In this episode of The Real Build, I sat down with my former high school football coach, friend, and mentor Coach Chris Metzger. Coach Metzger made a huge impact on my life growing up. He not only coached me in football but also instilled in me the values of hard work, discipline, and perseverance that have carried me throughout my life and career. His Leadership on and off the field helped shape the person I am today, and I'm honored to share our conversation, where we discuss the lessons learned on the gridiron, the importance of mentorship, and how faith in God has been a guiding force in both of our lives. Brian is an ex-schoolmaster and Head Coach of Bath, Ireland and England Rugby. After a successful playing career, including touring with England and playing in France and Italy, Brian began to focus on refining his Teaching / Coaching styles. Originally a Command Control practitioner he transformed over the years into a Mission Control People centred approach. In the past 12 years Brian has mentored in the fields of sport and education. Mikkel is an entrepreneur with one foot planted firmly in the media industry and the other in social change. For the last 16 years he has been part of the media industry in functions such as International Insights Director at Universal Studios and managing the integration of Sky’s TV distribution business into NBC’s global TV organisation. Mikkel has been involved in the distribution of 100s of films/TV series internationally as well as advising Hollywood Studios heads on corporate activity. In 2003 he switched from the financial markets to media where he’d worked in equity research and commodities trading.In 2012 he set up non-profit Under One Sky with the mission to make people affected by homelessness feel seen and heard. At the end of 2020 UOS had provided more than 50,000 interactions with people living on the streets of London, Cambridge and Madrid. UOS has more than 1000 volunteers but 0 employees which makes for a unique leadership challenge. UOS’ work has been featured in both UK and international media. Both a book and a documentary are being developed about Under One Sky.In 2019 Mikkel co-founded the impact media agency TerraMedia which operates within the filmed entertainment industry exclusively focusing on development, packaging and financing of content created to deliver social impact. Patrick Kane is a public speaker, ambassador, disabled persons’ advocate and healthcare communications company account executive. Patrick became a triple amputee after a 3-month battle with meningococcal septicaemia when he was just 9 months old. Ever since then he has spent his time talking with others about what it means to be disabled and what others may be able to learn from his experiences. In 2010 Patrick became the youngest person in the world to be fitted with a revolutionary bionic arm and is an ambassador for both the UK Sepsis Trust and Össur. In 2012, he was selected to carry the Olympic Torch through Trafalgar Square. Patrick graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2020 with a degree in biochemistry and is currently pursuing a career working for Havas Life Medicom as an account executive. Outside of work, Patrick speaks for audiences which have included TEDxTeen, WIRED: Next Generation and even appeared in an advert for Apple in 2014 for its Worldwide Developers Conference. In 2018 he wrote an article titled “Being bionic: how technology transformed my life” for the Long Read in The Guardian. While the theme is often related to disability, Patrick’s speaking appeals to audiences from all backgrounds (and abilities) because of the emphasis he places on changing the world you live in by changing your perception of it.
