My Moments of 2024 is a selection of songs that have created special musical marks. 3 groups of artists have a very significant input this year. Fontaines DC, Kutiman and Ezra Collective have been my favourite artists for 2024. I have not only included music from this current year as it is not the music made in one specific year the only one we pay attention and my criteria for this compilation of great tunes is what music has stopped me in my tracks and made an impact on me as a listener. Moments 2024 is definitely not background music. The final song is an astonishing cover of the 1970s hit "Why Can't We Live Together" with a beautiful chorus of female singers chanting No More Wars, No More Wars. It makes a suitable final to a year of human tragedies inflicted through conflict finishes. You can say louder but never so beautifully stated. I hope the listener to Mestizo Sounds appreciate and enjoy Moments 2024. This is an excerpt from a patrons-only episode. To hear the whole show, plus much more, head to Patreon.com/LoveMessagePod. On this festive edition of What We're Listening To, Jeremy and Tim share selections from their turntables alongside thoughts on religion, atheism, death - and Blondie. We hear psychedelic jazz from north India and northern England, a brace of uplifting Gospel anthems from Pastor T.L Barrett, and some free-wheeling spiritual jazz from the Bronx via Puerto Rico. A smattering of seasonal song is dispersed throughout the selections, and with an eye on the horrors of the last two months in the Middle East, an uplifting call for peace to sign off on. We will be taking a short break for Christmas and New Year but will be back in mid-January with more LITM. Tune in, turn on, get down… Produced by Matt Huxley. TRACKLIST: 01 - Hong Kong Syndikat - Too Much 02 - Sade - Paradise (Extended Remix) 03 - William Pitt - City Lights (Extended Version) 04 - Mike Francis - Survivor (Original 12' Version) 05 - Imagination - Just An Illusion (12' Version) 06 - Sade - Hang On To Your Love 07 - Dizzi Heights - Would I Find Love (Extended Version) 08 - Chris Rea - Josephine (LA Version Francaise) 09 - Illusion - Why Can't We Live Together 10 - Basia - Cruising for Bruising 11 - Chris Rea - On The Beach (Summer '88) 12 - Bryan Ferry - Don't Stop The Dance (Special 12" Remix) 13 - Mandy Smith - I Just Can't Wait (The Cool and Breezy Jazz Instrumental) 14 - Electra - Jibaro (English Version)

Episode 70 The Sonic Origins of Electronic Dance Music Trying to understand the evolution and history of electronic dance music (EDM) is a daunting task. We'll explore some of the sonic roots to see how we got to EDM—a beat-driven music powered by electronics and often focused on creating a trancelike musical state. Playlist Jesse Saunders, “On And On” from On and On (1984 Jes Say Records). Possibly the first DJ-created album created as a commercial public release. Produced, Performed, Arranged By Jesse Saunders; written by Jesse Saunders, Vince Lawrence. 8:02 Armin Van Buuren, “Sail” from Sail (2006 Armind). This 12” original mix was written by and produced by Armin van Buuren. 7:29 Amelie Lens, “Linger On” from Let it Go (2016 Second State). EDM performer and producer from Antwerp, Belgium. 7:41 Timmy Thomas, “Why Can't We Live Together,” from Why Can't We Live Together (1972 Glades). Timmy Thomas, Hammond organ and drum machine. Note the rapid-fire drum sequences sprinkled in here and there, a premonition around the future sound of drum machines. 4:38 Kraftwerk, “Uranium” from Radioactivity (1975 Kling-Klang). Not so much a danceable turn, but the choir sample was later repurposed by New Order in Blue Monday, so a worthy acknowledgement to Kraftwerk. 1:26 Kraftwerk, “Transistor” from Radioactivity (1975 Kling-Klang). Electronic percussion, Karl Bartos, Wolfgang Flür; Voice, Electronics, Florian Schneider, Ralf Hütter. 3:43 Kraftwerk, “Europe Endless” from Trans Europe Express (1977 Kling-Klang). Electronic Drums, Karl Bartos, Wolfgang Flur; Electronics, Voice, Florian Schneider, Ralf Hutter. 