We had the pleasure of interviewing Sam Hollander Zoom video!Sam Hollander has spent thirty years trudging through the peaks and valleys of a songwriting career. Before he was stacking Billboard hits, he was piling up bad luck, calamitous flops, false starts, and feeling like the world was moving on and up without him while he spun in place. Now he wears his failures like a badge of honor. In 21-Hit Wonder, he's collected anecdotes from his weird waltzes around the banquet of pop to help aspiring songwriters and other creatives learn about survival, endurance, scheming, hustle, and the importance of laughing even on the worst days of the journey. Music lovers spanning generations and genres will find stories about many of their heroes and industry icons. 21-Hit Wonder is one part chronicle of a songwriter's storied career and another part love letter to anyone who has been counted out—from no-hit wonders and one-hit wonders to the novelties and the never-beens—and just needs a bit of inspiration to persevere. Sam's inspiring story is proof that setbacks are just steps on the road to success. As one of the most renowned multi-platinum selling songwriters and producers in the game, SAM HOLLANDER has written and produced for the likes of Panic! At The Disco, One Direction, Katy Perry, Weezer, Def Leppard, blink-182, Fitz and the Tantrums, Train, Ringo Starr, Carole King, Tyga, The O'Jays, Gym Class Heroes, and many others. To date, he has achieved 22 US Top 40 Hits, as well as 10 Number 1's, 10 top fives, and 87 Top 10 chart positions globally. His songs have been streamed over 5 billion times, and in 2019, he held the #1 position on the Billboard Rock Songwriters chart for nine weeks, a year-end record. Sam has also been chosen to be on Variety's Hitmakers list, as well as being named Rolling Stone's Hot List Producer of the Year in 2008.Hollander's career has recently hit new heights from collaborations with Fitz and the Tantrums' multi-platinum worldwide hit, “HandClap” (one-billion-streams) and eight songs he co-penned on Panic! At The Disco's Billboard 200 No. 1 album Pray For The Wicked, including the 5x platinum, billion streamed record-breaking global hit “High Hopes” and “Hey Look Ma, I Made It!” which replaced “High Hopes” at No. 1 on the Hot Rock Songs chart. Other notable recent successes include writing Banners' platinum hit, “Someone To You,” Blink-182's Alternative Top 10 single “Blame It On My Youth”, James TW's worldwide platinum hit “When You Love Someone” and writing and producing two songs on the legendary Ringo Starr's recent release “What's My Name.” He's currently writing and producing the music for NBC'S fall 2021 new drama series Ordinary Joe.We want to hear from you! In this newsletter, you will find all the new songs released from the prior month and also some great song ideas. Let's go ahead and get started with the popular songs of the 2010s. I have these grouped by genre starting off with Rock Songs. The first one is “Feel It Still” by Portugal The Man released in 2017, and “Handclap” by Fitz & The Tantrums in 2016. We all know the famous lyrics that get everybody to clap…”Cause you don't even know, I can make your hands clap. “Best Day Of My Life by American Authors, released in 2014. This is a great song that you could play as a recessional song, that is after the “I Do's”. Lyrics include…No, just don't wake me now. This is gonna be the best day of my life. Popular dance song, “Shut Up And Dance” by Walk The Moon in 2014. With the lyrics…Just keep your eyes on me. I said you're holding back, She said shut up and dance with me. Next up are R&B wedding songs from the 2010s with “Finesse” by Bruno Mars featuring Cardi B. “Can't Feel My Face” by The Weeknd, in 2015 with the lyrics…I can't feel my face when I'm with you. But I love it, but I love it. “Love On Top” by Beyonce in 2013 with the lyrics…You're the one I can always call. When I need to make everything stop. Finally, you put my love on top. This can be played throughout your wedding day, it is very popular. So is her other song “Drunk In Love” with her husband Jay Z, also released in 2013. Make sure you play those two songs if you are a big Beyonce fan. Her recently released Renaissance album also has some great dance tunes on it as well. “Suit And Tie” by Justin Timberlake featuring Jay Z, in 2013, is a great song for the garter toss if you want to have it, or just a tribute to all the men that are in the wedding or reception. Lyrics include…And as long as I've got my suit and tie, I'ma leave it all on the floor tonight. The controversial song, “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke featuring Pharrell and T.I. was released in 2013. If this is still really popular in your area it is a great dance tune. “All Of Me” by John Legend in 2013 is one of the greatest R&B love songs of all time. With the lyrics…You're my end and my beginnin'. Even when I lose, I'm winnin'. Another great love song, by Miguel, called “Adorn” in 2012, with the lyrics…Let my love adorn you, baby. Don't you ever Don't you let nobody tell you different. A great dance tune by Usher, featuring Pitbull, is “DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love”. It was released in 2010 with the lyrics…Gon' get you right, ‘Cause baby tonight, DJ got us fallin' in love again. Another one of his famous dance tunes is “OMG” featuring Will.I.Am in 2010. This closes out the R&B. Next up are the Dance tunes. Starting off with “Something Just Like This” by the Chainsmokers and Coldplay released in 2017. I really love this as a cocktail hour or dinner background song. One of the greatest entrance songs, into the reception, is “This Is What I Came For” by Calvin Harris featuring Rhianna released in 2016. Lyrics include…Baby,
Lexman interviews Manolis Kellis about his new album Archipenko and how it relates to hand clapping. They discuss whether presupposition is a strong or weak tool in architecture, as well as Strickles and Malassimilation. Towards the end of the episode, Lexman brings up the topic of isogeotherm and asks Manolis how this relates to his music.
