It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. APPLE, CHINESE MANUFACTURERS IN TALKS ON U.S. CAR BATTERY FACTORY"Apple Inc (AAPL.O) is in early-stage talks with China's CATL (300750.SZ) and BYD (002594.SZ), about the supply of batteries for its planned electric vehicle, four people with knowledge of the matter said. The discussions are subject to change and it is not clear if agreements with either CATL or BYD will be reached, said the people, who declined to be named as the discussions are private." according to a Reuters Report: "Apple has made building manufacturing facilities in the United States a condition for potential battery suppliers, said two of the sources. A senior official in U.S. President Joe Biden's administration confirmed that condition on Tuesday." https://www.reuters.com/world/china/exclusive-apple-talks-with-catl-byd-over-battery-supplies-its-electric-car-2021-06-08/ PORSCHE'S MACAN EV WILL BEST THE TAYCAN FOR BATTERY RANGE WHEN IT ARRIVES 2023"Porsche electric-powertrain version of its best-selling SUV, the Macan, will promise better battery range than the current Taycan when it hits the market in 2023. A new platform called the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) will underpin the EV, which will be sold alongside the regular gasoline-powered Macan." according to driving.ca: "According to the brand, the vehicle will have “significantly more” range than the Taycan, and even borrow some technology from it. “The 800-volt architecture is taken from the Taycan and we'll bring this to the PPE platform for the Macan,” Steiner said. While the Taycan has been criticized for its relatively low 227-mile (365-km) EPA-rated battery range, the actual mileage on the road regularly exceeds that." https://www.driving.ca/auto-news/news/porsches-macan-ev-will-best-the-taycan-for-battery-range-when-it-arrives-2023 MER UK PARTNERS WITH SHELL'S NEWMOTIONMer, a new entrant to the British EV charging market and owned by Statkraft, announced a roaming partnership with NewMotion, a Shell group company. The agreement opens Mer's 160 charging points to NewMotion clients and Shell Recharge users in the UK." writes electrive: "Mer, part of Norwegian energy giant Statkraft, only launched into the UK market in late April this year, initially as Gronn Kontakt UK. The company says it focuses on getting charging stations into businesses, organisations, key retail locations and into areas managed by local authorities where there will be high usage.   One of the recent partnerships in the UK included the British charge point operator Osprey Charging, formerly known as Engenie. NewMotion has been on a steep expansion course ever since they were acquired by Shell in 2017. They now offer a variety of charging solutions and partner for roaming agreements. Cooperations from beyond the UK border such include Vattenfall, who is using the company to help gain a foothold on the island." https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/07/statkraft-company-mer-uk-partners-with-shells-newmotion/ RAC PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR THE FIRST ELECTRIC VEHICLE RALLY TO TAKE PLACE IN ENGLAND"The RAC has agreed a deal to support the first EV rally to take place in England. Featuring a wide range of EVs from factory models to solar-powered and several self-builds, The London to Brighton EV Rally (L2BEVR) will start on the banks of the River Thames and cover over 58 miles to finish at Madeira Drive on Brighton seafront on Sunday 18 July." says forecourtrader.co.uk: "The RAC has teamed up with the year's event as the official breakdown and recovery partner with its patrols on hand to rescue any of competitor who runs into difficulty." They say: "Any competitor unfortunate enough to go ‘flat' will be able to benefit from our EV Boost technology which provides an emergency charge sufficient to get drivers home or to the nearest charge point. Our vans are also equipped with our unique All Wheels Up recovery system which enables patrols to tow EVs with all four wheels off the ground, and saves time waiting for a separate recovery vehicle. It's like having a flatbed in the back of our vans.” https://forecourttrader.co.uk/latest-news/rac-provides-support-for-the-first-electric-vehicle-rally-to-take-place-in-england/656761.article THIRD OF UK BUSINESSES WOULD CONSIDER INSTALLING CHARGERS FOR EMPLOYEES"One third of firms would think about putting charging points in employees' homes to support the use of electric vehicles, according to new research. One in five claim the increase of home working has influenced their plans. Upfront costs and operational challenges remain a barrier to widespread adoption of home charging" says thisismoney: "The news comes after it was revealed UK businesses plan to invest £15.8billion in the electrification of their fleets over the next year - a 50 per cent uplift on their spending during the previous 12 months. With the Government's ban on internal combustion engine vehicles less than a decade away, it all suggests that more firms are prepared to act now rather than risk delaying their own EV rollout." https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-9648999/One-UK-businesses-plan-install-electric-vehicle-charging-points-employees-homes.html TESLA IS NO LONGER THE MOST POPULAR ELECTRIC CAR BRAND IN NL"Tesla is no longer the most sold electric car in the Netherlands as new tax rules and wider choice impact its place in the rankings, the Financieele Dagblad said on Tuesday. In the first five months of this year, the Skoda Enyaq has built up market share of 11.8%, more than double that of Tesla, which had 18% of the Dutch market last year." according to dutchnews.nl: "One reason for the downturn in the Tesla's popularity is changes in the tax rules for company cars. The maximum catalogue price to be eligible for a tax cut has been reduced from €45,000 to €40,000, and the cheapest Tesla is now around €49,000, the FD pointed out. Company car drivers with an electric vehicle which cost more than €40,000 have to add 22% of that to their annual income for tax purposes. Below €40,000, the figure is 12%." https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/06/tesla-is-no-longer-the-most-popular-electric-car-brand-in-nl/ RESEARCH REVEALS EV CHARGING PRACTICES TO HELP REDUCE BATTERY AGEING"New research has highlighted how temperature and state of charge (SoC) impacts the degradation of lithium-ion (li-ion) batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs). The research by Altelium, an EV battery warranty provider, investigated calendar degradation of li-ion batteries - which is caused by chemical deterioration of batteries when they are not in use, especially when parked." says fleetnews: "The data found the ideal conditions for improving overall battery life is charging the battery once it hits the 10% level and recharge to 80%, instead of allowing the battery to drain to empty or zero and recharging to 100%. The research also highlighted that high-level SoC between 70-80% as the ‘worst' position in which a car should be left parked at, as it could cause greater calendar ageing. EV batteries stored at 70-80% could lose up to four to eight per cent of capacity to hold charge at the end of one year, when compared to the ‘best condition' observed - when the battery is completely discharged, the research found." https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/latest-fleet-news/electric-fleet-news/2021/06/07/research-reveals-ev-charging-practices-to-help-reduce-battery-ageing  QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What noises, if any, should electric vehicles make (inside or outside the vehicle) Email me your thoughts and I'll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast. And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing. Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I'll catch you tomorrow and remember…there's no such thing as a self-charging hybrid. PREMIUM PARTNERSPHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE BRAD CROSBYPORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATIAUDI CINCINNATI EASTVOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNELRICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UKEMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/

Rivian Pick Samsung Cells     Show #1050i   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 12th April. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   2 KOREAN BATTERY MAKERS SETTLE DISPUTE "Two South Korean manufacturers of electric vehicle batteries that are building plants in the United States said on Sunday that they had reached a $1.8 billion settlement in a trade secrets dispute that threatened the domestic battery supply and, with it, the Biden administration’s green agenda." reports the NY Times: "The announcement came on the day of a deadline set by the United States’ trade representative to decide whether to veto an International Trade Commission ruling in the intellectual property case between LG Energy Solution and SK Innovation. The commission’s ruling in favor of LG had threatened SK with a ban on supplying batteries in the country and put its facility under construction in Georgia at risk. The plant, which is still under construction, will supply batteries for electric vehicles for Ford and Volkswagen, and with the settlement agreement, SK is now also free to seek business from other companies."   "Their compromise will allow SK to complete the construction of the $2.6 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Georgia, which will supply electric vehicle batteries for Ford and Volkswagen. SK earlier said it could shut down the Georgia plant if the import ban is not overturned, which could hamper the Biden administration’s EV push and pledge for American jobs" reported Korea Bizwire: "LG, which supplies Tesla and a number of automakers, is the world’s No. 2 EV battery supplier with a share of 23.5 percent, and SK Innovation was in sixth place with a 6 percent share in the global EV market last year, according to SNE Research. The Seoul government welcomed their agreement and vowed to expand support to make the nation a battery power house."   https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/11/business/dealbook/battery-dispute-electric-vehicles.html   http://koreabizwire.com/lg-sk-reach-last-minute-settlement-in-itc-battery-dispute/186988   FREIGHTLINER OPENS ORDER BOOKS FOR ECASCADIA AND EM2 EV TRUCKS "Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has announced that its two very first all-electric trucks - the Freightliner eCascadia and Freightliner eM2 - are now available for order. The decision to start sales comes after a few years since the reveal of the proof of concept in 2018." according to InsideEVs: " During that time, the company has launched and gradually expanded its pilot fleet of 38 electric vehicles that collectively covered nearly 750,000 miles (1.2 million km) in customer hands in North America. The eCascadia and eM2 prototypes were tested in a variety of applications, including drayage, regional and local pickup and delivery, and food and beverage delivery. The Detroit ePowertrain offers three battery options:   210 kWh: charging in 1.5 to 4 hours 315 kWh: charging in 2 to 6 hours 475 kWh: charging in 2 to 6 hours"   https://insideevs.com/news/500134/freightliner-opens-orders-ecascadia-em2/   FRANCE TO OFFER GRANTS FOR ELECTRIC BIKES "France will offer the owners of old internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles a grant of €2,500 ($AU4,000) if they hand over their vehicles for scrap and buy an electric bicycle, according to Reuters. Reporting on Monday, Reuters said that French lawmakers in the National Assembly approved over the weekend an amendment to the country’s ‘Fight against climate change’ bill currently passing through the French Parliament." says thedriven.io: "The bill, which aims to set a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 40% by 2030 based on 1990 levels, will unsurprisingly include a raft of minor legislative goals to reach the country’s ambitious greenhouse reduction target. Included amongst these legislative targets is a plan to offer a €2,500 grant to buy an electric bicycle, in exchange for the scrapping of an old ICE vehicle."   https://thedriven.io/2021/04/12/france-to-offer-grants-for-electric-bikes-in-cash-for-car-clunkers-program/   NEWMOTION'S CHARGING NETWORK JOINS ELECTRIC JUICE NETWORK Octopus Energy and NewMotion, a leading European smart EV charging solutions provider, have agreed that customers of the Electric Juice Network (EJN) can now use the public charge points of NewMotion. NewMotion, a Shell group company, has thousands of charge points in the public charging network in Europe and the UK, including a growing amount of rapid charging at Shell Recharge. Drivers of electric vehicles will now be able to pay with their Octopus Energy account across the participating charging networks, with all costs appearing on a single bill.     PANASONIC SEES BIGGER CELLS AS KEY TO AFFORDABLE EVS "In a rare interview, Panasonic's EV battery boss provided a glimpse of the company's response to the larger battery cells promoted by client Tesla. Speaking to Bloomberg, Yasuaki Takamoto said bigger cells are the key to affordable electric cars, but indicated he's not convinced by Tesla's proposed cell format." says Green Car reports: " Tesla presented its 4680-format cylindrical cell as its future during its Battery Day last year, but it hadn't then produced any significant volume of them. Musk presented it as potentially halving cell cost over time. The bigger cells would also be harder to produce, are prone to overheating, and are more susceptible to particle contamination, Takamoto said. That's a frequent cause of battery fires, which occur when small pieces of metal work their way into a cell and cause it to short circuit, he said."