This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief takes the backseat and lets the Bottled-in-Bond Professor himself, Bernie Lubbers, steer us through a masterclass in American whiskey history. Known for his relentless advocacy, storytelling talent, and undying love for the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, Bernie has been the face of bonded whiskey for decades—especially with iconic brands like Henry McKenna 10-Year and Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. As Bernie takes a step back as National Brand Ambassador for Heaven Hill Distillery, we raise a glass to a man who has poured his heart into preserving one of whiskey's greatest legacies. In this episode, Bernie dives deep into: • The history and significance of the Bottled-in-Bond Act • How he earned the nickname “The Bottled-in-Bond Professor” • The evolution of Heaven Hill's bonded lineup • His personal whiskey journey—from the stage to the rickhouse • Why Bottled-in-Bond still matters in today's whiskey world And yes, we sip… Big Chief and Bernie share few special pours that helped shape Bernie's career. Whether you're a bonded whiskey nerd or just discovering what those four little words mean, this episode is a tribute to passion, tradition, and one unforgettable ambassador of American whiskey. Raise a glass. This one's for Bernie. Cheers
This week on Chill Filtered, Cole and Bryan crack open a special wheated bourbon release from Heaven Hill Distillery. Before diving into the pour, the guys cover everything from the imaginary monsters kids come up with to the story of John E. Fitzgerald and his sneaky place in bourbon history. On Whiskey World News, Bryan shares the latest update on the recent Buffalo Trace flood and what it could mean for future production. And for “What Whiskey Would You Choose?”, Bryan asks: Which bottle in your collection do your friends request the most when they come over? Also — a quick heads up: Our Instagram account was recently hacked. We're working through the long, frustrating process of getting it restored, but as of now, we don't have access back. We don't believe the hackers have current access either, but if anyone reaches out from our account, please don't expect a response for now. Thanks for sticking with us while we sort this out!

Tune in to find out who's going to the final battle!PIKESVILLE RYEFirst produced in Maryland in the 1890s, Pikesville Rye, along with the rest of the once-booming Maryland Rye industry, was shuttered by Prohibition. The brand reemerged after Prohibition and became the last standing Maryland Rye, as the rest of the industry's production had ceased. Now produced in Kentucky from extra-aged barrels stored in prime warehouse locations, Heaven Hill Distillery keeps this historic Maryland mark alive.Proof: 110 ProofAge: 6 Years OldLARCENY BARREL PROOFLarceny Barrel Proof offers a new opportunity to experience our acclaimed wheated Bourbon mashbill in its purest form: non-chill filtered and bottled at full barrel proof. This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief takes listeners to the bourbon capital of the world—Bardstown, Kentucky—for an unforgettable conversation with his good friend Bernie Lubbers, the National Brand Ambassador for Heaven Hill Distillery and the man known far and wide as The Whiskey Professor. Bernie's journey into whiskey is as fascinating as the spirits he represents. After 20 years on the comedy stage, fate led him down a different path—one paved with barrels, tradition, and the rich history of America's native spirit. For the past two decades, he has traveled the world, first for Jim Beam and now for Heaven Hill, preaching the gospel of great bourbon. His love for Bottled-in-Bond whiskey runs deep, a passion passed down from his father, and today, he stands as one of its greatest advocates. Chief and Bernie kick things off with a pour of the legendary Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond 6-Year—a beloved, now-discontinued gem that bourbon lovers still mourn. They then move on to JW Dant, another Bottled-in-Bond treasure that deserves a spot on every whiskey drinker's shelf. As they dive deeper, they sip on Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond 7-Year, a whiskey bursting with rich peanut brittle sweetness and a beautifully balanced finish. The second half of the show is nothing short of spectacular. Chief and Bernie savor the bold, oak-forward character of Henry McKenna 10-Year Bottled-in-Bond, a whiskey layered with sharp spice, honey, and warmth. And then, the moment of the night—Old Fitzgerald 19-Year Bottled-in-Bond, a rare and luxurious pour that whiskey enthusiasts dream about. Just when Chief thinks the ride couldn't get any better, Bernie drops a bombshell: Heaven Hill is set to release an Old Fitzgerald 7-Year Bottled-in-Bond, available nationwide. This episode isn't just about whiskey; it's about passion, legacy, and the art of storytelling. Bernie Lubbers isn't just an ambassador—he's a master of his craft, a true whiskey evangelist who lives and breathes the spirit of Bottled-in-Bond. So pour yourself a glass, settle in, and join us for another incredible ride on The Whiskey Trip. Cheers!
In this episode, get a taste of how Heaven Hill Distillery is always looking to the future as we discuss what barrel finishing is and how we use this process to craft new, innovative Whiskeys.

A completely different version of Proof Positive this week. The guys have a regular "Joe" of bourbon of J. T. S. Brown which is a 80 proof Kentucky bourbon whiskey produced by the Heaven Hill Distillery company. The J.T.S. Brown label dates back to 1855. The distilling operation is in Louisville, Kentucky, and aging and bottling operations are in Bardstown, Kentucky. This whiskey was named after James Thompson Smith Brown who was a Master Distiller at the Old Oscar Pepper Distillery which would later become known as Stitzel-Weller distillery and produce some of the worlds finest bourbon whiskeys including Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve and Weller 12 Year old bourbons. Cheers!
