Henry Ford foi dono de 2 cidades no Pará: Fordlândia e Belterra. No início do século 20, a Ford Company construiu ruas, casas e fábricas na Amazônia. O processo durou 2 décadas e custou quase meio bilhão de dólares. Para fabricar pneus de borracha em seus carros, Henry Ford foi até o norte brasileiro. Oferecendo um salário de até 5 dólares ao dia, muitos brasileiros, bolivianos, colombianos e venezuelanos foram trabalhar e morar em Fordlândia. Ford acreditava que era possível implantar a mesma cultura de trabalho industrial de Michigan, seu estado natal dos EUA, no interior do Pará. Porém, isso ignorava a cultura e rotina dos brasileiros. Ao longo do tempo, várias desavenças surgiram entre os operários e os administradores de Fordlândia, levando a rebeliões e protestos. A falta de infraestrutura de Fordlândia e as crescentes mortes dos operários por malária resultaram em grandes paralisações industriais. Ford opunha-se a qualquer forma de organização trabalhista e sindical, desmantelando-os com a ajuda do exército brasileiro. Arquitetado por Henry Ford ao final da década de 1920, como parte dos planos estratégicos da sua cadeia produtiva automobilística, FORD estabeleceu na Amazônia sua própria plantação de seringueiras. Ford criaria em plena Amazônia uma espécie de experimento social. No meio da mata, FORD criaria nada menos que uma cidade-empresa que logo ficou conhecida como Fordlândia. A empreitada fracassaria depois de que uma praga devastou toda a plantação de seringueiras levando muitos milhões e dólares com ela. Ford desistiu da empreitada e a cidade foi abandonada, ficando hoje como ponto turístico àqueles que gostam de roteiros alternativos e inusitados. A decisão de Ford em recriar uma cidade aos moldes daquelas vistas nos EUA, vai além da estratégia empresarial. O que se viu foi uma espécie de neo colonialismo delirante que tentou moldar também as crenças, costumes, normas sociais e culturais. Following the trajectory of the artist’s earlier work exploring the automobile industry in Michigan, Rubberlands proceeds from Midwest cities like Detroit and Akron, Ohio—once auto capitals of the world and now entry points for commodities through globalized networks. Connecting the company archives of Henry Ford, Goodyear, Goodrich, General Tire, and Firestone, Karlic traces the evolution of an industry that relies heavily on outsourcing of the Hevea brasiliensis (Amazonian rubber tree). Her photographic fieldwork in Brazil has taken her to manufacturing plants in Salvador and Itaparica, Michelin rubber plantations in the Atlantic forest, a fisherman’s village on the coastal rivers of Itubera in Bahia, and the vestiges of Fordlândia, Henry Ford’s planned community in the Amazon.Karlic reveals threatened landscapes, sites of reforestation, and working factories against the backdrop of their surrounding communities—scenes where living things are transformed into assets and removed from their lifeworlds to supply the demands of capital. By weaving together historical archives and contemporary renderings of environs that production has largely shaped, Karlic moves beyond capturing a static place and time, instead configuring a dynamic space for contemplating the inextricable social and personal bonds that surround labor and natural resources. Karlic holds an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts and a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She is an Assistant Professor in the Art Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she currently resides. Karlic’s work focuses in on industry, diaspora, environmental concerns, and the effects of social upheaval, and has led her to capture imagery all over the world, including the United States, her native Poland, Ukraine, Sierra Leone, French Polynesia, and Brazil. Karlic has been the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship as well as the Cultural Exchange International Fellowship of the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and Sacatar Foundation. In the late 1920s, the Ford Motor Company bought up millions of acres of land in Brazil. They loaded boats with machinery and supplies, and shipped them deep into the Amazon rainforest. Workers cut down trees and cleared the land and then they built a rubber plantation in the middle of one of the wildest places on earth. But Henry Ford wanted this community -- called “Fordlândia” -- to be more than just a huge plantation. He envisioned an industrial utopia. He paid his Brazilian workers good wages, at least for the region. And he tried to build them the kind of place he would've loved to live, which is to say: a small Midwestern town...but in the middle of the jungle.
