Description:Back in episode 141, Dr. Helen Kelly and I talked about burnout and the things school leaders can do to help recover from work and avoid burnout. Helen noted in that show, that recovery was only 20% of the antidote, because the problem of burnout is not an individual problem – it is an organizational problem. So, if 80% of burnout is due to factors within the organization – your district or your school – what can you, my school leader colleague, do to change your organization? It is messy, but thankfully the incomparable Helen Kelly is back with us today to help us get dirty.Episode 141 link: https://theassistantprincipal.transistor.fm/141 Helen's links:Website: www.drhelenkelly.comEmail: helen@drhelenkelly.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-helen-kelly-65996919/Facebook: Dr Helen KellyTwitter: @drhkellyBook: School Leaders Matter: Preventing Burnout, Managing Stress and Improving Wellbeing Frederick's Links:Email: frederick@frederickbuskey.comWebsite: https://www.frederickbuskey.com/LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/strategicleadershipconsultingDaily Email subscribe: hhttps://adept-experimenter-3588.ck.page/fdf37cbf3a
What if I could give you three strategies to magically prevent burnout? Do I have your attention?Full disclosure – I don't have three strategies, because burnout isn't about you. It's aboutsomething bigger. And you can't prevent burnout. It requires something greater. Sounds a bitconfusing? Playfulness aside, today we are looking at something essential to everyone listening. We are going to talk about burnout, but I promise you this will be a unique conversation andsomething different from the “walk away from work and get your exercise” that is typical ofburnout conversations. Yes, we will encourage you to get exercise, but today is more aboutreframing than rejuvenating.

They'll jostle and shoulder each other. Important stuff will get pushed out either side. And you'll get cross. All you can do is maintain a basic level of health and safety; do the writing you need to do to stay sane.

Helen Kelly is an African Reflexologist living in Roscam, Galway in the West of Ireland. She is many things in life, including being a mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, grand aunt, dog and horse lover. She is genuine, practical, down to earth, empathic, friendly, funny, kind and sometimes a bit mad! She describes her life so far using the analogy of the ‘Game of Jenga', which involves building a tower from wooden bricks. The object of the game is to take away one brick at a time, trying to avoid the tower collapsing. She says the tower - her life, had a rocky foundation from an early age. There were many times she fell apart as bricks were withdrawn, leaving her feeling shaky and frightened until her early twenties, when her ability to keep going completely collapsed like the tower. She has rebuilt the tower many times, balancing the good times with the not so good. Having experienced negative emotions such as chronic anxiety, severe depression, loneliness, loss, deep trauma and grief along the way. This is the first time She has shared her story publicly and I am honoured to be a part of her wonderful journey. Helen Kelly lived and died a fighter. The daughter of prominent unionist Pat Kelly and Vietnam activist Catherine Eichelbaum, Kelly was destined for a life of political engagement. She held senior positions in a labour movement that was dominated by men, including serving as the president of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions for many years. Diagnosed with lung cancer, she campaigned for both the right to use medicinal cannabis and the right to die with dignity, before her untimely death at the age of 52. Award-winning journalist Rebecca Macfie, whose previous work includes 'Tragedy at Pike River Mine: How and Why 29 Men Died' now delivers 'Helen Kelly: Her Life', a biography of one of New Zealand's political legends, whom she describes as “a fireball of charm, grit, humour and piercing analysis”. Helen Kelly was the first female head of the country's trade union movement, but she was also considered a visionary, a fighter, a strategist, and an orator. Her battles with local celebrities and politicians were the stuff of headlines. Sadly, Helen Kelly died of lung cancer in October 2016, aged 52. Award-winning journalist Rebecca Macfie, the author of 2013's Tragedy at Pike River Mine, has penned a new book entitled Helen Kelly: Her Life, which is not simply a biography but also an exploration of a defining period in New Zealand's history.

Marijuana is by far the most commonly-used illicit drug in New Zealand. Nearly half of all adults say they've tried it and a recent poll found that nearly two thirds of us favour decriminalisation or legalisation. And yet our laws remain harsher than many other Western countries. Why is weed so popular here, what are the impacts and can we ever agree on a way forward?
Hey! Sorry for the delay. Moving house sucks. The USA election is nearing a close, but the sheer weight of loose ends means any narrative closure is still a distant dream.
