It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   THE EFFECT OF REDUCED INCENTIVES   "Martyn - can you recap all the price drops in the last two weeks since the UK grant was reduced?"   Hyundai Ioniq Electric - now £30,495 and £32,495 (I've seen advertised from £28k) Kona - starts at £27,895 for 39kWh battery and £32,495 for 64kWh battery Same for Kia eNiro - £28,845 for small battery and 32,445 for big battery Nissan we did yesterday, from £25,955 for 40kWh and £30,445 for 62kWh Vauxhall Mokka-e is £30,540 BMW i3 cut almost £6k down to £31,305, and i3s got £7.5k cut to £32,305 Citroen e-C4 from £30,895   Cars which weren’t reduced but in the same market: Skoda Enyaq from £31,245 Peugeot e-2008 from £29,000, e-208 from £25,770 3 from £29,996   TESLA CHAIR LAMENTS DIRTY DIESELS "Robyn Denholm, the Australian executive who is chair of global electric vehicle and battery storage leader Tesla, has lamented the dirty car fleets of her home country and in New Zealand, along with the death toll caused by dangerous vehicle pollution." reports thedriven.io: "In a video address to the NZ parliament, which is considering adopting a clean fuel target that would set a cap of 105 grams of Co2 per kilometre, Denholm said it was ironic how the two countries led the world in so many ways, including clean energy, but trailed so badly in clean road transport.  Denholm noted that Australia and New Zealand were blessed with “phenomenal” renewable energy resources, such as hydro and geothermal assets, as well as solar and wind. Denholm applauded the NZ Climate Change Commission proposal on clean car standards to target a reduction in average vehicle emissions to 105 grams per kilometer by 2025, down from its current average emissions of around 171g/km."   https://thedriven.io/2021/04/08/teslas-denholm-laments-dirty-car-fleets-in-nz-and-australia-and-pollution-death-toll/   TESLA CRITICIZES SLOW APPROVAL PROCESS FOR GERMAN FACTORY "Tesla Inc. has criticized German bureaucracy and the slow final approval process for its nearly completed factory just outside of Berlin. The U.S. automaker's first European car plant is scheduled to open in Gruenheide, Brandenburg, this summer. Tesla said it was "irritating" that 16 months following submission of its approval application, there is still no timetable for issuing a final permit, which is handled by the Brandenburg state’s environmental office." write Automotive News: "A Tesla statement, seen by the German Press Association, said the automaker wants to see a "fast track" process for environmentally friendly industrial and transportation projects, arguing the production of electric cars offsets the environment impact made by building the factory. The statement said the "most glaring problem" is that current procedures and laws treat projects that combat climate change and those that accelerate it as the same. The final approval needed from the state of Brandenburg to bring the factory online has been repeatedly delayed, most recently in March, when the deadline passed with no explanation."   https://www.autonews.com/manufacturing/tesla-criticizes-slow-approval-process-german-factory?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter   NORWAY ACHIEVED 85% EV SHARE LAST MONTH "Norway bought 8,624 new electric passenger cars in March 2021. Besides, there were 4,379 new plug-in hybrids. Norway’s most successful model across all drive types last month was the Tesla Model 3, with 2,169 new registrations." says electrive: "The electric car market share was 56 per cent in March. PHEVs had a market share of 28.6 per cent last month. The market share of pure combustion vehicles was 9.5 per cent, dropping into the single-digit percentage range for the first time. The rest of the top ten shows the strong role of BEVs: the VW ID.4 is already in third place with 856 units, followed by the Volvo XC40 with 791 vehicles (the Norwegian statistics do not differentiate here between the combustion engine, PHEV and BEV versions). The Nissan Leaf (637 units), Mercedes EQC (589 new registrations) and Audi e-tron (430 cars)"   https://www.electrive.com/2021/04/07/norway-registers-84-8-marketshare-of-plug-in-cars-in-march/   ID.4 TRIMS EXPANDED IN UK Following the introduction of the special First Edition, Volkswagen is today opening the order books for series-production versions of the new ID.4 electric SUV in the UK. The Volkswagen ID.4 Pro Performance will be available in Life, Family and Max specifications, starting at £41,570 RRP OTR and offering up to 323 miles range (WLTP combined). The three models are fitted with the same Pro Performance powertrain as the First Edition featuring a 77 kWh battery (net capacity) and 204 PS / 310 Nm electric motor. This powertrain underpins the ID.4 line-up, with the ID.4 Life Pro Performance predicted to be the top-selling version of the zero-emission SUV. The Pure models with a 52 kWh battery capacity will go on sale in the coming months. All three specifications support 125 kW rapid charging, which allows up to 199 miles of range in 30 minutes of charging.   ID.4 ARRIVES WITH TEARDOWN SPECIALIST SANDY MUNRO "The Volkswagen ID.4 is about to be analyzed by a man who has made a career out of tearing down and studying every little detail of vehicles from the world’s largest automakers. After his teardown of the Tesla Model 3 and the Model Y, Munro is now about to conduct a partial teardown of the Volkswagen ID.4, the first of the German automaker’s new breed of electric cars that are coming to the United States. " reports Teslarati: "The teardown expert also pointed out some of the ID.4’s rather questionable parts, such as its “Engine Start” button, which Munro noted is unnecessary and only adds cost to the all-electric crossover.  Also notable were Munro’s first impressions of the ID.4’s infotainment system, which he noted was less intuitive compared to the Model 3 and Model Y’s center touchscreen. That said, the auto veteran did note that for car buyers who are just transitioning from internal combustion cars to into electric vehicles, the ID. 4’s features and infotainment system would be just fine."   Sandy Munro: “I’m sure this would have been more intuitive for me before I was driving a Tesla. Now, it seems kind of awkward because almost everything on the Tesla’s right here, and you can get into the touchscreen much faster”   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-vs-vw-id4-sandy-munro-first-impressions-video/     NISSAN: 70% OF EUROPEAN DRIVERS WOULD CONSIDER EV "When asked if they would consider buying an electric vehicle as their next car, 70%1 of European drivers say they would. The most popular reason for drivers considering the change is the environmental benefits offered by a zero-emissions vehicle (49%1)." reports Automotive World: "The pan-European survey is Nissan’s most comprehensive investigation into the driving habits and charging experience of EV drivers to date. Dispelling many of the myths currently preventing drivers from making the switch, the research demonstrates there are good reasons to change to an EV. Nissan surveyed 7,000 motorists across Europe, split evenly between EV and ICE (internal combustion engine) motorists. Initial findings released today, uncovered that EV driver satisfaction is promisingly high, with 89%1 of EV drivers saying the switch to EV was the right decision. 74%1 feel more relaxed and 77%1 find it smoother to drive than an ICE vehicle."   https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/tipping-point-70-of-european-drivers-would-consider-an-electric-vehicle-as-their-next-car/   RENAULT TO DEBUT NEW SMALL ELECTRIC SUV "Renault will finally step into the electric SUV segment with their very own proposal that’s expected to be unveiled before the end of 2020. Following hot on the heels of the latest Zoe, as well as the City K-ZE (pictured here) that will arrive in Europe rebadged as a Dacia, this as of yet unnamed model is said to be based on the new CMF-EV platform that debuted in the Morphoz Concept, at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show, reports LArgus." says CarScoops: "Known internally as the BCB, it’s believed to be slightly bigger than the electric supermini, slotting just under the new Captur in terms of size."   https://www.carscoops.com/2020/04/renault-to-debut-new-small-electric-suv-for-europe-this-year-says-report/   CHARGEPOINT COOPERATES WITH TRUCK STOP CHAINS "Charging network ChargePoint and NATSO, a national trade association representing the truck stop and travel plaza industry, have announced significant progress in the first year of the National Highway Charging Collaborative, an initiative that plans to leverage $1 billion in public and private capital to deploy charging at more than 4,000 