(Per heavenhilldistillery.com)-Since 1935, Heaven Hill Distillery has focused on the importance of both family and creating quality Whiskeys. We believe that quality Whiskeys come from quality ingredients. And quality ingredients come from long-standing, trusted partnerships that were built on handshakes, not contracts. Heaven Hill Grain to Glass™ highlights this commitment to family and quality by partnering with two family-owned businesses, and taking quality and transparency one step further – starting with the seed. Cheers!
Jeff Crowe is the director of Kentucky Experiences at the Heaven Hill Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. This week my guest is "the whiskey professor" Bernie Lubbers, Heaven Hill Distillery's national brand ambassador. If you want to learn more about bourbon, and one of America's oldest and best distilleries, this episode is for you. Bernie explains the criteria for bourbon, as well as the bottled-in-bond classification, something he's championed since beginning his bourbon career in 2005.We also discuss whiskey tastings and tasting notes in general. I asked him about the price of bottles, especially as it relates to the quality of the spirit. And I feel like it can be overwhelming when you go into the liquor store and see 200 different bottles of bourbon. Where do you even start? Bernie provides guidance.Being the bottled-in-bond guy, we talk about that particular class of bourbons, and how to create your own tasting at home.BERNIE LUBBERS and HEAVEN HILL DISTILLERYFind Bernie on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTokHeaven Hill's Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon WhiskeyBuy Bernie's book Bourbon Whiskey: Our Native SpiritSPONSOR INFOHeaven Hill Bottled-In-Bond BourbonI'm excited to introduce you to Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond bourbon. On March 3, 1897, the United States Congress passed the Bottled-in-Bond Act, which irrevocably changed the future of American whiskey. The legislation established a designation that brands could use to differentiate their spirits from those that were basically knockoffs—neutral grain spirit flavored and colored with a range of deleterious ingredients. It also established rigorous production standards for distillers, who still must follow these regulations when making bottled-in-bond bourbon. On this episode of Fix Me a Drink, hosts Noah Rothbaum and David Wondrich discuss the history of the Bottled-in-Bond Act and why it's still relevant today over glasses of Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon. They're joined by two bottled-in-bond experts: Heaven Hill Distillery's master distiller, Conor O'Driscoll, and national brand ambassador, Bernie Lubbers. Together, they discuss the distillery's decades-long commitment to producing bottled-in-bond whiskies and how this 7-year-old bourbon is leading that tradition into the future. So listen to this new episode of Fix Me a Drink. Cheers! Fix Me a Drink is hosted by world renowned liquor experts Noah Rothbaum and David Wondrich. On each episode, the award-winning duo enjoys a delicious drink while uncovering lost liquor history, exploring modern cocktail culture and interviewing an incredible array of spirited guests. Please drink responsibly. This episode is produced in sponsorship with one of our spirited partners. Podcast Editor: Alex Skjong

Will he be traded, we give our thoughts on where he could go. Are the Chicago Cubs buyers or sellers and if they sell, who are the big ticket players? Brandon and Michael have a rant about the Cubs and their performance. Cody Bellinger & Marcus Stroman are the two hot ticket items, but do they want to sell them? Manny Machado hit his 300th home run... But who would you rather have on your team Machado or Harper? The Baltimore Orioles have had an amazing season. What moves do they need to make in order to improve? What players should they make a play for? Is Ohtani at play? Also, praise and love for Adley Rutchman. Some people have called this the best allocated bourbon of 2022. Others claimed that it was overrated. We are here to settle the debate once and for all! This week we crack open a bottle of Parker's Heritage Double Barreled Blend Bourbon. This is the 16th offering in this series from the Heaven Hill Distillery that honors the legacy of former master distiller Parker Beam. The double barreled blend is a mixture of well aged bourbon (13 & 15 yr barrels) that was matured for an additional month in newly charred barrels. As we taste this bourbon, you'll get to hear us converse about an extra special tasting that Kenny recently took part in, new headphones for Steven, and we'll even check back in with Anthony to see if he can remember what he has and hasn't tasted. It's no surprise that aging is a key component of crafting high-quality American Whiskeys. And at Heaven Hill Distillery, we take aging seriously. In this episode, we explore the process behind our extra-aged releases and hear from the experts on why they're so special.