9:38 Biddu Orchestra, “Bionic Boogie” from Bionic Boogie (1976 Epic). A 45 RPM single from the disco era, featuring some electronics in the form of synthesizers. Biddu was an Indian-British music producer, composer, songwriter and singer. This was a departure for the Biddu Orchestra, which was normally engaged in full disco orchestrations, not the sonic textures of synthesizers, which are heard here, if somewhat overlayed by the other instruments. 2:59 Donna Summer, “I Feel Love” from I Remember Yesterday (1977 Casablanca). Written and sung by Donna Summer; produced by and Moog Synthesizer, Giorgio Moroder; Moog Synthesizer, Robby Wedel; Moog Bass, Thor Baldursson; Drums, Percussion, Keith Forsey; Bass, Les Hurdle.5:52 Space, “Save Your Love For Me” from Just Blue (1978 Vogue). Space was a French group, created around Didier Marouani (aka Ecama) and Roland Romanelli, acclaimed for their 1977 UK disco hit "Magic Fly." 5:45 Space, “Final Signal” from Just Blue (1978 Vogue). Space was a French group, created around Didier Marouani (aka Ecama) and Roland Romanelli. 4:21 Yellow Magic Orchestra, “Computer Game (Theme From The Invader)” from Yellow Magic Orchestra (1978 Horizon). Japanese techno band, parallel to later Kraftwerk. Drums, Percussion, Other Electronics, Vocals – Yukihiro Takahashi; Keyboards, Other [Electronics], Percussion, orchestrated by Ryuichi Sakamoto; Produced by Harry Hosono; Micro Composer programmer, Hideki Matsutake. 4:28 Mandré, “M3000 (Opus VI)” from M3000 (1979 Motown). Produced and Arranged By Andre Lewis. Lewis was a keyboardist who went on to collaborate with many artists, not the least of which for Frank Zappa for whom he played keyboards for The Mothers of Invention after the departure of George Duke. 5:43 New Order, “Blue Monday” from Blue Monday/The Beach (1983, Factory). This was a 12-inch 45 RPM single of the song which became a top seller. New Order was firmly entrenched in the synth-pop dance/crossover genre at that time and this song with its funky samples, mechanical progression and even references to Kraftwerk (the vocal choir heard is indeed a sample from Kraftwerk's “Uranium” released in 1975 effectively put a few more bricks in the bridge to electronic dance music. 7:27 Michel Huygen, “Take Now Music (Extended Instrumental Version)” from Capturing Holograms (1984 jive Electro). Recorded early 1984 in Barcelona (Spain). Composed, performed, produced, and programmed by Belgian born synthesist Michel Huygen, a member of the Spanish group Neuronium in 1976. 5:34 Kraftwerk, “Der Telefon Anruf (German Version)” from The Telephone Call (1987 EMI). Listen to this track and you will hear similarities in later work by New Order, particularly the comping synth chords and pattern. 3:47 New Order, “World (The Price Of Love) (Radio Edit)” from World. (The Price Of Love) (1993 London Records). CD single of the track also found on the album Republic (1993 London Records). This sounds as if New Order is still thanking Kraftwerk for their inspiration. 3:39 Opening background music: New Order, “Confusion (Instrumental)” (1983 Streetwise). Mixed by Arthur Baker and John "Jellybean" Benitez. New Order's sixth single and their first collaboration with Arthur Baker. Released August 22, 1983.   Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. From there we learn about his forming record distributor Systematic in Portland; his working with Rough Trade US in Berkeley; and his helming of Black Flag's SST label from 1981 to 1986. Following his reminiscences of SST producer Spot and photographer Naomi Peterson, we hear clips from a 1994 audio interview with Henry Rollins — including the former Black Flag frontman's thoughts on his old band and its influence on the recently-deceased Kurt Cobain. Joe also discusses his controversial 1990 book Rock & the Pop Narcotic, as well as the legendary Sing Out!