travel plazas and fuel stops serving highway travelers and rural communities nationwide by 2030." says ChargedEVs: "In its first year, the public-private collaborative funded more than 150 DC fast charging spots in at least eight states, including California, Florida, Iowa, Missouri and Washington. "   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/chargepoint-cooperates-with-truck-stop-chains-to-deploy-public-charging-across-the-us/   OCTOPUS EV PROMOTES SALARY SACRIFICE "Energy provider Octopus has launched a new leasing service – Electric Dreams – offering 100% electric car salary sacrifice schemes, to save employees thousands as they switch to clean green driving." writes Stephen at DriveEV.net: "Similar to the popular cycle-to-work scheme, employers can give their staff a highly valuable benefit that is also good for the planet. Drivers already signed up are saving an average of £14,445 over three years, by sacrificing some pre-tax salary in return for a brand new electric car."   https://driveev.net/2021/04/07/octopus-launches-electric-dreams-an-ev-leasing-company-unlocking-salary-sacrifice-for-businesses/   EV CHALLENGE TO DRIVE POLE TO POLE "British adventurer and Guinness World Record holder Chris Ramsey will become the first person to drive from Pole to Pole in a bid to raise awareness of climate change and the role that electric cars can play in reducing our carbon footprint." says The Herald in Scotland: "This will be the first time that any vehicle has driven from the South Pole to the magnetic North Pole, and Ramsey believes it is the ideal way to highlight just what electric vehicles are capable of – even in the most extreme climates. After nearly four years of planning, the Pole to Pole Expedition is scheduled to start in late 2022, covering 17,000 miles across 14 countries as the team make their way from the South Pole to the finish line at magnetic North."   https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/19214687.ramsey-will-become-first-person-drive-pole-pole/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM   What EV do you want to see your favourite car maker launch which they haven’t already?     It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSEV.CO.UK – FOR BUYING AND SELLING EVS IN THE UK (PREMIUM PARTNER) eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PREMIUM PARTNER)     DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY FROM MILLBROOK COTTAGES – 5* GOLD SELF CATERING COTTAGES (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER) IAIN SEAR (PARTNER)   ADRIAN BOND (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDY NANCARROW AND LILIAN KASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BLUNDERBUSS JONES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DC EV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ED CORTREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERIC HANSEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEINRICH LIESNER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAVIER CARMELO DÍAZ PÉREZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JOHN SCHROEDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHANIEL FREEDMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAYMOND ROWLEDGE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROBERT GRACE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J.  Show #830   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 6th July 2020. PSA: National Drive Electric Week, Sep 26-Oct 4, 2020, is a nationwide celebration to heighten awareness of today's widespread availability of plug-in vehicles and highlight the benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric cars, trucks, motorcycles, and more.   https://driveelectricweek.org/index   2021 HYUNDAI 45: NEW ELECTRIC CROSSOVER CAUGHT ON VIDEO "The 45, Hyundai's first bespoke electric car, has been filmed testing at the Nürburgring in preparation for an expected launch in 2021. The crossover SUV, set to rival the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E, was previewed with a bold, retro-styled concept at the Frankfurt motor show last September." reports Autocar.co.uk: "While it's still considered to be a crossover, we can also see that it remains low-slung, with far less ground clearance than a traditional SUV. The 45 concept's name references the number of years since the Korean maker’s first production car, the Pony. Hyundai also employs LEDs for the 45’s badging. Meanwhile, a charge indicator at the bottom of the doors allows the driver to quickly see how far they can drive before getting in. Technology developments showcased on the 45 concept include a camera monitoring system, which is said to leave room for “self-driving system applications”. As is common on concepts, cameras replace the side mirrors and are kept clean by a lens that rotates past a brush. Interior space is maximised by the batteries being set in a skateboard-style floor, allowing Hyundai to “create a space that feels like a living room with new pieces of furniture”. There’s lounge-style seating front and rear and the driver and front passenger get one unbroken footwell."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2021-hyundai-45-new-electric-crossover-caught-video   NIO SHARES RALLY 16% AFTER ELECTRIC-CAR COMPANY'S ABOVE-EXPECTATIONS SALES "Nio Inc. In reaching this milestone, WM Motor has become the first Chinese pure electric vehicle (EV) startup to have surpassed 30,000 sales of a single vehicle model.   OHIO ANNOUNCES STATEWIDE APPROACH TO ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING "DriveOhio, an initiative of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), has finalized a study to expand electric vehicles (EV) access throughout Ohio. The Electric Vehicle Charing Study is available at drive.ohio.gov." according to Richland Source: In the study, a new state-wide strategy is outlined, identifying key steps that are necessary for expanding Ohio’s EV impact. The strategy identified various sites needed to build EV-friendly corridors throughout the state. A key recommendation from the strategy is to have EV charging stations available and installed at least every 50 miles at strategic locations along interstate, state and US route corridors. The strategy also recognizes recent investments that automobile manufacturers are making in EV technology. Last week’s unveiling of the Lordstown Motors Endurance electric pickup-truck is an example here in Ohio."   https://www.richlandsource.com/news/ohio-announces-state-wide-approach-to-electric-vehicle-charging/article_d9599c54-bef9-11ea-90ff-7f742c78cd84.html   CHARGENOW REBRANDS: BMW CHARGING & MINI CHARGING "The ChargeNow charging service operated by Digital Charging Solutions for the BMW Group was renamed BMW Charging and Mini Charging respectively as of 1 July. Digital Charging Solutions (DCS) continues to operate the services." reports electrive: "All ChargeNow functions will continue to be available under the new brand names. Customers can continue to use their previous login to access their accounts. However, this only applies to BMW Charging, with Mini Charging the process is more complicated: According to the ChargeNow website, Mini drivers should log in to BMW Charging, cancel their existing contract and then re-register for Mini Charging."   JAGUAR LAND ROVER JOINS CAR SUBSCRIPTION CRAZE "Automakers including Porsche, Volvo, Mercedes Benz, Cadillac, BMW, and Nissan have begun trialing car subscription services. Instead of buying and owning a car the traditional way, subscribers pay a monthly fee to access a range of vehicles depending on their requirements." says CarBuzz: "Some have been more successful than others, however. Mercedes-Benz, for example, recently put the brakes on its Collection subscription service due to low demand. Now, Jaguar Land Rover is joining the car subscription craze with the launch of its new Pivotal subscription service. Subscribers will be able to change their car every six months to suit their lifestyles. A single monthly payment covers the rental cost, insurance, tax, servicing and repairs. Upgrading to the £1,150 ($1,437) Indigo tiers adds the Range Rover Velar, Land Rover Discovery, and Jaguar I-Pace."   1,500 miles per month driving allowance 3-month minimum initial commitment, after that you can pause your subscription at any time with 14 days notice Damage to vehicle incurs a £500 excess fee   https://carbuzz.com/news/jaguar-land-rover-joins-car-subscription-craze   https://www.drivepivotal.com/   WHAT CAR? LAUNCHES NEW ELECTRIC CAR AWARDS "The inaugural What Car? Electric Car Awards, which will be held in association with Myenergi, will take place in August, following an unprecedented rise in the interest in more environmentally-friendly cars among consumers during lockdown." says WhatCar: "The standalone event will name the best pure electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models in a variety of buyer-friendly categories, in order to support consumers who are looking to switch to an electrified vehicle. The best electric cars will be named in the following categories: Value car, Small car, Family car, Family SUV, Luxury SUV, Executive car, Performance car and Seven-seater. Show #749   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 15th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   COVID-19: FIRST CARMAKERS REOPEN FACTORIES IN EUROPE "Following the pandemic closure of production facilities around the globe, first carmakers are carefully reopening the plants to begin making cars and components again. We will update the electric vehicle-related reopenings continuously here." reports electrive: "Now that the Hyundai plant in Nošovice is going back to production, the European production of the Kona Electric can continue. This had only just started in March a few days before the shutdown, but the European arm of the South Korean company still managed to deliver the first vehicles."