Building Beyond Bricks: Sheridan Construction

What does it take to build a construction company that thrives for over 75 years while maintaining a commitment to excellence, innovation and community? For Sheridan Construction, the answer lies in its people-first approach and visionary leadership. Christy Kovac, president and CEO of Sheridan Construction, recently joined Show Host and President of Denim Marketing Carol Morgan on the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to share insights into how this 100% employee-owned firm continues to redefine leadership and innovation in commercial construction while staying true to its founding principles. From Estimator to CEO Kovac's journey with Sheridan Construction is as impressive as it is inspiring. A Georgia Institute of Technology graduate with a building science and construction management degree, she was hired as Sheridan's first full-time estimator after applying twice. Her persistence proved worthwhile as she grew the estimating department from a one-person operation to a team of three. As the company's leadership began planning for transitions, Kovac expressed interest in taking on greater responsibility. She was promoted to executive vice president in an interim role before becoming president in 2016 and adding the CEO title in 2020. Throughout this progression, she benefited from mentorship by company leaders Chris Sheridan Jr. and Ronnie Williams. “The company was founded on three principles that were passed on to me and I continue to pass forward: taking care of the people who work for you, the people who give you the work and taking care of the community from where the work comes. When you do those three things well, the rest comes,” Kovac explained, revealing the straightforward yet powerful philosophy that has guided the company through decades of success. Employee Ownership: The Secret to Sustained Success What truly distinguishes Sheridan Construction from its competitors is its employee ownership structure. In 2016, the company became 100% employee-owned as part of a thoughtful succession plan developed by the previous owner, Chris Sheridan Jr. The employee stock option plan allowed for a smooth leadership transition while giving employees a direct stake in the company's success. According to Kovac, this ownership model transformed how the team approaches its work. When everyone has skin in the game, the commitment to quality, client satisfaction and community impact naturally follows. Strategic Expansion Across Georgia While Sheridan Construction's roots remain firmly planted in Middle Georgia, the company strategically expanded its footprint to better serve clients throughout the state. With established offices in West Georgia and Athens, the company has plans to expand into Augusta within the next two years. Additionally, Sheridan Construction holds contractor licenses in all states bordering Georgia, enabling them to follow loyal clients wherever projects lead. This expansion strategy helped the company develop and maintain multi-generational client relationships, with some partnerships spanning three generations of ownership and more than 50 years of collaboration. The Design-Build Advantage The design-build methodology is a significant component of Sheridan Construction's service model. It offers clients a streamlined approach that eliminates the traditional fragmentation between design and construction phases. This integrated approach reduces miscommunication, accelerates project timelines and often leads to more innovative solutions as architects and builders collaborate from day one. “It gives the client one point of contact for the project,” Kovac explained. “The client hires the contractor, and the contractor hires the architect to work as a team. So, it makes communication a little bit smoother.” Community Involvement The company's commitment to community service is evident in its decades-long partnership with Habitat for Humanity.