/Circus/Rolling Stone writer Paul Nelson and the vital importance of his Little Sandy Review fanzine (1959-1967). Welcome back to Don't Alert the Stans! After the longest hiatus in the show's history thus far, Don't Alert The Stans is officially back for Season 7. This mini-run of episodes will only feature Sope and Eden, as Nic takes time out for a mental health break. He explains in further detail how he is and that he'll be back in 2022 (00:00:44). Kicking off the news agenda is the legendary maverick Missy Elliott who was recently awarded with a coveted star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame for her indelible contributions to the world of music (00:36:50). In a historic turn of events, Britney Spears' controversial conservatorship has officially been terminated. Meaning for the first time in 13 years, she is now able to make her own financial, medical, personal, and professional decisions. In the midst of rejoicing at the wonderful news, Sope puts forward a notion about looking at the underdiscussed positives of stan culture. Highlighting that her legion of fans worldwide who kickstarted the #FreeBritney movement are arguably a huge and integral reason as to why Britney was able to freed (00:44:20). Closing out the show is a solemn and emotionally raw dissection of the various stories that have been pouring in since the tragedy at ASTROWORLD festival. Which to date has claimed the lives of 9 people and resulted in over 300 injuries and hospitalisations. Looking at the way the situation has been dealt with PR-wise, allegations of rioting and crowd surges at Travis' previous concerts and the need for better safety regulations at music festivals in general (01:08:35). Vinnie's Mash Potato Recipe 500gm Floury potatoes (in New Zealand I'd use Agria) 300ml single cream 200gm butter salt nutmeg butter to finish   peel and cut the potato in 3cm dice bring to the boil (just covered) in heavily salted water (slightly less than the sea) strain as soon as you can easily poke a sharp knife through them  (if they over cook and take on water they will be too salty) once fully drained put them back in the pot on a low heat until the outside is fluffy and dry meanwhile in another pot start reducing the cream and butter until it takes on the consistency of thermal mudpools bubbling. In NZ it would be quite yellow at this stage but our cows are grass feed. while this is happening, force the potato through a sieve or ricer, working the potato as little as possible Now whip the potato's in to the cream mixture, this should almost immediately come cleanly away from the sides of the pot and be ready to serve. Spin the pot to make a ball, tip into a bowl, sprinkle with nutmeg and stick a 1cm knob of butter in the middle  Maybe mash potato seems like a lame recipe, but this method produces the best results, I think. p.s. water is the enemy of mash potato. Water out--Fat in

In Florida Soul: From Ray Charles to KC and the Sunshine Band, John Capouya shows that Florida made valuable contributions to soul, on par with notable soul capitals Memphis, Detroit, Chicago, and Philadelphia. On this ep of Miami Now i spoke with this wonderful author about his invaluable book, a must for music heads everywhere. He's at the Bookfair this weekend with a great panel - and some great music.  James & Bobby Purify, Papa Don Schroeder, Linda Lyndell, Same More, Willie Clarke, Johnny Persall, Timmy Thomas, Henry Stone, Betty Wright, Latimore, Helene Smith, KC and the Sunshine Band, Liberty City, Overtown, Deep City Records all come into play in our conversation and his fantastic book.   Join Capouya this Sunday for a panel that includes producer and songwriter Willie Clarke of Miami’s pioneering Deep City Records; singer Helene Smith, this city’s first soul queen; Marlon Johnson, co-director of the documentary Deep City: The Birth of the Miami Sound; Jackie Moore, best known for her 1970 hit, Precious Precious; and Miami’s legendary singer/songwriter Timmy Thomas. After the panel discussion and Q&A, Thomas will perform, including his classic Why Can’t We Live Together, a #1 hit in 1972.   All this info is at this link ps://www.miamibookfair.com/events/?tribe_paged=1&tribe_event_display=list&tribe-bar-author-name=john+capouya   John teaches journalism and nonfiction narrative at The University of Tampa. He mentors students in UT’s lowresidency Creative Writing MFA program, as well as working with private writing clients. During his journalism career he was an editor at Newsweek and SmartMoney magazines, New York Newsday, and the New York Times. Florida Soul is his third book; his previous one, the biography Gorgeous George, is being adapted into a feature film.   For more info on John and Florida Soul https://www.facebook.com/johncapouya   https://www.instagram.com/john_capouya/