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/04/14/hyundai-and-audi-start-production-again/   MERCEDES EQE SPIED IN MOTION TESTING IN THE SNOW "A new spy video catches a fleet of Mercedes-Benz EQE electric sedans testing on a snowy road. Oddly, there's a Volvo leading the pack in some of the shots. " says Chris Bruce for Motor1.com: "These EQEs wear heavy camouflage, including many placeholder components on the body that further conceal the sedan's shape. In front, the EV wears a smooth nose that is a familiar feature from other vehicles in the EQ family like the EQC. There's a tiny vertical strip of camouflage on the headlights that make us wonder if the designers are considering a split layout like older examples of the E-Class. The EQE will reportedly feature a powertrain with an electric motor on each axle. They're combined output will be around 402 horsepower (300 kilowatts) and 564 pound-feet (765 Newton-meters). The batteries should offer upwards of 373 miles (600 kilometers) of range. The EQE will sit under the EQS in Mercedes forthcoming electric vehicle lineup."   https://www.motor1.com/news/409573/mercedes-benz-eqe-spy-video/   TESLA’S OCTOVALVE ENABLED A STAGGERING 10% INCREASE IN RANGE FOR THE MODEL Y "In their latest podcast, Third Row Tesla talked with Elon Musk and Sandy Munro about some of the innovations Tesla brought to bear in optimizing the design of the Tesla Model 3. " reports Kyle Field for Clean Technica: "To start things off, they dove into the new Octovalve in the Tesla Model Y that upgrades the heat pump in the Model Y to enable the larger, heavier vehicle to achieve a range that’s comparable to the Model 3. The improvements in the new heat pump in the Tesla Model Y translates to a staggering 10% improvement in efficiency. The result of Tesla’s efforts was a new valve system called the Octovalve that is paired with a completely redesigned heat pump."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/14/teslas-octovalve-enabled-a-staggering-10-increase-in-range-for-the-model-y/   HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC SALES UP ABOVE 5,000 PER MONTH AGAIN "In March, Hyundai managed to bring back its global plug-in electric car sales closer to its peak results - above 8,000 per month, including 5,000 Kona Electric.   According to the official stats, the company sold 8,079 units (up 0.1% year-over-year), which is 5.0% of total sales volume." according to InsideEVs: "Hyundai Kona Electric – 5,053 (1,391 in South Korea), Hyundai IONIQ Electric – 2,025, Hyundai IONIQ Plug-In – 1,011"   https://insideevs.com/news/409501/hyundai-kona-electric-sales-march-2020/   MINNESOTA, NEW MEXICO, AND OTHER STATES ARE POISED TO ADOPT CALIFORNIA ZEV RULES "Last month, Washington State became the 12th state to adopt California’s zero-emissions mandate. Next up: Minnesota and New Mexico, with Colorado and Ohio not far behind." says Bradley for Electrek: "That would make 13 states and counting that follow California clean-air rules for cars instead of the weakened standards rolled out by the Trump administration last month. The number could grow to 23 me-too ZEV states. That’s how many states in fall 2019 sued to block the Trump administration from undoing California’s authority to set strict car pollution rules. The entire balance of power regarding emissions rules is shifting before our eyes. The so-called California ZEV states could soon govern emissions rules for a bigger chunk of the American auto market than the EPA."   https://electrek.co/2020/04/13/minnesota-new-mexico-and-other-states-are-poised-to-adopt-california-zev-rules/   2019-2020 CHEVY BOLT EV RECALL: ROLLING DOWN THE REAR WINDOW COULD OPEN THE DOOR "General Motors has issued a recall for certain 2019 and 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV electric cars due to a very odd potential malfunction that could cause rear doors to open while driving.  Door-handle cables in the 897 affected vehicles may be too long, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall notice." says Green Car Reports: "When the rear window is opened, it may contact and damage the door-handle cable, according to the notice. If the cable is sufficiently damaged from repeated window opening, it may cause the door to open unexpectedly."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127802_2019-2020-chevy-bolt-ev-recall-rolling-down-the-rear-window-could-open-the-door   THE ELECTRIC MINI SE CRUSHES ITS EPA RANGE ESTIMATE IN OUR REAL-WORLD TEST Autoblog has been driving the Mini Electric, their reviewer says:" After 3 hours and 40 minutes, I roll into my driveway with 32 battery miles and 32% charge left over. The Mini SE’s trip odometer says I’ve driven 105.7 miles. Tack on the remaining miles and you get a final projected range of 137.7 miles. That’s 27.7 miles and 25.2% better than the EPA rating. Next morning, the range meter said once again that a full charge was good for no more than 110 miles."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/14/mini-se-electric-car-range-test/                   LUCID MOTORS’ EV FACTORY STARTS TO TAKE SHAPE "Four months after breaking ground, the Lucid Motors  factory in Arizona sits  — its new roof and sign emblazoned on its side— waiting for construction to resume." writes Tech Crunch: "The electric vehicle company released Tuesday new photos of the factory located off Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson. Construction was “well ahead of schedule” when Gov. Doug Ducey imposed a stay-at-home order due to COVID 19.  Despite the pause in construction, Lucid  Motors doesn’t expect a significant delay in its completion even with current events.  Tooling and machinery for the factory was “well underway” before the current crisis, according to the company.  Lucid Motors’ latest timeline was to start production of the Air, beginning in late 2020. In 2018, Lucid Motors secured $1 billion in funding from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. Lucid said at the time that the $1 billion in funding would be used to complete engineering development and testing of the Lucid Air, construct its factory in Arizona, begin the global rollout of its retail strategy starting in North America and enter production."   https://techcrunch.com/2020/04/14/lucid-motors-ev-factory-starts-to-take-shape/   CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN GIVES US A TASTE OF A FULLY ELECTRIC FUTURE "More people are considering switching to electric vehicles thanks to improved air conditions during the pandemic. With less air pollution being documented due to the COVID-19 lockdown, more people are realising the benefits of moving away from petrol and diesel cars according to a study by Venson Automotive Solutions." so says Euronews: "Of the participants surveyed by Venson, 45 per cent agreed that the vast improvement in air quality at the current time had made them reconsider owning an electric car (EV) in the future. Another 17 per cent said that it had reaffirmed their decision to buy an electric car.  The global pandemic has given us a taste of the future we could achieve if emissions targets were reached. Urban centres like New York have seen a “sharp reduction” in carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane emissions. With more than half of the world’s population in lockdown, the coronavirus lockdown has even cleared the air in India’s megacities where air pollution often reaches dangerously high levels."   