Exit polls suggest pro-EU candidate will win Romanian election

The Romanian presidential election run-off has pitted a hard-right, nationalist candidate - a self-declared fan of Donald Trump and critic of the European Union - against an avowedly PRO-EU, liberal candidate. Despite exit polls projecting a win for pro-EU Nicusor Dan, once polls closed, his opponent George Simeon claimed victory. We speak to a backer of Nicusor. Also on the programme: Former UN official Martin Griffiths shares his thoughts on the humanitarian situation in Gaza following recent Israeli offensives; and a look at the London musical that pays homage to rock n' roll star Sister Rosetta Tharpe.(Photo: Bucharest mayor and independent presidential candidate delivers speech after first exit poll results are announced in Romania, 18th May 2025.

Romania has never been pro-Russian and politicians backed by Russia rarely present themselves as such, Romanian centre-right MEP Siegfried Muresan told Radio Schuman in today's episode.Muresan said this applied to Calin Georgescu, the little-known far-right populist and TikTok personality who unexpectedly won the first round of Romania's presidential election, adding that he had put forth an ''anti-European stance, seeking to undermine Europe, its values, and the rule of law."Georgescu was projected to secure less than 10% of the vote. He will now face liberal candidate Elena Lasconi in a December 8 run-off—unless Romania's criminal court intervenes to annul the second round of elections. This election outcome highlights a broader regional trend, with Romania potentially joining countries like Georgia and Moldova in pivotal political battles between democratic, pro-Western values and nationalist, pro-Moscow forces. The stakes are particularly high for Romania, an EU member that shares a border with Ukraine and serves as a key NATO military base.Questions remain about Georgescu's unexpected success, Romania's ties to Russia, and how pro-EU forces in Bucharest and Brussels plan to counter his rise if the runoff proceeds. In the second segment of this program, we take a brief look at the latest polls for today's Irish election.Radio Schuman also explores the underlying causes of mental health conditions among workers in certain European countries.Radio Schuman is hosted and produced by Maïa de la Baume, with journalist and production assistant Eleonora Vasques, audio editing by Zacharia Vigneron, Georgios Leivaditis and Brodheim, David. Zatkla by česká policie Benjamina Netanjahua během státní návštěvy? A na závěr došlo i na motýly Davida Černého na obchodním domě Máj. Celý podcast sledujte na http://www.Echoprime.cz

It's the second coming of Donald Tusk, with implications well beyond Poland's borders. Two months after a general election win marked by huge turnout comes a comeback for the centre-right leader. Tusk's first stint as prime minister was followed up by a move to Brussels where as president of the European Council, he found himself clashing with the leadership of his own country.  Now, after eight years of the right-wing nationalist Law and Justice Party, we ask how different Tusk II will be from Tusk I.With a sitting president who wields veto powers, with PiS appointments in the courts and at the central bank, will it be change or political gridlock?Speaking of gridlock, the vote in Poland's parliament coincides with the lifting of the month-long border blockade of Ukraine's biggest road crossing by Polish truckers and farmers. Will the change of leadership in Warsaw quell wavering support for Kyiv's war effort and the EU entry permit exemptions that go with it?More broadly, which way for a one-time Soviet bloc nation whose economy has soared since joining the EU in 2004, but whose mostly Catholic electorate remains bitterly divided over culture wars? Was the tightening of one of the EU's strictest abortion laws the issue that swung the pendulum away from conservatives? Produced by Charles Wente, Louise Guibert and Lila Paulou.

