A decade ago, if a beer spent a few months in a single bourbon barrel, its release would cause fanfare amongst craft beer obsessives. These days, beers are blended from an increasing number of different barrels for extended periods of time, so we decided to sample beers that represent an increasing number of different barrels to see if more barrels actually means better results. To help us better understand the barrel side of the beer world, we talk to Ethan Schulenberg of Midwest Barrel Company, who provides a variety of barrels for a large number of American craft brewers. He explains the role of a “barrel broker” and how he helps brewers find the right vessel for aging, among many other topics. Also, Craig shouts out Revolution's clever event planning, we challenge our highest ABV beer record, and one of us is slowing turning into E.T. by the end. Ethan Schulenberg Interview (00:06:49 - 00:45:26) Beers Reviewed Flipside Brewing - Barrel-Aged Decision Fatigue (Imperial Stout aged in Weller 12 barrels) Mikerphone Brewing - Sweet Drams, vol. 2 (Triple Mash Imperial Stout aged 27 months in Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 15-Year barrels) Half Acre Beer Co. - Triple Barrel Wilderness of History (Barleywine aged in Weller, Russell's Reserve, and Cognac barrels) More Brewing Company - Roaming Elephant (Barleywine aged in Eagle Rare 10 year, Parker's Heritage 14 year, Elijah Craig 18 year, and Elijiah Craig 19 year barrels)
The #23 Cigar of the Year for 2024 is the Padrón Family Reserve No. 96 Maduro. At the 2022 Premium Cigar Association (PCA) Trade Show, Padrón Cigars showcased what would be the seventh installment of its Family Reserve line, the Padrón Family Reserve No. 96. Like most Padrón Cigars, the Family Reserve No. 96 was offered in Natural and Maduro blends. The “96” is significant because it commemorates what would have been the 96th birthday of the late José Orlando Padrón. The Family Reserve No. 96 was offered exclusively to those retailers that attended the 2022 PCA Trade Show. This past spring, both blends of the Padrón Family Reserve No. 96 made their way to retailers. Full Details: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-ukw

In this episode of A Steady Pour, the crew dives deep into a tasting journey featuring two standout bottles from Starlight Distillery's Family Reserve—a rye and a bourbon that spark plenty of lively conversation. They kick things off with the rye, praising its perfect balance of spice and sweetness, layered with hints of butter and a surprising bourbon-like smoothness. It's an approachable pour that even non-rye enthusiasts might enjoy, though the proof packs a punch for the uninitiated.Next, they explore the bourbon, marveling at its creamy, cocoa-laden nose, subtle fruit notes, and buttery finish. Despite its 126-proof label, the bourbon drinks smoother than expected, offering a rich, complex flavor profile that keeps the conversation flowing. The hosts debate everything from proof perception to finish intensity, with ratings reflecting their varied preferences and love for both pours.Between laughs, spirited debates, and a tease of an exciting guest for the next episode, this installment has something for every whiskey fan. Whether you're curious about approachable ryes or bold bourbons, you'll want to pour a glass and tune in for the full experience!

A completely different version of Proof Positive this week. The guys have a regular "Joe" of bourbon of J. T. S. Brown which is a 80 proof Kentucky bourbon whiskey produced by the Heaven Hill Distillery company. The J.T.S. Brown label dates back to 1855. The distilling operation is in Louisville, Kentucky, and aging and bottling operations are in Bardstown, Kentucky. This whiskey was named after James Thompson Smith Brown who was a Master Distiller at the Old Oscar Pepper Distillery which would later become known as Stitzel-Weller distillery and produce some of the worlds finest bourbon whiskeys including Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve and Weller 12 Year old bourbons. Cheers!
Pappy: Known for being a very limited part of the yearly Buffalo Trace "allocation season" for Pappy Van Winkle products, the 13 year Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye doesn't often get talked about as much as some of the other products like Pappy 15 year or the ultra-aged 23 year oak bomb. Sazerac: The One and Only New Orleans Original. Sazerac Rye Whiskey symbolizes the tradition and history of New Orleans. Rye Whiskey dates back to the 1800's, around the time when saloons, veiled as Coffee Houses, began lining the streets of New Orleans. It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with Rye Whiskey and Peychaud's Bitters. The libation became known as the “Sazerac” and America's first branded cocktail was born. This is the whiskey that started it all.

