What France can learn from Italy's fight against the mafia as it tackles its growing problem with drug-related organised crime. A look at France's new military service. And wrapping Paris's oldest bridge, 40 years after it was transformed by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The recent murder in Marseille of 20-year-old Mehdi Kessaci, the younger brother of a well-known anti-drugs campaigner, has highlighted the growing problem of drug-related organised crime in France. The government has promised tougher repressive measures, but what if civil society also had a role to play? Inspired by the example of Italy, the Crim'HALT association campaigns for the official recognition of victims of organised crime. Its co-founder, Fabrice Rizzoli, talks about taking ordinary citizens to see firsthand how Italian anti-mafia initiatives work. Jean-Toussaint Plasenzotti, who founded the anti-mafia collective Massimu Susini following the murder of his nephew in 2019 in Corsica, and Hassna Arabi, whose relative Socayna was killed by a stray bullet in 2023, explain how travelling to Italy with Crim-HALT has helped their work back home. (Listen @0') As Europe looks to increase its defence capacity in the face of war in Ukraine and threats from Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a special military service aimed at recruiting a new generation of soldiers. Unlike the mandatory military service that was suspended in 1997, the new format would be voluntary – and paid. Historian and army reservist Guillaume Lasconjarias says that in providing a way for young people to be of service, the scheme responds to something they want. (Listen @17'30'') Forty years after Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped Paris's Pont Neuf in September 1985, opening the door to monumental public art displays, the city has approved a new project on the bridge by artist JR. For years now, Dutch authorities have been regularly dismantling illegal drug labs producing amphetamines, ecstasy and cocaine – often hidden away in remote, rural areas. But one of the lesser-known consequences of this illegal industry is the severe environmental pollution it leaves behind. Barrels filled with hazardous substances are frequently dumped in forests, fields and even protected nature reserves. Last year alone, 217 illegal dumping sites were discovered across the country. FRANCE 24's Ingrid Gercama and Alix Le Bourdon report.

My Spouse Is Not A Drug Dealer. He Has A Regular Job. How Can They Charge Him With This? Dallas Drug Crime Defense Attorney, John Helms Answers. It is important to understand that when a person is arrested for possession with intent to distribute drugs or conspiracy to distribute drugs, this does not necessarily mean that the government thinks the person's entire life is being a drug dealer. A person can be charged with a federal drug crime even if they have only been involved in one or two drug deals or if all they have done is carry drugs from one person to another. In other words, people who are not full-time drug dealers can be charged with federal drug crimes. This is because it is illegal to make only one drug deal or to carry drugs for someone even one time. To many people, this does not seem fair. Why can someone who has had little involvement with drug dealing be charged with the same crime as a drug kingpin? The answer is that the crime is the same, but the punishment will be different. The first question, of course, is whether the government can really prove that the accused is guilty of the crime beyond a reasonable doubt. To answer that, I have to study and evaluate the facts and the government's evidence. Discuss this topic here. Continue reading here.

A key talking point of Gov. Tony Evers' “first step” proposal to legalize medical and recreational marijuana went up in smoke last week. In rolling out his wide-ranging initiative, the governor and fellow Democrats declared “drug-related offenses make up as much as 75-85% of inmate populations.” The claim is patently false - the real stat is 11%. And as MacIver News first reported, the Evers administration quietly scrubbed the bad stat from the original press release.

Jim and Dan sit down with colleague Bob Young to talk about how a Trump administration may deal with legal pot. There are lots of fears about Attorney General pick Jeff Sessions, but Bob notes Trump has said marijuana should be left up to the states - and he doesn't think Trump gains anything by picking a fight on this. Then, the ACLU's Alison Holcomb - author of Washington's legal marijuana law - talks about a related cause: ending mass incarceration due to drug crimes. She helped lead a campaign in Oklahoma where voters just made simple possession of any drug a misdemeanor instead of a felony. Washington state may follow suit. Bonus content: Bob Young riffs on the new strain of Hunter S. Thompson branded weed. And why Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers is this week's political winner, while Seattle voters lose.