Listen as Dr. Walker describes how she considered becoming an allergist in high school but took a bit of a detour into OB/GYN, only to end up circling back to allergy. She explains what she loves about allergy and the joy she gets from helping patients of all ages. The Jail Dogs program, active for 13 years, pairs inmates with dogs for therapeutic rehabilitation. The program, ending on December 15, has drawn support from the community, leading to the launch of a petition on Change.org titled "Save the Gwinnett Jail Dog Program." The petition, with a goal of 1,000 signatures, emphasizes the program's value in teaching inmates valuable skills, fostering life-changing lessons, and helping overcrowded shelters. The Gwinnett Sheriff's Office has not ruled out the possibility of the program's return in the future.   STORY 2: Health and Wellness Resource Fair to be held in Snellville The Georgia Advocacy Office is hosting a Health and Wellness Resource Fair for people with disabilities and older adults at the Gwinnett County Public Library Centerville Branch in Snellville on November 29. The proposed location is adjacent to Redeemer Church, and if approved, the church plans to subdivide its property. The Chick-fil-A will be positioned near existing establishments, including Wendy's, Waffle House, Aldi, Walmart Supercenter, and more. Hundreds of Gwinnett County kids had gifts to unwrap on Christmas morning because of one of the county's most famous sons. Rapper Offset, a Gwinnett native who rose to international fame as a member of Migos, held his first-ever toy giveaway at Central Baptist Church in Lawrenceville on Friday. This is the first Christmas since Offset's cousin and fellow Migos member, Takeoff, was killed in Houston nearly two months ago. The Toys For Nawf event offered kids a chance to get plenty of gifts, ranging from bikes and remote control cars to dolls and toy dinosaurs. Kids also got to play games, enjoy hot chocolate and other snacks and play in an inflatable obstacle course. Offset's efforts to help families enjoy Christmas did not go unnoticed by local leaders. Lawrenceville and Gwinnett County leaders presented proclamations to Offset, whose birth name is Kiari Cephus. A proclamation from the city of Atlanta was also presented to him. “(Migos) are our favorite sons,” county commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson said. “They put Gwinnett County on the map, and when they talk about the ‘NAWF side,' they're talking about the suburbs of Gwinnett County. They're not talking about Atlanta. They're talking about Gwinnett. Several organizations, including Central Baptist Church, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and the Lawrenceville Boys and Girls Club, along with local government officials partnered with Offset to stage the event. On behalf of Georgia's 3,500 cotton farming families, the Georgia Cotton Commission recently donated 12,000 pairs of socks to various homeless shelters across the state. Farmers delivered socks to the Albany Rescue Mission, the Friends Ministry in Bainbridge, Lowndes Associated Ministries to People in Valdosta, the Southwest Georgia Housing Opportunities in Columbus, The Sparrow's Nest in Athens, Cedartown United Fund, the Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia in Macon, the Atlanta Mission, the CSRA Economic Opportunity Authority in Augusta, Fair Haven in Jesup, and the Homeless Authority in Savannah. The Georgia Cotton Commission is a producer-funded organization located in Perry. The commission began in 1965. Georgia cotton producers pay an assessment enabling the commission to invest in programs of research, promotion, and education on behalf of all cotton producers of Georgia. Eight boys basketball teams head to Buford City Arena this week for the inaugural Buford Classic. Half of the field is made up of Gwinnett teams with the host Wolves being joined by Archer, Shiloh and South Gwinnett. Carrollton, Sequoyah, Walnut Grove and West Forsyth also are in the field. Shiloh opens Wednesday's first round with a matchup against Sequoyah, followed by Archer (8-2, No. 8 in Class AAAAAAA) against West Forsyth at 4:30 p.m. The two late games Wednesday feature South (8-2) vs. Carrollton (9-1, No. 10 in AAAAAAA) at 6 p.m., and Buford (6-3) against Walnut Grove at 7:30 p.m. Play continues with four games Thursday — semifinals are 6 and 7:30 p.m. — followed by four more games Friday, highlighted by the 7:30 p.m. championship game. Gwinnett County officials are planning to seek federal grant funding to find a new way to reduce the amount of biosolids coming out of the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center by turning them into fertilizer. The Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources is applying for a $21.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Fertilizer Production Expansion Program. County officials plan to use the grant funds, if they are approved to receive it, to purchase a biosolids dryer for the water resources center, which treats and cleans wastewater before returning it to the county's water source, Lake Lanier. The center has done work in the past to extract as much waste as possible to be converted into other uses. The biosolids dryer would be used to convert biosolid waste to fertilizer instead of sending it to landfills. County officials said, in addition to buying the dryer, they will use the grant funds to develop a marketing plan to sell the fertilizer.