Paul Quigley, the founder of Newswhip, shares his extraordinary journey from the legal world to becoming a trailblazer in media analytics.   We analyse the early days of the Irish startup scene, where camaraderie and a post-economic crash environment gave rise to companies like Intercom and Boxever. Drawing parallels to today's world, Paul discusses the potential for groundbreaking startups emerging from global shifts like the COVID-19 pandemic and the advent of hybrid business models. With an ever-evolving media landscape, Paul and I dive into the complexities of news consumption. Social media has become the dominant source for many, especially younger generations, but it brings its own set of challenges. We talk about the role of bias, the rise of news influencers, and how political figures like Donald Trump shape public discourse. Our conversation touches on the importance of curation and factual reporting, highlighting outlets that blend traditional journalism with modern platforms, while pondering the role of AI and influencers in redefining media norms. Balancing innovation with maintaining success is a fine art, and Paul offers insights into his personal approach to mental and physical well-being. From sea swimming to silent retreats, he underlines the importance of managing the 'noise' in one's head. We reflect on the significance of curiosity and passion in business, underscoring the necessity of effective storytelling and marketing in building a successful brand. Financial security's impact on the entrepreneurial journey also features in our discussion, revealing the personal sacrifices and dedication required to thrive in the ever-changing media landscape. --- Thanks to my season partners Local Enterprise Office: https://rebrand.ly/EELEO Property Bridges: https://rebrand.ly/eepropbridge Azure Communications: https://rebrand.ly/eeazure  *Use code Fox20 to get a 20% discount with Azure

The problem of misinformation — and the right approach to it for regulators and social media platforms — is turning into one of the most divisive political issues of the 2020s. Every major news story brings a swarm of counter stories — from covid to the capitol riot, the Ukraine invasion to vaccines. Can measures like the Disinformation Governance Board (suspended after just three weeks) and the Digital Services Act actually foster much-needed transparency? Or will the rising power of deep fake video and niche platforms see us all disappearing into our own “truths”? All this and more will be discussed by our expert panel. One year has passed since Donald Trump egged on a mob to attack Congress, the violent culmination of his months-long effort to overturn the presidential election. One year later, the wound still festers. Americans remain divided, living in realities of their own creation. Reconciliation seems out of reach. It is 1860 redux, but instead of civil war, Americans are witnessing a virtual secession from one another. In this episode, historian Paul Quigley of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies discusses the importance of the House Select Committee's investigation into the perpetrators and organizers of the Stop the Steal rally that preceded the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. But although the truth must be known, the search for it may further divide us.

The violent decade before the Civil War serves as a warning about the perils of political polarization and the ways we may rationalize violence when it fits our purposes. Americans in 2021 are not careening toward another civil war with armies on battlefields, but the congressional investigation, now underway in the House, into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot is a battle over the truth. Emerging narratives are becoming detached from reality, perpetuating a cycle of zero-sum polarization that is further dividing people into opposing camps. Are we reliving the 1850s? Paul Quigley, the director of the Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech, returns to the podcast to discuss how Trumpist narratives about Jan. 6 are distorting reality, a day that evokes the history of the sack of Lawrence, Kansas, in 1856.

Celticunderground:The Celtic Football Fan Podcast

The Offensive Behaviour At Football act - a more useless piece of legislation I’ve yet to come across, but that’s not my opinion, that’s the view of lawyers, judges, civil liberty campaigners, minority rights groups and of course the evidence of our own eyes and ears and the evidence of government statistics.  If it was meant to stop a problem it has completely failed.    Regular listeners will know my issues with OBFA - one is that the legislation was not needed - we had laws for dealing with racism and sectarianism and behaviour likely to cause trouble. It’s not very good - we’ve had to train the police what is and isn’t offensive so that they can arrest people and they are the only people being offended. It tries to wrap up societies ills - if we have offensive behaviour at football it will exist in society as a whole so why try to wrap it up in a nice bundle and say the issues are all a football one.   I could go on but surely better to have someone at the heart of matters discuss so we have Paul Quigley from Fans Against Criminalisation.   Enjoy and then please take action… www.celtictrust.net

American History Too! is back for a new semester and we’re examining the Irish-American experience of the Civil War (1861-1865).  To help us delve into this vast and interesting topic is the University of Edinburgh’s Catherine Bateson.  Cat guides us through Irish immigration to North America, the different military and civilian roles played by Irish-Americans during the war, and some of the music that emerged from the Irish-American experience of the young nation’s most brutal conflict. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed listening to Cat while recording it.  Thanks again to all of our listeners; we are humbled to be nearing the 10,000 listens landmark in our first year of podcasting. As always if you have any questions or feedback then please get in touch at @ahtoopodcast or ahtoo@outlook.com  We’ll be back next month to discuss the fascinating Scopes trial of the 1920s.