https://www.euronews.com/living/2020/04/14/coronavirus-lockdown-gives-us-a-taste-of-a-fully-electric-vehicle-future     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   How can the EV industry help people get into driving electric cars as soon as this is all over?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 237 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #707   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 24th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   2 million downloads - did it last weekend!   WHEN RANGE ISN'T THE REAL RANGE "Tesla allows its owners to use more of the battery capacity by switching from its "Daily" driving setting to a special "Trip" setting, which is designed to provide maximum range. But the company has warned that using the function can cause battery degradation and that recharging the battery also could take longer." says Consumer Reports: " In the Trip driving setting, our Model 3 achieved 350 miles.  Models from Jaguar and Porsche actually do better in real-world driving than in the EPA tests. a Top Gear test in 2018 yielded 291 miles on a single charge for the I-Pace, about 24 percent better than the government estimate. Audi decided it was important to increase battery life while also delivering more consistent performance, company spokesman Mark Dahncke says. The fully charged Audi uses 88 percent of the battery’s capacity rather than 100 percent, he says. That limits range but makes the battery last longer.  Porsche spokesman Calvin Kim says Porsche’s cars are known for performance and on-road capability. Battery range isn’t as much a factor for consumers looking for a high-speed sports car."   From Tom at InsideEVs when he drove the Taycan Turbo driving from Atlanta, Georgia to Daytona Beach, Florida: "Even with the cold weather and rain, we averaged 2.96 miles per kWh over the 436-mile trip. If you multiply that consumption rate by the 83.7 usable capacity the Taycan Turbo has, you come up with 248-miles of range per charge. That's not bad, and much better than the EPA range rating of 201 miles per charge. Also notable is the fact that the EPA provided the range figures themselves, and that's not how it usually happens. Many people don't realize that the manufacturer does the range testing and provides the EPA with the range rating and the data to back it up. The EPA has the choice to accept that data and publish it, or to then do their own internal testing. In the case of the Taycan, the EPA decided to do their own range certification, and those numbers came out much lower than what Porsche expected. Porsche is developing an all-electric Boxster. While that model is thought to be based on either the Taycan’s PPE platform or an adapted version of the existing combustion engine platform, it’s possible the Stuttgart brand could make use of the MEB platform to create a sibling to the ID sports car."   The company’s motorsport director, Sven Smeets: "We are beginning to work on the first batteries for the performance road cars, using the dedicated team from the ID R, so there will be a direct link between them. The batteries start in the same area. Show #634   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 7th November 2019. PORSCHE IS SETTING UP ELECTRIC CAR INSURANCE FOR THE TAYCAN "With the launch of the Taycan, Porsche Financial Services is now offering not only established motor vehicle insurance but also a policy specially tailored to electric cars." reports electrive: "According to the press release, the new policy supplements the existing Porsche CarPolicy with, for example, special protection for the battery and charging station as well as mobility protection. Porsche did not give any information on the policy’s costs or detailed conditions in the press release."   “A highlight of ‘E-Cover’ is the original price protection for the battery in the event of damage. Extensive cyber protection is another innovative component of the product”.   https://www.electrive.com/2019/11/07/porsche-is-setting-up-electric-car-insurance-for-the-taycan/   MAERSK TO PILOT 600 KWH CONTAINERIZED BATTERY SYSTEM ON CONTAINER SHIP "A containerized 600 kWh marine battery system will be installed in a trial on board the Maersk Cape Town in December 2019 to improve vessel performance and reliability while reducing CO2 emissions." says Green Car Congress: "Propelling marine vessels with battery power alone is still years away from being a technically- and economically-viable option, Maersk says. However marine battery systems can be used to improve the efficiency of a vessel’s onboard electrical systems such as the Maersk Cape Town’s generators. By maintaining the vessel’s auxiliary generators at a more optimal load, and avoiding running generators when not needed, overall fuel consumption can be reduced."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/11/20191107-maersk.html   PRICES AND SPECS REVEALED FOR CITROËN C5 AIRCROSS HYBRID "Citroën has launched a plug-in hybrid version of its C5 Aircross SUV, bringing CO2 emissions of 39g/km and a 31-mile electric-only range to aid fleets looking to go greener." according to Fleetworld:" Priced from £35,340 and starting deliveries in mid-2020, the C5 Aircross Hybrid combines a PureTech 180hp petrol engine, a 109hp electric motor and an ë-EAT8 automatic gearbox. with a 100% electric range of up to 31 miles / 50km, The 13.2kWh battery is covered by an eight-year / 100,000 mile warranty to guarantee up to 70% of its charge capacity, and can be charged in less than two hours thanks to the standard 7.4KW on board charger."   https://fleetworld.co.uk/prices-and-specs-revealed-for-citroen-c5-aircross-hybrid/   DTM REVEALS A 1,000 HP CONCEPT FOR AN ALL-ELECTRIC RACING SERIES DTM—also known as Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters—has introduced a 1,000 horsepower concept of the future for what will inevitably be an all-electric (or an all-hydrogen) series. That’s a pretty massive upgrade from the series’ current 600 HP combustion engines." reports Jalopnik: "A press release makes it very clear that this newer, more eco-friendly series will run alongside DTM without actually replacing it just yet. DTM’s promoter ITR is pretty keen on keeping both series around as long as possible."   MERCEDES-BENZ CHIEF CONFIRMS ALL-ELECTRIC G-CLASS WAGON IN THE WORKS "Ola Källenius, chairman of Daimler and head of Mercedes-Benz, confirmed today that the company will produce an all-electric version of the iconic G-Class wagon." says Fred at Electrek: "The introduction of a G-Class wagon — rated at 14 miles per gallon — would transform one of Mercedes’ biggest gas guzzlers into a zero-emissions vehicle. Källenius mentioned that there had been discussions to eliminate the iconic model. Apparently, instead, it will be electrified."   https://electrek.co/2019/11/07/mercedes-benz-chief-confirms-all-electric-g-class-wagon-in-the-works/   ELECTRIFICATION FOR TRUCKING FROM TEVVA "On Wednesday, electric commercial vehicle pioneer Tevva unveiled its Electrify initiative, aiming to drive the electrification of medium-duty HGVs through the deployment of up to 50 electric trucks across the United Kingdom and Europe over the next six months." according to GreenBiz: "Tevva has developed a package of EV technologies tailored for HGV vehicles, including battery packs, fleet management systems and advanced cloud-based software that uses geofencing capabilities to autonomously control a range extender and ensure vehicles can switch to zero-emissions mode to optimize efficiency and minimize air pollution in built-up areas."   https://www.greenbiz.com/article/poo-and-power-electrification-and-manure-offer-competing-paths-decarbonize-hgvs     2020 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC RANGE BOOSTED TO 170 MILES FOR VERY EFFICIENT EV "The 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric gets a big range boost—up to 170 EPA-rated miles, according to results posted Tuesday by the federal agency." says Green Car Reports: "The pack goes up from 28 kwh in the 2019 model to about 38 kwh in the 2020 model.  EPA test info also confirm that the U.S.-spec Ioniq Electric will get the same motor upgrade given to versions in other markets—raising output to 134 hp (100 kw), from 118 hp (88 kw)."