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1131878_panasonic-bigger-cells-affordable-evs-tesla-format-change   TOP 5 MERCEDES EQS FEATURES: ELECTRIC LUXURY! "This is the perfect type of car to go electric... but I'd still rather be driven in this car than drive it! The 2022 Mercedes EQS" - 2 million views already.   This is the perfect type of car to go electric... but I'd still rather be driven in this car than drive it! The 2022 Mercedes EQS "Ola Källenius must be proud of the Mercedes-Benz EQS not only because it can beat the Tesla Model S. Another reason of joy for the Mercedes-Benz CEO is that the electric car will be profitable from day one, according to the executive. He also said it would not make as much money as the S-Class, but there’s a good reason for that." according to InsideEVs; "the EQS will not be a compliance vehicle, according to Källenius. Profits will be “reasonable,”"   https://insideevs.com/news/500393/mercedes-benz-eqs-profitable-beginning/   RIVIAN PICK SAMSUNG CELLS "Rivian announced today that Samsung SDI is going to be supplying the battery cells for its electric pickup truck and upcoming electric vehicles. Securing battery cell supply is the most important thing to achieve volume production of new electric vehicle programs as automakers are fighting for limited supply." according to electrek: "“Rivian announced today that Samsung SDI will supply battery cells for Rivian vehicles. Samsung and Rivian have been working together throughout the vehicle development process to ensure robust cell testing and characterization. “We’re excited about the performance and reliability of Samsung SDI battery cells combined with our energy-dense module and pack design. Samsung SDI’s focus on innovation and responsible sourcing of battery materials aligns well with our vision.”"   https://electrek.co/2021/04/12/electric-pickup-truck-powered-samsung-sdi-battery-cells/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   In order to get people to take up electric cars, do more CEO’s need to be a publicity machine like Elon Musk? Or do the wider public not care, and just want to focus on the cars? Can infamous leaders be good or bad for EVs?     It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PREMIUM PARTNER)     DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. JAGUAR BRAND WILL BECOME 100% ELECTRIC BY 2025 What do you do with a range of cars with a weight and luxury position which suits combustion engines? They have to go electric. "Jaguar is to recreate itself as the Tesla of the West Midlands and go fully electric within four years. The move will involve the scrapping of the current Jaguar range, bar its much-fêted single-battery model the I-Pace, and the closure of the Castle Bromwich factory east of Birmingham as a car manufacturing plant." reports Robert Lea from Financial Times today: "Jaguar Land Rover’s Indian owners, Tata Motors, intend Jaguar to be an all-electric brand by 2025 and car production will move to Solihull alongside Range Rover."   Jaguar XJ Electric has been killed off. Part of a £1bn plan into the Castle Bromwich facility. Facing a write off of between £300-£500m.  200o people work at that site and when the cars made there reach the end of their life, the site becomes non-production.   There will be a battery option on every model by 2030 from the group.   The first electric Land Rover will be released in 2024.   The Jag brand is going all electric and further upmarket.   Schmidt Automotive Research said: "The move by the Tata owned premium brand manufacturer is likely driven among other reasons by European Union legislation, with the phase-out of the so called derogation rule applied to passenger car manufacturers that qualify for “niche” car manufacturer status, and therefore register between 10,000 and 300,000 vehicles per year across the 27 market region. The EU CO2 targets are also replicated by British legislation, in place since the UK departed the European Union in 2021 following a one year transition period.  The derogation phase-out will take place between 2026-2028. The new series will include electric and conventional drives and cover both the light commercial vehicle and passenger van segment. All vans will be made in France." asys electrive "What this means for the future of the Nissan eNV-200 remains unclear. Currently, Nissan is making the e-van in Barcelona, but already said they would close the Spanish plant at the end of this year. Still, the statement now published consider the new all-electric Nissan van to “build on the success of the e-NV200, which was the first all-electric commercial vehicle for the mass market when it was launched in 2014”. So far, Nissan sees production “alongside the next-generation Renault Kangoo” in France."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/02/13/nissan-announces-plans-for-next-gen-small-van-in-europe/   VW'S HERBERT DIESS: "I'M NOT SCARED OF APPLE" "Volkswagen's CEO Herbert Diess isn't intimidated by Apple, even though the tech company potentially has an electric car on the way." says CNN:"Volkswagen is also aiming to be a dominant force in the electric car field. The car company sold 231,600 battery electric vehicles in 2020, according to figures published by the company in January. Although that's less than half the number of sales Tesla made last year, it represents an increase of 214% on the previous year and shows Germany's huge auto industry is beginning to mount a challenge to the leader in electric cars."   HD: "The car industry is not a typical tech sector that you could take over at a single stroke, Apple will not manage that overnight."   https://edition.cnn.com/2021/02/14/tech/volkswagen-ceo-apple/index.html   TESLA MODEL Y GETS REFRESHED CENTRE CONSOLE "The most recent Model Y refresh creeping into Tesla stores comes with a non-glossy matte black center console, according to reports this week from new owners" says Forbes.com: "And it gets even more confusing between the Model 3 and Model Y. The Model 3 and Model Y are similar cars in many respects. So, sometimes the Model 3 gets features first introduced on the Model Y and sometimes vice versa. For example, the refreshed Tesla Model 3 got things from the Model Y such as “chrome delete” (black replaces the chrome door handles and window trim), a heat pump, and power trunk. And the Model Y has gotten things first introduced on the Model 3 such as auto-dimming side mirrors and double-pane window glass."   TESLA INTRODUCES BUYOUT LEASE PROGRAM "For some time, Tesla has not allowed owners to purchase their cars at the end of a leasing period. The car is to be returned to the automaker with no chance of a leaseholder buying out the car at the conclusion of the period. The car would be added to the company’s used inventory, to third-party resalers, or reserved for the future use of the Robotaxi fleet." says Teslarati: "Tesla is offering the option to buy a vehicle at the end of a lease in some markets. The customer has the option to return the vehicle as well in some cases, and Tesla is “reasonably certain” that the leaseholder will take possession of the vehicle title when the lease ends."   Belgium Croatia Denmark France Italy the Netherlands Poland Taiwan   TESLA GRANTING ACCESS TO THIRD PARTY REPAIRERS – WITH A CATCH! "Independent car dealerships now also have unrestricted access to the Tesla brand's repair and maintenance information. At the turn of the year, the vehicle manufacturer adapted its platform for repair and maintenance information accordingly." says Automobilwoche: "In mid-2020, the industry association ZDK and other market participants lodged a complaint with the EU Commission against Tesla's discrimination against independent service companies. According to the current legislation, all motor vehicle operations must be granted non-discriminatory access to repair and maintenance information as well as to diagnostic and programming software. Owners can remotely monitor and control the Ford Connected Wallbox from their smartphone using the FordPass smartphone app, 3 enabling them to check on current charge, energy used, and even remotely enable family or friends to use the charger The company also recently announced Mustang Mach-E customers placing an order this year and into 2021 will receive five years of free access 1 to the leading FordPass Charging Network, and one year of free access 1 to the IONITY fast-charging network.  Delivered in partnership with NewMotion, the FordPass Charging Network is the largest network of public charging stations in the region. Customers will be able to use the FordPass app to effortlessly locate, navigate to, pay for and monitor charging at locations across 21 countries – initiating and paying for services from a single account. Charging with up to 150 kW at an IONITY station, Mustang Mach-E in extended-range battery, rear-wheel drive configuration is estimated to add an average of 119 km (73 miles) driving range within approximately 10 minutes of charging. Mustang Mach-E has a targeted WLTP pure-electric driving range of up to 610 km (379 miles), 7 and will be in European dealerships from early next year.   https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/feu/en/news/2020/10/09/Go-Electric-Hamburg.html   TESLA TO RELEASE ‘FULL SELF-DRIVING BETA’ "Tesla is going to release its ‘Full Self-Driving Beta’ to some customers who are “expert and careful drivers” next week, says CEO Elon Musk. He has been teasing the new core change to Autopilot, which should be able to interpret its environment in 4D instead of 2D after the update, and should result in a rapid improvement in performance and new features being released quicker." reports Electrek: "Now the CEO took to Twitter to announce that the limited “private beta” release would happen next week and instead of referring to it as the launch of the Autopilot rewrite, he started referring to it as “limited FSD beta”: “Limited FSD beta releasing on Tuesday next week, as promised. This will, at first, be limited to a small number of people who are expert & careful drivers.”. The CEO didn’t elaborate further on the upcoming software update, which is not expected to be released to the broader fleet until December."   https://electrek.co/2020/10/12/tesla-release-full-self-driving-beta-customers-next-week/   TESLA ARRIVES IN INDIA "Elon Musk recently confirmed that his electric vehicle manufacturing company will enter the Indian market soon, possibly by next year. While there is little information about Tesla’s business plans for India, Tesla fans cannot seem to wait to see a Model 3 or Model Y on the streets." says Hindustan Times: "Tesla's entry could come at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is increasingly becoming focussed on promoting the use and manufacture of electric vehicles. However, Musk did not explain what Tesla’s business plan would be in India, given that the EV culture and infrastructure to support is still at a very nascent stage in the country when compared to US, European or even some of the Asian markets. Tesla's entry into India, if it does take place, does not automatically mean opening of showrooms and selling of cars."   https://auto.hindustantimes.com/   ARRIVAL ‘MICROFACTORY’ IN SOUTH CAROLINA "Arrival, a U.K.-based electric vehicle startup backed by Hyundai and Kia that’s preparing to make electric delivery trucks for UPS, is building a small-scale “microfactory” in South Carolina that will be able to make as many as 1,000 battery-powered buses per year.  its flat, skateboard chassis is put together from extruded aluminum components, body panels are joined with aerospace-style adhesives and coloring is done by dying the composite material or wrapping a vehicle." according to Forbes: "The microfactory is the company’s first in the U.S. and “is the beginning of a paradigm shift in the EV space,” said Mike Abelson, Arrival’s North American CEO, a former General Motors GM +0.2% executive overseeing the automaker’s electric vehicle strategy. The company is investing just $46 million to set up its first U.S. production facility in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and will employ 240 workers when it opens late next year.  The company’s microfactory concept is also intended to make the manufacturing process as inexpensive as possible. Rather than requiring hundreds of acres of land and a purpose-built structure, the company says it can set up and equip a microfactory in a conventional warehouse space in about six months."   