Deep n’ Twisted   I had to depart from the soulful vibe I was in and turned to some iconoclast and eclectic deeper cuts I had on the hard drive.   It is chilled, somewhat Deep and slightly Twisted. Please consume without pre-conceived expectations. Just let this one roll..   Playlist:   2014 Touch Me (Mario Chris Remix). Jerry Ropero, Tom Novy, Tom & Jerry, Abigail Bailey 2013 Spread Love (Holmes Price Remix). P A U L I E 2015 Milagro (Original Mix). DJ Meme, Bazzo Ruthel 2013 Lovely Mistake Part 2 (Chris Deepak Remix). Dimi Stuff, Natalia Tsalli 2015 Trippin (Mickey Remix). Shameboy, Max Marshall 2015 My Dream (Original Mix). Seb Skalski 2015 Booty Angel (Jimpster Remix). Till Von Sein, Kid Enigma, Jimpster 2015 The Beat Inside. Soledrifter, Marck Jamz 2013 Why Cant We Live Together (Original Mix). Timo Jahns   2015 Sound From The Second Floor (DJ Meme Reconstruction) [Xtian Edit]. Vincent Ache, DJ Meme 2015 Coming Back To You (Original Mix). Yotto 2015 Light Up the Night (Original Mix). DEF        2015 Anyway I Want (Purple Velvet Remix). Navarro, DJ Fudge, Purple Velvet 2015 Drive Me Crazy (Deep Mix) [Xtian Edit feat. Mr V]. Dan Mela, Lady Blacktronika, Deep   Highlights:   Starting with a different take on a House classic “Touch Me”.. Just to ease you in and get your attention. Check Jerry Ropero and Abigail Bailey facebbok pages for further info: https://www.facebook.com/jerryroperoentertainment/?fref=ts https://www.facebook.com/abigail.bailey.18?fref=ts   “Spread Love” included for the driving bassline which I attempted to be the common thread on the set. PAULIE fb page if you feel like knowing this artist better : https://www.facebook.com/pauliemusicfactory   “Milagro” a very Brazilian number from DJ Meme, loving the dubbed vocals. https://www.facebook.com/DJ.Meme/?fref=ts https://soundcloud.com/dj-meme   “Lovely Mistake Part 2” dropped for it its easy deep house groove. Been buying a lot of Chris Deepak remixes lately, great talent from Greece. Chris Deepak on soundclound https://soundcloud.com/chrisdeepak   “Trippin” to dive into something a bit more progressive but still light and deep.   Straight into the great Pole Seb Skalski's take on the house classic of MLK “ I Have a Dream”.. It is deep, has rhythm and fits perfectly with what I like to listen to as chillout. https://soundcloud.com/seb-skalski https://pro.beatport.com/artist/seb-skalski/60322   With the Jimpster track “Booty Angel” , you know we are in deep house territory.. But the track is twisted with a some very ethereal vocals intertwined with a rap NYC chorus.. try it.. https://soundcloud.com/jimpster http://www.freerangerecords.co.uk https://www.facebook.com/jimpster.freerange   “The Beat Inside” another true deep house funky number but not quite as easily savoured as the previous ones.. It is about finding the Beat inside of you ;0. https://soundcloud.com/soledrifter http://www.traxsource.com/artist/90838/soledrifter https://www.facebook.com/djsoledrifter   Timo Jahns’ take on “Why Can’t We Live Together?” is just one of those tunes, where you feel you know the melody but are kept wanting and then BOOM, chorus comes and you just get the structure.. Enjoy! https://soundcloud.com/timojahns   “Sound From The Second Floor” the true deep house jam I love and DJ Meme on the remix.. I added the vocal from “Why Can’t We Live Together?” just because I could and thought not bad Xtian, not bad…   Yotto’s “Coming Back to You” just continuing the deep house vibe.. Great production and if you pay attention clever percussions.. https://soundcloud.com/yotto https://www.facebook.com/yottomusic https://pro.beatport.com/artist/yotto/114140   “Light Up the Night” deep, dark hip-hop feel.. What’s not to like?? Good track do not miss it.. This is clever House..   “Anyway I Want” deep and twisted.. Exquisite production but you need to get into the deep groove frame of mind to appreciate it.. https://soundcloud.com/dj-fudge https://www.facebook.com/DJ.FUDGE.OFFICAL   And wrapping the set up with my edit of “Drive Me Crazy” I really do like that Deep Shit…. https://soundcloud.com/msladyblacktronika   Will back soon   A bientôt   Xtian