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125897_2020-hyundai-ioniq-electric-range-boosted-to-170-miles-for-very-efficient-ev   FORD MUSTANG-INSPIRED ELECTRIC CROSSOVER CAUGHT ALMOST CAMO FREE "The Ford Mustang-inspired electric SUV unveiling is scheduled for November 17, ahead of the LA Auto Show, but we already obtained photos of a barely disguised prototype." says InsideEVs: "It seems that the new long-range electric Ford is more like a crossover than an actual SUV. Size and shape probably will put it in the same segment as the Tesla Model Y."   https://insideevs.com/news/381083/ford-mustang-inspired-mach-e-bev/   FORMER DAIMLER CEO PRAISES TESLA, BUT SAYS GERMANS REMAIN PERMANENTLY AHEAD Former Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche recently shared his thoughts on the electric car revolution and the part played by American electric car maker Tesla. Now retired and without commitments to a specific automaker, Zetsche freely praised Elon Musk, stating that he adores the daring Tesla CEO." says Simon Alvarez at Teslarati: "Thus, despite his admiration for Elon Musk, Zetsche believes that established automakers will be permanently ahead. Volkswagen, BMW, and Daimler are all making big moves on electromobility."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-vs-daimler-electric-vehicle-race-dieter-zetsche/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   What do you prefer, the carrot or the stick? It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   2020 TESLA MODEL 3 SR+ IS THE MOST EFFICIENT EV EVER (BEATS IONIQ) "The 2020 Tesla Model 3 is the most efficient electric car ever, according to officially released EPA ratings. The Model 3 now beats the previous leader Hyundai IONIQ Electric (2017-2019) and its upcoming 2020 model year version, which actually has slightly higher energy consumption." says InsideEVs today: "First of all, the SR+ is rated for 250 miles (402 km) of range and efficiency of 239 Wh/mi (149 Wh/km), which includes charging losses. That's the best result ever in EPA stats (3.6% better than 2019 IONIQ and 5.5% better than 2020 IONIQ). The SR+ is also state-of-the art in the case of highway efficiency - 255 Wh/mi(158 Wh/km). The efficiency in the city is second only to the outgoing 2017-2019 Hyundai IONIQ Electric (by 1.3%)."   https://insideevs.com/news/381209/2020-tesla-model-3-sr-most-efficient/   FOR 2020, ALL TESLA MODEL 3 VERSIONS GET NEW EPA RATINGS And further to that story: "This week all Tesla Model 3 versions (those available currently and surprisingly also those not available anymore) received new 2020 EPA range/efficiency ratings. Surprisingly, the EPA website lists the 2020 Mid Range version, despite it not being available on the market. The numbers are the same as previously. Surprisingly, the EPA website also lists the 2020 Long Range (RWD) version, despite it's not being available on the market. While the efficiency is the same as previously, the range is 330 miles (531 km), 20 miles (32 km) above the 2019 rating. It proves that the rear-wheel-drive Model 3 (discontinued) was the longest-range Model 3."   AWD Long Range 322 miles / 518 km   Performance 299 miles / 481 km on 20" wheels   https://insideevs.com/news/381227/tesla-model-3-new-2020-epa-numbers/   BEST-EVER OCTOBER FOR BMW GROUP SALES "Sales of BMW Group electrified vehicles were up 8.6% to 14.182 units in October, due to availability of the new BMW 330e* and the BMW X5 xDrive45e*. The BMW i brand, with the BMW i3 and BMW i8, continued its positive sales trend over the course of the year, with an increase of +19.3% to 34,479 units." reports Automotive World: "Sales of the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4* Plug-in Hybrid climbed 30.1% in the first ten months of the year to reach a total of 13,274 units. With the launch of the BMW X3 as a plug-in hybrid* and the pure electric MINI Electric*, the BMW Group will be expanding its range of electrified vehicles to 12 models by the end of this year. The BMW Group intends to have one million electrified vehicles on the roads by the end of 2021. The company expects to have delivered a total of half a million fully-electric and plug-in hybrid BMW and MINI vehicles to customers by the end of this year."   https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/best-ever-october-for-bmw-group-sales/   GREEN LIGHT FOR THE "BIDIRECTIONAL CHARGING MANAGEMENT (BCM)" RESEARCH PROJECT. The newly launched Bidirectional Charging Management – BCM research project brings together companies and institutions from the automotive, energy and scientific sectors. The research project will run for three years under the aegis of the German Aerospace Centre and with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Testing of the first 50 BMW i3 cars equipped with bidirectional charging technology (i.e. that are capable of backfeeding) is expected to start under real-world everyday conditions in early 2021. This will create a platform for subsequently implementing the technology across the board and so integrate electric mobility into Germany’s power grid.   https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/article/detail/T0302526EN/green-light-for-the-bidirectional-charging-management-bcm-research-project   FIRST 100% ELECTRIC PASSENGER BOAT FITTED WITH SECOND LIFE BATTERIES Today, Seine Alliance unveils the Black Swan, the first electric boat specifically designed for private or business cruises on the Seine to be fitted with second life batteries. The aim of Seine Alliance and its partners - Groupe Renault and Green-Vision - is to be able to demonstrate the effectiveness of a model based on the principle of the circular economy, in order to reproduce it and create synergies between the various mobility players. The Black Swan, a zero-emissions* boat with a capacity of 2 to 8 people for family excursions of around 2 hours, has been designed in this spirit. It is powered by two electric motors and needs no generator or back-up internal combustion engine. So, it won’t emit any exhaust gases and proceeds noiselessly. Lithium-ion batteries taken from Renault electric vehicles once they have reached the end of their "first car life” are being re-conditioned and re-purposed. They are then installed beneath the boat’s side bench seats in 4 battery stainless steel housings that have been specially designed to ensure safe, water-tight operating conditions. Thus, the energy and raw materials required to produce new batteries has been avoided.   https://media.group.renault.com/global/en-gb/groupe-renault/media/pressreleases/21235734/le-black-swan-premier-bateau-a-passagers-equipe-de-batteries-de-seconde-vie-et-100-electrique-a-pari   GE SIGNS 715 MEGAWATT WIND DEAL IN CHINA "This week, GE began testing its first Haliade-X 12 megawatt offshore wind turbine. It also signed a deal to supply the turbines for a 715 megawatt (MW) wind farm in China’s Henan Province." says CleanTechnica: "GE Renewable Energy and China Huaneng Group signed an agreement this week at the China International Import Expo to build a 715 MW wind farm in Puyang, Henan Province, China.  GE will provide 286 of its 2.5-132 turbines with 130-meter soft steel towers for the wind farm. These turbines were designed specifically for the unique low wind speed needs in Henan province and will be manufactured by GE in China. Show #461   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 2nd May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC WITH UPGRADED 38.3-KWH BATTERY "The new Hyundai IONIQ family is finally unveiled with updated hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric versions. Let’s see some highlights about the one that matters, the electric. I really like the new Hyundai IONIQ Electric and I think that more range with a lower charging rate at DC fast chargers is a good trade-off, especially considering that the on-board charger was upgraded. Higher range gives us more freedom to avoid expensive and overcrowded DC fast chargers and charge at home – where charging is more convenient and a lot cheaper." says Pedro at PushEVs.   "The new IONIQ Electric’s battery has been upgraded from 28 kWh to 38.3 kWh, meaning drivers can go even further between charges. It boasts 36% additional energy storage capacity, offering a total of 294 kms of range (internal target under WLTP regulations). Its e-motor delivers a maximum power of 136 PS and 295 Nm of torque and is fitted standard with a 7.2-kW on-board charger – an upgrade from current 6.6-kW – for Type 2 AC charging. Using a 100-kW fast-charging station, the battery can reach 80% charge in as little as 54 minutes. As well as the new convenience features, the new IONIQ’s reimagined interior incorporates new design factors to enhance its sophisticated image. In addition to standard black seat trims, customers have the option of four leather seat colours: Black, Gray two-tone, Red Umber (exclusive for hybrid and plug-in) and Electric Shadow (exclusive to electric version). Meanwhile, the dashboard garnish arrives in Dark Chrome Accent."   "The new IONIQ’s leading safety package includes Front Collision Warning and Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection with new Cyclist Detection ability and Driver Attention Warning. Lane Keeping Assist and High Beam Assist also come standard. Optionally available as well are Lane Following Assist which keeps the car in the middle of a lane so drivers can navigate safely even in heavy traffic during rush hour, and Intelligent Speed Limit Warning that uses the front camera and information from the navigation system to identify road speed signs and displays the speed limit and no-passing signs in real time. Using the radar sensor to detect the distance from the car in front, Smart Cruise Control with Stop&Go and Leading Vehicle Departure Alert maintains a preset distance to automatically stop and depart again according to traffic conditions. Additional options include Blind-Spot Collision Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning. Taking a cue from its similarly innovative Kona Electric sibling, as a maximum use of regenerative braking technology, the new IONIQ Electric adopts 1-pedal driving capability, which allows drivers to stop the car by simply holding onto the left paddle shift lever with often no need to engage the braking pedal. Working thus via Smart Regenerative Braking, the level of energy recuperation is automatically adjusted depending on the road incline and traffic situation in front when coasting. The new IONIQ Electric also features Eco+, which supplements the standard Eco, Comfort and Sport driving modes. By selecting the Eco+ mode, drivers reduce their energy consumption and the car’s remaining energy can be extended during unforeseeable emergency situations."   https://pushevs.com/2019/05/02/new-hyundai-ioniq-family/   TESLA IS NOT ALLOWING RANGE UPGRADE ON NEW 150 KM MODEL 3 IN CANADA "Tesla launched a new, cheaper Model 3 with 150km range in Canada to get access to the new $5,000 federal incentive, but we’re now learning that the company is not offering any range upgrade on that new version of the Model 3 — effectively making the vehicle unsellable." says Fred at Electrek.   “To be eligible for incentives, a vehicle must have a base-model manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $45,000 for passenger vehicles with six or fewer seats, and less than $55,000 for vehicles with seven or more seats. For eligible vehicles with six or fewer seats, higher priced versions (trims) are eligible as long as the final manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $55,000 or less.”   "It disqualified Tesla’s vehicles from being eligible to the incentive because the base Model 3, which is only available as an “off-the-menu item”, starts at $47,000. In response earlier this week, Tesla has lowered the price of the vehicle to $44,999 in Canada, but it also software-locked the vehicle to only 150 km (93 miles) of range. Tesla has done that in the past, but the automaker offered to unlock the range as an option for a cost similar to the original cost before the range decrease. Buyers in Canada reached out to us saying that Tesla salespeople were saying that they were not aware of any such upgrade in this case. We contacted a Tesla spokesperson about the situation and the automaker confirmed that they are not offering any range upgrade through a software update for the base version at $45,000."   https://electrek.co/2019/05/02/tesla-model-3-range-upgrade-canada/   TESLA SEEKS CAPITAL RAISE OF OVER $2 BILLION "Tesla Inc will raise up to $2.3 billion in new capital, renouncing what Elon Musk called a “Spartan diet” and easing Wall Street concerns about the money-losing company’s ability to overcome a drop in sales and build new product lines." reports Reuters: "Before Tesla’s announcement on Thursday, however, analysts speculating about a capital raise had cautioned that the company had missed optimal timing - last year’s third quarter, when the company posted a profit. Tesla has reported four profitable quarters since it went public in June 2010."   "Tesla needs some $2 billion of additional capital to finance its expansions after the huge $700 million in losses in the first quarter. Funds will be raised in two ways: issues of new shares - up to $650 million (+15% option for underwriters) issues of new debt - up to $1,350 million (+ 15% option for underwriters) Total up to $2 billion ($2.3 billion including 15% option for underwriters)"   "Tesla has 2.2 billion of cash and equivalent, which is great but not enough to continue rapid expansion. Besides the new Gigafactory 3 in China, the company needs to launch the Model Y and more products after that. Capital expenditures plan is:   2019: $2-2.5 billion 2020: $2.5-3 billion 2021: $2.5-3 billion"   THE E-GOLF. ZERO EMISSION AND NOW 0% PCP "Volkswagen’s e-Golf is now available, for a limited period only, with 0% PCP Finance, making this car more affordable and more accessible than ever before. Plus, customers wishing to move into the new Volkswagen ID. will be able to do so easily, thanks to a special new 2-year PCP solution." reports The Avondhu: "The e-Golf starts from €35,995 after Government incentives and now with 0% PCP starts from as little as €349 per month. The e-Golf Executive Edition offers the ‘ultimate e-Golf’ and costs from €39,495 or with 0% PCP from as little as €379 per month."   https://avondhupress.ie/the-e-golf-zero-emission-and-now-0-pcp/   NISSAN BUMPS UP LEAF BASE PRICE IN UK "Despite competing in a tough new car market, Nissan thinks it deserves to give its still-fresh Leaf a price hike in the UK. A Nissan official told Autocar this week the price change is due to, "market demands and other influences, such as inflation and cost base." Considering the company's Sunderland plant supplies the Leaf to the UK and surrounding countries, those "other influences" sound like they could be related to uncertainty of Britain's exit from the European Union – and uncertainty as to how long the " according to Za at InsideEVs.com: "The Leaf's base price jumps to £27,995, up £1,805, even after the government subsidy of £3,500. That's in a class that includes the likes of the Volkswagen e-Golf and Hyundai Ioniq Electric, and it's for the base model rated at 168 miles of range in the UK. However, the Leaf e+ (Leaf Plus in the U.S.) is now in full production for the UK and boasts much more standard equipment and 239 miles of range, which is more competitive with the likes of the Kia e-Niro."   WILLIAMS ADVANCED ENGINEERING TO DESIGN AND SUPPLY BESPOKE BATTERIES FOR EXTREME E Extreme E announced Wednesday a new partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering, to supply batteries for the newly-launched electric SUV off-road racing series – set to commence on its first voyage in January 2021. The batteries will be specially-designed and developed by Williams, plugging into the expertise and experience of the same minds who assembled the batteries and cells for the first four seasons of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. Made to withstand extreme environments, conditions and terrains, the batteries will be compatible with Formula E-specification motors and produce a maximum power output of 470 kW (equivalent to approx. 630 bhp). Williams will put batteries into production, ready to provide teams with identical 54 kWh battery packs – to be used in the first two seasons of Extreme E.   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Hello to three new Patreon supporters. PRODUCER IAN GRIFFITHS, and EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS NATHAN GORE-BROWN and RALPH JENSON   CANADA ANNOUNCES NEW $5,000 INCENTIVE FOR ELECTRIC CARS "As part of its new budget, the Canadian federal government has announced a new $5,000 incentive for electric cars that cost less than $45,000, however, it excludes Tesla vehicles." Says Fred at Electrek today: "Some Canadian provinces already have EV incentive programs but unlike the US, there has never been a federal program to reduce the cost of electric vehicles. With the launch of their latest budget, the Canadian government has now announced a new $5,000 incentive program that is not yet completed. The $45,000 cut off point covers vehicles like the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt EV, and Hyundai Ioniq Electric, but all of Tesla’s vehicles are excluded since the base Model 3 starts at $47,000 CAD." The budget says: "“To encourage more Canadians to buy zero-emission vehicles, Budget 2019 proposes to provide $300 million over three years, starting in 2019–20, to Transport Canada to introduce a new federal purchase incentive of up to $5,000 for electric battery or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $45,000. Program details to follow.”"   