Michael "Fitz" Fitzpatrick sits in this week to discuss the writing and recording of the hit 2013 single from Fitz and The Tantrums, "Out of My League." In this episode, Fitz opens up about his long road to success in the music industry, a journey initially met with substantial rejection. He du=ives into how he carved his own path, honing his production and songwriting skills along the way, before finding the right bandmates and style that finally clicked. Fitz also explores how "Out of My League" and the entire More Than Just a Dream album marked a shift towards a more 80s new wave sound, a departure from their previous material that had critics almost dismissively labeling them as throwback soul. Adventures abound as we head to Los Angeles to chat with Noelle Scaggs, Founder and President of Diversify The Stage and multi-platinum recording artist and co-front person of Fitz and The Tantrums – indie pop and neo soul band with hits like “Out of My League” and “The Walker.” Noelle walks us through the inception of Diversify The Stage (DTS), and its mission of creating more equal and equitable opportunities among aspiring live music industry professionals from marginalized communities and backgrounds. We discuss steps that companies and venues can take to be intentional in diversifying their own business and staff, and how DTS utilizes a combination of masterclasses, mentorship placements, and apprenticeships to not only help create opportunities but also set up for the future by engaging young people and introducing them to industry careers. We also chat about the current state of the music industry and the mix of challenges, trends, and innovations that artists are presently navigating. Noelle talks about some of her favorite venues, such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre (Denver) and the 9:30 Club (Washington, D.C.), and what makes those and other venues special from the artist's perspective. When Noelle isn't performing, writing, or working on DTS, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her dogs – including a travel and food website she manages called Adventures with Scaggs. On this week's Richard Crouse Show: It's hard to remember now, but there was a time when we were not tethered to our smart phones. A new film, “BlackBerry,” starring Jay Baruchel and Matt Johnson, and now playing in theatres, vividly recreates the scrappy story of friendship, betrayal and hubris that began our obsession with our phones. Today, we going to focus on that story, courtesy of the film BlackBerry, which opens in theatres on May 12. There was a time when the Canadian made, odd little phone, with a QWERTY keyboard, encrypted messaging and low data cost, was a status symbol, used by some of the world' most powerful people. In the hands of everyone from President Barack Obama and Justin Timberlake to Katy Perry and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, the phones helped the world communicate in a whole new way. They were the original smart phones, which makes their Canadian creators Mike Lazaridis and Doug Fregin, visionaries, the men who gave us the future. Recently I sat down with BlackBerry co-writer, co-star and director Matt Johnson, and Jay Baruchel who stars as the awkward genius behind the BlackBerry tech, Mike Lazaridis. Matt is the director of The Dirties, which won Best Narrative Feature at the Slamdance Film Festival, Operation Avalanche, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and mockumentary television series Nirvanna the Band the Show. You know Jay from his voice role as Hiccup Haddock in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, and for roles in Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder, The Trotsky, Fanboys, She's Out of My League, Goon, This Is the End, and the action-fantasy film The Sorcerer's Apprentice. You can also see him as the host of We're All Gonna Die (Even Jay Baruchel) on Crave. BlackBerry is the story of the company Research in Motion, Jim Balsillie, the hotheaded businessman, played by Glenn Howerton, who was there for the rise and fall of the iconic company. “BlackBerry” isn't just a business story or the story of innovation. Instead, it is an underdog tale that emphasizes the human foibles that led to RIM's downfall, not just the financial ones. We began the interview with the idea of talking about the film, but were soon sidetracked by a discussion inspired by the lessons learned from the film, about what it means to be Canadian, why we don't celebrate our own stories and much more. Stay tuned, it often doesn't sound like an interview as much as a conversation we might have had over a drink or two. Like the movie we were supposed to concentrate on, before the conversation took a few left turns, the interview is passionate, patriotic, funny and not quite what you might expect.