https://www.forbes.com/sites/alanohnsman/2020/10/12/electric-truck-startup-arrival-putting-46-million-microfactory-in-south-carolina/#da41a7c443f1   GMC’S HUMMER EV TO USE EPIC’S UNREAL ENGINE   "Fortnite creator Epic Games is partnering with carmakers, starting with General Motors, to use its Unreal Engine game development platform to build in-car software in what Epic is calling its “human-machine interface” (HMI) initiative. The first car to use Unreal Engine, which is the primary software toolset with which developers make Fortnite and countless other big-budget video games, will be GMC’s upcoming Hummer EV, set to be unveiled on October 20th." writes The Verge: "The logic is simple: modern cars are primarily designed using software, and assembled cars carry scores of onboard computers and rely on touchscreens and digital interfaces to power infotainment centers and other sources of information displayed to drivers. And Unreal Engine is a great platform for building software, which Epic thinks makes it a great platform for building the software that goes into cars."   Epic says: "When you sit in the driver’s seat of a modern car today, the way you interact with the vehicle is different from a few years ago. Buttons and screens dominate the dashboard, steering wheel, and instrument pane, providing features that may be new to you. Electrification is at the root of many of these advances, with digital hardware such as cameras, sensors, and displays, combined with cutting-edge technology like Unreal Engine, forming a framework on which to build new experiences. At Epic Games, we’ve long been interested in the way the requirements for HMI development overlap with those of game development. Much of the functionality required to create HMI systems has been available in Unreal Engine for some time. Unreal Engine provides best-in-class visuals for production HMI, with car paint materials and reflections that bring the highest quality real-time graphics to the vehicle. A comprehensive set of visual effects features that have been hardened by game development give automotive designers a robust set of tools to express creativity in their HMI designs.”   https://www.theverge.com/2020/10/7/21506572/epic-games-unreal-engine-general-motors-gmc-hummer-ev-human-machine-interface   MERCEDES-BENZ EQC 4X4² CONCEPT "Mercedes-Benz has revealed the latest in its growing line of hardcore four-wheel-drive prototypes, the EQC 4x4² - a one-off conceived to explore the ultimate off-road capability of the German car maker’s first dedicated electric model." says Autocar: " it receives heavily reworked suspension with multi-link portal axles that serve to site the wheels much lower than the axle hubs for vastly increased ground clearance.  ground clearance has increased by 153mm over the standard EQC, at 293mm, which gives Mercedes-Benz’s latest four-wheel-drive prototype 58mm more clearance than the standard G-Class."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/first-drive-mercedes-benz-eqc-4x4%C2%B2-concept   DACIA SPRING EV TEASED AGAIN AHEAD OF OCTOBER 15 DEBUT " the Dacia premiere, which we all know is the production version of the Spring concept EV. Essentially an updated and rebadged iteration of China’s Renault City K-ZE, the Dacia Spring promises to make electric mobility accessible to all and is said to offer a driving range of more than 124 miles (200 km) based on the WLTP test procedure. Renault also says the Dacia Spring will become available in the first half of 2021 as Europe’s most affordable EV. Interestingly, Dacia’s first EV won’t be available in the UK." says Carscoops   https://www.carscoops.com/2020/10/renault-electric-hatchback-concept-production-dacia-spring-ev-teased-again-ahead-of-october-15-debut/   2020: THE YEAR OF SPACS "Romeo Systems Inc., which makes lithium-ion battery modules and packs for commercial electric vehicles, is the latest vehicle electrification technology company to pursue public ownership through a reverse merger." says FreightWaves: "Romeo, based in the Los Angeles suburb of Vernon, California, announced a definitive agreement Monday with RMG Acquisition Corp. (NYSE: RMG), a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), to combine businesses. Romeo Power’s pro forma valuation would be $1.33 billion.  The Wall Street Journal reported Sept. 21 that Nikola was testing Romeo batteries for use in the Nikola Tre.   Also on Monday, executives of Hyliion Holdings Co. (NYSE: HYLN) rang the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). It celebrated the Sept. 28 completion of its reverse merger with Tortoise Acquisition Corp., a SPAC that raised $560 million for the startup electric driveline maker. Switchback Energy Acquisition Corp. (NYSE: SBE) began the SPAC process with charging station developer ChargePoint Inc. on Sept. 24. That deal would value ChargePoint at $2.4 billion. ChargePoint, which has 115,000 charging stations, would get $542 million when the reverse merger closes."   https://www.freightwaves.com/news/blank-check-companies-target-battery-and-charging-suppliers   ELECTRIFY AMERICA INSTALLING 36 ULTRA-FAST EV CHARGING STATIONS AT MEIJER STORES IN ILLINOIS AND MICHIGAN "Electrify America, the largest open DC fast-charging network in the US, is collaborating with Midwestern retailer Meijer to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at nine of its stores across Illinois and Michigan." says Green Car Congress: "The stations will offer a total of 36 ultra-fast public EV chargers, increasing the availability of public charging options in the greater Chicago area and throughout the state of Michigan."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/10/20201011-ea.html   HYUNDAI BEGINS BUILDING ELECTRIC VEHICLE HUB IN SINGAPORE "South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co 005380.KS started construction on a research and development centre in Singapore on Tuesday that will house a small-scale electric vehicle production facility."according to Reuters: "Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the facility may produce up to 30,000 electric vehicles (EVs) annually by 2025 and represents an investment of S$400 million ($295 million). A Hyundai spokeswoman confirmed the 30,000 unit target but said that the exact capacity was yet to be determined. The facility is due for completion by end 2022, the firm said in a statement."   https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-hyundai-singapore-idUKKBN26Y0HW     You can listen to all 905 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSYMONS.CO.UK – THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SPECIALIST (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DARREN FEATCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NICHOLAS MILLER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. Show #702   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 19th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   95.6 GWH OF EV BATTERY CAPACITY DEPLOYED GLOBALLY IN 2019 "In 2019, 95.6 GWh of battery capacity was deployed globally in newly sold passenger EVs, an increase of 30% over the year prior, according to Adamas Intelligence’s web-based EV Battery Capacity and Battery Metals Tracker." reports Green Can Congress: "At the global level, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were responsible for 90% of all passenger EV battery capacity deployed in 2019, followed by plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with 7% and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) with the remaining 3%."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/02/20200218-adamas.html   MOBILITY 2020: WHAT THE YEAR HAS IN STORE More than 30,000 pre-bookers have registered in advance for an ID.3 r , and this year they will be able to take delivery of their car. This means that Volkswagen Group’s vision of building e-cars for the masses is now becoming reality. Further fully electric models from the ID. Family will follow in the coming years. By 2029, Volkswagen plans to launch up to 75 pure electric models across the Group, plus around 60 hybrid vehicles.   In 2020, the first two Volkswagen plants designed purely for electric cars will begin series production. In Anting and Foshan, the SAIC VOLKSWAGEN and FAW-Volkswagen joint ventures will produce around 600,000 pure electric vehicles on the MEB basis every year. MEB production “Made in China” is then to be gradually expanded to 15 different MEB models across different brands by 2025.   In 2020, stricter emission standards will come into force in India, opening a new chapter in the subcontinent’s passenger car market. In an unusual step, the government decided to skip one emission standard stage and switch directly from the current BS-IV (Euro 4) to BS-VI (Euro 6) standard. Thanks to timely developments, all Volkswagen Group models based on the ‘INDIA 2.0’ strategy will comply with these standards. With emissions of 2,654 Megatons, India is the third largest CO2 emitter worldwide after China and the USA.   In California, cars with low CO2 emissions have been allowed to use so-called HOV lanes (high-occupancy vehicle lane) since this year – even if only one person is in the car. These lanes are otherwise reserved for cars with at least two occupants. All vehicles that fall below specified emission levels are marked with a “clean air sticker”.   https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/stories/2020/02/mobility-2020-what-the-year-has-in-store-for-motorists.html   CITROËN C5 AIRCROSS PHEV UP FOR ORDER IN THE UK "Citroën has officially opened the order books for the new C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid in the UK. It is being offering it in two grades named the Flair and Flair Plus. Pricing starts at £35,340 and £36,815 respectively. Customer deliveries will begin in mid-2020." reports electrive: "the plug-in hybrid offers a system output of 165 kW, to which the electric motor contributes 80 kW. The battery with a capacity of 13.2 kWh enables a purely electric WLTP range of up to 50 kilometres."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/18/citroen-opens-uk-order-books-for-the-c5-aircross-phev/   TESLA MODEL S “RAVEN” HITS IMPRESSIVE 181 KW "A Tesla Model S was recently able to hit a peak charging rate of 181 kW during a Supercharging session. While the flagship sedan’s peak charge rate is still a bit behind the Model 3’s peak charge rate of 250 kW on a V3 Supercharger, it is nevertheless impressive, highlighting the fact that Tesla’s vehicles are in a constant state of improvement." says Simon Alvarez at Teslarati: "Tesla owner-enthusiast Eli Burton of the My Tesla Adventure YouTube channel recently paid a visit to the Fremont factory on his Raven Model S Performance. The vehicle only had 5% of charge left on its 100 kWh battery pack, giving the flagship sedan the opportunity to experience a full charging session on one of the site’s V3 Superchargers."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-hits-181-kwh-peak-supercharger-v3-video/   TESLA CAN SELL IN COLORADO, BUT RIVIAN CAN’T "A new bill, SB 167, has been introduced in Colorado which would allow electric vehicle manufacturers to bypass the state’s direct-sales ban." writes electrek: "Rivian is looking to follow a similar model as Tesla, as the model makes sense for them as well.  But they don’t fall under the same exception as Tesla in Colorado law, so they need this new bill to pass. Colorado is important for Rivian.  The state is one of the larger electric vehicle buyers in the US, coming in fourth place in per capita EV sales.  It’s also full of exactly the kind of adventure truck/SUV buyers Rivian is targeting with their R1T and R1S."   Read the full article here: https://electrek.co/2020/02/17/tesla-can-sell-in-colorado-but-rivian-cant-dealers-oppose-a-new-law-to-change-that/   NEW SERVICE CENTER ORANGE COUNTY - MODEL 3 ONLY! Starting today, to improve the service experience for all owners, Santa Ana will only schedule Model 3 owners, while Costa Mesa will only schedule Model S and Model X owners. All other Service Centers in the area will continue to serve all Models. Schedule your next appointment with your Tesla app. For most repairs, Mobile Service will be selected when scheduling your appointment to have a technician come to you — the most convenient way of servicing your car. We look forward to delivering tailored service throughout Orange County."   User AEdennis: "That’s been the plan with Santa Ana and Costa Mesa for a while. Glad to see it publicized"   https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/new-service-center-orange-county-model-3-only.185467/   FORD MANAGER: "JUST BEING ELECTRIC IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH." Ted Cannis, Director Global Electrification at Ford Motor Company spoke.   "In Germany, many think that the fuel cell will come soon. Regardless of whether I speak to French, Canadians or Chinese, there are no concerns about the battery because customers are waiting for hydrogen. However, battery technology is now available, is constantly evolving, charging is becoming easier, the requirements of the government are moving in this direction and so are our competitors - there is currently a critical mass moving towards battery-electric cars."   "We have a lot of new customers who haven't owned a Ford yet. One of the dealers I spoke to has 12 reservations - all new customers. They are also more than ten years younger."   "Our experience has shown that the sound will not be an obstacle. We were on the road in the USA with prototypes of the electric F-150 pickup . Nobody missed the sound of a V8 there! This shocked us almost more than with the Mustang. On request, we will also have a very authentic sound in the Mustang Mach-E."   " the entire software can receive over-the-air updates so that the car stays fresh over the years. We want to offer our customers a modern user experience that develops over time - as they know it from websites or apps."   "the "FordPass" app. Here, our European customers can get access to over 125,000 charging points from the NewMotion roaming network and can easily bill for Ionity's HPC loaders and charging."   "With electric cars, the software is at least as important as the hardware, yes. Now we have a vehicle in which almost all modules can be updated. So why shouldn't we take advantage of this to provide improvements to the customer? And of course, for that we have to constantly develop the software."   "The battery cells come from LG Chem from Poland. From there they are shipped to Mexico, where we assemble them into ready-to-install battery packs - right next to the production of the Mustang Mach-E. Until recently, we only had a few hybrids in Europe, but Ford has been using lithium-ion batteries since 2012. It will offer rebates capped at $20,000 per vehicle."   https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/singapore-budget-2020-push-to-promote-evs-in-move-to-phase-out-petrol-and-diesel   VOLKSWAGEN PLOTS RUGGED ELECTRIC 4X4 SUV FOR 2023 "Volkswagen is on the verge of giving the green light to a new ID-branded SUV to rival the upcoming BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz EQB. " according to Autocar.co.uk "The electric-powered SUV is known to officials at Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg headquarters in Germany as the Ruggdzz, a working title that draws on the word ‘rugged’.  Although it is still at a preliminary stage of development, the new ID model is expected to enter production in 2023 as part of a 30-strong SUV line-up planned by Volkswagen by the middle of the decade."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/volkswagen-plots-rugged-electric-4x4-suv-2023   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Are you happy to pay extra for add-on features or apps for your EV, after you’ve bought it?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #688   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 5th February 2020. ELECTRIFY AMERICA COMPLETES 400 EV CHARGING STATIONS "Electrify America confirmed that they completed the installation of their first 400 EV charging stations only 20 months after starting the deployment" says Electrek: "They started deployment less than two years ago, and today, they confirmed that they have already achieved their initial goal of deploying 400 stations, including over 1,700 charge points. Brendan Jones, COO of Electrify America, confirmed the news to Electrek, but he clarified that while all the stations are deployed, some of them still need to be activated and are awaiting approval from the local electric utility. All of the company’s highway fast-charging stations are equipped to charge vehicles at up to 350 kW, even though most electric cars on the road today can’t receive that much power. The company says that they are planning for the future EV fleet as much as five years ahead. They also have 150 kW in urban areas for city charging."   https://electrek.co/2020/02/03/electrify-america-400-ev-charging-station-tesla-supercharger-rollout/   BIGGEST EU TESLA CHARGE PARK YET PLANNED IN GERMANY "Tesla’s largest fast-charging park in the EU will soon go online on a plot of land owned by bakery Roland Schüren at the Hilden motorway junction (A3/A46) near Düsseldorf." according to electrive: "According to local media reports, “on February 14th, a 16-pallet supercharger with a 1-megawatt transformer will initially go into operation there”. Tesla intends to build a total of 40 stalls of the latest generation V3 chargers with a peak output of up to 250 kilowatts at the Hilden intersection."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/03/biggest-european-tesla-charge-park-yet-planned-in-germany/   GM'S EV DAY "General Motors will be hosting an "EV Day" on the 4th of March. The announcement came from President Mark Reuss during the company's Capital Markets Day presentation on Wednesday. Besides helping to communicate the extent of this monumental shift at the country's largest automaker, we expect to learn a few specifics about its future EV plans." says Domenick at InsideEVs: "While the near-term will bring a refreshed Bolt EV for 2021, and (hopefully) the rumored Bolt EUV (electric utility vehicle), GM's electric future well and truly gets underway when it starts to roll out product based on its "BEV3" program. This is where the focus, future product-wise, at least, will be during GM's EV Day next month. We already know that the new 2022 Hummer EV truck will be the first BEV3 vehicle to be produced, starting in the Fall of 2021"   https://insideevs.com/news/397039/gm-ev-day-electric-future/   EVS CONTINUE SALES SUCCESS IN JANUARY 2020 FIGURES "The UK electric vehicle market continues to go from strength to strength, as the number of pure-electric cars tops the 100,000 mark in January 2020 - seeing registrations up more than 200% compared to last year." according to Chris at Next Green Car: "The latest set of statistics rom the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that more than 4,000 pure-electric cars were registered during the month. This figure, combined with more than 4,750 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars sold made January second best performing month in history in terms of electric vehicle market share at 5.9%. Total plug-in car registrations - pure-EVs and PHEVs combined - is now more than 273,000 units in the UK. Whilst still representing a relatively small proportion of the overall car market in the UK, it is clear that the demand is there from customers, as sales continue to grow as new models go on sale and greater numbers of EVs become available. Diesel sales continue to drop - -36% in January"   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/8849/evs-continue-sales-success-in-january-2020-figures/   HERO’S NEW 53 MPH ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE "Hero Electric has taken to the Auto Expo 2020 show to unveil its first electric motorcycle, the Hero Electric AE-47, among other new personal electric mobility vehicles." says Micah at Electrek: "The AE-47 was unveiled today with a listed top speed of 85 km/h (53 mph) generated from a 4kW (5.3 hp) continuous-rated rear hub motor. While that isn’t likely to make the AE-47 feel at home on the highway, it’s certainly sufficient as a light electric motorcycle for city use."   https://electrek.co/2020/02/05/heros-new-53-mph-electric-motorcycle-gets-100-mile-range-estimated-under-2k/   TESLA TO UTILIZE SIDE CAMERAS TO HELP DRIVERS BACK UP @teslaownersSV Can we get the side cameras to show up when backing up?   @elonmusk Yes   Teslarati reports: "Tesla vehicles have eight cameras that practically serve as the eyes of the vehicle, giving it a 360-degree view of its environment. When backing up though, drivers rely only on the rearview camera and sensors to park. Being able to utilize the side cameras will give drivers a better view of any spots they want to back up into, thereby reducing annoying incidents of wheel rash, dings, or in some cases, dents."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-side-cameras-back-up-assist-elon-musk/   AMAZON AND RIVIAN DISH DETAILS ON THEIR NEW ELECTRIC DELIVERY VAN "Rivian may be best known for its upcoming R1T electric pickup truck, but Amazon may give the startup the most exposure yet. After detailing plans of a partnership between the online retail giant and the electric vehicle maker, the two surprised with plans to create a purpose-built electric van for Amazon deliveries." reports CNET: "On Tuesday, both companies gave us a closer look at what's going on behind the scenes to bring this package delivery vehicle to lifeThe cockpit will include a totally digital instrument cluster, central screen with Alexa built-in (obviously) and Amazon's logistics management. Drivers won't need any external devices for mapping and Alexa will handle all voice commands to keep workers from entering information manually. We'll first see the vans hit the road in 2021 with a deployment of 10,000. Then, a total of 100,000 of them will be on the streets delivering packages by 2030."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/rivian-amazon-electric-delivery-van-design-features-2021/   SHELL DOUBLES ULTRARAPID-CHARGING STATIONS IN GERMANY "In addition to the already planned 50 HPC columns with 150 kW that Shell is building with the energy supplier EnBW, the oil company is now promising another 50 HPC columns in a second wave, apparently primarily in northern Germany." picks up electrive: "Shell, for example, took over the German battery manufacturer Sonnen in February 2019, the charging infrastructure specialist NewMotion in October 2018 and, at the beginning of the year, the US company Greenlots, which also focuses on this field. In mid-December, Shell installed the first HPC column in Germany at the filling station in Reutlingen."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/05/shell-doubles-fast-charging-stations-in-germany/   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   On a scale on 1-10, (1 being not at all, 10 being completely) how much does/did environment come into your love of EVs?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #640   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 13th November 2019. TESLA’S MODEL 3 SUCCESS HITS BMW THE HARDEST Part 4 of Bloomberg's Tesla Owner survey is out and it's a recommended read. Here are some highlights: "We asked 5,000 owners about what it’s like to live with Elon Musk’s electric car. Here’s what we found. The average Model 3 goes for around $50,000, which is more than any of the top 10 vehicles that buyers traded in from other brands, according to responses to Bloomberg’s Model 3 owners survey. No other sedan in America is generating more revenue. While Tesla took the largest number of customers from Toyota, it affects the Japanese automaker very little. That’s because Toyota’s market share in the U.S. is enormous. [However] as a proportion of a brand’s U.S. sales. It shows BMW to be the automaker with the most to lose—almost five times more vulnerable than Mercedes-Benz.  Many said Tesla’s mission to accelerate the adoption of electric cars creates an unusual sense of owner camaraderie. About 55% of respondents said their opinion of Musk influenced their decision to purchase the car. Model 3 Owners Are Tesla’s Biggest Sales Force."   In terms of the brands most vulnerable, BMW, Mini, Audi, Acura, Infiniti, Porsche, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.   https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2019-tesla-model-3-survey/market-evolution.html#intro   TESLA ADDS MORE BATTERY CAPACITY TO HELP EV OWNERS ESCAPE BUSH-FIRES "Tesla has issued a temporary software update to vehicle owners in regions of NSW and Queensland currently impacted by bush fires. It extends the available battery capacity in some models that otherwise have that capacity locked by the vehicle’s software." reports TheDriven.io: "the software update would allow owners of models that include the Tesla S 60 and 60D, which come installed with a 75kWh battery, but that is limited by software that makes only 60kWh available"   https://thedriven.io/2019/11/13/with-flick-of-switch-tesla-adds-more-battery-capacity-to-help-ev-owners-escape-bush-fires/   SEAT MII ELECTRIC SEAT starts its electric offensive with the introduction of the Mii electric. The new model is SEAT’s first all-electric production vehicle and lays the groundwork for future members to join the family. More EVs and PHEVs are due in the near future, including the allelectric SEAT el-Born, plug-in hybrid versions of the Tarraco and Leon, and high-performance plug-in hybrid versions of CUPRA Formentor and CUPRA Leon. The Home Charge option adds a charging cable to charge directly at home using a 2.3 kW system, while Fast brings CCS fast charging capability with a DC charging capacity of 40kW.   The all-electric city car is the first model to include SEAT CONNECT. The system gives remote access and management of the vehicle, so customers can review driving data, parking position, the vehicle’s status, including doors and lights, manage the charging process via the e-Manager and the ability to control air-conditioning remotely – an important technology when you’re faced with extremes in climate – all from a smartphone app.   From electrive: "Seat makes the affordability of the electric model a selling point: Mii costs around the same as a combustion engine car of comparable size and power, only with lower running costs  – and here Seat also refers to the significantly lower maintenance costs of electric vehicles. With regard to equipment, Seat has decided to keep the range simple: With the Mii electric and Mii electric Plus"   EMPLOYERS SHOULD SEE WORKPLACE CHARGING AS MORE THAN A PERK FOR ITS WORKERS "Workplace electric vehicle charging is often seen as an employment perk both by businesses and their (current or prospective) employees, but that strategy could be short-sighted. On-site electric chargers may actually be a boon for business, a report suggests, potentially bringing in customers and attracting a stable, engaged workforce." according to Green Car Reports: "The study, conducted by Wood Mackenzie (a subsidiary of data analytics firm Verisk), says that businesses underestimate the value of on-site electric chargers. Data suggest that not only might electric chargers attract customers, but the particular types of buyers they bring in are highly desirable."