This piece originally appeared as a sound installation at the Dar A Ouvir festival in Coimbra, Portugal in July 2022. The voice of the world - as heard by Cities and Memory Whether we're protesting or worshipping, joyful or angry, sound is at the very core of human existence - we can hear before we're born, and sound is perhaps the closest and most evocative sense we have.  Field recording captures the voice of the world in all of its glorious forms, and in this collection we listen to a series of recordings captured by Cities and Memory founder Stuart Fowkes in various countries around the world, and placed in dialogue with one another. Recordings complement and oppose one another as we are transported from place to place. An anti-terrorism protest in Germany is transformed into a crowd celebrating wildly at a football match. A pagan ritual in a field in England bleeds into a Muslim call to prayer in Saudi Arabia. A pro-Ukraine, anti-war demonstration sits in opposition to a plaintive song by a Russian folk singer. We hear traditional music from performing street troupes, klezmer bands, flamenco dancers and beatboxers, expressing community, hope and sadness in unique and profound ways. This truly is the voice of the world. List of sounds: 1. Pagan ritual at the sacred Rollright Stones, England 2. Maghreb call to prayer in Deera Square, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 3. Traditional performing street drum troupe, Santiago, Chile 4. Michael Jackson beatboxer, Piccadilly Circus, London, England 5. Festival show introduction, Oxfordshire, England 6. It was a French election, to elect a French president. But Emmanuel Macron took to the stage below the quintessentially French Eiffel Tower on April 24 for his victory speech to the sound of the European anthem, Beethoven's "Ode to Joy". He told his supporters that their fellow electors had chosen "a more independent France and a stronger Europe". Many of them waved EU flags, as well as the French tricolore. So what does the re-election of "Monsieur Europe" mean for the Union and France's place in it? We speak to MEPs from the two European political groups represented by Emmanuel Macron and his rival Marine Le Pen.

Two months of protests in Bulgaria. Pro-EU Borisov corruption angers citizens. The Duran: Episode 664. Via Visegrad Insight (https://visegradinsight.eu/bulgaria-menace-protesters/)... On 2 September Bulgarians took again to the streets in a culminating moment of the last two months. Violent clashes between football hooligans and the police obscure an aggravated tension in the country between citizens and a corrupt political class . While the parliament was resuming after summer break, protesters called for a Grand National Uprisal aiming not only to regain post-vacation momentum, but also forcing Borisov to resign. As it turns out, the Prime Minister once more outsmarted the people. Officials signaled that the GERB ruling party would withdraw from the government and most of the political parties were sceptical about the idea for a new constitution put forward by Boris Borisov. Although the protests commenced early in the morning and the number of protesters was impressive, by the afternoon Borisov gained the upper hand, when it became apparent that his project for a new constitution received the necessary 120 votes and can be proceeded in the Bulgarian parliament. Bulgarian constitution can be changed only by a Grand National Assembly, the convention of which requires the support of at least 160 of the 240 MPs. Although Borisov knows that his initiative will not have that majority, the processing of the new constitutional project will secure his power by the end of his term in March 2021. *** The Patriot Beacon #1 Tactical Flashlight on the Market Link: https://www.patrioticlegacy.com/product/patriot-flashlight/ Coupon code: Duran20

The fake tweets offered to send $2,000 for every $1,000 sent to an anonymous Bitcoin address. Twitter responded by disabling the ability to tweet from validated and verified accounts for about two hours while working on fixing the issue. *) Pompeo downplays possibility of summit with North Korea US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has downplayed the possibility of another summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Pompeo said Trump will only engage if there are real prospects of progress. Repeated statements from Pyongyang have said Trump will no longer get high-profile meetings that he could pass off as foreign policy achievements. *) Brazil's Bolsonaro tests positive for coronavirus, again Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro has announced he still has the coronavirus after undergoing a new test the day before. Bolsonaro said he is not experiencing symptoms and that his use of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine was working. The far-right president, whose anti-mask and anti-lockdown statements have caused much of the public to ignore coronavirus measures, first tested positive a week ago. Pro-EU party claims win in North Macedonia polls North Macedonia's pro-EU Social Democrats have declared victory after official election results showed a razor-thin win over nationalist rivals. Wednesday’s vote was the first parliamentary election since the Social Democrats added "North" to the Balkan country's name last year. Lacking an outright majority with only some 35.8 percent of the vote, the Social Democrats face tough coalition talks to form a government. And finally *) Banksy coronavirus graffiti removed from London tube The London Underground has removed British street artist Banksy's latest work on coronavirus. Banksy posted a video on social media in which he was seen in a boiler suit spray-painting stencils of his iconic rats inside a train, with one sneezing blue droplets. Transport for London said the work was removed due to the company's strict anti-graffiti policy but appreciated the spirit of Banksy’s message.