Today we're talking with Dan Schalk, ACE about editing “A Good Person” which was directed by Zach Braff and stars Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman. Dan has moved from LA to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin which is where he edited this film, so we chatted from only a few miles away from each other - me in Chicago. Dan's filmography includes - among others - "The Superhero Movie," "She's Out of My League," Judd Apatow's "The Bubble," and "Girl in Progress." His work also includes TV like "Kevin Can F**k Himself," "Parks and Rec" and "New Girl."
Michael Fitzpatrick is the singer and founder of the Los Angeles band Fitz & the Tantrums. Known best for the singles "Out of My League," "Handclap" and "The Walker," Fitz & the Tantrums' career spans retro soul to '80s-inspired pop. The common thread is the band's knack for memorable hooks and tight, punchy songwriting. Its latest album, Let Yourself Free, is its fifth studio album and fourth for Elektra Records. The band is hitting the road this September with Goo Goo Dolls. In addition, they will perform at the Moon Crush festival in Miramar Beach, Florida on April 23 and Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 23. It got chaotic over the weekend on the gridiron as opening week did not disappoint in the NFL. Justin and Dashawn jump into this longer edition of the Out of My League podcast to give their reaction to an electric week 1 and overreact to the results of a few NFL powerhouses. The reigning MVP was blasted in Minnesota but should we actually be worried about the Packers? Rodgers feeling Davante Adams absence in a major way but do we need to R-E-L-A-X? Plus last year's Super Bowl representatives both lost on opening weekend but which team should we be more worried about? Doomsday in Dallas took place as the Cowboys not only lost 19-3 but down went Dak Prescott who will be out for 4+ weeks with a hand injury. Is the Cowboys season already over or can Cooper Rush hold Jerry's Boys together? All that, plus college football top-25 shuffle, NFL Week 2 predictions, our locks of the week, Robert Sarver's ban and much more. So get ready, this pod went the distance as there was MUCH to discuss so tune in!

As the co-lead vocalist of the alt-pop band Fitz and the Tantrums since 2008, Noelle Scaggs was used to seeing huge crowds through her years of live performance and touring. Their songs “Out of My League” and “The Walker,” both of which Noelle co-wrote, were certified Platinum and hit the number one spot on the Alternative Airplay chart, and in 2016 their song “HandClap” became a bona fide sensation, a triple-platinum international hit that the casual listener could hear anywhere from Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to FOX's Superbowl preshow. What Noelle wasn't used to seeing while on tour, however, were Black women like her in any of the myriad behind-the-scenes positions that make tours possible. When the pandemic hit and tours were canceled, Noelle gathered her thoughts and then decided to speak up. She wrote an open letter to the music industry that Billboard published in September 2020. In the letter, she states, “As an artist and a Black woman of color, I can and will no longer accept being the only person like me in any room or any stage,” and then goes on to announce the creation of Diversify the Stage. Diversify the Stage is a two-prong initiative to ensure that ethnic and sexual minorities as well as people with disabilities are not only trained for technical and production positions in the touring industry but also have access to job opportunities in those fields. In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti, Noelle describes what she's discovered about her industry and herself as she's developed Diversify the Stage and imagines a future when the organization's mission has been accomplished.https://www.diversifythestage.org/
You know this week's WorkParty guest as the co-lead singer of the pop-alt band Fitz and The Tantrums. She's lent her voice to top-charting songs like "Out of My League," "HandClap," and "The Walker." But now, she's using her voice in a whole new way. As the founder of the diversity initiative Diversify the Stage Noelle Scaggs is on a mission to make career opportunities in music more accessible to BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, female-identifying, gender-nonconforming individuals, and disabled persons, across all stages. And it couldn't have come at a more crucial moment. According to recent research, just 21% of popular artists are women, 12% are songwriters, and only 2% are producers. And the stats are even bleaker for Women of Color. It's clear the music industry needs to change—and Noelle is leading the way. Needless to say, I can't wait to dive into the incredible career of this successful multi-hyphenate and learn more about how she's transforming the music industry through her Diversify the Stage initiative. We head back into our astrology series with looking at our Chiron placements to see what our wounded warrior placement has to say about our lives. Spoilers: it's accurate AF. We run a little long because shit starts getting real open and vulnerable and then gets a little depressing; so, needless to say, the sex talk at the end is strictly left in to lighten the mood a little bit.