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125927_report-employers-should-see-workplace-charging-as-more-than-a-perk-for-its-workers   CHINA: 46.38 GWH OF EV BATTERIES DEPLOYED SO FAR THIS YEAR "The Chinese EV lithium-ion battery market grew so far this year to over 46 GWh, and close to 51% falls on CATL. BYD's share over 10 months is 20%, which together is almost 71%." reports InsideEVs: "Despite the YTD numbers being healthy, the past three months bring decline. Let's take a look at the details, provided by the Moneyball.   Top Chinese EV battery manufacturers by installed capacity (January-October):   CATL - 23.58  GWh (up 65%) BYD - 9.23 GWh (up 12%) Guoxuan - 2.37 GWh (up 43%) Lishen - 1.27 GWh (down 1%) CALB - 1.12 GWh (up 307%) Over ten months of 2019, some 46.38 GWh of batteries were deployed in New Energy Vehicles, which is 38% more than a year ago:   Passenger cars - 33.61 GWh (up 55%) Buses - 9.39 GWh (down 8%) SPV (other) - 3.39 GWh (up 19%)"   https://insideevs.com/news/381619/china-46-gwh-ev-batteries-deployed/   TESLA AUTOPILOT NEARS 2 BILLION MILES DRIVEN, FULL-SELF DRIVING CONTINUES TO IMPROVE "Tesla is yet to issue a formal announcement about its total Autopilot miles to date, though a model by MIT researcher Lex Fridman has predicted that the 2-billion-mile mark will be crossed sometime on November 11, 2019. That being said, Fridman’s model might even be a bit conservative, considering that Tesla’s fleet is growing by the day and more and more vehicles are traveling across the globe on Autopilot thanks to the Model 3 ramp." says Simon at Teslarati: "If Tesla does confirm Autopilot’s 2-billion-mile milestone, it would be a great accomplishment for the electric car maker. After all, it took 4 over four years for Tesla’s fleet of vehicles to reach 1 billion real-world miles on Autopilot. Provided that Lex Fridman’s estimates are accurate, Autopilot’s next billion miles seems to have taken less than a year to accomplish."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-autopilot-hits-2-billion-miles-full-self-driving/   NISSAN IS IN ABSOLUTE SHAMBLES From Forbes: "In Europe the Leaf also seems to be paying the price for being the pioneer overtaken by late-comers with better technology and sexier-looking models, said Berlin-based automotive analyst Matthias Schmidt. “The Leaf is in danger of being in the position of standing before the EV wall and assisting others over it, thanks to establishing the electric market early on with its first generation model, yet potentially finding it more of an effort to clear the wall itself once the other manufacturers have cleared it,” Schmidt said."   https://www.forbes.com/sites/neilwinton/2019/11/12/nissan-leaf-sales-falter-as-new-competitors-offer-better-technology-looks/#7aacee5f1a74   From Jalopnik: "Hot on the heels of Honda announcing sales down, Nissan laid out a historically bad report of profits being down an amazing 70 percent, the company’s worst outlook in 11 years, as the Japan Times reports: Nissan, whose financial performance has been in the doldrums for nearly two years, cut its forecast for operating profit to 150 billion in the year through March 2020, from a previous forecast of 230 billion. The new forecast means earnings for the full year will be at their worst in 11 years."   https://jalopnik.com/nissan-is-absolute-shambles-1839799530   SHELL FIXES FIRST EV CHARGING STATIONS IN U.S "Shell’s first electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the United States, has been installed at Boston Logan International Airport."   says PetrolWorld.com: "The 50-kW Veelfil-RT DC fast-charging stations were installed by Greenlots, a Los Angeles-based provider of EV charging and energy management software that was acquired by Shell in 2019, with the units manufactured by Tritium, an Australian firm. "   https://www.petrolworld.com/headlines/item/33599-netherlands-shell-fixes-first-ev-charging-stations-in-u-s   And from Fleet Europe: "Shell are extending their EV offer to our customers’ homes and workplaces.  The acquisition of NewMotion in Europe has enabled Shell to provide charging points to tens of thousands of homes and businesses and it is offering a similar proposition with Greenlots in the US. To help enable cheaper charging for their customers, Shell have also been piloting smart-charging technology in the UK and Germany that helps integrate EVs into the power grid at times when overall demand is at its lowest."   https://www.fleeteurope.com/en/new-energies/europe/features/transition-low-carbon-energy-shell-fleet-solutions?t%5B0%5D=Shell&t%5B1%5D=NewMotion&curl=1   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   If you had to pick ONE upside to driving an EV, what would be it be?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 254 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #589   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 23rd September 2019. 1ST CHINESE TESLA MODEL 3S FROM GIGAFACTORY 3 "A leaked photo posted by Vincent, Tesla tweeter extraordinaire, on September 23 shows a white Model 3 on the assembly line at Tesla Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China. A previous tweet by Vincent claimed that some people who have ordered a Model 3 in China have started receiving tutorials about the operation of their cars. Usually, those tutorials are sent out 4 to 6 weeks before delivery of the cars takes place." according to Steve Hanley at CleanTechnica: "According to Interesting Engineering, the leaked photo was attributed to Weibo user 常岩, who is the chief auto editor of Tencent Auto. Tencent is a giant Chinese tech firm that owns approximately 5% of Tesla. A subsequent tweet by Vincent said, “Rumor: Estimated that the first group of the Made in China Model 3 will be delivered in November.”   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/09/23/breaking-1st-chinese-tesla-model-3s-are-rolling-down-gigafactory-3-assembly-line/   VOLKSWAGEN LAUNCHES PILOT PRODUCTION AHEAD OF GIGAFACTORY "The Volkswagen-Northvolt cooperation is taking off as they launch a first pilot production for battery cells at Volkswagen’s Salzgitter plant. Production is to scale up to 16 GWh at the end of 2023 and Volkswagen is investing around one billion euros." reports electrive: "Volkswagen is aiming to independently produce its own battery cells in a joint venture with Northvolt, rather than having to rely on battery systems from suppliers. At the Salzgitter plant in Germany where TDI and TSI engines are now rolling off the assembly line, the Center of Excellence (CoE) is already established with an initial 300 employees." they say, in a Translation into English from original German article: "Volkswagen today opened a pilot production facility as part of said CoE with the goal of testing, development and small-series production of battery cells. For Frank Blome, head of the CoE for battery cells, the pilot plant is “an important step on our way to building the gigafactory”.   https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/23/volkswagen-to-build-a-gigafactory/   SWAGTRON’S $999 HIPSTER-SPEC ELECTRIC BIKE "Swagtron’s new EB12 electric bicycle is its first foray into full-sized commuter bikes. And while they didn’t quite hit the ball out of the park on their first try, they got it pretty darn close to the fence.   With a sleek design and an electric boost, the Swagtron EB12 could be the perfect option for cash-strapped students or budget-minded city commuters that want a good bike for an even better price." says Micah Toll for Electrek: "Swagtron is known for building the most affordable electric bicycles in the game. And their playbook isn’t to just pump out cheap crap like some other budget companies. Rather, they cut out all the fat – all the components that aren’t strictly necessary – so that they can focus on putting decent components on whatever is left. No one expects a Swagtron e-bike to get passed down to their son. But they do expect a decent quality e-bike for an unbelievable price. And that’s exactly what Swagtron has done – yet again – with the EB12 electric bicycle. It’s a hardy commuter e-bike that offers exactly zero fancy features other than that it will get you where you’re going and look good while doing it."   https://electrek.co/2019/09/23/review-swagtrons-999-hipster-spec-electric-bike-makes-a-great-city-e-bike/   FIAT CHRYSLER TO TEST VEHICLE-TO-GRID "Fiat Chrysler will set up an experimental fleet of up to 700 electric cars to test vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, which allows power grids to use energy stored in car batteries to face demand during peak hours." says Reuters: "FCA is taking its first steps into electric mobility as the Italian-American carmaker moves on from its failed $35 billion bid to merge with France’s Renault, a pioneer in electric vehicles. FCA on Thursday signed an agreement with Italy’s national grid operator Terna to jointly test a technology enabling electric vehicles to interact with the grid, through charging infrastructure. The project will include a feasibility study to launch an experimental demonstration fleet of cars connected to the grid via V2G infrastructure to be built in FCA’s Mirafioni plant in Turin, the two companies said in a statement."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-fiat-chrysler-electric/fiat-chrysler-to-test-vehicle-to-grid-technology-with-700-car-fleet-idUSKBN1W41KK   NEW ELECTRIC PANEL FROM SPAN STREAMLINES SOLAR+STORAGE INSTALLATIONS "A new technology company led by former Tesla engineers has just released a smart electric panel that enables customers to easily adopt solar, storage, EVs and other clean energy technologies. The Span electric panel will begin installation in select markets in California and Hawaii." reports Solar Power World Online: "The Span panel replaces a traditional electrical panel to become the primary energy and control hub for the home. It displaces the need for many disparate pieces of equipment to install solar, storage and electric vehicles today with a single, integrated device. The result is a faster, more cost effective installation for both new homes and retrofits that delivers unprecedented functionality to the customer. The Span panel offers customizable backup power, enabling customers to intelligently prioritize the available energy in their homes especially during power outages or blackouts. This, paired with the ability to monitor and control home energy from anywhere at anytime through the Span mobile app, substantially differentiates the product from anything on the market today. By incorporating key electrical components into a single device, the Span panel simplifies design and deployment for solar and storage installers as well as energy companies."   https://www.solarpowerworldonline.com/2019/09/new-electric-panel-from-span-streamlines-solarstorage-installations/   ROAMING PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN NEWMOTION AND CHARGEPOINT ANNOUNCED "Company car drivers and fleet managers will enjoy simplified charging of electric vehicles (EVs) thanks to a new roaming partnership between NewMotion and ChargePoint. The electric vehicle charging infrastructure providers have announced a roaming partnership that will allow fleet drivers access to both charging networks.'" reports Fleet News: "By the end of the year, NewMotion and ChargePoint customers will be able to access each network without needing to create a new account."   Sytse Zuidema, CEO of NewMotion, said: “This partnership is a big step forward for the UK’s public charging network and we hope to see a positive effect on the ease of use by EV drivers. We are pleased to offer our UK drivers additional access to ChargePoint, Inc’s network that includes a good few hundred rapid chargers. With this we’re able to expand our European charging network that already includes over 118,000 charge points.”   https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/latest-fleet-news/2019/09/20/roaming-partnership-between-newmotion-and-chargepoint-announced     QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   What do you want to hear on this podcast? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 20th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TOYOTA AND SUZUKI PARTNER ON HYBRIDS AND EVS Toyota and Suzuki on Wednesday said they planned to produce electric vehicles and compact cars for each other to better compete with fast-changing technologies in the global auto industry." According to Reuters today: "Suzuki will source gasoline hybrid systems for cars it sells worldwide from Toyota, which pioneered hybrid vehicles with the Prius more than 20 years ago, the companies said in a joint statement. The deepening partnership between the two automakers will enable cost-conscious Suzuki to tap into Toyota's R&D firepower to develop lower-emission vehicles and self-driving cars — areas which Suzuki has admitted it is struggling to keep up. The two automakers will deepen their cooperation in India, where Suzuki's hybrid vehicles will be made using engines and batteries locally produced by Toyota. They will also join forces in Europe, where Toyota will produce electric vehicles based on its RAV4 SUV crossover and Corolla wagon for Suzuki, while Suzuki will supply Toyota with gasoline engines for compact vehicle models sold in the region."