Joel Wilbur, founder of Life of Luxe, shares his personal journey with whiskey and how he got into the world of spirits. He credits his grandfather for introducing him to whiskey, starting with Johnny Walker and blended scotch. Over time, Joel's palate evolved, and he began exploring different brands and styles of whiskey. He eventually discovered his love for bourbon, starting with Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 20 Year Old. Joel also discusses the changing landscape of the whiskey industry, with prices skyrocketing and the limited availability of certain bottles. Despite this, he still enjoys Scotch and Japanese whiskey, although he tends to gravitate towards sweeter options. Coming in at #26 is the La Aurora Fernando León Limited Edition Belicoso. Fernando León is a brand of La Aurora that pays homage to one of the all-time greats in the history, the late Don Fernando León. Don Fernando was the father of current La Aurora Cigars President Guillermo León and son of La Aurora founder Eduardo León Jimenes. 2022 was the centennial of Don Fernando's birth, but La Aurora decided in 2021 to put out a special limited edition cigar in anticipation of that big event - the Fernando León Limited Edition Belicoso. Fernando León is a regular production line of cigars that has been in the La Aurora portfolio for over a decade. The La Aurora Fernando León Limited Edition Belicoso is a completely different blend than the Family Reserve. The blend is highlighted by an extra-aged Dominican-grown Corojo wrapper. The blend features an Ecuadorian binder and fillers from Peru, Nicaragua, and the Cibao Valley in the Dominican Republic. As with all La Aurora Cigars, it is produced at the company's factory in the Dominican Republic. The Fernando León Limited Edition comes in one size - a 6 1/4 x 52 belicoso. The Fernando León Limited Edition Belicoso delivered a straight-forward flavor profile of natural tobacco, wood, cedar, earth, and pepper. These flavors complemented each other very nicely. While it's a medium strength cigar, it was bolder when it came to the body coming in at medium to full. For La Aurora this is the 5th time it has landed on the Countdown. If you are following along at home, this is the first Dominican made cigar to land on the 2022 Countdown. Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-oew

Tripp talks to Willy Herrera about the history behind the new Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve. A non-infused traditional cigar that Willy blended with Drew Estate before officially joining Drew Estate.
The Boys open the show with some timely Perfect Strangers discussion Casey Williams gets heightsick (New Word!) What are we going to do with Star Wars now that Carrie Fisher is gone? The ending of Lost is spoiled. Whiskey Tasting Time! Steve Ausburne breaks out some Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 15yr and a whole lot of Garth Brooks. This leads to a whole Country Music discussion that probably goes on too long, but hey! Charlie Daniels! New Year's Eve is recapped, and there's some talk about watches for no reason at all. I'm just an ol' podcast junkie... Colin Ganley (European Cigar Journal, CigarTourism.com) and Craig Schneider (columnist, The Shoulders We Stand On) are special guests this week. Cigar of the Week - Adrians Havana The Havanna 2000 (Criollo) wrapper, is more of a medium, full-bodied cigar, created specifically for the smoker who wants a cigar that is not too light but not too strong. Sweet on the lips at first pre-light, the strength starts to kick in as the cigar burns, heightening to levels of pure ecstasy. Rocky Patel 15th Anniversary - A medium dark, trunk-pressed cigar that's wrapped in Ecuadoran tobacco grown from Habano seeds. The binder and filler tobaccos are entirely Nicaraguan, and one of the filler varieties is grown on a farm that was specially dedicated to this cigar. The cigars come in dark boxes with metallic plates, and the double bands are the color of gun metal steel. Xikar HC Series Habano Colorado A nice smoke that does not hold up against some of the better smokes of the day. Flavor is good but one dimensional and not very exciting. Relaxing smoke but not outstanding. Created by Jesus Fuego. Thanks to Michael Herklots, this is a very good cigar. New Release from AVO cigars and Davidoff. What's My Band? - A "special edition" from Bob. Blended and rolled by Bob McDuffee. Every week Bob and Dale include an “unbanded cigar” segment in their show in which they smoke a cigar without any markings and give their honest opinions. Bob then opens a sealed envelope and discovers the cigar’s name and manufacturer. If you have suggestions for the "What's My Band?" segment, please send them to liz@cigarmedia.tv.