https://electrek.co/2019/03/19/canada-incentive-electric-cars-tesla-excluded/   BMW INEXT PRODUCTION SUV SPIED PLAYING IN THE SNOW com are delighted to get a long video of the new electric BMW: "Our spies were once again in the right place at the right time and had the chance to film the production version of BMW’s iNext electric SUV testing under heavy winter conditions in Sweden. This 5:47-minute video gives us a pretty good look at the vehicle’s dynamics with plenty of accelerations and even some high-speed cornering maneuvers." "The iNext, which might end up being called the i5, will be the electric equivalent of today’s BMW X5 in terms of its dimensions. It will be the Bavarian brand’s most technologically advanced vehicle when it debuts in 2021. Before it, the company will launch the iX3 and i4, in 2019 and 2020 respectively.   https://www.motor1.com/news/314022/bmw-inext-spied-video/   GERMANY IS BIGGEST ELECTRIC CAR MARKET IN EUROPE SO FAR IN 2019 "Sales reports for the first two months of 2019 shows that Germany is now the biggest market for all-electric cars in Europe, dethroning Norway." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEV: "It had to happen at some point anyway, as Norway is so much smaller than Germany in population. Norway – at best – can double its BEV sales, reaching 100% BEV market share, while Germany can increase 50-times from less than 2% share to 100%." According to data compiled by industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de) the top 5 countries in Europe ranked by electric car sales for 2019 so far are:   Germany – ≈9,300 Norway – ≈7,900 France – ≈5,900 Netherlands – ≈4,600 UK – ≈2,100   https://insideevs.com/germany-biggest-ev-market-europe/   VOLKSWAGEN THREATENS TO LEAVE GERMANY’S CAR LOBBY VDA IN SPAT OVER E-CARS German carmaker Volkswagen has threatened to quit the country’s influential carmaker lobby group VDA as a dispute over the national car industry’s approach to managing the transition in the transport sector towards low-carbon technologies escalates, the newspaper Welt am Sonntag reports. According to the article, Volkswagen wants the lobby group to budge from its rigid insistence on “technological openness” in the transition and to fully focus instead on electric vehicles. According to cleanenergywire.org: "Volkswagen last week announced it would further accelerate its already ambitious rollout plans for electric mobility. The company that still grapples with the fallout of the dieselgate scandal over manipulated emissions values plans to produce more than 20 million e-cars in the next decade and become fully CO2-neutral by 2050. "   https://www.cleanenergywire.org/news/volkswagen-threatens-leave-germanys-car-lobby-vda-spat-over-e-cars   Penske Tests Fuso eCanter Electric Truck In California "Daimler delivered the first Fuso eCanter electric truck to Penske Truck Leasing for urban delivery in California." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs today: "In December, Penske received also the first out of ten Freightliner eM2s for testing and is waiting for the 10 Freightliner eCascadia heavy-duty trucks. All the vehicles are to be evaluated in real-world service by various companies to prepare for truck electrification."   https://insideevs.com/penske-truck-fuso-ecanter-electric-truck/   CHINA'S EVERGRANDE SAYS IT WILL START MAKING ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN JUNE "Chinese property firm Evergrande Group will start producing its first electric vehicles in June as part of a goal to become the world's largest new energy vehicle (NEV) company within the next three to five years, according to its chairman." Says a Reuters report today: "Hui Ka Yan made the comments at a conference in the eastern city of Tianjin over the weekend, according to a statement published on the company's website on Tuesday. He also said that Evergrande plans to start selling its first electric vehicle model globally "soon," which will use electric car production technology from Swedish car makers Saab and Koenigsegg, and drive systems from Netherlands' e-Traction, according to the statement."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/19/china-evergrande-ev-production/   AUDI Q2 E-TRON ELECTRIC CAR CAUGHT TESTING IN THE SNOW "New spy shots provide the very first look at the Audi Q2 E-Tron, which is the fully electric version of the brand’s compact crossover. This one wears some snow as extra concealment, but the images still provide an excellent look at the upcoming EV." According to Chris Bruce for InsideEVs.com today: "Powertrain specs for the electric model are a complete mystery at this point. Speculation indicates the company is aiming for at least a 310-mile (500-kilometer) range on a charge. A recent report suggests that Audi might only sell the Q2 E-Tron in China, and the company might make a long-wheelbase L model exclusively for that market, too."   https://insideevs.com/audi-q2-e-tron-electric-car-spy-photo/   LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND INFORMATION IS PREVENTING MOTORISTS FROM TAKING THE EV PLUNGE Conflicting and confusing information on the latest generation of battery electric vehicles has created a ‘knowledge gap’ for potential buyers, holding them back from choosing an EV as their next purchase, a new White Paper from the UK’s leading consumer champion and new car buying platform, What Car? has found. This is despite 2019 being set to become the year of the electric vehicle, with up to 20 new models scheduled to be launched. Meanwhile, whatcar.com traffic data suggests public interest in EVs is at record levels. In a study of over 9000 motorists, What Car? found 8.4% are already considering a fully electric car as their next vehicle. The What Car? What Fuel? comparison tool, with 80,000 users, also found EVs are already an optimal choice for one in 10 drivers. In comparison, the UK market share of fully electric vehicles was only 0.7% in 2018, meaning electric vehicle sales are achieving just 7% of their sales potential.   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Hello and welcome to the Monday 18th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   A TALE OF TWO HYBRIDS This weekend marked a lot of TV watching for me - the 24 hours of Le Mans. I know, dirty noisy polluting but if there was an electric version of the series of course I'd watch it instead. But well done to Toyota and the number 8 car of Fernando Alonso who won. And well done to Toyota for winning with a hybrid. There's 500hp from the combustion engine but 500hp from the electric powertrain, which gives it 4 wheel drive too, using a High-powered lithium-ion battery The second Hybrid I’ve been watching Fully Charged, and Jonny Smith goes for a smooth ride in a Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. There is so much tech in the Porsche, but we're interested in the 14.1kWh battery. 4 hours to charge on a 3.6kW and 2.4hours on a 7.2kW charger. It is unashamedly a big nasty petrol car which is all about speed and noise but i love that Fully Charged featured it. Because hybrids will be a stepping stone for so many buyers. But as you can drive on EV power alone it won't be long before owners will want a full BEV.   ARE TESLA USING A TENT? DOES IT MATTER? After reporting the new yesterday that Tesla have built a third general assembly Model 3 line in just three weeks, as Elon tweeted around the time i record the show, after that a lot of comment surfaced online about WHERE the line was built. Namely - a tent. Not just any tent, this is a luxury tent. But this is California, you don't have to account for the 6 inches of snow we had here a couple of months ago. In particular this year has seen, at least to my eyes, more pure hatred for Tesla and Elon than I've ever seen. It seems you can't be an impartial observer, you've either drunk the koolaid or you want to see Tesla go bust and for their cars to all burn in hell. Of course the truth is they make great cars and yes, they'll make mistakes along the way which we need to hold them accountable for in the right way.   EVEN TRUMP FANS CAN'T IGNORE EVS  There was a great article over the weekend about EVs and politics on ThinkProgress. The problem is the typical people who feel like they SHOULD turning their noses up at the liberal, snowflakes who are buying electric cars, are really annoyed they're cheaper to run. And also that you can charge them from your solar panels, which is the ultimate sign of sticking it to the big government who want to keep you under the control of big power companies. "the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reported that it is much cheaper to drive an electric car any distance than it is to drive a comparable car fuelled by gasoline. The DOE says “The average fuel cost savings for all states was 60%.” But, in reality, the savings are going to be much, much larger — probably 80 percent or more. As solar gets even cheaper — and penetrates more of the market — many places will end up with a lot of excess low-cost carbon-free power during the day." So whatever your politics, whether it's on the left or right, the socialists who care for each other and the environment, or the capitalists who want the best deal, it doesn't need to be politicised. EVs make sense for everyone.   