We're back on our normal game this week as David drinks Perennial Intentionally Indulgent and Gary revisits an old favorite in Evan Williams Single Barrel. The 2022 version of Intentionally Indulgent from St. Louis' Perennial Artisan Ales is an Imperial Stout with tiramisu inspired ingredients including vanilla, Sump coffee, and decadent chocolate sauce and brewed in collaboration with 2nd Shift Brewery.Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage from Heaven Hill Distillery is 7-8 years old and comes in at 86 proof. We also discuss the new list of the top 50 craft breweries by volume that was released by the Brewers Association, and this year featured a few surprises. The top five were all the same from last year, but fast-growing non-alcoholic craft brewery Athletic Brewing jumped 14 spots from 27th to 13th. Bell's is no longer ranked after being purchased last year by Lion/Kirin, and Cincinnati's Rhinegiest moved up five spots from 28th to 23rd. Craft beer gained share of the overall beer market from 13.1 to 13.2% but the overall beer market shrank by 3%. There were also 549 new brewery openings and 319 closings. There's also news this week that the bourbon industry could be worth $12.8 billion by 2031, up from $7.8 billion in 2021.And in a story that we discussed just to say the name of the bourbon is that Furman University released their own private label bourbon called FU All The Time.Make sure to visit Beers and Beards Podcast for a full list of our episodes.Use our NEW code “BeersBeards10” for 10% off at Rivalry Brews as well as 10% off at BeardOctane.com with code BeersBeards10.We also have a new sponsor in Athletic Brewing Co., the largest maker of non-alcoholic craft beer. He is the Chairman of the Board of The Delta Chi Educational Foundation, CEO of All Pro Rush, and the CEO of the Bourbon Whisperer. Follow him on Instagram at the Show Notes: Rod starts by sharing his origin story and what motivated him to leave a 30-year career as a healthcare executive to become the "Bourbon Whisperer." How did he discover this opportunity? Why did he make the leap? (15:00) - Rod discusses how his wife was an essential part of starting the company and helping him craft the business plan. He recognizes how this pivot will be better for him and his career. Having situational awareness of what is going on in the world around you is important to see opportunities. (20:00) - Rod discusses how sales classes and learnings from his career helped him during the transition and manage the tensions and stress of making a dramatic career shift. How do you break out of patterns and habits to do something new? "The chains of our habits are unnoticeable until they are too strong to be broken!" (27:00) - Rod started his business by finding a place to serve others! Start by serving others and you will find a way to grow. (30:00) - The first crisis for the industry was Prohibition from 1920 to 1933. The second crisis in American bourbon history came during the 1960s as the younger generations turned away from their parent's whiskey and turned to clear liquors. When Sean Connery as James Bond asks for a martini "shaken not stirred," this marks the cultural shift. (33:00) - The Heaven Hill Distillery fire shows how this industry, with many generations of family-owned businesses, are connected, and help each other in good times and bad. (39:00) - What is the right way to drink bourbon? (41:00) - Women have three times the taste and olfactory senses men have. They are much better at picking up the tastes and smells in food, wine, and alcohol. (44:00) - Frank Sinatra always drank Jack Daniels. He was the first celebrity endorser of a product and never got paid for it. He had a favorite drink and a secret way to drink it. Rod gives the story of Frank Sinatra. Book Recommendation - "The Way You Wear Your Hat: Frank Sinatra and The Lost Art of Livin" (50:00) - Bourbon does not need to be made in Kentucky but must be made in the United States to be called a Bourbon. The weather, water, and barrel, all impact the bourbon as much as the ingredients. Bottle and Bond - passed in 1897 was the first consumer protection act in America to protect citizens from the "snake oil salesmen" in the old west selling poor-grade alcohols, tonics, and elixirs that were killing people. (1:07:00) - What has happened to give the industry a resurgence today? American Whiskey is booming today. Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery Weller, Old Fitzgerald, and Makers Mark were brands sold off to other distillers. The family held on to one brand "Old Rip Van Winkle." The Japanese market and investment also helped save the American bourbon market. "Wheated Bourbons" are softer and smoother. A few examples are Larceny, Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Old Rip Van Winkle, and Makers Mark. Follow Rod Arnold at The Bourbon Whisperer and on Instagram No matter what you do in life have enthusiasm. We are typically fans of most Heaven Hill products, but these wallet-friendly pours might push the limits of what we like. Which is your favorite, and who do you think we will pick as our winner? Pikesville Rye is something we don't always find so easy here in Iowa, and the Whisky Friends found one, and we opened it up at our table to give this Heaven Hill juice a taste. Heaven Hill says on its website, "The brand reemerged after Prohibition and became the last standing Maryland Rye, as the rest of the industry's production had ceased. Now produced in Kentucky from extra-aged barrels stored in prime warehouse locations, Heaven Hill Distillery keeps this historic Maryland mark alive." In this Episode of The Bourbon Life Podcast, Matt and Mark spend some time hanging out with Bernie Lubbers, aka The Whiskey Professor, Whiskey Brand Ambassador, for Heaven Hill Distillery. The guys talk with Bernie about his incredible past (including 25 years as a touring stand-up comedian) and how that led him into the Bourbon world, the significance of Bottled in Bond from a historical perspective and why that classification is still so important today, and the amazing renovations and expansion that are currently happening at Heaven Hill and what those changes mean to the brand and for consumers. They also taste and review a line-up of 3 different Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond offerings, including Mellow Corn, Evan Williams Bottled in Bond Bourbon, and Rittenhouse Rye.
