to a valuation of $10 million and was planning an initial public offering. However, he lost millions when the dot com bubble imploded. This expensive lesson taught Woessner the valuable principle of always measuring the return on investment (ROI) before any action is taken. These lessons formed the foundation of his latest company, Predictive ROI. The company is based on a trademarked Web 2.0 method developed by Woessner. Instead of focusing on increasing traffic to a company's website, Predictive ROI increases the right traffic...the traffic that provides the lowest bounce rate, the traffic that increases conversions...and Predictive ROI measures the increases in traffic and conversions before a single optimized content page is ever created. For example, the social networking aspect of Predictive ROI can increase website traffic by 23 percent and conversion rates by 780 percent. Woessner's practical and tactical training sessions and keynote presentations are exactly aligned with this ROI principle. Attendees have commented that the most valuable benefit is that his processes empower executives, business owners, and managers so they can implement the steps and action plan themselves without needing technical skills. Woessner has been quoted in Inc. Magazine, E-commerce Times, B-to-B Online Magazine, Counselor Magazine, The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Wisconsin Public Radio, and other media for his Web 2.0 insights. He frequently teaches training sessions throughout the University of Wisconsin system including the prestigious UW-Madison School of Business. Woessner is a bestselling author. His first book is entitled The Small Business Owner's Handbook to Search Engine Optimization. The book has been ranked as high as #3 on Amazon.com United States, #1 on Amazon.com United Kingdom, and #16 on Amazon.com France for its category. His second book is entitled Increase Online Sales through Viral Social Networking and was released in March. He is currently writing his third book. Woessner earned his MBA and Bachelor of Science in marketing from UW-La Crosse. Woessner is also a graduate of Black Hills State University and the Community College of the Air Force. Your best equipped to serve your former self with Meredith Arlinghaus

How heavily do you rely on the knowledge that God will provide? When you feel a nudge to go in an unexpected direction, how quickly are you to listen? Or even investigate that nudge? Meredith Arlinghaus talks about just that. There may be those moments when we think “No way! That cannot be what God is telling me to do.” But when we throw our reliance on Him, we end up right where we are supposed to be. Today's episode may help you to turn on your listening ears, and tune into what God is nudging you to do.    In this episode, you'll discover…  What is the key trait to winning at work and at home? (1:28) How to have clarity during life's seasons. (3:20) Are you listening? (16:15) Deleting Social Media. (18:25)   Meredith's Bio: She was working in a traditional accounting role and felt stifled and burnt out. She was missing out on the best years with her family. And she decided it was time for a change.  Meredith decided to take some time off to be a mom and started working part-time for a local non-profit that needed accounting support. In doing so, she realized that her skills were having a huge impact on the organization. Word spread about her skills and she began to scale a full-on outsourced bookkeeping, accounting and advisory business – all while spending more time with her family and achieving her financial goals. But it didn't stop there. Soon, Meredith was serving 25+ clients and didn't have capacity to take on more clients herself despite near-constant requests. These business owners had built great businesses, and Meredith wanted to help them experience the freedom to focus on what they do best. So she had an epiphany: What if she helped other talented accounting professionals break out from the traditional path and do exactly what she had done? And that's when Empower was born. Our mission is simple: Pair busy business owners with world-class accounting professionals so that both can experience the freedom to build a career and a life they love. Ambition, Lonliness, Fear, and Intentionality with Derek Mills, CEO of SquareCowMovers

You are not the sole provider of your family. God is. He has that weight and carries you through it. We control the input, God controls the impact. Today's guest Derek Mills reminds us that our responsibility lies in trusting God for the outcome of the hard work we put in. This isn't easy to do as life, stress, and family pressures may get in the way. This episode will be very encouraging for you if you can relate to these pressures.  In this episode, you'll discover…  What is the key trait to winning at work and at home? (2:08) Why Derek still has his coach. (10:04) What to do when you feel like everything is on YOU. (15:01) Deleting Social Media. (18:25)   Origin Story: If you asked the three Square Cow owners questions like, Why Texas? Why moving? Why 2008? The answer would likely be the same: family. The quest to start a Texas-based, family-owned moving company back in 2008 was simply a quest to bring their family together. That prevailing purpose allowed them to ignore the Texas heat, the seemingly impossible physical requirements of moving, and the worst recession since the Great Depression. In late 2007, their family was scattered and it seemed that everyone was in need of a career change. Wayne, the patriarch of the family, devised a plan. After learning his oldest daughter was moving to Austin, TX with her husband and small children, he persuaded his son, Wade, and son-in-law Derek to uproot their families and head west to the state where everything is bigger. Kicking the tires of several industries, ideas, and businesses lead them to a fateful meeting that forever changed their lives with the idea of starting their own moving company. With just 2 trucks, 3 family members, and a silly name, Square Cow Moovers was born. They launched March 1, 2008, to underwhelming results. However, as time passed, the gears of the small business began to grind, and little by little Square Cow grew. Instead of sudden “overnight success”, Square Cow grew by a multiple of one. Meaning, the goal became to move just one more sofa, then hire one more driver, then buy one more truck, and launch one more branch…and so on. That commitment to seeing something through was foundational, and would go on to yield well-deserved success. Today Square Cow spans 2 states with seven branches and hundreds of employees. The family grew, and our herd followed. What's Next?  