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/20/toyota-suzuki-partner-on-hybrids-evs-building-cars-for-each-o/   HONDA LOGS 15,000 REGISTRATIONS OF INTEREST FOR ELECTRIC E PROTOTYPE "Earlier this month, Honda revealed that so far it received 15,000 registrations of interest for the Honda e Prototype. As the number comes from March 5, we guess it could be significantly higher after the Geneva Motor Show." reports InsideEVs.com today: "If the price is significantly higher than average for its subcompact segment (because of the premium interior and battery cost), we would not expect too high of a volume – especially in late 2019. For comparison, BMW is selling less than 37,000 i3 per year globally after a few years on the market and two range extensions.   co.uk, click Cars and then scroll down to Welcome To The Volt Age. "Say goodbye to the past. The next-generation electric car is coming. The new Honda e Prototype previews Honda’s new electric car, which will be available to reserve early in the summer 2019."   https://insideevs.com/honda-15000-honda-e-prototype/   HYUNDAI, KIA, OLA TO BUILD INDIA-SPECIFIC ELECTRIC VEHICLES "India-based Ola ― one of the world’s largest ride-hailing platforms ― announced a strategic partnership with Hyundai Motor Group focused on smart mobility solutions and electric vehicle development. The agreement will see the Hyundai, Kia and Ola extensively collaborate on developing unique fleet and mobility solutions." "Hyundai Motor Group expects to accelerate its transition from a ‘car manufacturer’ into a ‘Smart Mobility Solutions Provider’, as the partnership’s initiatives will allow it to engage in all aspects across the entire mobility value chain ― including vehicle production, fleet operation and mobility services."   https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/03/hyundai-kia-ola-to-build-india-specific-electric-vehicles/   JAGUAR LAND ROVER INSTALLS UK’S LARGEST WORK CHARGING STATION "Jaguar Land Rover Group has installed at its Gaydon engineering center the UK‘s largest smart charging station for employees. In total, 166 smart charging outlets – each 7 kW AC – are available and connected to the broader NewMotion charging network." Writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com today: "In the future, the facility will get even more charging stations in the visitors’ car park for guests. Jaguar Land Rover points out that EV owners, which are able to charge at work (only about 25% of all EV owners), on average are charging at work 40% of the time. At 7 kW, cars like Jaguar I-PACE can replenish up to 176 miles (283 km) of range within an eight-hour shift." JLR said: "The stations are cloud-connected and integrated with the NewMotion public charging network, so employees can charge at stations across Europe using a single card. Users can also monitor and track charging throughout the day with a smartphone app. The charge points will offer both financial and environmental benefits for PHEV and BEV drivers alike, while providing a convenient and sustainable solution for employees who can’t charge at home. Jaguar Land Rover sources 100 per cent renewable electricity – generated from natural resources including solar and wind energy – for its UK facilities, which will be used to power the infrastructure, providing carbon-free commuting to employees. Jaguar Land Rover’s electricity supply is backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO), meaning a proportion of EDF Energy’s renewable energy is ring-fenced for the company. In this case, the REGO scheme certifies that Jaguar Land Rover’s entire supply comes from renewable generation.”   https://insideevs.com/jaguar-land-rover-largest-work-charging-station/   TESLA MODEL 3 STANDARD RANGE VS. NISSAN LEAF PLUS: WHAT YOU GET FOR YOUR MONEY Green Car Reports says: "With the long-awaited release of the base, $35,000 Tesla Model 3 and the more expensive, longer-range Nissan Leaf Plus both arriving this month, the two have now converged—and functionally have more in common than their reputations might suggest." They conclude: "Surprisingly, given Tesla’s reputation for selling high-performance, high-lux machines, Tesla's advantage here is in base cars. If you want all the handy extra features (other than extra range), you can get them for a lot less in the Nissan Leaf Plus SL—especially while Nissan retains its full federal tax credit for the next several months."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1122172_tesla-model-3-standard-range-vs-nissan-leaf-plus-what-you-get-for-your-money   NIKOLA CAN ‘EASILY’ DO ALL-ELECTRIC TRUCKS LIKE TESLA SEMI "New Nikola Motor president Mark Russell recently provided some updates on the company’s efforts to establish its hydrogen refueling stations across the United States, as well as his thoughts about rivals like the Tesla Semi and other hybrid trucks like the modified Kenworth-Toyota T680 long-hauler that debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last January." Reports Teslarati today: "Speaking with trucking publication FreightWaves, Russell explained that the Tesla Semi would not be competing with its long-haul vehicles like the Nikola One, due to the Semi’s limited battery range. The Tesla Semi is offered at 300-mile and 500-mile variants, though Elon Musk has teased that improvements to the vehicle’s design will place the truck’s range closer to 600 miles per charge." Mark Russel said: "“Their truck is our truck with a bigger battery, and we can easily do that. It Nikola’s recent electric vehicle announcement is not as big a deal as people are making it out to be. It’s not a strategy shift. Our model is still attacking the long haul market. We will sell battery electric vehicles based on the same design, and they’ll be great vehicles for those applications. If Tesla can produce their truck and meet the specs, we’ll be competing with them in that market. Tesla doesn’t have anything to compete with us in long-haul"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-semi-rival-nikola-president-interview/   FORD INVESTS $850 MILLION TO PRODUCE NEXT-GEN ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN THE US And finally we turn to Electrek for news about Ford: "Ford has announced today new investments in its US facilities for future production of next-generation electric vehicles as well as Ford’s first autonomous vehicles. The Ford Mustang-inspired electric SUV...is going to be the automaker’s first real EV next year, but it will be manufactured in Mexico. Now the automaker also wants to bring some EV production to the US and it announced today that it will happen with a $850 million investment through 2023 at its Flat Rock (Mich.) Assembly Plant." Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s president, Global Operations, commented on the announcement: “We’ve taken a fresh look at the growth rates of electrified vehicles and know we need to protect additional production capacity given our accelerated plans for fully electric vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ANNO! JAGUAR I-PACE CAN CHARGE AT 100 KW AFTER UPDATE @FastNed: The Jaguar I-PACE will soon be able to take ~100 kW at our stations which have 175 kW fast chargers. The required software update should be available soon at Jaguar dealers. Good job @Jaguar! 100kW can be used up to 40%.   SHELL SAYS IT CAN BE WORLD'S TOP POWER PRODUCER AND PROFIT "Royal Dutch Shell Plc plans to become the world’s biggest power company within 15 years, a move that suggests it sees climate change as a bigger threat to its business than electricity’s historically weak returns." Reports Bloomberg today: "The world’s No. 2 oil explorer by market value is spending as much as $2 billion a year on its new-energies division, mainly to grow in a power sector it sees delivering 8 to 12 percent annual returns, according to Maarten Wetselaar, director of Shell’s integrated gas and new-energies unit. Shell’s acquisitions in power so far include U.K. electricity provider First Utility, car-charging operator NewMotion and a stake in U.S. solar company Silicon Ranch Corp. It has also announced it’s bidding for Dutch utility Eneco, which provides low-carbon power to industrial users and offers apps and other technology to manage electricity consumption."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-11/shell-says-it-can-be-world-s-top-power-producer-and-make-money   BILL FORD SAYS AUTOMAKER PAIRS WELL WITH VW: SHARED ELECTRIC CARS LIKELY “Bill Ford — chairman of Ford Motor Company and great-grandson of Henry Ford — has spoken out about the potential for a partnership with Volkswagen. He believes that the two companies are set up to succeed if a joint effort comes to be." Writes Steven Loveday for an InsideEVs.com article today: "Ford says that both automakers have full realization of the difficulties involved in moving to EVs and self-driving cars."   Bill Ford told Bloomberg: "We fit together geographically really well, product line-wise, we fit together well. We both came to the same realization that as big as our balance sheets are, no company can do this alone. I’d like Ford to be around another 100 years, and if that’s going to happen, it’s clear that we really have to branch off into new directions to try to solve some of these problems. It’s hard because our current business model is providing all the earnings and cash flow that fund a lot of this change. So we have to do both really well. If we don’t make great cars and trucks today that people want, guess what? There is no tomorrow."   https://insideevs.com/bill-ford-says-vw-shared-electric-cars-likely/   JAMES BOND TO DRIVE ELECTRIC ASTON MARTIN IN NEW MOVIE "next year’s 25th Bond film looks set to have Ian Fleming’s hero make his first concession to climate change, by driving an electric Aston Martin – albeit one which retails at £250,000." Reports the UK Guardian today: "the film – whose working title of Shatterhand was recently debunked – will see Daniel Craig’s 007 behind the wheel of an Aston Martin Rapide E, one of only 155 electric cars being built by the British manufacturer. Aston Martin’s relationship with the spy franchise began in 1964, when Sean Connery drove a DB5 sports car in Goldfinger."   https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/mar/13/james-bond-to-drive-electric-aston-martin-in-new-movie   ELON RETWEETS: "HOW DOES A TESLA MODEL 3 IMPACT YOUR ELECTRIC BILL?" "Who better than Engineering Explained to break down electricity costs for owning and EV like the Tesla Model 3? We’ve learned that one of the most common questions from potential EVs owners is: How much will my home electric bill go up from charging my EV?" Says Steven Loveday at InsideEVs.com: "In the end, when looking at more realistic gas prices, an EV like the Tesla Model 3 will save you a ton of money. The best part is, Engineering Explained provides a nice, easy equation so that you can run the comparisons yourself before you move forward."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-analysis-ev-cheap-drive/   NEWMOTION REACHES NETWORK OF MORE THAN 100,000 CHARGE POINTS NewMotion is the first in the industry to have reached more than 100,000 charge points in its roaming charging network in Europe. The company works together with over 200 roaming partners to build this extensive network of public charge points, allowing EV drivers to roam seamlessly across 28 countries in Europe. More than 170,000 registered NewMotion charge card holders are already enjoying the benefits of Europe’s largest roaming charging network. This charge card includes seamless international billing and settlement with specified VAT per country, allowing a transparent and easy EV charging experience across Europe for businesses and individuals.   https://electriccarsreport.com/2019/03/newmotion-reaches-major-milestone-with-network-of-more-than-100000-charge-points/   UK MOTORWAYS TO GET 50 NEW EV FAST CHARGERS "More than 50 new electric vehicle charging points will be built near Britain’s motorways and main roads as part of a £2.8 million deal." Writes James Fossdyke for InsideEVs.com today: "Highways England, the government-run company in charge of England’s strategic road network, awarded the contract jointly to BP Chargemaster and Swarco UK as part of its drive to promote the uptake of electric cars. The organisation wants to ensure that 95 percent of its network is within 20 miles of a charging point, in the hope that this will encourage more motorists to switch to electric power."   https://insideevs.com/uk-motorways-50-new-ev-fast-chargers/   2019 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR FINALISTS ANNOUNCED IN GENEVA The top 4 finalists for the 2019 World Car of the Year award have been announced at the Geneva Motor Show, where the Jaguar I-Pace grabbed the European Car Of The Year Award. A jury of 86 distinguished international automotive journalists selected the following “Top Three In The World” finalists by secret ballot based on their evaluation with each candidate as part of their professional work. The facility will get a new body shop with a total area of 75,500 square meters for the next-generation Macan, which will be manufactured from the beginning of the next decade."   Porsche says: "“The expansion project gives Porsche the option to produce fully electric vehicles on the existing production line in addition to petrol and hybrid models in the future. The first car to benefit from extended factory premises will be the next generation of the Macan: As a purely electrically powered vehicle based on the “Premium Platform Electric” (PPE) architecture, the new Macan will roll off the assembly line in Leipzig at the beginning of the next decade.”   