CHEAPEST EV GETS A RANGE BUMP The Worlds cheapest EV is considered to the be Chinese SAIC Baojun E100, which would cost the equivalent of $7,300 if you could buy it in the US, after subsidies. But alas it's for Chinese buyers only. Now Baojun E100 on a single charge can drive up to 200 kilometers – about 50 miles more than before. The new figure compares with the reserve of electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric and BMW i3. But then again it's for two doors, a top speed of 62mph and a 40hp motor.   SHENZHEN EMBRACES ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Shenzhen, once known for spewing out dark clouds of toxic smoke, has done much to clean up and transformed into China’s most sustainable city, according to several research reports. In less than a decade, Shenzhen has reduced its average air pollution by around 50 per cent, according to city authorities." According to a report on SCMP.com "Shenzhen has made global headlines for being the first major city in the world to roll out an all-electric public bus fleet. In 2009, it was chosen as one of 13 Chinese cities to pilot a national new-energy vehicle programme. Today, the city has three times more electric buses than the entire fleet of all buses in New York, and nearly eight times the total of Los Angeles. Lau says the e-bus fleet is not just good for air quality, it represents the city being at the forefront of green novelty." They continue: "The city’s electric taxi fleet is substantial as well. Standing by a crossing in central Shenzhen, one would estimate that more than half of all taxis were e-cars from BYD, the Shenzhen-based battery and electric vehicle maker in which American tycoon Warren Buffett is an investor. The city’s transport commission said in December that 62.5 per cent of all taxis in the city were electric, with the goal to turn the fleet all-electric. All existing gas cars in the taxi fleet are on target to be replaced by EV's by 2020." And what can we learn from this? "Out of the world’s estimated 385,000 electric buses, 90 per cent are in China. Every five weeks, 9,500 brand new electric buses take to the roads in China. That’s the equivalent to the entire London bus fleet, according to Bloomberg Energy Finance data. Only 1.6 per cent of city buses in Europe are electric, and a smaller 0.5 per cent in the US."   ANOTHER JAGUAR EV - WITH A DIFFERENCE! More news from Jaguar and it's not about the I-PACE. "Jaguar’s battery-powered V20E boat just broke a maritime speed record" according to The Verge. "Peter Dredge, the co-founder of Jaguar Vector, piloted the boat at speeds of 88.62 miles per hour across eight miles of the Coniston Water lake in Cumbria, England. His speeds broke the previous record of 76.8 mph set ten years ago. The specifics of the battery, motor, and controller are unclear, but the team used similar hardware and technology that Jaguar uses in Formula E, the all-electric street racing series."   http://www.williamsf1.com/advanced-engineering/news/jaguar-vector-racing-break-maritime-electric-world-record-with-williams-advanced-engineering     COMMUNITY YouTube comments about blocking.   You can listen to every previous episode of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Sunday 25th March 2018. TESLA ‘SLOW DOWN’   Elon Musk is having a killer week on social media. Well, Twitter. That would be because just joined the #deletefacebook movement and axed both the Tesla and SpaceX pages. Next he has been busy responding to comments and his mentions. The most recent being a response to an Electrek story within minutes of it going live. Electrek said Tesla is: “experiencing capacity issues so they are instead going through Gothenburg port and having to use more trucks to move the cars to its stores and service centres. According to several media reportsin Norway, over half a dozen of those trucks have been stopped by the authorities for a variety of safety reasons during inspections and one of the trucks that wasn’t stopped ended up in an accident. According to registration data, Tesla delivered only just over 300 vehicles in Norway during the first two months of the year, but it already delivered almost 1,000 vehicles in March with still one week to go. However then Electrek has to update the article as Elon directly replied to their article, despite Tesla’s already having issued an official statement. Elon said: “I have just asked our team to slow down deliveries. It is clear that we are exceeding the local logistics capacity due to batch build and delivery. Customer happiness & safety matter more than a few extra cars this quarter.” So can we read anything into “a few extra cars”. Does that mean they’re working hard to meet earnings call targets, or just that it’s the usual end of quarter increase?   FIVE EVS COLD WEATHER TESTED IN NORWAY  The Norwegian EV Association has tested five electric cars in winter weather to see how they coped. The cars they tested were the BMW i3, Hyundai Ioniq Electric, 2018 Nissan Leaf, Opel Ampera-e (aka Chevrolet Bolt EV) and Volkswagen e-Golf. Greencarreports noted: “The conclusion of the test drivers was that "none of the cars is best for all" drivers. The best car for an individual driver will depend on how it's used, and that buyer's tastes and desire for comfort and amenities. That said, the "most discussed" cars during the test were the Chevy Bolt EV-derived Opel Ampera-e and the Hyundai Ioniq Electric. The South Korean car, the testers noted, delivered almost as much effective range in cold weather as the new-generation Nissan Leaf (despite the difference in their EPA-rated ranges: 124 miles vs 151 miles). A further factor in the Hyundai's favour was its ability to fast-charge at up to 100 kilowatts under certain circumstances, higher than the 50-kw limit on the rest of the cars, including the new 2018 Leaf. And a side note on the LEAF, this week has seen Youtube videos of drivers who, after a couple of rapid charges, found the Battery Management System (BMS) slowing down their charge rates. With 20,000 new LEAFs sold you have to remember it’s a handful of people but, as they’re often EV enthusiasts, they also know a lot about what they’re talking about. I’m not going to comment as I have no first hand experience of it, but we’ll wait for a response from Nissan.   NEXT PORSCHE CAYENNE HYBRID ON VIDEO Porsche has confirmed in a Youtube video that the Cayenne will return in hybrid form, as part of their new redesigned model. Digitaltrends say: “expect the Cayenne to use the same plug-in hybrid powertrains offered in the Panamera. That means the standard model will get the setup from the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, including a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 and eight speed dual-clutch transmission with integrated electric motor”   COBALT-NICKEL BATTERY According to New Scientist Magazine, German company BASF is also working on improved cobalt-nickel battery technology that will provide the sought-after experience of a charging station that works as quickly as a gas fill-up and which provides roughly 300 miles of range in a standard EV. “You will be able to recharge your electric sports car in the time it takes to drink a coffee, then drive 500 kilometers before needing to top up,” the magazine reported. When an EV requires no more investment in time and planning than a gas-powered car, and costs far less to operate, it will become a true game-changer for the automobile industry. It’s not here yet, but people all over the world are working on it and making progress.   EVS COULD POWER 300,000 UK HOMES Energy provider OVO published a report which, according to Renewable Energy Magazine: “Based on the number of Nissan LEAF electric cars on UK roads at present, the research found that new vehicle-to-grid chargers could enable the cars’ owners to contribute more than 114 MW to the National Grid at any time; enough to power approximately 300,000 homes. The research further showed that 38 percent of UK adults that own or intend to purchase a car in the next 12 months and were not aware that you could purchase this type of charger, would be more likely to buy an electric vehicle if they could use their car as a virtual power station.” And that’s interesting, because you can’t. It doesn’t matter if 100% of people were aware of V2G, I can’t pop down the shops and buy a box which runs my house from my LEAF.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
