Challenges of Church Growth Multiplication and Division Acts Focus Passage: Acts 6:1-5 1. The Importance of Unity in the Church * Acts 6:1: “But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily food distribution.” * Growth often brings healthy challenges, and with challenges come opportunities for solutions shaped by God's wisdom. As leaders, we must remember that the same God who brings increase also provides answers. Rather than succumbing to panic, we are called to seek His guidance with faith, trusting that His hand will resolve difficulties when we ask, seek, and knock. * The tension between the Hellenistic Jews and Hebraic Jews regarding the daily distribution of food underscores the importance of addressing cultural and community-specific needs within the church. This conflict wasn't just logistical—it revealed the more profound need for sensitivity, understanding, and intentional inclusion. * The Holy Spirit equips us to be witnesses to all people (Acts 1:8), and He also empowers us with grace to bridge cultural differences, relate to diverse perspectives, and find Spirit-led solutions. Unity is not just a goal; the Church needs to embody the fullness of God's presence. As Jesus prayed in John 17:21, "that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you," unity is the key to effective witness and sustained growth. 2. Spirit-Led Delegation and qualifications for leadership. * (Acts 6:2-4).2 So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program. 3 And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility. 4 Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.” * Every leadership role in the body of Christ should require spirit-filling. Spiritual wisdom is needed to discern God's will and make decisions according to God's heart, not man's. * The Apostles understood their primary responsibility with the early church was prayer and teaching of the Word, especially with the rapid growth, so other vital tasks like assisting widows had to be designated to others who had to be spirit-filled. * In Christ, all we do is go unto Him, in the power of the Spirit. Nothing should be seen as less a duty than something else just because of one's title. 3. The Power of Spirit-Filled Ministry * Acts 6:5-8 "Everyone liked this idea, and they chose the following: Stephen (a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit), Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas of Antioch (an earlier convert to the Jewish faith). These seven were presented to the apostles, who prayed for them as they laid their hands on them. So, God's message continued to spread. The number of believers significantly increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were converted, too." * The power of God is not reserved for a select few but is available to all believers. As Jesus declared in Mark 16:17, the signs accompanying those who believe in Him include casting out demons, laying hands on the sick, and more. The early church leaders, like Stephen and the others chosen, exemplified the qualifications required for leadership: being full of faith and the Holy Spirit. Without these essential traits, we are unprepared to represent Jesus effectively and bring glory to His name. * Furthermore, the act of elders laying hands on new leaders serves as a vital moment of consecration and empowerment, setting them apart for their God-given role. This practice reinforces the spiritual significance of stepping into leadership with prayerful preparation. * When more believers rise to accept their calling and step into leadership, the Lord multiplies His work. As each vessel contributes to the mission, the Kingdom advances, and the message of God continues to spread powerfully, just as it did in the early church. 4. Opposition to Spirit-Filled Witness * Acts 6:9-14 "But one day, some men from the Synagogue of Freed Slaves, as it was called, began to debate with Stephen. These were Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and the province of Asia. Yet, none of them could stand against the wisdom and the Spirit with which Stephen spoke. So they persuaded others to lie about Stephen, claiming, 'We heard him blaspheme Moses and even God.' This stirred up the people, elders, and teachers of religious law. As a result, they arrested Stephen and brought him before the high council. The false witnesses testified, 'This man constantly speaks against the holy Temple and the law of Moses. We even heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy the Temple and change the customs Moses handed down to us.'" * No one can stand against the wisdom of God. When we operate as Stephen did—full of faith and the Spirit—we are empowered to answer any question, speak boldly, and remain unmoved by human opposition, aligning ourselves with God's purpose. However, this does not guarantee that others will respond positively. Some hearts are so hardened and consumed by evil that nothing we say or do will move them. * Opposition may come, often in the form of lies, schemes, and attempts to stop us at any cost. But we must remember that we are not wrestling against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces and principalities of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Because of this, we should not take persecution personally. Instead, we are called to rejoice when we suffer for Christ's sake. By doing so, we share in the fellowship of His suffering and stand in solidarity with all the saints who have endured before us. 5. A Glimpse of Glory Amid Trials * Acts 6:15: “At this point, everyone in the high council stared at Stephen because his face became as bright as an angel's.” * Final Charge: We are called to shine like the sun's rays, reflecting the light of the Son's presence. When our eyes are fixed on Jesus, no earthly opposition or suffering can diminish the glory of God radiating through us. Stephen's face, shining like an angel's, was a testament to his communion with the Lord, even in the face of persecution. * With suffering comes glory! Let us boldly pursue the Lord and His will, keeping our gaze fixed on Him. No matter what happens on earth, we walk in the reality of Heaven. May our lives bear witness to His name, reflecting His light and His love, even in the darkest moments. -- Praise Tabernacle Dr. Joshua Kennedy, Pastor 2235 Ocean Heights Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08234 pastorjosh@praisetabernacle.com praisetabernacle.church (609) 927-4560(w),