In Brussels and London, one question is growing louder: Can Boris Johnson be stopped?Britain's prime minister says the U.K. is leaving the European Union in less than 90 days, either with a divorce deal, or — it seems increasingly likely — without one. With Britain and the bloc each accusing the other of torpedoing an agreement, pro-EU British lawmakers are gearing up for a last-ditch effort to prevent a no-deal Brexit. But it's not clear whether Parliament can halt a prime minister who insists the U.K. will leave on Oct. 31 "come what may.""In theory it can," British constitutional expert Vernon Bogdanor told the BBC. "In practice it is very, very difficult."By law, Britain will leave the EU on Oct. 31 when the official countdown period set by EU treaty expires. The original deadline of March 29 was extended twice as British politicians wrangled over departure terms and repeatedly rejected then-Prime Minister Theresa May's divorce deal with the bloc.Johnson says he will "strain every sinew" to get a new and improved deal. But he has held no talks with EU leaders, and has made demands the bloc is almost certain to reject. Britain insists the EU must reopen the withdrawal agreement and remove an Irish border provision that is opposed by Brexit-backing British lawmakers. The EU says it will not renegotiate the deal. The two sides are accusing each other of torpedoing talks. Michael Gove, the British minister in charge of no-deal preparations, said Tuesday he was "deeply saddened" that the EU was "refusing to negotiate with the U.K." But EU Commission spokeswoman Annika Breidthardt said the bloc's door was open "should the United Kingdom wish to hold talks and clarify its position in more detail."As tensions rise, Johnson has ordered British officials to "turbo-charge" preparations for a no-deal exit, setting aside more than 2 billion pounds ($2.4 billion) to hire border officials, stockpile medicines and prepare for backlogs of trucks around the major Channel port of Dover. Many economists say a no-deal Brexit will trigger a recession and cause economic mayhem, with shortages of fresh food and other goods likely as customs checks snarl Britain's ports.Pro-EU members of Parliament are vowing to put up a fight once Parliament returns from its summer break on Sept. 3. They have two possible strategies: pass a law ruling out a no-deal Brexit, or topple the government and replace it with a new one that will abandon Johnson's intransigent approach."The odds of an election are rising as backbench MPs contemplate ways in which they can frustrate Johnson's plans," said Mujtaba Rahman, managing director for Europe at political risk consultancy Eurasia Group. "We're moving to a situation where there is unlikely to be much progress in August. September and October are going to be frantic. And that's an understatement."Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said Monday that he would call a no-confidence vote in the government once Parliament returns, to "make sure this government is not allowed to take this country out of the union (EU) with no deal."A no-confidence vote has a good chance of success, since Johnson's Conservatives have a working majority of just one vote, and some Conservative lawmakers are deeply opposed to a no-deal Brexit. If the government lost, it would have 14 days to overturn the result by winning a new vote. If it could not, an election would be held. But the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act — an election-regulating law introduced in 2011 — leaves questions about what happens during that crucial 14 days. The opposition says Johnson would have to resign, and see if anyone else could form a government. Opponents of Brexit believe they could cobble together a national unity administration whose only purpose would be to ask the EU to delay Brexit while an election or a new referendum, or both, was held. But Johnson's allies say he could hang on for the two weeks, running down the clock, and then call an...