As the co-lead vocalist of the alt-pop band Fitz and the Tantrums since 2008, Noelle Scaggs was used to seeing huge crowds through her years of live performance and touring. Their songs “Out of My League” and “The Walker,” both of which Noelle co-wrote, were certified Platinum and hit the number one spot on the Alternative Airplay chart, and in 2016 their song “HandClap” became a bona fide sensation, a triple-platinum international hit that the casual listener could hear anywhere from Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to FOX's Superbowl preshow. What Noelle wasn't used to seeing while on tour, however, were Black women like her in any of the myriad behind-the-scenes positions that make tours possible. When the pandemic hit and tours were canceled, Noelle gathered her thoughts and then decided to speak up. She wrote an open letter to the music industry that Billboard published in September 2020. In the letter, she states, “As an artist and a Black woman of color, I can and will no longer accept being the only person like me in any room or any stage,” and then goes on to announce the creation of Diversify the Stage. Diversify the Stage is a two-prong initiative to ensure that ethnic and sexual minorities as well as people with disabilities are not only trained for technical and production positions in the touring industry but also have access to job opportunities in those fields. In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti, Noelle describes what she's discovered about her industry and herself as she's developed Diversify the Stage and imagines a future when the organization's mission has been accomplished.https://www.diversifythestage.org/
You know this week's WorkParty guest as the co-lead singer of the pop-alt band Fitz and The Tantrums. She's lent her voice to top-charting songs like "Out of My League," "HandClap," and "The Walker." But now, she's using her voice in a whole new way. As the founder of the diversity initiative Diversify the Stage Noelle Scaggs is on a mission to make career opportunities in music more accessible to BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, female-identifying, gender-nonconforming individuals, and disabled persons, across all stages. And it couldn't have come at a more crucial moment. According to recent research, just 21% of popular artists are women, 12% are songwriters, and only 2% are producers. And the stats are even bleaker for Women of Color. It's clear the music industry needs to change—and Noelle is leading the way. Needless to say, I can't wait to dive into the incredible career of this successful multi-hyphenate and learn more about how she's transforming the music industry through her Diversify the Stage initiative. Have you ever noticed how we tend to enjoy the things we are intentional about a little bit more than our routine, day-to-day lives? What if I told you that it's possible to build a life you love and rediscover your most authentic self without winning the lottery or upending your entire world? Well, you're in for a treat, friends! My dear friend Emily Ley is joining me on today's show to talk all about how to create a life you love (and not just one that people will envy on the Internet!). You may know Emily from The Simplified Planner® or her bestselling books A Simplified Life, Grace Not Perfection, or her newest release Growing Boldly. She's built a life she loves, and she's on a mission to help others do the same. In today's episode, we talk all about life, business, and what happens when you imagine the life you dream of then create a plan to make it happen. She also shares practical ways for women to rediscover themselves, especially after spending so much time in the role of a parent or caregiver. Tune in to hear more about: The big risk Emily took that failed spectacularly and what she learned from it. Identifying when you're operating overcapacity and how to implement changes to save your sanity. Emily's “Build” philosophy and her personal challenge to every listener out there. Favorite quotes: 1. There is a time and a place for that kind of work, for the sacrifice. If you're not balancing that work with a season of rest, of nourishment, of taking care of yourself you are absolutely going to fail. 2. I think that we have this responsibility to live our lives in a bold way, but what if we lived our lives that brought others up with us. 3. I really believe that nothing about you is to be wasted. And when you know these things about yourself, you are suddenly looking at a pile of bricks that you can use to build the life you love.4. Look at life and make a choice. What matters right now? Is it the deadline? Or is it the fact that my kids need me? Is it simply getting dinner on the table? What is it? Which ball is in the air that I cannot drop? Let me give myself permission and grace to tell everything else: not right now. In this episode I answer this question: 1. Do you have tips and suggestions when it comes to networking? (31:54) Great things we discussed: 1. Find Emily Ley on Instagram 2. Growing Boldly: Dare to Build a Life You Love 3. Simplified Sisterhood 4. Handclap 5. Call The Midwife 6. Essentialism 7. Through a catalog of songs that are undeniably upbeat, songwriter and Rolling Stone’s Hot Producer of the Year Sam Hollander creates vibrant pop hits like Fitz and the Tantrums’ “HandClap” and eight songs for Panic! At the Disco’s Pray for the Wicked, with the #1 hit “High Hopes.” In conversation, he relates how as a member of the supportive SONA community, he has evolved from a young MC into one of the most in-demand songwriters and producers in modern pop music.

Since their 2010 debut album Pickin' Up the Pieces, Fitz and the Tantrums has been steadily evolving away from the soul revival sound they overlapped with into one that is decidedly their own, which their hot new dance single "HandClap" can attest to. Noelle Scaggs, who serves as the powerhouse co-vocalist in the band to Michael "Fitz" Fitzpatrick, joined Soul Sisters to describe that evolution from the inside, as the band gears up to release their third, self-titled album.