The death of Abraham Lincoln sets the stage for one of the greatest political showdowns in American history. On one side stands President Andrew Johnson, a notorious drunk and bigot who was sympathetic to the South. On the other side, Edwin M Stanton and the Radical Republicans in Congress, who want to secure Abraham Lincoln's legacy and protect the 4 million Freed Slaves in the South. The Reconstruction era brings with it a series of firsts: the end of the Civil War, the first president assassinated, and the first impeachment of a president in US History. In the midst of the turmoil, a beloved war hero rises to the occasion and seeks to fill the void left by President Lincoln's murder: General Ulysses S Grant. *** To listen to the entire series—all 59 episodes—right now and ad-free, become a subscriber at IntoHistory.com, a channel of history podcasts made just for history lovers like you. In today's Moronic Roundtable Discussions we have a Black Cult member argue that the New Years ball drop represents the Emancipation Proclamation which is the freeing of slaves. He claims that the ball dropping is symbolic to the ball & chain dropping off of the slaves. Shockingly enough the other members humiliate him & prove him wrong even though he refuses to accept the facts. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/conservativeatheist1970/message

It's most sad when brothers and sisters in the faith begin to question or challenge one another's motives, ideas, or genuineness of of faith. That soon sets one or the other apart from the faith. Those from the Synagogue of the Freed Slaves, however, do just that. And Stephen will stand in the gap for the faith. We know it will cost him his life. His commitment to the truth of the Gospel is commendable. As long as we are on this side of eternity, we will have to contend with those who wish to silence the truth. Hopefully it will not lead to our martyrdom. I am thankful for the unity of the Spirit and the bond of peace that God has allowed me to experience over these past years. And I am thankful for those who uphold the truth of the Gospel for the glory of Christ and the blessing of their neighbors.

On Thursday's show: The Houston Chronicle reports that the online furniture retailer Wayfair plans to drop plans to open a distribution center in Houston, a project that would have created 400 jobs. We discuss that news and what it and stories like it mean about retail and the economy these days. Also this hour: We get an update on the proposed rail merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern and its potential impact on the Houston area. Then, how far would you go to sacrifice for the greater good? It's a question raised in M. Night Shyamalan's new film Knock at the Cabin. Producer Joshua Zinn explores that question in this month's edition of The Bigger Picture. And, after emancipation, a freed slave in Galveston named Hawkins Wilson wanted to reconnect with family members in Virginia he'd been separated from as child. While that never happened when he was alive, a recent documentary shows how it did happen from some of his desendants, including some here in Houston.
Many African Americans are fascinated by Liberia, a small West African country founded 200 years ago by freed slaves from the United States. Some visit the country, while others even move there. But Liberia still bears the scars of the brutal civil wars of the 1980s and 1990s. FRANCE 24's Sophie Lamotte and Sadia Mandjo report.

