Whether you're looking to sell at local markets, supply florists, or offer DIY wedding buckets, I'll guide you through the first steps. I'll cover how to start small, grow sustainably, and set the foundations for a profitable venture.Key TakeawaysStart Small: When I started, it was just three raised beds. Even a small garden or a 1-square-meter plot can yield significant results with planning.Plan Your Flowers: Choose customer favorites like sweet peas, dahlias, and cosmos. Think about who you want to sell to—florists, markets, or DIY brides—and tailor your choices.Sustainability Matters: Growing your own flowers reduces reliance on imports and eliminates the need for harmful pesticides. It's a great way to protect our environment.Profitability: With the right approach, even a small plot can be lucrative. For example, by rotating tulips and dahlias in the same space, you can double your yield.Community Support: Join my Cut Flower Kickoff 2025 Facebook Group, where you'll find free guides, live Q&As, and plenty of support from fellow growers.Steps You Can Take Right NowStart prepping your soil with compost or manure.Browse seed catalogs and choose flowers you love.Plan for successional planting to maximize your blooms.Begin sowing hardy annuals in March or later in the season, depending on your setup.Brush up on basic floristry skills to create beautiful bouquets.Join Me in the Facebook GroupIf you're excited to grow your own cut flowers, join our Cut Flower Kickoff 2025 Facebook Group. Something admired has been out in the world for roughly 3 months and I can't be more proud and excited about what has transpired. I always feel the need and desire to honour something once it has been brought to life and in the different stages, something evolves. I used to always throw birthdays for passion projects or milestones and today is one of them. I would love to share a recap on how these past 3 months have been for me personally and what has been evolving behind the scenes here at Something Admired… Firstly, I landed back in the states after almost 2.5 years of being in Australia and was unable to come to visit my family or friends. It's been almost 2 months here and it's been so special to reconnect with everyone I love and cherish so deeply as well as bask in the presence of the mountains, ocean, and rivers! I come back and a majority of my close friends have had babies and almost everyone I am surrounded by here is a flower farmer that is the ultimate gift to witness and partake in the picking. Over the past few months, we have been…Farm sitting (Sweet mountain top / Palomar Farm) The farmer's market weekly haul Working freelance for a handful of brands in the realm of art direction, social media, photography, modelling, and copywritingRekindled with family I haven't seen since childhoodLots of dinners and long coffee dates And in honour of Something Admired the past 3 months have been a melting pot of lots of learning, curiosity, and sitting with a constant stream of questions… So what has transpired is… 16 podcast recordings (1+ weekly) every Friday 2,700 downloads With the most loved episode being ‘Cultivating Creativity and Building a Business You Love with Annie Tarasova” and the second most listened too ‘The Future of Sustainable Gardening with Charles DowdingWhat has worked… Recording bulk content to roll out a few months in advance Investing in a good microphone (I bought the yeti blue off of amazon) Keeping organised with each recording, filing them and recording each intro right after the recording so it's still fresh. Schedule interviews when you are ovulating LOLOrganic conversation, yes have some planned questions but also allow the conversation to unfold by their responses. Actively listen and ask questions from there. Mistakes or things I would have done differently…Create an organised calendar to send to each person so they can pick a slot time that is available rather than lots of back and forth Hone in on specific people or focuses I am aiming for rather than asking anyone and everyone for an interview Allocate time in my week each week to record, edit, and schedule each podcast so it feels less all over the placeVideo, share more video and in-person interviews!

Hello and welcome back to the Mic the Gardener Gardening Podcast. In this week's episode I chat to garden & landscape designer and author, Jack Wallington about his new book 'A Greener Life: Discover the Joy of Mindful & Sustainable Gardening'. This book is a must have if you wish to pursue and learn more about sustainable garden practices and to work alongside nature in your own green space. Jack tells us about how this, his third book, came about including how and where he writes and much more. He also tells us why it's the most important and personal thing he's ever done. I talk to Jack about how he got into writing, how you write your first ever book and the book writing process. Jack, his partner and Rumbles the cat have also moved from London to Yorkshire, and we chat about his new garden and how the pressures of working and living in London led to changes in Jack's outlook on life. As an experienced and successful landscape and garden designer, I ask Jack if the process of designing your own garden is different from designing a clients. We also look at his aspirations to build a Chelsea Flower Show garden. The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns over the past two years turned many of us into avid gardeners. An unwitting consequence was also a rise in the use of plastic poly bags to grow plants in, and thus, more plastic waste after the poly bags are done with. Horrified by the thought of this, Dr Jarina Mohd Jani, a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Science and Marine Environment at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), has embarked on a project to teach people how to weave their own poly bags using leaves. But is the horticultural industry really buying into this new trend? Garden Centres seem to be filled more and more with plants that are forced into flower, they are stacked to the rafters with massed displays of bedding plants or row upon row of hanging basket.they seem to have become more like supermarkets - so is the horticulture industry good for the planet? We need our gardens to be part of the outside world not separate from the outside world.
