Matt Bellamy, nacido en 1978 es hijo del guitarrista de una banda de surf instrumental de los años 60 llamada los Tornados, el primer grupo inglés en tener un número 1 en EEUU, en verano de 1962. Cuando sus padres se divorciaron él tenía apenas 14 años, y se iría a vivir con su abuela. De pequeño, con 7 años, ya había empezado a practicar y aprender a tocar el piano, pero poco después se decantaría por la guitarra eléctrica. Ahí, de niño, también empezaría a jugar con amigos con tablas ouija intentando contactar con el más allá, y posiblemente de ahí le viniera esa devoción por la astronomía, el espacio y la vida más allá de los confines de la Tierra. Todo eso le iría formando en cuanto a las alusiones en sus letras, pero musicalmente Nirvana, Queen, Rage Against The Machine, Radiohead y Jeff Buckley podrían ser algunas de sus primeras inspiraciones. Muse se conocerían en la pequeña ciudad de Teignmouth, al suroeste de Inglaterra cuando los tres tenían 14-15 años y sus respectivos grupos se estaban separando. Contarían Muse que mientras el resto de chavales de su edad se iban de fiesta, a ellos les gustaba ensayar y tocar, y pronto tuvieron claro que querían crear sus propias canciones. Agitated sería una de sus primeras canciones, y sería grabada en Noviembre de 1996 en unos estudios de grabación, dentro de las maquetas conocidas como Newton Abbot. Con apenas 16 años, la primera encarnación del grupo se llamaría Rocket Baby Dolls, y su primera gran actuación llegaría en una especie de batalla de bandas donde parece ser que el único grupo de rock serían ellos. Tal vez el impacto que causaron, rompiendo sus instrumentos al final de la actuación, estilo Nirvana, sería uno de los factores que les inclinaría la balanza y terminaron ganando. Según contarían, ahí se dieron cuenta que la emoción no estaba reñida con la calidad técnica, y descubrirían que sus habilidades podían tener metas mayores. En enero de 1997 volverían a grabar algunas canciones propias, y muchas de ellas terminarían formando parte de su primer álbum. Renombrarían a su banda Muse y continuaron tomándoselo muy en serio. En 1997, Dennis Smith, propietario de Sawmills Studios, un estudio de grabación en Inglaterra, los descubrió tocando en un pueblo y quedó bastante sorprendido de la habilidad del grupo y de su enorme creatividad. Tras ese descubrimiento, les ofrecería grabar algunos temas gratuitamente en sus estudios Terminarían firmando con Dangerous y luego con Taste Media, un pequeño sello discográfico independiente, creado fundamentalmente para la publicación de sus primeros álbumes. Y, tras unos cuantos conciertos, en los que Muse llegarían a telonear a Skunk Anansie, despertaron el interés en Madonna y su sello Maverick Records con quienes firmarían en la víspera de navidad de 1998 para su distribución en Estados Unidos. Ese año, 1997 grabarían su primer EP con apenas 4 canciones en ese pequeño sello, Dangerous, y donde ya dejaban claro cuales eran sus principales referencias. El EP fue grabado dos días después de que Dennis Smith, en los Sawmills Studios ofreciera a Muse tiempo libre en el estudio. Se lanzaron 999 copias del EP, cada una con una pegatina numerada a mano, y escrita personalmente por Matt Bellamy.