https://insideevs.com/porsche-invest-to-produce-electric-macan/   TOYOTA IS LOSING THE ELECTRIC CAR RACE, SO IT PRETENDS HYBRIDS ARE BETTER "There are at least 12 car companies currently selling an all-electric vehicle in the United States, and Toyota isn’t one of them. Despite admitting recently that the Tesla Model 3 alone is responsible for half of Toyota’s customer defections in North America — as Prius drivers transition to all-electric — the company has been an outspoken laggard in the race to electrification." According to the deSmog website: "Last week, at the Geneva Auto Show, a Toyota executive provided a curious explanation for the company’s refusal to launch a single battery electric vehicle. As Car and Driver reported, Toyota claims that it is limited by battery production capacity and that “Toyota is able to produce enough batteries for 28,000 electric vehicles each year — or for 1.5 million hybrid cars.” In other words, because Toyota has neglected to invest in battery production, it can only produce enough batteries for a trivial number of all-electric vehicles."   https://www.desmogblog.com/2019/03/12/toyota-losing-electric-car-race-pretends-hybrids-better   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 4th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   Before we start The Fourth Of July. In the USA I hope you’re enjoying some well-deserved time off, an Independence Day holiday with family, friends and fireworks. Can I just say on behalf of everyone over here 242 years ago, sorry about all that, we had a habit of taking things. And by things I mean countries.   TESLA IS OFFICIALLY BRINGING MODEL 3 IN EUROPE FOR FIRST TIME AT THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED Fred at Electrek has AWESOME news for my UK listeners: "Tesla Model 3 has shown up in Europe in several unofficial events, but Tesla is now officially bringing the new electric car on the old continent for the first time this month." Early M3 are also being invited too join them. I'll see you there!   https://electrek.co/2018/07/03/tesla-model-3-official-europe-goodwood-festival-of-speed/     A SHOUTING ELON MUSK AND CHANGING RULES: INSIDE TELSA'S MODEL 3 SPRINT The reaction to Tesla's 5k model 3 achievement are coming in and CNBC goes for full drama: "A tense and short-tempered Chief Executive Elon Musk barked at engineers on the Fremont, California assembly line. Tesla pulled workers from other departments to keep pumping out the Model 3 electric sedans, disrupting production of the Model S and X lines. And weekend shifts were mandatory." They have a little more insight into those last few hours: "Leading up to Sunday morning's production milestone, Musk paced the Model 3 line, snapping at his engineers when the around-the-clock production slowed or stopped due to problems with robots, one worker said. Tesla built a new line in just two weeks in a huge tent outside the main factory, an unprecedented move in an industry that takes years to plan out its assembly lines, and said the tented production area accounted for 20 percent of the Model 3s produced last week." Tesla have made just shy of 50,000 Model S and X's in the first 6 months of a year they planned to produce 100,000. So all things being equal, no more no less, they'll do that too. "In the morning of Sunday, July 1, about five hours after the self-imposed second-quarter deadline had passed, the number 5,000 flashed on a countdown screen viewed by Tesla's Model 3 assembly-line workers. The Model 3 itself bore a "5,000" sign in its front window."   https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/03/shouting-elon-musk-changing-rules-inside-teslas-model-3-building-spr.html   HYUNDAI CONFIRMS HYBRID AND PHEV FOR NEW SANTA FE The Hyundai Santa Fe looks like it's electrifying for the next model. "Likely to arrive in 2020, the company confirmed their flagship SUV will receive a full array of hybrid powertrains, ranging from 48V mild hybrid, to hybrid and plug-in hybrid." says Jonathan Musk for fleetworld.co.uk: "Although there is little detail to go on for the hybrid and plug-in hybrid Santa Fe models, the mild hybrid variant will be the first to market, joining a powerful 48V system to a 2.0-litre diesel that can add torque to the engine thus improving efficiency."   https://fleetworld.co.uk/hyundai-confirms-hybrid-and-phev-for-new-santa-fe/   NISSAN'S E-POWER TECHNOLOGY IS ANNIHILATING THE TOYOTA PRIUS IN JAPAN There's a hybrid technology not so populate in USA and Europe but doing big business in Japan. There's an ICE but it's there as a generator and the battery always drives the wheels, but on the downside there's no plug socket, so you rely on gas to charge the battery. Is that an EV as fossils are the only fuel? Nissan call it an electrified vehicle because it's the same experience as an EV but with a much smaller 1.8kWh, and therefore lighter, plus cheaper battery. It's in the Nissan Note and soon the Serena family van. It can do just 1.7 miles before the battery expires. Seeking Alpha says: "Given its hybrid nature, environmental consciousness may somewhat hinder adoption of the e-Power technology in Europe and China but it's unclear how European and Chinese governments will react to Nissan's technology. we are taking for granted that California's ZEV Mandate provides a loophole for e-Power technology just as it does in the case of the range-extended version of the BMW i3." The note is already Japan's best-selling car with more buyers wanting e-power it's soon to dethrone the mighty Toyota Prius. Would you buy one? You'd still have to fill it up all the time. You do get more miles as it's technically more efficient to run the ICE as generator. Is this technology which is going to be outdated by the time battery prices drop?   https://seekingalpha.com/article/4185100-nissans-e-power-technology-annihilating-toyota-prius-japan-can-also-threat-tesla-lithium   VW ENDS GERMAN DIESEL FLEET RENEWAL SUBSIDIES "Volkswagen Group let its diesel fleet renewal program in Germany expire at the end of June, a company source said, deciding against extending it for a third time" reports AutoNews.com: "While some of the highest discounts were initially offered on cars equipped with alternative drivetrains such as full-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, over time VW Group focused its incentive more on replacing old diesels with new ones."   http://europe.autonews.com/article/20180703/ANE/180709926/vw-ends-german-diesel-fleet-renewal-subsidies   TOLL DISCOUNTS OFFER ONE MORE REASON TO GO ELECTRIC In Ireland, "Drivers of electric and plug-in hybrid cars will pay a reduced fee on toll roads across the country from today" says Michael Cogley for The Times: "Those driving full electric vehicles will only pay half the toll rate while those using plug-in hybrids will get a reduction of 25 per cent. Drivers of fully hybrid cars, which rely on petrol or diesel to generate their initial energy, will receive no saving under the scheme."   https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/toll-discounts-offer-one-more-reason-to-go-electric-vwfcc8p2n     AUSTRALIAN FAST-CHARGERS SMASH EV “RANGE ANXIETY” ON AUTOBAHN Yesterday I was bashing Australia a bit for not having more solar and using that to power EV's considering they have all the sunshine. So let me redress that with some praise. Sophie Vorrath at RenewEconomy: "Electric vehicle drivers on Germany’s Autobahn can now recharge their car batteries almost as fast as filling up a petrol tank, using Australian made technology. Brisbane based EV infrastructure company Tritium said on Tuesday it had exported and installed 12 of the most powerful electric car chargers on the market to a site in Germany" The IONITY project is installing 350kW charging goodness.   https://reneweconomy.com.au/australian-fast-chargers-smash-ev-range-anxiety-autobahn-38364/   SWEDENS JULY 1 STEEP VEHICLE TAX HIKE SPARKS LAST MINUTE JUNE CAR SALES FRENZY "Significant increases in annual vehicle taxes, particularly for vehicles with high CO2 emission came into effect July 1 this year. These tax hikes for higher polluting cars in particular were at the root of Junes car sales bonanza" says AID with a view to how it will affect EVs: "Perhaps most significant, the one-off subsidies for low-emission electric (BEV) and plug-in-hybrid cars have changed. In short, starting July 1 this year, buyers of new zero-emission BEVs will get a SEK60,000 (5,800) purchase bonus. The bonus is paid six months after first registrations."   http://www.eagleaid.com/AID-Newsletter-preorder-1813preview-a-Swedens-steep-vehicle-tax-hike-sparks-last-minute-June-car-sales-frenzy.htm   TOURIST TAX TO FUND ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS Mallorca is a beautiful island off the coast of Spain which Mrs Lee and I love to visit because of the sunshine and a chance to practice our terrible Spanish. But I never many see EVs. Now it turns out I may be helping pay for them! 500 rapid chargers will be installed using 10 million Euros of funds from tourists. A new policy will halt the sale of new diesel vehicles from 2025 and petrol fuelled cars from 2035 as the island moves to electric.   GRIDSERVE® ANNOUNCE UK-WIDE NETWORK OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE “FORECOURTS OF THE FUTURE” Here in the UK: "GRIDSERVE’s national network of Electric Forecourts™ will offer significantly more high power charging points than are currently available at most UK petrol stations, and a totally new customer-focused charging, retail and services offering". Toddington Harper, chief executive of GRIDSERVE, said: “Our plan is to deliver for electric vehicle charging what Amazon has done for shopping online – make it simple, price competitive, and a great customer experience”. The team is currently exploring relationships with landowners, developers, investors, EV manufacturers, fleet managers and retailers.   WHAT’S DRIVING OIL COMPANIES TO BUY ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING FIRMS? org has more thoughts on the recent purchase of Chargemaster by BP: "News of the Chargemaster acquisition comes less than a year after rival Shell shared plans to acquire NewMotion, a charging station company with more than 30,000 installations across 25 European countries. Other big oil and gas firms exploring alternative energy technologies include ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Saudi Aramco. Saudi Arabia’s largest commissioned solar power plant sits today in a parking lot at Aramco’s headquarters in Dhahran. And last year, it was reported that the national oil company was considering an investment of up to $5 billion in the renewable energy sector."     COMMUNITY New members of the EV gang on YouTube   You can listen to all previous 169 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Friday 29th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   BP TO BUY CHARGEMASTER, THE UK’S LARGEST ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING COMPANY And so the press release came through at 8am this morning, British Petroleum aka BP will buy Chargemaster plc, to become BP Chargemaster, just 10 years after it launched. All staff keep their jobs. The company with 6,500 charge points. There are 40,000 customers of the POLAR network, also owned by Chargemaster, and they pay a monthly subscription, get it as part of their home energy tariff or use it on a pay-as-you-go basis. BP said: "Combining BP's and Chargemaster's complementary expertise, experience and assets is an important step towards offering fast and ultra-fast charging at BP sites across the UK and to BP becoming the leading provider of energy to low carbon vehicles, on the road or at home." David Martell Chief Exec of Chargemaster said: "I am truly excited to lead the Chargemaster team into a new era backed by the strength and scale of BP, which will help us maintain our market-leading position and grow the national POLAR charging network to support the large range of exciting new electric vehicles that are coming to market in the next couple of years" Business Green: "The move follows rival Shell's acquisition last year of European EV charging network Newmotion and provides the latest evidence that leading oil majors are looking to diversify into clean technologies. BP customers in the UK can expect to access BP Chargemaster chargers on forecourts over the next 12 months." This is small change in the grand scheme of the oil industry. Business Green add "The deal is the latest major low carbon investment from the company, which earlier this year returned to the solar market with its $200m investment in PV developer Lightsource, of which the oil giant now owns a 43 per cent share." BP predicts there will be 12 million electric cars on Britain's roads by 2040, a marked increase from the 135,000 in use last year. This Is Money: "In October last year, BP's rival, Shell, snapped up Dutch-based NewMotion, which is the owner of one of Europe's biggest electric charging networks" Fred at Electrek's take was; "f you have a weird feeling about an oil company buying into EV technology and companies, it’s maybe because you remember that oil companies once bought and killed some EV tech. Chevron did it with the battery tech in the original Toyota RAV4 EV and there were a few other examples with electric motors in the 1990s. But I think I can safely say that it won’t be repeated. EVs have become so mainstream this time around that killing off a few startups wouldn’t have a major impact." The Independent looks to the future: "It also plans to roll out ultra-fast charging equipment, which will include 150kW rapid chargers, which will take just 10 minutes to give cars enough energy to drive 100 miles."   