Michael "Fitz" Fitzpatrick sits in this week to discuss the writing and recording of the hit 2013 single from Fitz and The Tantrums, "Out of My League." In this episode, Fitz opens up about his long road to success in the music industry, a journey initially met with substantial rejection. He du=ives into how he carved his own path, honing his production and songwriting skills along the way, before finding the right bandmates and style that finally clicked. Fitz also explores how "Out of My League" and the entire More Than Just a Dream album marked a shift towards a more 80s new wave sound, a departure from their previous material that had critics almost dismissively labeling them as throwback soul. Tune in to hear an inspiring story of resilience and creativity from a true music industry veteran. We discuss steps that companies and venues can take to be intentional in diversifying their own business and staff, and how DTS utilizes a combination of masterclasses, mentorship placements, and apprenticeships to not only help create opportunities but also set up for the future by engaging young people and introducing them to industry careers. We also chat about the current state of the music industry and the mix of challenges, trends, and innovations that artists are presently navigating. Noelle talks about some of her favorite venues, such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre (Denver) and the 9:30 Club (Washington, D.C.), and what makes those and other venues special from the artist's perspective. When Noelle isn't performing, writing, or working on DTS, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her dogs – including a travel and food website she manages called Adventures with Scaggs. "Fitz and The Tantrums" are a six piece pop outfit co-founded and led by singer Michael Fitzpatrick.Usually for most pop groups, the formation of this band came about after Michael purchased an old church organ and was instantly inspired to start writing new music. Five phone calls and one rehearsal later, they were performing their first live show in LA.Everything about this group seems to have happened instantly and spontaneously. You know this week's WorkParty guest as the co-lead singer of the pop-alt band Fitz and The Tantrums. She's lent her voice to top-charting songs like "Out of My League," "HandClap," and "The Walker." But now, she's using her voice in a whole new way. As the founder of the diversity initiative Diversify the Stage Noelle Scaggs is on a mission to make career opportunities in music more accessible to BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, female-identifying, gender-nonconforming individuals, and disabled persons, across all stages. And it couldn't have come at a more crucial moment. According to recent research, just 21% of popular artists are women, 12% are songwriters, and only 2% are producers. And the stats are even bleaker for Women of Color. It's clear the music industry needs to change—and Noelle is leading the way. Needless to say, I can't wait to dive into the incredible career of this successful multi-hyphenate and learn more about how she's transforming the music industry through her Diversify the Stage initiative. This week we chat with Noelle Scaggs, the co-lead singer of Fitz and the Tantrums and the founder of Diversify The Stage. Noelle tells us many stories about the start of her career in the music industry, including days when she was in studio with will.i.am (which lead to her contributing vocals to a Black Eyed Peas track), to her joining Fitz and the Tantrums after having had a two year break from music. We also discuss Diversify the Stage, which was founded by Noelle with a focus on transforming the concert, events, and touring industries to increase diverse representation and create pathways to equitable opportunities for BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and Female and Gender Non-Conforming individuals.

Noelle Scaggs grew up in Southern California with an eclectic musical palette. In college she studied music business, later interned at Atlantic Records and began singing with artists like The Rebirth, Dilated Peoples, and Damian Marley. Once she went to sing with Michael Fitzpatrick aka Fitz she knew that's where she belonged. Noelle & Megan talk the importance of artists knowing their rights, the beauty of vulnerability and the forthcoming new Fitz and The Tantrums album.
This week, we sat down with Noelle Scaggs, the co-lead singer of Fitz and The Tantrums. I had the pleasure of seeing Noelle sing a few weeks ago at Red Rocks and the whole performance was absolutely electrifying. In this conversation, we spoke about the realities of making money in the music industry, staying healthy and thriving on tour, the intricacies of her songwriting process, and why pop music is here to stay. Noelle just released a solo track called 'Great For You' featuring BRÅVES which you need to check out. The link for that song will be in the podcast description. This French-American frontman is the principal songwriter of their own widely popular LA based band. Chances are you've heard multiple hits they've penned for said band on the radio, such as "Breaking The Chains of Love", "Moneygrabber", and "Out of My League". And while frontmen often times can have reservations about collaboration, this songwriter seeks it out and believes it to be a welcome addition to the creative process. And the writer is...Michael Fitzpatrick! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this week’s episode of SMI Radio we will celebrate the new release of FATT’s forthcoming release by featuring selected tracks off the new release and spin a couple of faves from their first record. Ahead of last Monday’s show, I spoke to Fitzy via phone from Atlanta. We talked about what has changed for the band since they launched in Seattle in 2010 (a lot!) and the direction and making of the new record. In the second half of the show, I turn the clock back and feature excerpts from my backstage interviews with Fitz at Sasquatch 2011, as well as my conversation with drummer and former Seattle resident, John Wicks, recorded backstage at the Crocodile in Novermber of 2010.
The Pacific Northwest weaves a rich tapestry of eclectic music and art that covers our region like a favorite blanket. We embrace artists from a variety of eras and genres, and we’re better for it. All year long, we at SMI do our best to feature the best of the Northwest. This includes established and emerging artists, and those who make us fall in love with them as they pass though town. This week’s episode of SMI Radio features holiday music from artists who have been past guests on the show. It’s like a virtual holiday card that doesn’t clutter up your space or get lost under the bills! First, Fitz and The Tantrums tear it up. Next, check out the number by harmonica virtuoso Lee Oskar, with lyrics penned by Michael Shrieve and vocals from R&B singer Ernest Pumphrey Jr. (Marmalade, Phat Sidy Smokehouse, and more). Deep Sea Diver, The HoHoHos, a wonderful Christmas medley from Jessica Latshaw, songs from Brent Amaker and The Rodeo, LeRoy Bell and Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart) will deck your halls. The second half of the show features more Christmas rock from The HoHoHos! – and I chat Tess Henley. Tess talks about the progress of her new record, which will be released around March – and you can check out her newest holiday single, Christmas Won’t Do Without You (featuring The Passenger String Quartet). The show is rounded out with a power-pop ditty from Quickie, a smooth tune called This Christmas, written by Michael Shrieve’s talented 22 year old son, Sam Shrieve, and concluded with an uplifting song from the voice of Yes, Jon Anderson.