Today's guest possesses creative gifts that expand across all forms and all mediums. Fully fueled by heart and passion, Jasika Nicole is an actor, clothing designer, artist, pottery maker, LGBTQ advocate, writer, and the list doesn't stop there. Committed to pursuing an education in the performing arts, Jasika studied theater throughout her college years before relocating to New York City to follow her dreams of stage acting in New York City. Like many actors, Jasika initially struggled to balance the need for a day job without allowing it to interfere with audition opportunities. Making the decision to focus solely on what she came to New York to do, Jasika left her day job and booked a 3 line role in a Fringe Festival production that led her to get noticed by a producer in the audience - proving that no role is ever too small. After gaining representation, Jasika began to shift her focus to film and television, with the goal of winning the audition room on personality rather than trying to figure out what casting wants. Landing herself on many sets, Jasika describes her time observing those around her as a “crash course in acting.” Even throughout her thriving career, Jasika admits to having moments where she felt herself on the verge of quitting and questioning whether or not she wanted to continue to be an actor. With self compassion, she describes how her other creative passions have been her saving grace, allowing her to find her way back into the love of acting and reminding her that her self worth is not determined by the number of credits on her resume. You've seen her as Dr. Carly Lever in “The Good Doctor,” Agent Astrid Farnsworth in “Fringe,” among other hit projects such as “Scandal”, “Station 19”, “Underground”, “She's Out of My League”, “Take the Lead” and the newly released, “Punky Brewster” reboot now streaming on Peacock. Jasika shows no signs of slowing down and shares the many lessons today that she has learned along the way, including how there are no right or wrongs when it comes to process, tips and tricks on how to bridge performance gaps week to week as a series regular, and the importance of asking yourself whether or not this is a role you truly want to play and if it aligns with the kinds of stories you want to tell. In this episode, they face the 2008 film "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" off against the 2010 movie "She's Out of My League". This week we watched the 2010 comedy 'She's Out of My League.' Honestly this is a pretty enjoyable comedy with Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve, and it only gets cringey a few times. Come listen to us talk and laugh about some of the ridiculous things that happen in this movie.
Edmond talks about the 2001 hit(?) Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Other TV/Movies discussed: Southside with You, Batman Begins, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, She's Out of My League, GoodFellas, Logan's Run, High Fidelity (TV Series), X-Men: First Class, The Mandalorian, and Stranger Things. Video Games discussed: Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Follow @odd_drummer on the socials. On the Richard Crouse Podcast this week we meet Jay Baruchel. He's been acting since the age of twelve and has appeared in everything from "Knocked Up" and "Tropic Thunder" to "The Trotsky" and "She's Out of My League" to the action-fantasy "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "This Is the End." He’s probably best known as the voice of Hiccup in the wildly successful "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise but he says, despite all the success in front of the camera, what he really wants to do is direct. Two years ago he wrote and directed the sports comedy "Goon: Last of the Enforcers." Now he appears both in front of and behind the camera in "Random Acts of Violence," a genre film that asks serious questions about how we relate to violence in art. Based on a 2008 Image Comic, “Random Acts of Violence” begins with comic book writer Todd (Jesse Williams) suffering a case of writer’s block. His series, a grisly and successful adaptation of a real-life serial killer dubbed Slasherman, is coming to an end and he doesn’t know how to wind it down. On a press tour from Toronto to New York to promote the final issue, Jesse and friends, visit the scene of the Slasherman’s crimes. As the group fall victim to a series of heinous copycat crimes the film asks, “What are the real consequences when life (and death) begin to imitate art?” I talk about that with Jay in this interview but we started by reminiscing about the “beforetime” when we could go to the movies. I asked him what movie memories stand out for him when he thinks back to the theatre experience. NOTE: This podcast contains language that may not be suitable for all listeners. NSFW! Then, we meet Mike Scott, the founding member, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of The Waterboys. He is a restless creative spirit, known for radical changes in music style throughout what he refers to as his "allegedly unorthodox" career. The music on his solo albums and with The Waterboys explores a number of different styles, including folk, Celtic and rock and roll, fusing them together to create a sound that is not only catchy but unique. The press release for his newest record "Good Luck, Seeker," says the songs are populated by unrepentant freaks, soul legends, outlaw film stars and 20th Century mystics, drawing inspiration from the Stones, Kate Bush, Sly and Kendrick as well as Mike Scott’s very own musical past. It’s a genre busting effort with epic songs like the dramatic, spoken word tune "My Wanderings In The Weary Land" to the earworm of the extremely catchy single “The Soul Singer.” In this interview we talk about the construct of time, the power of the Clash and why he liked a record by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich enough to spend 8 and sixpence, or about 50 cents on it… I began the interview by asking Mike Scott why he’s never made the same record twice.
