Shoot us a Text.Episode #1061: China's rare earth restrictions are causing real pain for Europe's automakers, Costco's gas game and checkout tech are stepping up, and American shoppers are oddly calm about rising tariffs—at least for now.Show Notes with links:China's tightened grip on rare earth exports is starting to squeeze Europe's auto manufacturing sector. With critical materials stuck in red tape and only a quarter of export licenses approved, major OEMs and suppliers are bracing for broader production halts in the coming weeks.CLEPA, the European Association of Automotive Suppliers, says hundreds of export license requests were submitted, but only 25% approved since April.Parts plant shutdowns are already affecting suppliers to VW, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Bosch. The slowdown stems from China's April decision to suspend exports of rare earths and magnets amid a trade standoff with the U.S.Delays in customs clearance and license processing are compounding the issue, say VDA (the German Automotive Industry Association) and CLEPA.China may ease restrictions for certain European semiconductor firms, but auto remains at risk.“Production delays and even production outages can no longer be ruled out,” said VDA President Hildegard Mueller.America's third-largest retailer is leaning into its members-first model. Costco is expanding hours at gas stations, testing scan-and-go checkout tech, and adding flexible payment options to stay competitive in a tightening retail race.Gas stations now open nationwide until 10 p.m., with select sites opening earlier too.CEO Rob Vachris says the goal is to drive more foot—and fuel—traffic by boosting convenience.Gas accounted for 12% of Costco's total sales in 2024, thanks to exclusive member access and competitive prices.“Scan & Pay” via smartphone is being piloted to streamline checkout, competing with Sam's Club's tech-forward edge.Costco has also teamed with Affirm for monthly payment plans as shoppers look beyond credit cards.A new survey by Modern Retail highlights that while many Americans are concerned about rising costs and tariffs, their spending behavior has yet to shift significantly.76% of surveyed consumers said they were familiar with recent tariffs; over half believe tariffs increase prices for everyday goods.Despite that concern, 40% reported no notable changes in their purchasing habits.A majority of respondents said they were either delaying planned purchases due to higher prices or had already bought items early to avoid anticipated tariff-related cost increases.Electronics and clothing were identified as the most likely categories to see reduced spending.Over half of respondents expressed optimism about their financial outlook for the next six months.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Venid a conocer”.

Redefining Automotive Quality in a Rapidly Changing Industry

At the heart of The Prophets' vision are “The 24 Essential Supply Chain Processes.” What are they? Find out, and see the future yourself. Click here What does quality really mean in today's automotive world—when the supply chain is shifting, the tech is evolving daily, and the pressure to get it right has never been higher?Scott Trantham is here to answer that. As General Motors' Manager of Supply Quality and Chair of the AIAG Quality Steering Committee, he's helping shape the systems that will define automotive quality—not just today, but for the road ahead.Scott explains how the rise of EVs, autonomy, and complex supply chains puts pressure on traditional systems. Add in growing regulatory pressure and higher consumer expectations, and it's no longer just about making good parts—it's about meeting more demanding standards across a global network. The committee's response? Updating the core tools—SPC, APQP, Control Plan, and more—while aligning with the VDA to create unified global standards.Automation in quality management systems came up as a key point. While standards like IATF 16949 may not require it, Scott outlines clear benefits: better accuracy, visibility, faster problem resolution, and real-time tracking. All strong reasons for suppliers to move away from spreadsheets and manual processes—not because the standard says so, but because it's simply better business. With more than 40 years in the industry, Scott reflects on what keeps him committed: solving problems, launching successful products, and helping shape the future through his work with AIAG.His message to today's quality professionals? Live quality daily, make decisions based on facts and data, and if you get the chance to volunteer on an industry project—take it. You're not just helping your company. You're helping shape the future of the industry.Themes discussed in this episode:How EVs, AVs, and sustainability are changing quality expectations in automotiveWhy updating core tools like APQP and SPC is critical for modern manufacturingThe role of global collaboration in standardizing quality processes across regionsThe need to break down silos between supply chain, IT, and quality teamsHow automation improves quality systems beyond what manual processes can deliverThe challenge of keeping up with evolving ESG and regulatory requirementsThe need to attract and mentor the next generation of quality professionalsWhy mentoring and volunteering are key to sustaining industry-wide quality standardsFeatured on this episode:Name: Scott TranthamTitle: Manager of Supplier Quality and Development at General Motors, and Chair of the AIAG's Quality Steering CommitteeAbout: Scott is the Manager of Global SQ Operations, IT Systems, Training, and Data Analytics at General Motors and has over 40 years of experience in the automotive industry. He also serves on the AIAG Quality Steering Committee and the IAOB Steering Committee, helping shape quality standards across the sector. With expertise in manufacturing, purchasing, supplier quality, and service parts, Scott's strengths range from complex problem solving – delivering solutions that promote industry improvements – to facilitating growth through collaboration and encouraging cross-functional data-driven methodologies to increase efficiencies.Connect:

Laser Radar aligns with new automotive VDA standards

As a subsidiary of the Nikon Corporation, Nikon Metrology has welcomed the recent comprehensive update to Volume 5.1 of the automotive measurement standards issued by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). The newly updated VDA standards cover a more comprehensive array of measurement applications within the automotive sector, addressing the industry's growing demand for more diverse and sophisticated metrology solutions. As Andreas Fuchs, Application Engineer at Nikon Metrology explains: “We already offer innovative, traceable measurement solutions based on national and international standards for the automotive industry. The new standard defines very precisely the procedures for evaluating the precise technology that we provide. After all, with the APDIS Laser Radar, our portfolio has featured a product for some time now that can also deliver traceable inline measurements as described in VDA Volume 5.1. Incidentally, those who use this technology no longer need a dedicated measuring room for a fixed CMM – enabling them to save a great deal of money, time and space.” The APDIS Laser Radar represents a USP with its proven ability to measure details at a distance without needing handheld probes, targets or surface preparation. This makes it ideal for automating repetitive inspection tasks with high accuracy. The system covers many manufacturing, industrial and research applications, including those that involve hard-to-reach features and are complex, delicate, or labour-intensive. The additional benefits of the APDIS Laser Radar include fast and accurate automated measurements with minimal set-up time for maximum productivity with flexible and portable installation. This allows for the absolute and accurate measurement of parts during production or wherever required, including directly on the production line. The APDIS Laser Radar, in particular, displays its strengths in the automotive industry. For example, the system can measure automotive features with absolute accuracy at high speed with no part preparation, whether inline or offline. With inline measurement, data can be collected in a much larger sample, resulting in a much more extensive data volume for process control. Therefore, it is wise to develop and use smart evaluation methods or systems and, in the process, adapt the reaction speed to the increased data volume. “These days, inline measuring technology tends to measure 100% of the parts, giving a very dense test sample with an extremely short response time and close to production,” says Fuchs. “When the part goes through, a real-time statement regarding the quality of the part is delivered immediately – meaning the response time, as well as statistical and general process control, are far better than before. A measuring room, on the other hand, only provides information about ongoing quality with a delay. In addition, there are no statements about the ongoing process, and production continues.” VDA Volume 5.1 appears to consider the trend that measurements are increasingly being made using traceable inline measuring systems instead of offline in the measuring room, making the implementation of suitability certificates for inline measuring processes in accordance with VDA Volume 5 more critical. VDA Volume 5.1 introduces an eight-stage model for evaluating inline measuring systems throughout their lifecycle. This model generates suitability certificates crucial for system release, ensuring compliance with automotive manufacturing standards. These certificates are significant in procurement as tenders for measuring systems regularly reference VDA volumes, highlighting the importance of standards in guiding industry-wide quality control and measurement practices.

Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS) is one of the two image management technologies available in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops and Citrix DaaS.  Historically PVS has been used to deliver Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop workloads (VDA's) to servers and virtual machines from a single image over the network.  However, it can also be used without CVAD/DaaS as a standalone product, physically streaming the OS disk to an endpoint device. These endpoint devices can be “dummy terminals” with no hard drives at all, zero/thin clients, high-end compute and graphics devices, and everything in between.  This can include additional use cases for Security and locations with devices without hard drives. In this episode we discuss the history of PVS and some of its applicable use cases.  We also cover some technical aspects of PVS and the benefits enabled by the roll-forward and roll-back of images.  Host:  Bill SuttonCo-Host:  Geremy MyersCo-Host:  Todd Smith

However, hybrid environments can increase complexity and reduce efficiency for IT departments if not managed correctly, multiplying the number of deployments that need to be managed. With Destination: Hybrid, Citrix makes managing hybrid deployments simple and efficient. Many of our latest feature developments have been aimed at increasing operational efficiency across hybrid, cloud, and on-premises deployments. IT Admins can work from any management location they choose with Citrix, for a fully customizable solution, with no obligation to move fully to the cloud. This shift is part of our Destination: Hybrid initiative to meet you where you are, on-premises, in the cloud, or a combination of both. All of the innovations you will read about below save admins time and effort when rolling out application and desktop workloads. VDA upgrade service, Web Studio for on-premises deployments, automatic agent upgrades, and Autoscale for on-premises deployments offer a wide variety of new tools that will make your environment more efficient than ever, with less effort from your IT team.Host: Andy WhitesideCo-host: Bill SuttonCo-host: Geremy MeyersCo-host: Todd Smith
