In the latest never before heard conversation from my archive, we're talking about America. You may be feeling over saturated with America at the moment as the loudest, brashest voice in the geopolitical room. I know I definitely feel like that these days, especially given everything that's going on all over the world. But I want to promise you that you're in for a refreshing, insightful, through-provoking treat with my guest today, Carri Twigg.Carri Twigg is the co-founder and head of development for Culture House media, a Black, Brown, women-owned, premium film and TV production company that specialises in storytelling about the cultural questions that shape society, politics, and identity. They're responsible for series including Netflix Top Ten series, Ladies First: A story of Women in Hip Hop, The Hair Tales for Hulu and OWN and Growing Up for Disney+.Before her pivot to entertainment, Carri served in the Obama White House as Special Assistant to the President and Director of Public Engagement for then Vice President Biden. Carri spent over 10 years working at every level of American politics and government. And in 2022, was appointed by then President Biden to the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts and the Kennedy Center board. We talk about growing up in Ohio with mixed heritage, the relationship between culture and politics. We talk about self-censorship, should we for example keep content in films that are racist is it harmful and if so why?I have to say this is the best exegesis of what I'd call ‘Americanness' I've ever heard and really contextualises the kind of ‘soup' that is US politics and culture. Carri now has a politics and culture podcast with Brad Jenkins called Twigg & Jenkins, a continuation of her engagement in US politics. She's also written a fantastic piece for Rolling Stone magazine about what she describes as ‘Trump's cultural capture', very much reasserting much of our conversation.Guest: Carri TwiggTitle: Sometimes culture really pushes politics and sometimes politics pushes culture'Music: Amanda Jones, Rodney Chrome, Meshell Ndegeocello - The Hair TalesYussef Dayes & Tom Misch, What Kinda MusicLinksCulture House ; IG & SubstackCarri Twigg IGTwigg & Jenkins podcast websiteFind out ways to support the Israel-Palestine project click herePodcast WebsitePodcast IG Hosted on Acast. Cultural competency in AD means authentic experiences of film and television because #RepresentationMatters! Yet, the "white washing" of Black content continues. Host Cathy Hannabach interviews Black visual studies scholar Jasmine Nichole Cobb about haptic blackness and the cultural politics of Black hair in US visual culture. Jasmine is a professor of African and African American studies and of art, art history, and visual studies at Duke University. Her recent book New Growth: The Art and Texture of Black Hair traces the history of Black hair in visual culture across documentary films, portrait photography, advertising, sculpture, and television. In the episode, Jasmine shares how haptics—or the mixing of touch and vision—has been central to how blackness has been lived, represented, and imagined across historical periods. Jasmine and Cathy also discuss why the 1990s and early 2000s were such a rich period for independent documentaries about Black women's hair in particular and how more recent series like The Hair Tales and Hair Love adapt this genealogy to our contemporary moment. Finally, they close out the episode with Jasmine's vision for a haptic Black futurity centering Black embodiment and freedom. Friends! Did you know that not only are we in the middle of Black History Month but also Inclusion Month?! Today we're honoring the adversities faced by advocates before us and celebrating the changes we're making now that will impact future generations. After all, the end goal is the same: creating spaces of belonging for everyone, and we mean everyone. And we know we're in a vulnerable moment in society, and in order to make lasting changes for future generations, we need to put in the hard (sometimes uncomfortable) work. And that's what this episode is all about. We're discussing microaggressions towards the Black and disabled communities, how we challenge systems to change, why separate programs can sometimes be a valuable asset, and what inclusion looks like in our own lives. We hope you join us for this important conversation about all these topics + more… ableism, the intrinsic worth of every human, you know, super lighthearted discussion right?! -- SHOW NOTES Listen to the episodes we mentioned! 146. For Black women, hair is about so much more than beauty. It can affect how they're treated and what opportunities are available to them. It's tied to history, identity and politics. And though many Black women and girls now embrace their natural curls, Black hair is still a site of discrimination. In this episode, Brittany Luse talks to two women fighting to change that: Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.), who has been pushing for a federal law against race-based hair discrimination, and Michaela Angela Davis, whose docuseries "The Hair Tales" is meant to inspire Black women to celebrate their crowning glories.
