The Romanian presidential election run-off has pitted a hard-right, nationalist candidate - a self-declared fan of Donald Trump and critic of the European Union - against an avowedly PRO-EU, liberal candidate. Despite exit polls projecting a win for pro-EU Nicusor Dan, once polls closed, his opponent George Simeon claimed victory. We speak to a backer of Nicusor. Also on the programme: Former UN official Martin Griffiths shares his thoughts on the humanitarian situation in Gaza following recent Israeli offensives; and a look at the London musical that pays homage to rock n' roll star Sister Rosetta Tharpe.(Photo: Bucharest mayor and independent presidential candidate delivers speech after first exit poll results are announced in Romania, 18th May 2025. Pat Leahy joins Hugh Linehan to share the results of The Irish Times exit poll for the 2024 general election. The three largest parties of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Sinn Féin are on course for a tight finish in their share of the vote in general election 2024, according to the results of an exit poll tonight. The results of the poll, conducted by Ipsos B&A today for The Irish Times/RTÉ/TG4/TCD, and released just after polls closed, are as follows: Sinn Féin 21.1 per cent, Fianna Fáil 19.5 per cent, Fine Gael 21 per cent, the Green Party 4 per cent, Labour 5 per cent, the Social Democrats 5.8 per cent, Solidarity-People Before Profit 3.1 per cent, Aontú 3.6 per cent, Independents/others 14.6 per cent and Independent Ireland 2.2 per cent.If the findings of the exit poll are borne out when the votes are counted tomorrow, it suggests that a return of a coalition based around Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael is likely. If the results of the counts taking place around the country tomorrow bear out the exit poll findings, it will be the second time in a row that Sinn Fein has won the largest share of the vote – but is left without an obvious path to government. In the aftermath of the 2024 election, Democrats are confronting a possible existential threat: The erosion of support among important demographic groups, particularly Latinos. An example close to home helps illustrate the shift: In the 14th Legislative District, in the Yakima Valley, a newly redrawn map was supposed to strengthen Latino representation in the state House and Senate. Republicans even challenged the map in court, alleging it was built to win seats for Democrats. But as the dust settles, Republicans are poised to sweep the 14th District, new map and all. This week, Erin and Alyssa assembled a super-panel with award-winning journalist Errin Haines, activist and author Julissa Arce, and comedian Megan Gailey. They chat about how things are settling post-election, from what it would really take for a woman to become president to the misguided logic of people who split their vote on abortion. Then, they sound off on a listener's question about whether to unfriend Trump supporters. For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here. It took major news outlets just minutes to begin pushing claims about how various demographic groups voted in the election. They created a mess of conflicting reports, any of which could easily turn out to be false. Today, Josh digs into this problem. He explores very different claims about how Black Americans voted, and explains how news agencies are even ignoring their own warnings. Also, why a myth about white women in the 2016 presidential election should have been a wakeup call. Plus, Josh discusses the disastrous coverage of a violent antisemitic pogrom in Amsterdam. He explains that one media rule is at the core of both these failures. And he invites you to send in election-related news stories for next week's episode.

The best way to understand what happened on Tuesday is to listen to what the actual voters have been saying. Dan checks back in with two strategists who run focus groups with key parts of the electorate: Sarah Longwell of The Bulwark, who's been talking to Trump-curious swing voters for months, and Carlos Odio of Equis Research, an expert on the Latino vote. Sarah and Carlos discuss some of the warning signs that were blinking red long before last week, and how we can recognize them—and act on them—in the future.
There's good reason to believe they're the most accurate polls that are conducted during any election cycle.
The U.S. Presidential election ends, and all sorts of new questions arise. Ours? Just how influential is PolyMarket, the crypto-based app that brought election betting to the general public? Max and Colborn talk PolyMarket's origins, its seed investments, its political inclinations, and most importantly, its effect (if any) on the elections it revolves around. What does PolyMarket's rise tell us about the electorate? Can betting on election be ethical? This, social media's forcible politicization, the future for crypto in a second Trump term, and much more.