Are you struggling to win at both home and work? Maybe you're crushing it at work, but home life is tough. How vulnerable are you with your kids? How do you encourage them when it comes to their future, goals, or head trash they may have? What are you doing that maybe you aren't showing them, that could help them become better adults? Today's guest Lantz Howard talks about his intentionality with what he shows his kids when it comes to helping others. Not only that, but how important it is to remember why we do the things we do and adjust as our means change. I pray this episode leaves you encouraged, and excited to share more with your kids.    In this episode, you'll discover…  What is your key trait to winning at work and at home? (2:02) What are some non-negotiables for his family? (3:57) How Lantz was intentional with his daughter, and why he recommends it. (7:20) Leaving the security of a paycheck, to become an entrepreneur. (12:00)   Lantz's Bio: I'm Lantz Howard. Disciple of Jesus, husband to Jessica, father of four amazing girls. I've been blessed in life with an amazing family and a career that I love, helping men like myself do the hard work and pursue personal wellness. As an executive coach, I can only be effective to the extent that I start with myself. I've been on a journey to maximize my own physical, emotional, and spiritual health since long before midlife. I remember moments driving my minivan with my beautiful wife sitting next to me and four little girls under the age of 6 in the back. Life was good, but also felt very full. I loved being in ministry, but I struggled with taking on too much and allowing the perspectives of others to cloud my inner compass. My body started sending me subtle signals that it wasn't dealing well with the stress: high blood pressure, heartburn, and a severe bout of shingles. I wasn't burning with purpose: I was burning out. “How the hell am I going to handle all this responsibility?” I wondered. Ironically, I was the one leading groups of men with the same struggles, and they were depending on me to help them find the answers. By leaning into the hard times and choosing to lead with courage, I was able to overcome Impostor Syndrome and craft the life I wanted: a strong body, a passionate marriage, a connected family, and a meaningful career path. Once I stopped letting stress, anxiety, and fear be my main motivators, I was able to experience a lifestyle fueled by joy, peace, and purpose. The best part of my job is that I get to connect with men like me, tenaciously searching for meaning in midlife. They watch those around them spend midlife coasting, relying on previous momentum, or making bad decisions because they sense a problem but don't know exactly what it is. My clients are unwilling to settle for anything less than functioning fully alive. They pursue physical health as a way to add vibrant decades to their lives, and emotional health as a means to build strong relationships and keep growing in meaningful ways. I guide people to maximum flourishing in all areas of life. Learn more on his website. Follow Lantz on LinkedIn What's Next?  Are you struggling to win at both home and work? The initial conversations were about how to create a faith-based business focused on giving back to the Church and community that would enable financial freedom for its customers and team members. Being active-duty military members at the time of The Kinetic Man Mastermind's inception, we wanted to focus on serving those who serve this country, hoping to provide a path to financial independence that would give military members options to continue serving or transition from their respective service, a choice based on desire rather than need. We have a passion for serving, giving, real estate investing, and enjoy the benefits of owning income-producing real estate. Today's guest Nick Dadas brought up the fact that despite him being a father himself, he still wants to ask his dad on his thoughts when he is about to make a big decision. His reason? Because he knows that his dad has been through life, and has made a lot of the decisions that he is debating on making. If your parents are still around, consider asking for their opinion. This was just one of the points I enjoyed from today's episode.    In this episode, you'll discover…    What is the key trait to winning at work and at home? (1:57) How does Nick fight the drift? (2:49) How Nick stays focused with multiple companies. (13:50) Avoiding “more more more.” (19:26)   Nick's Bio: Like all parents, as our children approached school age we started thinking about education. We wondered if a traditional school would continue to nurture their passion, curiosity, and love of learning. Will it help them become confident, independent, gritty, and self-aware? Will school prepare them for a fulfilled, successful life in the 21st century?    When we learned about Acton Academy, we thought ‘if that existed in Cleveland, we would definitely send our children there!' We were intrigued by the idea of the Hero's Journey, of learners with freedom to own their own experience,  and of a tight-knit community of learners holding each other accountable. The standards of excellence are high, and success is not about completing worksheets or memorizing facts for a test. The goal is bold yet simple: every child will find their God-given calling to change the world.    After over a year of prayer and discussion, we decided to use our entrepreneurial, business background to follow a calling to bring the Acton model to Cleveland. We wanted this for our children and for other families that desire a new, innovative approach to education!   Please contact us at hello@actonlakeside.com if you want to learn more about starting your own Hero's Journey with Acton Academy Lakeside.  What's Next?    Are you struggling to win at both home and work?