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's guest is an individual who always brings a smile to your face when he enters a room, with his positive force, uplifting spirit and sincere love for people! Rev. Tony Cross & I will talk about an organization that almost everyone is familiar with, but probably few know all the good work that it does, not only in our community but also in so many others. Goodwill of Middle Georgia and the CSRA , for most people, brings to mind the organization that you can donate items to and probably the stores where you can get great prices on nice stuff. But it is so much more! We'll talk about the organization's beginnings, its amazing growth and how Goodwill has made a difference in so many lives. With a mission of offering everyone an opportunity to fully develop their potential, Goodwill supports education and workforce development programs in our communities. We'll discuss growth plans for the Lake Area that will mirror those already established in Augusta & Macon, which includes providing education & training with a local Helms College Campus in the areas of hospitality, culinary arts and health care, three areas where we desperately need good, well-trained employees. We'll talk about Rev. Cross' role as the Spiritual Leader of our Goodwill organization and the important role he plays in the "whole person approach" to overall development and education. We'll talk about some real life success stories that Goodwill has been instrumental in, changing lives by giving people a chance, or in some cases, a second chance! You'll get a preview of what is coming to our area and how you can be a part of it! Guest - Goodwill Industries - Rev. The bright JESUS CARES sign that hung high on the tall Macon Rescue Mission building for so many years in downtown Macon GA always got my attention.  To me it was more than a sign. It was a pronoucement of a truth that I had been taught all my life. If nobody else cares, Jesus does. He always has and he always will.  And Macon Georgia seemed to be proud of it.  For many years, the Macon Rescue Mission was a homeless shelter. In the name of Christ, the mission provided shelter and basic needs for those who had no place to sleep. It was a good thing and represented all that was good in Macon and Middle Georgia. But times have changed. Several years ago, the leaders of the mission made a decision to do more - much more. They decided to offer a program to give hope to the exponentially growing number of people who have lost all hope and they took a huge leap of faith.  My guest is Pat Chastain, the President and CEO of the Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia.   If you or your loved one is at the end of the rope and desperate for help, this episode is for you. You will encouraged and challenged by Pat Chastain and what is going on at the Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia.  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/robert-b-goddard/message

Multiple car ownership is common (I used to own three — one for me, one for the wife, and one as a toy). Because of this, passenger cars make up almost 10 per cent of Australia's CO2 emissions. To move Australians from fossil fuel burning cars to electric vehicles powered by renewable energy, Labor proposes exempting EVs from the 5% import tax and the 47% fringe benefits tax (a similar move to the UK government, which led to a spectacular increase in uptake).'' Electric two- and three-wheeled vehicles—which tend to be popular in Asia—accounted for 67% of the oil demand avoided in 2021, according to Bloomberg NEF. - Those vehicles had an outsized impact on oil demand. Next in rank were electric buses, which accounted for 16% of avoided oil demand, followed by passenger vehicles at 13%. The latter were the fastest-growing segment, Bloomberg NEF noted. Your Heard Tell for Monday, April 18th, 2022, is turning down the noise and getting to the information we need on a ranking from the Washington Post of potential 2024 Democratic Presidential contenders, which is a great list as long as you forget everything we know about how 2020 went...and, by the way, President Joe Biden is going to be the 2024 Democratic candidate running as an incumbent unless something really strange happens. Russia's Foreign Ministry is upset at folks stoking "Anti-Russian hysteria" and bans most of the UK's current government, we'll discuss how Putin's regime should just stop invading countries, leveling cities, and murdering innocent people instead. Our guest today is Georgia Gilholy from Young Voices UK who joins Heard Tell to discuss India, a vital nation to geopolitics and one very much stuck in the middle of moving forces. With ties to America, military and infrastructure reliance on Russia, constant tension with Pakistan, and increasing business ties to China, the world's largest democracy is also at the crossroads of conflicting foreign policy. Georgia walks us through the entanglements, complications, and perspectives of India during this vital moment, and how the United State's lack of cohesive and consistent foreign policy hurts when it comes to influencing countries like India, even if they want stronger ties with America. Also, Texas Governor Greg Abbott backs off his increased border measures, we will discuss the why behind the change, and a wonderful story of a couple who round up used RV to house homeless veterans. Randy Newton: In the Bible Belt, musicians have quite a range — from rap to soul to country — and the variety of characters brings the charm and southern grit out during each performance. Listening to a local musician tells stories is very