Recorded June 13, 2022Here's the thing. We totally appreciate the sentiment behind making Juneteenth a holiday. We know it was an attempt to acknowledge and support Black people in America. The thing about American holidays though, is that, as a rule, holidays will be commercialized and in the case of Juneteenth, the commercialization is not uplifting. We honestly think it would have been better NOT to make it a holiday. There are a number of racially inequitable systems in America that desperately need attention (like Health Care, Financial and Educational to name a few) much more than the need for a day off work and some poorly branded Juneteenth ice-cream. I Want to Be Like JesusPastor Trinity Opp Acts 6:8-15 Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, performed amazing miracles and signs among the people. But one day some men from the Synagogue of Freed Slaves, as it was called, started to debate with him. Acts 7:51-60 “You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That's what your ancestors did, and so do you!Name one prophet your ancestors didn't persecute! They even killed the ones who predicted the coming of the Righteous One—the Messiah whom you betrayed and murdered. You deliberately disobeyed God's law, even though you received it from the hands of angels.”The Jewish leaders were infuriated by Stephen's accusation, and they shook their fists at him in rage. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God's right hand. And he told them, “Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God's right hand!”Then they put their hands over their ears and began shouting. They rushed at himand dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. His accusers took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul.As they stoned him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”He fell to his knees, shouting, “Lord, don't charge them with this sin!” And with that, he died. Living as Jesus would live. (6:8-15)The message of Jesus is countercultural. (7:51-54)Living for Jesus is spiritually rewarding. (7:55-56)Living like Jesus is personally demanding. (7:57-60) Challenge: May we be able to look beyond our enemies, obstacles, problems, and perils in life and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Regardless of our situation or circumstances, we must be ready to respond with godliness to the ungodly, even when it means losing comfort, reputation, friends, freedom, or even our very lives. 2 Timothy 1:7-8 says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord.” Supporting Texts:Acts 7:1-531 John 2:6Luke 21:12-18

We are back into our weekly study in 1 Peter on Teaching Thursdays, part of the Better Bible Reading Podcast lineup! Today, we look at verses 13-17 in chapter 2 of 1 Peter where Peter teaches us about the ethical imperative of the Christian life, under the banner of submitting to authority. This submission to authority is explained with a very interesting dynamic of Christians existing in this world as freed slaves. As we are freed from sin, we are obligated to serve God as our covenant-giver.

Origins Of Memorial Day
One of the Earliest Memorial Day Ceremonies Was Held by Freed Slaves. Memorial Day was born out of necessity. After the American Civil War, a battered United States was faced with the task of burying and honoring the 600,000 to 800,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who had died in the single bloodiest military conflict in American history. The first national commemoration of Memorial Day was held in Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868, where both Union and Confederate soldiers are buried. Several towns and cities across America claim to have observed their own earlier versions of Memorial Day or “Decoration Day” as early as 1866. (The earlier name is derived from the fact that decorating graves was and remains a central activity of Memorial Day.) But it wasn’t until a remarkable discovery in a dusty Harvard University archive the late 1990s that historians learned about a Memorial Day commemoration organized by a group of freed black slaves less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered in 1865.