For the past decade and a half, Jay Baruchel has been in so many influential comedies like Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder, She's Out of My League and This is The End. Palm Springs is a high concept Romantic Comedy Starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti. I talk about Baruchel and the Movie Palm Springs on this podcast Listen and Enjoy!

In this episode, we get a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the world of US professional baseball. Nathan speaks with Dirk Hayhurst, a former Major League Baseball pitcher with the Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres, as well as a long-time Minor Leaguer. He is a former Sportsnet and TBS broadcaster and the author of four books: The Bullpen Gospels, Out of My League, Wild Pitches, and Bigger than the Game. Nathan and Dirk discuss the preposterously poor working conditions in Minor League Baseball, why players endure those conditions, and how the world of US baseball reproduces the logic of the American Dream. Dirk also explains how he lied his way into getting drafted and reveals a never-before-told story about how the rampant sexual harassment and misogyny of the locker room extends into broadcasting. For more of Dirk's thoughts on the working conditions of Minor League Baseball, check out this Bleacher Report piece. For more of Dirk and Nathan in conversation, check out this piece they co-authored last year in Jacobin. __________________________________________________________________________ As always, please like, share, and rate us on your favorite podcast app, and give follow us on Twitter or Instagram. @Derekcrim @JohannaMellis @Nkalamb @EndofSportPod www.TheEndofSport.com **For a transcription of this episode please click here. Christian “Batman” Baltazar and Alejandro “also Batman” Middleton watch their all time favorite rom-com, She’s Out of My League (2010), starring Jay Baruchel, Alice Eve, TJ Miller, and Krysten Ritter. The Corrections Department has a few notes. Christian and Alejandro rate each other’s looks and personalities. The boys also love compliments from strangers. Alejandro has a strangely specific scenario where he confuses Zoey Deschanel with Kristen Ritter and has a list of women he wants to kiss, like Hall and Oates, not in a weird way though... it’s cool... like Hall and Oates.