Brexit and PoliticiansI am a Remainer. My main reason for not wanting Brexit is that I don't trust our politicians. I don't trust any politicians, not only British ones, but it seems to me that we have more chance of justice, if we have a couple of layers of them. Yes, that is more expensive, but at least we ordinary folk might get a fairer crack of the whip.Just look at the things our British politicians have been caught doing over the last decade, and they have been getting away with it forever! I should imagine that the continental politicians are corrupt too - I can't see why they shouldn't be, but then the whole shebang should be reformed. Calling Brexit and retreating into our caves won't help.Anyway, another reason for being anti-Brexit crossed my mind the other day. I have always popped over to the Continent for a few days on the spur of the moment every now and then, time and money permitting. This will no longer be possible, will it, if we will require visas to go over there?I used to fly to Cork - thirty minutes away, but that might not be possible either, because they will be EU and we will be... what? British? Just British... stuck on our own little island with almost all our boats and bridges burned, unless we plan our once-a-year fortnight's holiday abroad. How pathetic, how limiting, is that? Everyone else in Europe can just get on a plane or a ferry, and Brits have to queue for a visa!No wonder rich people are buying EU citizenship in Malta so they don't get left behind the rest of the world like we will be!Brexit is a step back into the Dark Ages... voted for in haste and fuelled by liars who only want more power as British politicians - but you can bet your life that they will still have the right to spur-of-the-moment travel - it's always the bloody same:One rule for them and another for the rest of us!Vote for a second referendum! How can it be undemocratic to ask a more informed people what they want? It is the only way that we will move forward.Use #FBPE (Follow Back, Pro EU) in your social media messages to show you support remain or a second referendum! Please LIKE and SHARE this article using the buttons below and visit our bookshopAll the best,OwenPodcast: Brexit and Politicianshttp://smarturl.it/Brexit-mps?IQid=spreaker

Divided between three lists is probably going to favour Macron by diluting the support (https://www.euractiv.com/section/eu-elections-2019/news/increasing-number-of-yellow-vest-lists-for-european-elections/) France pulls its ambassador to Italy Apparently when you say things like "never stopped colonising" and go meet with the president's new political enemies he gets all mad ( https://www.dw.com/en/france-recalls-ambassador-to-italy-after-di-maio-meets-yellow-vest-protesters/a-47407164) Protests in Spain for not that corruption scandal Tens of thousands gathered in Madrid on Sunday to protest Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's plan to ease tensions with Catalan separatists, in a demonstration uniting the leaders of conservative and far-right parties. The protest of an estimated 45,000 people marked the first time that the leaders of the conservative Popular Party (PP), centrist Ciudadanos and far-right Vox were photographed together, El País reported. Protesters accused Sánchez of "stabbing [Spain] in the back" and called for a snap election because of his government's decision to accept a long-held demand of Catalan secessionists to appoint a facilitator in talks between pro-independence and pro-unity political parties. https://www.politico.eu/article/spains-right-wing-parties-protest-government-talks-with-catalan-nationalists-pedro-sanchez/ Ciarán Spent too much time reading about the Orthodox Church Ukraine is getting it's own Church but it's mostly political bullshit that's horrifyingly Byzantine for 2019. http://neweasterneurope.eu/2018/04/26/house-divided-orthodoxy-post-maidan-ukraine/ Topic 1 Poland... The murder of the Mayor of Gdansk Pawel Adamowicz and the formation of Wiosna (Spring) draw eyes to what the hell is going on in Polish politics. Wiosna In the UK the Daily Telegraph lead with the headline "Gay atheist politician launches movement to take on Poland's conservatives"... So you can imagine what the Polish establishment and it's old establishment think of them. Robert Biedron the mayor of Slupsk founded a new party (with mixed SEO https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring(politicalparty)) wish for Poland extremely center left views. Women's rights. Pro EU sentiment. Minimum wage increases. Delightful, but sitting somewhere in the low double digits - high single digits, might sort of unify what exists of the Polish left, but not pose a major threat. Possibly even divide up the anti PiS vote (https://foreignpolicy.com/2019/02/08/the-future-of-politics-is-coming-to-poland/) Everyone's talking about Tusk Donald gets a lot of air time with his "special place in hell" brexit nonsense and what not, but he's also possibly coming back to Poland (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-02-08/eu-s-tusk-plans-polish-comeback-for-2019-elections-paper-says). Those are only rumors but it seems risky based on the current polls, which have PiS in a relatively similar position to what they got last time (~37%) A Right Wing Duopoly The PiS get all the press but the main opposition party Civic Platform is really a conservative/christian democratic party (of which Tusk is a member). Between them they have 361 out of 460 seats in their parliament. The 3rd largest grouping is Kukiz'15 which only has 26 seats and is a far right "movement"... There is no established party to the left of Civic Platform with any real political control. Youth to the Right Research and political commentary has generally been showing that young Poles are pretty amenable to right wing policies anyway (https://www.dw.com/en/polands-young-voters-turning-to-the-right/a-47439606) Marta Majchrzak, who co-authored a study published in November by the commercial research institute IQS in which scientists interviewed childless Poles between the ages of 16 and 29. "They trust authorities, are dreaming of marriage, and are proud to be Polish citizens," Free market capitalism and libertarian views are more popular with the youth (http://politicalcritique.org/cee/poland/2018/why-the-polish-left-is-losing/) especially in the ages where we in the west have a stereotype of those being left wing years (i.e. those damn college communists). So maybe Tusk's guys are the less of two evils. Remember the PiS is steamrolling the courts in probably non-constitutional ways (https://dziennikpolski24.pl/dziekani-prawa-krytykuja-reforme-sadownictwa-wedlug-pis-wyrazamy-dezaprobate-dla-dzialan-wladz-panstwowych/ar/13505207)... and reducing abortion rights. Even Adamowicz wasn't exactly left wing or that liberal. He would be relatively to the right in most European countries (http://politicalcritique.org/cee/poland/2019/pawel-adamowicz-a-very-political-death-in-a-country-torn-by-culture-wars/) Class Struggle Isn't the Debate Poland, being previously part of the Soviet Union doesn't have the class imbalance issues in the same way as say the UK or US (http://politicalcritique.org/cee/poland/2018/why-the-polish-left-is-losing/). There isn't an entrenched aristocracy or an economy to the scale where arguing about how to cut the pie is the argument people in Poland are on board with. People want economic growth and parties like Razem talking about wealth inequality doesn't gain much traction. Most of the wealthy in Poland aren't actually in Poland to get taxed, they're foreign investors. Discussions of raising taxes are largely a no go

