Today's story: Beneath the streets of Paris is a huge network of underground tunnels filled with the bones of millions of former residents. Originally built as limestone quarries, the tunnels became a burial site in the 1700s after Paris's cemeteries became overcrowded and unhealthy. The city recently completed a major renovation project to preserve the catacombs and improve conditions for visitors. Beneath the bustling city lies a labyrinth of bones, a vast ossuary containing the remains of over six million people. But beyond its historical significance, the Catacombs have long been associated with ghostly encounters, mysterious disappearances, and an overwhelming sense of unease that grips those who dare to venture inside. As Jen and Joe delve into the history, they uncover the macabre origins of the Catacombs, originally created in the late 18th century to combat the overflowing cemeteries of Paris. With bodies piling up in church graveyards, leading to unsanitary conditions and disease outbreaks, officials made the grim decision to transfer human remains into the city's underground tunnels, formerly used as limestone quarries. Over the years, the bones were arranged in eerie, artistic formations, creating what is now one of the most hauntingly beautiful and unsettling places on Earth. While the Catacombs attract thousands of tourists each year, they are also the site of numerous paranormal reports. Many visitors have claimed to hear whispers echoing through the passageways, despite no one else being around. Others have seen shadowy figures darting between the bone-lined corridors or felt sudden temperature drops that send shivers down their spines. One of the most famous urban legends surrounding the Catacombs involves a man who allegedly got lost while exploring the forbidden tunnels beyond the public sections. Years later, a camera was found with chilling footage of him panicking in the dark before the recording abruptly stopped—his body was never recovered. Jen and Joe also discuss the accounts of secret societies and occult groups who have allegedly held ceremonies deep within the Catacombs. Some explorers have stumbled upon eerie setups—candles still burning, cryptic symbols scrawled on the walls, and even unsettling soundscapes playing from hidden speakers. Could these rituals be summoning spirits from the beyond? Or are they simply the work of thrill-seekers trying to add to the Catacombs' already mysterious reputation? One of the most unsettling phenomena reported is the “Ghost of the Catacombs,” said to be the spirit of a long-dead worker or lost soul who roams the tunnels, sometimes appearing to lead visitors to safety—or deeper into the labyrinth, never to be seen again. Many have reported feeling unseen hands tugging at their clothes or hearing their names whispered in the dark. Skeptics argue that these experiences are likely the result of sensory deprivation and psychological suggestion, but those who have felt the unexplainable beg to differ. In the early 2000s, a video was found in the deepest parts of the Paris catacombs - the 200-plus mile labyrinth of tunnels and tombs filled with real human remains dating back hundreds of years. The video showed a man exploring the darkness, seemingly lost. Then, in an instant moment of panic, he drops the camera and runs. Many claim supernatural fright, but some are saying he was a victim of good, old fashioned claustrophobia. Does the video hold any clues, and have we learned any more information in recent years about the mysterious tape? ----------------- Head to the Strange Places home website, asylum817.com to keep up with all things Strange Places, as well as the host. Welcome back to Black Hoodie Alchemy! This week we're blowing the dust off of an episode recorded in early October. Unfortunately, it was temporarily shelved when I got blindsided by 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week for over a month! If you'd like to hear all about that, just give last week's episode a listen. That in mind, I'm now happy to report that I'm rested, back in a normal routine and ready to hit the ground running with more BHA. This episode, my cohort Chris Fiato and I get into another sprawling, bat-shit crazy and fascinating subject! My research and focus for this episode started with the Paris Catacombs (and this takes up a good half of the runtime or so), but then it quickly spiraled out into the overarching history and psychology of 'subterranea' -- ranging across global history with catacombs, forgotten mines, freedom-fighter tunnels, expansive urban sewer and subway tunnels, and so much more. I even learned about Buddhist torture chambers, functioning city blocks in Scotland that were buried underground intact with businesses and homes still in operation, and an ancient Turkish city that housed up to 20,000 people with several stories underground. And to top that all off, as if this episode wasn't sprawling and crazy enough, we take some time to brush shoulders with the fringe-history conspiracy theories of the ancient advanced civilization of Tartaria and the obfuscation of history through "mud-floods." While these topics in and of themselves could warrant an entire episode, we do our best to get into this a bit and make some sense out of it! We had such an eerily fun time recording this episode, and it's a shame we weren't able to get it out in time for the Halloween season -- but hey, fuck it! It's always a Halloween vibe here at Black Hoodie Alchemy. That in mind, if you're listening to this when it comes out -- happy holidays and thanks for listening! We hope you dig it. From an illegal underground party complete with an orchestra and 100 guests in the 19th century to secret meetings of the French Resistance during World War II, the Paris Catacombs have more than their fair share of history surrounding them. The bones of 6-7 million people are stored down in this network of tunnels, but did you know that before the catacombs were used to store bodies, they were mined for limestone to build attractions such as the Louvre? It was, in fact, an underground quarry.Or that there is a group of people known as “Cataphiles” who live, or more accurately squat, down in the tunnels. It's quite the story. There are police who patrol the tunnels, dubbed the “Cataflics,” who chase the “Cataphiles.” If those tunnels could talk, they'd have quite the story to tell, so join me as I go below the Paris streets to reveal the stories of the Paris Catacombs. For full notes and details on today's episode see the links below:Discover the secrets of the Paris CatacombsThe Private VIP Tour I did of the Paris CatacombsI'm Kylie Lang, owner of Life in Rural France, a travel blog dedicated to helping others explore & discover all that France has to offer. Let's get spooky. Venture below Parisian streets and into the catacombs: hundreds of miles of subterranean tunnels housing millions of human skeletons, some fashioned into sculpture. Alie tracked down Dr. Erin-Marie Legacey – author of “Making Space for the Dead,” professor of French history and one of the world's foremost experts on this eerie place. We chat about everything from miasmas to sinkholes, boggling cemetery history, smells, skulls, hidden chambers, (very) underground parties, and how we view our bodies post-life.