Episode 6 - Celebrities Starts off with Joe and Scott welcoming you back to the show. (You know the Paranormal episode was better than the previous episodes - Joe's comment was "I can do it on my own, but it is definitely more fun with someone else.) So, having only put out 5 episodes up to this point, but there has absolutely been an increase in the number of listeners out there, all we can say is: "Thank you, you are all awesome. We even have our first review on iTunes. Thanks to the listener, Lynn, for the 5 star rating and super funny review. I hope the camping trip goes well for you. And, thanks again, to all of you listeners out there for spreading the word. I even have my first couple of followers on twitter. Congratulations and thank you to Kyle Bush for preventing Brad from winning the last NASCAR race and picking up his third win of the season. And the Twins are really doing well. I think the world, and especially America, has an unhealthy fascination with celebrities. We tend to put them on pedestals, and worship at their feet. However, Joe and Scottie do not. Celebrities are just people, sometimes extremely talented people, but still just people. There are times we can get glimpses into the true characters of celebrities. For instance when sports figures get arrested for different offenses - such as prostitutes on a lake cruise, or drugging and raping women. But there are other celebrities that have shown excellent character traits off the screen. Keanu Reeves, for instance, has a private cancer foundation to help children's hospitals and cancer research. I am not here to talk about him, no matter what a great guy he is. My first question of the day is: If you could have dinner, just dinner, with a celebrity, who would it be and why? I limit my list to 5. Joe's list begins "Jay Leno and Tim Allen top my list if for no other reason than we can talk cars, and the humor would be fantastic. Josh Gates, from Expedition Unknown and Destination Truth, takes the third spot with his humor and stories of his travels that never made it to the screen. (As long as Joe gets to pick the dinner, no crickets for him, thanks though.) Jack Johnson, and of course, Adam Carolla the king of podcasts, round out Joe's list. Scott's picks Richard Rawlins from Fast & Loud, Dale Jr from NASCAR, Avenged Seven Fold, and Slip Knot. Ad time, Apparently Home Robotics Inc. got a touch cranky about our repeated mentions of a different robotic company last week, and announced plans to launch their own sex bot kit. You will need a vacuum cleaner motor, although their first thought was a motor from Harley Davidson, but decided against it for a variety of very good reasons. They are claiming that bot will really suck. For the second question of the day, if you could have a laminated list of celebrities that you would be allowed to sleep with, even though you are in a relationship - who would be on that list? When Joe was younger, ummm, much younger and the X-Files was new, he really had a thing for Gillian Anderson, the actress who played agent Scully. One night she was on Letterman, or was it late night with Jay Leno. . . I guess it really doesn't matter. She was on an interview, maybe she was having a bad night, or something, but she just came across as an airhead - instant boner loss. And, not just for her, but pretty much every female celebrity. There are still a couple of extremely attractive looking lady celebrities out there. First on Joe's list Scarlett Johansson. And second on his list is Kristen Lumen the redheaded lady from Ghost Mine. And that is all he could come up with. Scott also could only come up with two for his laminated list: Lena Scissorhands - lead singer from Infected Rain, Alice Eve actress from She's Out of My League. We do have our Facebook page up, please come leave your comments. Follow Joe on Twitter, just search #Tescasterone. Shout out to Ian in Kansas City, Andrew at the Second Floor Lids Store in the Mall of America, Mustafah at Custom One Kiosk, and Jon of Sea of Vapors band. Looking forward to talking to you all next week, Scott and Joe

Any regular listener of MBSing (or friend of mine) knows how much I love the Atlanta Braves, and a vast majority of that love is due to my father and my brother. I had the opportunity to sit down with them to chat about our mutual love for the Bravos and how it has flourished over the years. Eyes got teary, metrics got sabered, and fun was had. My dad, Chris, gets into how his love of the Atlanta Braves has existed ever since the team was the Atlanta Braves. Civil rights becomes an interesting aspect of the conversation, he tells us we should all watch 42, and I learn exactly what his relationship was with Hank Aaron's sons (?!??!). My brother, Nathan, gets into how many Braves blogs he reads on a daily basis and what time he goes to Twitter to refresh feeds in order to know what the day's line up will be. It's all a total, unbiased(?) delight. Notes: My parents drove 5 hours to Atlanta to see a Braves game and get one of these for my birthday (and one for my brother) two years ago. There's an odd conglomeration of new movies in theaters this week: Action with "Green Zone," starring Matt Damon and directed by Paul Greengrass. Romance with "Remember Me," starring "Twilight" hunk Robert Pattinson. And comedy, some more desperate ("Our Family Wedding") than others ("She's Out of My League"). Grand Rapids Press film critic John Serba teams up with podcast producer pal Cory Olsen to discuss all of 'em, as well as several new and notable titles on DVD.