This week, my good friend Joette Harris returns for all the shenanigans. In current events, we discuss Omarion finally discussing the relationship between Lil Fizz, his former bandmate and Apryl Jones, the mother of his kids. Julia Roberts actually being suggested to play Harriet Tubman in the "Harriet" movie and Netflix giving Kevin Hart a show to talk about his problems and relationship with the LGBTQ community after his infamous tweet. In my "Topic of Discussion" segment, we revisit the discussion of boundaries. Boundaries part 2.
Acknowledging how we are complicit in harm towards marginalized groups that are more disadvantaged than us is key to gaining freedom for all. Social media sheds light on the stories that we often would never hear or see but there are still stories that are being hidden about violence on the LGBTQ community specifically Black Transwomen. The humanity is being stripped by homophobic people, ignorant people and privileged people like cis-gender black women who are not checking other groups when we hear them spewing ignorance that will further marginalize them. Transgender people have higher suicide attempt rates than many marginalized groups have due to this group being more targeted and not protected. Transgender people often do not have the same access to work, housing, and basic necessities due to policies and people's personal biases that are imposed upon them. I'm joined by the lovely and witty Jessica from the 3 Spooked Girls podcast to talk about Chapter 21 of GoF through the lens of uncertain freedom. We talk about many wizarding world-related topics, including: What kinds of safety nets could be put in place for House Elves that have been freed? What can Hermione do better to make sure House Elves feel empowered? What parallels does this narrative have to the emancipation of slaves? Are house elves really happy, or is that just brainwashing at work? Here's the article I reference to center our discussion: Emancipation Evoked Mix of Emotions for Freed Slaves. On a lighter note, we talk about how Jessica identifies with Neville, how if you don't have a Ron in your friend group you are definitely the Ron of your friend group, the Aunt Becky scandal and its parallels to the Malfoy family, and much more. Historian Natalie Williams says the Sandy Spring Slave Museum is a place where people can touch history. It was created in what was an “oasis” of slaves freed by Quakers – on this episode of Montgomery Talks with Doug Tallman.
In this episode of Small Talk I collect a series of phone calls I took while streaming my coverage of the midterm elections in 2018. The calls range from discussions of voting legacy as African Americans to the failed campaign strategy of Beto O'Rourke. Support the show (https://www.etsy.com/shop/SmallwoodMedia)
Greetings 9MIND Sacred Sisterhood. Peace, Protection, prosperity and most of all wisdom upon we all and those we love. The question being presented is why Black Americans, descendants of antebellum plantation slavery have failed to advance collectively in the most propserpous, technological advanced and once military super power of the world? Although there are several answers I will give my listeners the answer that most Black Americans will never give you if you ask them. Many will say racism or white supremacy lolz others will say education and others still will say poverty or a lack of Unity. And although I do agreee that all mentioned do play their part the real reason why Black Americans have not advanced is because of how we think and view ourselves in America. I call how most Black Americans think; "PLANTATION PROGRAMMING". Many of we are unaware of it because other Blacks we interact and engage with express (the same) programming so we tend to THINK it's normal and natural and thus have no mental measuring barometer within our own race or culture to define what should be NORMAL as opposed to what should be abnormal. As such the abnormal becomes the normal in the imbalanced Black Mind thus causing we to repeat the errors of our Foremothers and ForeFathers who themselves did not take the time as FREED SLAVES to codify or create a handbook for Freed Slaves still living under constant racial oppression from hoardes of w/usurpers. Because this was not done ex slaves simply relied upon the religion taught them as the only rules of conduct & behavior for themselves & progeny to follow. Now I have mentioned in other broadcast that religion is only useful if you have a solid cohesive COMMUNITYbuilt off shared values and principles first. Religion without this as it's foundation is like a dog who has never known a leash. Link Up @https://twitter.com/El_shiloh9
Finally Free!,Today we commemorate the emancipation of our ancestors with joyful celebrations called Juneteenth. Thousands of Freed Slaves seized the chance to legally walk away from the plantation that held then for generations, migrating as never before. But in their journey to freedom, they also encountered yellow fever, smallpox, cholera, dysentery, malnutrition, starvation, and exposure. WHY!?? WHAT does this reveal about Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, and it's TRUE intent? READ. In "Sick From Freedom" our guest James Downs recounts the measures the US government took to address this crisis:The Medical Division which hired more than 120 physicians, establishing some forty underfinanced and understaffed hospitals scattered throughout the South, largely in response to medical emergencies. Downs shows that the goal of the Medical Division was to promote a healthy workforce, an aim which often excluded a wide range of freed people, including women, the elderly, the physically disabled, and children. Downs concludes by tracing how the Reconstruction policy was then implemented in the American West, where it was also disastrously applied to Native Americans. In this interview we will analyze the widespread medical calamity sparked by emancipation, the clearly convoluted intentions of the Lincoln administration in an over looked episode of the Civil War and its aftermath, poignantly revealed in "Sick from Freedom" Get The Book HERE!