Roger Bolton hears from listeners concerned by coverage of anti-Brexit marches, Garry Richardson defends a controversial interview with Kim Hughes and Lynn Bowles says farewell. The weekend saw the March For Our Lives in Washington DC and a series of anti-Brexit marches across the UK, but BBC news executives only covered the first of these. Pro-EU listeners were incensed. UK News Editor Richard Burgess joins Roger Bolton to defend the BBC's decision and discuss what makes a demonstration newsworthy. Radio 2 listeners were practically inconsolable when beloved traffic reporter Lynn Bowles announced her departure from the network, with her final broadcast coming on Thursday. Lynn sits down with Roger to explain why she's leaving, look back on a career sat next to Terry Wogan, Ken Bruce and Chris Evans, and discuss her plans for the future. A ball tampering scandal has rocked the world of cricket, but Sportsweek presenter Garry Richardson made his own waves when he clashed with former Australian captain Kim Hughes while discussing the story on BBC Radio 5Live. After the presenter tried to hurry the interview to a close, Kim Hughes took offence and promptly hung up the phone. Garry Richardson then implied to a later guest that Hughes had been "boorish" - but, for some listeners, Garry was the one at fault for a regrettable incident. He talks to Roger about what happened. And the BBC released its annual plan this week, laying out schemes to combat fake news and appeal to younger audiences. Next week on Feedback, BBC Director of Radio and Music Bob Shennan joins the programme to chew over the BBC's long term plan for radio. Roger appeals to listeners for their questions. Producer: Will Yates A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.

Brexit is one of the most divisive political situations the country has ever faced. Emotions have overruled rational thinking on both sides since before the vote, and we have failed to get them in check in the 18-months since. With a year to go before the UK leaves the EU, people are starting to ask 'Is it Worth Is?' Now we are presented with the real cost of Brexit, should we not get a say on whether we will support our departure from the union? That is what these marchers on the Ipswich Waterfront are demanding - a say on the final Brexit deal.

Still bitter from the marginal vote to leave the EU some who voted to 'remain' appear to be seeking to put as many roadblocks in the way as possible. In this week's Bible in the News we consider the likelihood of Brexit being scuppered in the light of Bible prophecy.