HYUNDAI KONA UK PRICES               PANASONIC FLAGS BATTERY SHORTAGES "A senior Panasonic Corp official on Thursday said a pickup in production of Tesla Inc’s Model 3 cars, after earlier delays, has resulted in occasional battery shortages." accordingt to news agency Reuters: "Panasonic currently produces battery cells for Tesla in Japan as well as at Tesla’s so-called Gigafactory in the U.S. state of Nevada, which Panasonic jointly operates. Panasonic sees batteries as central to its plan to boost automotive business revenue to 2.5 trillion yen by the year through March 2022 from 1.8 trillion yen ($16.3 billion) estimated for this financial year." Yoshio Ito head of Panasonic’s automotive business, said at the company’s general shareholders meeting: "“There has been a sharp improvement in production equipment and we are now occasionally having battery shortages. I wouldn’t say the delay (in Tesla’s Model 3 production) had no impact on our business, but we are in close communications with Tesla and working to steadily improve production"   BYD WANTS THE BATTERY CROWN And although Elon Musk has often talked about creating the worlds biggest building, "BYD Co. is building what would become the world’s largest vehicle-battery factory next year in an effort by the Chinese electric-car maker to increase capacity and help revive earnings growth." If not by floor space, then by capacity. com say: "The plant will have an annual capacity of 24 gigawatt-hours when it is fully in use in 2019, enough to equip 1.2 million BYD Tang electric cars, according to the manufacturer backed by Warren Buffett. BYD invested $1.5 billion in the factory, which will help meet the company’s plan to boost its battery-making capability almost fourfold by 2020."   CARE BY VOLVO SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE LAUNCHES " Care by Volvo subscription service is about to debut its most desirable vehicle, as the S60 T8 Polestar Engineered sedan will be available exclusively via the (iOS-only) app starting at noon ET today" reportrs Engadget: "Only 20 of the AWD cars are coming to the US, with upgraded plug-in hybrid powertrains capable of 415HP thanks to a finely tuned ECU, 19-inch rims, upgraded suspension and gold-painted Brembo brake calipers. With the service, the cars will cost $1,100 that covers the car plus accompanying insurance and maintenance. The only things you'll need to pay for otherwise are taxes/registration fees and gas/electricity."   REVEALED: 34,000 FINED LAST YEAR FOR NOT TAXING VEHICLES WHICH ARE FREE TO TAX "Drivers paid over £500,000 in fines last year for not applying to tax vehicles which cost nothing to tax, data obtained by MoneySavingExpert.com shows." "Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that between April 2017 and April 2018 the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) issued 34,012 penalties to the registered keepers of 'nil-rated' vehicles - vehicles which don't cost any money to tax." according to MoneySavingExpert.com Failure to register, even tho though it's registering to pay £0, could get you an £80 fine.   COMMUNITY MYEV.com – a new website from the team at InsideEVs. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 28th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   Follow Up: confirmation from Elon about Pickup Truck power outlets   TESLA IS BOOSTING MARGINS BY CUTTING PRICES There was a surprise reduction in some Model 3 specs yesterday. The dual motor option reduced from $5,000 to $4,000. And the base cost of the P3, the Performance model, came down from $78,000 to $64,000. They did it by making a chunk of things optional in one package of $5,000 - 20″ Performance Wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, carbon fiber rear spoiler, aluminium alloy pedals, and a top speed boost that enables the electric car to max out at 155 mph. There was some confusion over why they'd make the car available at a lower cost and let you spec UP in the configurator. I don't know why you'd be confused...have you bought a base model BMW? A base model Mercedes? No didn't think so. Even the smallest things are optional extras on those cars. The margins are in the options. com: "That Performance upgrade is almost all margin for Tesla - if the changes are anything like the Model S and Model X, they'll primarily be in the form of a slightly different drive unit with a larger inverter that can deliver power to the motors more quickly. But a lower entry price with fewer other frills is likely to result in a meaningfully higher take rate for the upgrade that translates into much higher margins on the Model 3. Customers still have the ability to price their Performance Model 3 even higher, with options like enhanced auto pilot, full self-driving and premium paint." White seats and premium paint choices are also optional at $1,500 each. The basic, 64k Model 3P, has 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds and 310-mile range. Do you agree? Is choice better? With much shorter wait times for the Performance versions, in the range of 2-4months, do you think the lower starting price get more people opting for it? Also - do you want a badge? Model 3 now gets it's own badge. However whereas with the S and X you knew the model by the size of the pack - starting out at 40 and ending up at 100, with the M3 they want to focus on range. Very much Apple's way of selling phones, they don't label according to processor speed! Dual Motor M3's will be badged accordingly, with the words Dual Motor in caps, and the Performance gets underlined.   ANOTHER INTERNAL TESLA EMAIL HINTS AT GOOD NEWS Electrek are reporting in an internal email from Elon to staff, saying that those analysts expecting a disappointing Q2 are in for a 'rude awakening'. In this case, I'll leave it to user Billy who said this in his comment: "f you follow Elon's Twitter, you can pick up on his mood pretty easily. He seems to be in high spirits and I think that is really good news. I'm expecting 1,000 DELIVERIES per day in July as they deliver stockpiled cars. They will prioritize Performance and AWD in Q3 which will push their revenue super high. As more people get their cars and show them off to friends more orders will be pouring in. It's a self licking ice cream cone and it is delicious!"   https://electrek.co/2018/06/27/elon-musk-tsla-tesla-model-3-delivery-numbers-internal-email/   SPY PHOTOGRAPHER CAPTURES HONDA PILOT PLUG-IN HYBRID "A shot by spy photographer Brian Williams in Automotive News (subscription required), shows an updated Honda Pilot with both a reconfigured fuel filler door, and a large, square opening on the front left fender, where automakers often put charge ports for electric cars." says Green Car Reports: "If the Pilot plug-in hybrid used the same pack as the Clarity, it could get between 30 and 35 miles of electric range, based on similar sized vehicles. Honda has been expanding installations of its two-motor hybrid system found in the Accord Hybrid, Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, and Insight, and the Pilot would likely use that system, according to Automotive News."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1117443_spy-photographers-capture-honda-pilot-plug-in-hybrid   GETTING CHEAPER TO DRIVE EVS "Recent fuel price rises have already had a significant impact on the day-to-day running costs of traditional vehicles in the UK. In comparison, NewMotion found that the Nissan Leaf, the UK’s most popular EV, can be fully charged for just £2.37, during the night when electricity is cheaper and has a range of 100 miles" says Electric Cars Reports: "This is supported by recent research from Bloomberg, which found that savings enjoyed by EVs will only increase over time. In particular, Bloomberg predicts that the cost of battery manufacturing will fall as demand continues to grow. By 2030 battery costs will only represent 18% of the entire manufacturing process, compared with 42% today"   https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/06/the-cost-of-car-ownership-is-shifting-in-favour-of-electric/   PIVOT POWER BATTERY PLANS EMERGE OUTSIDE SOUTHAMPTON Pivot Power made big headlines within they announced a 2GW nationwide network of battery storage for the UK, and excited EV drivers by saying their battery hubs would also include EV chargers. That makes sense, you can charge without drawing from the grid. Now plans are out for their first site - and it's not far from where I'm sitting now. it will be a 50MW site in Southampton which is a port in the south of the UK. If you've taken a large cruiseliner somewhere, it will have gone from Soton. The planning database for the council reveals the details but there's nothing yet about EV charging. They want to build it on National Grid land near an existing substation, which you would do for easy grid connection. It's just off the M27 for any of my UK listeners, with 25 batteries ready to provide frequency response in the same was an other battery systems like the Tesla battery packs in Australia, probably the most famous example. COO Matthew Boulton told Current± "“The battery is the first stage and it unlocks everything; without a battery project we don't have an EV project. A big battery next to a big substation is, we hope, a relatively uncontroversial development so we're keeping the first piece nice and well boundaried to get it through, In Southampton the National Grid land is there and from a lease point of view we can get cracking fairly quickly. [We want] to secure the battery and know it has approval before we also spend a lot of money on planning of EV hubs.” "We're not sticking 100 chargers in but the sites will have 100 car parking bays and we're taking enough power so that over time they can all have rapid chargers.” "Bolton added that the company wanted to “make a statement” with the number of chargers it will initially seek to install, with “closer to 50 than 10” charge points of various speeds planned in the short-term.These are expected to be located within 5km of the substation and battery in a convenient location for drivers. In the case of Southampton, there could be even less distance between the two owing to the projects close proximity to major roads and Southampton itself." Pivot Power’s chief technology officer Michael Clark will be speaking about the company’s plans, as well leading a wider discussion on powering the EV revolution, at next week’s EV Infrastructure Summit. Hosted by Current±’s publisher Solar Media, tickets are still available to attend the two-day conference on 3&4 July and can be purchased here: http://ev.solarenergyevents.com/ ...where you can also find a full programme and list of speakers.   NISSAN SYLPHY NOW AVAILABLE Mark Kane at InsideEVs: "Nissan announced that its first all-electric model under the Nissan brand in China – the Sylphy Zero Emission – is now available for order. It’s offered through Nissan’s joint venture subsidiary, Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company (Dongfeng Nissan)." "Nissan Sylphy Zero Emission specs: 38 kWh battery for 210 miles (338 km) of range 80 kW and 254 Nm electric motor (front-wheel drive) 0-50 km/h (31 mph) in 4.4 seconds 6 kW on-board charger DC fast charging (0-80%) in 45 minutes using 50 kW charger 144kmh/89 mph top speed   https://insideevs.com/nissan-sylphy-ev-is-now-available-for-order-in-china/   AB VOLVO: RENAULT TRUCKS UNVEILS ITS SECOND GENERATION OF ELECTRIC TRUCKS A press release dropped from Renault about their truck plans. To keep pace with the changing face of urban transport, Renault Trucks is launching its second generation of electric trucks. The Renault Trucks Z.E. line-up, consisting of the Renault Master Z.E (Sept 2018, 22kWh, 57kW motor, 225 N-m of torque), Renault Trucks D Z.E. (both with packs from 200-300kWh, 185kW motor, 425 N-m, 300km/186 real world range, ranging from 3.5 to 26 tonnes) and Renault Trucks D Wide Z.E. (200kWh pack, dual motor rating 370kW, 850 N-m 200km/124 real world miles). The latest technological advances have made electric trucks an economically viable alternative for hauliers, leading Renault Trucks to launch a complete Z.E. range. The specially designed 16 t version of the Renault Trucks D Z.E. is ideal for urban and controlled temperature deliveries. The Renault Trucks D Wide Z.E. will come in a 26 tonne version for efficient refuse collection. Both models will be manufactured at the Renault Trucks plant in Blainville-sur-Orne, Normandy, France in the second half of 2019. A medium-duty Renault Trucks Z.E. vehicle has an operating range of up to 300 km depending on usage and battery configuration. The battery pack is the most expensive item when buying an electric truck. Thanks to rapid DC charging, the Renault Trucks D Z.E. and Renault Trucks D Wide Z.E. lithium-ion batteries can be fully charged in as little as one to two hours. For overnight AC charging, the time to fully charge a 300-kWh battery is 12 hours.     COMMUNITY YT Comments       You can listen to all previous 163 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