similar to listening to a band that made it big. Talking to people pursuing their dreams, one hears stories of triumph, growth and heartache — stories that transcend local boundaries and the radio waves. For a lot of musicians, church brought out their musical roots. And for one storyteller, Randy Newton, church was just the start for him. At 13, Newton was given a guitar and ever since, his heart has belonged to the song. Growing up in the area, his stories range from local dive bars to restaurants playing, singing and dancing along with multiple bands he has been a part of over the years. “I grew up at a place called the Twilight Restaurant,” Newton said. “Everybody had their first beer and their first kiss at the Twilight. It opened up in the late ‘40s, but it hit the big time in like '59. It had 25 curb hops, sold 60 cases of beer a night on the curb. In the middle of the curb was a patio, on the backside of this thing was a two-story building that had glass. They turned records. People that were down on the dance floor could look up and say, ‘play Fats Domino,' or something like that. And they turned records and there was a speaker at all four corners.” Twilight was the place. Whether after Friday night football games or for a date night, it was the joint for music. Newton credits the restaurant for truly giving him his love of music. “In the kitchen were the cooks,” he said. “Jessie Hamilton, who worked for us from age 15 to age 39 was like my big brother, and he was playing the radio and it was always the soul music … and I fell in love with all the black music. On the jukebox and on the curb, they, of course, were playing all the popular music.” From soul to pop — locals danced the night away in the ‘60s at Twilight, but several other local spots were growing in popularity as well. “Swampland, this place that for 27 years was the longest-running show of its type in Toomsboro. Every Saturday night, local bands would come and play and it was the place to be for everybody in Middle Georgia,” Newton said. At the Swampland, Newton recalled, everybody who was somebody was there — politicians, reporters, everybody who was somebody was there. Newton has been a part of several bands, each making a name for itself locally and each coming with its own stories. “We had played every song we knew, twice,” Newton recalled about a performance with one of his bands. “The place was standing up — nobody would leave. We did one song three times. Me and my wife's big hit was ‘Good Hearted Woman,' Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, it was a big hit back then and me and her did that song the third time, the place was totally insane. I got chill bumps just thinking about it now.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/momentsofgrace/support

Show Notes:What do you do when no matter your effort or your dreaming, life sends you a curveball that makes your dreams impossible? Would just contending for those dreams be enough for you? Or, if you're a bit more like me, would that be a bit tortuous? The hard part about these questions is I think you don't really know the answer until you're in a moment like that. In the episode today I share how I think I might understand a bit what that would be like because of my wife and I's battle with infertility the past 8 years, but our guest today knows exactly what striving for impossible dreams feels like. She's had her share of moments in her life where no matter her effort and sacrifice, life and God had other plans for her.Our guest today is Kitty Robinson. She said "I do" to her high school sweetheart, Casey, 27 years ago. As a heart and brain surgery survivor and homeschooling mom of 8 (insert survivor status here, too!), her life path has had some unusual turns. This episode of Supply Chain Now is a continuation of our Logistics with Purpose series, sponsored by Vector Global Logistics, and features Shane Buerster. On a Mercer On Mission trip during the summer of 2016, Shane Buerster, a rising junior at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, met Arturo Penarreta Romero, a 65 year old man from Zaruma, Ecuador. Throughout Shane's junior year of college, Arturo and Shane spoke on the phone 3 - 4 times a week, as a way to improve Shane's Spanish. But, the conversations quickly started focusing upon the idea of building a direct trade supply chain that'd enable the import of Ecuadorian coffee from small, micro-lot plantations. A few months later, Arturo sent Shane 65lbs of coffee, which arrived at his parents doorstep in Pooler, Georgia. After roasting the coffee and getting feedback from coffee connoisseurs, Shane decided to dive into the coffee business, birthing Zaruma Beans - or better put, Z Beans. The summer leading into his senior year of college, Shane secured his first small angel investment, enabling him to import 4,000lbs of Ecuadorian coffee. During his senior year, he began selling the coffee and adding key members to the Z Beans team. Upon graduation in the spring of 2018, Shane and his team opened their first coffee shop, while importing 14,000lbs of coffee from Ecuador that summer. Over the past three years, Z Beans has continued to grow. From a 23,000lb import during the summer of 2019, to four coffee shops and a roasting facility, Z Beans has become a staple of the Middle Georgia community. However, as the business grows, one key relationship remains at the forefront - that of Arturo Penarreta Romero and Shane Buerster. This episode was hosted by Enrique Alvarez, Monica Hernandez, Greg White, and Scott Luton.
