MDJ Script/ Top Stories for April 2nd              Publish Date:  April 2nd             Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Tuesday, April 2nd, and Happy heavenly Birthday to Marvin Gaye ***04.02.24 – BIRTHDAY – MARVIN GAYE*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  One Injured in Shooting at Marietta Laundromat One Arrested After Domestic Dispute Leads to SWAT Response Kennesaw House Fire Leaves Five People Without a Home   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CUofGA   STORY 1: One Injured in Shooting at Marietta Laundromat A dispute over money at a Marietta laundromat turned violent when an argument between two acquaintances, Corey Jones, 31, and Billie Higdon, 71, escalated into gunfire. The confrontation, occurring in the parking lot of the QT Coin and Laundry, led to Jones being shot in the arm. He was rushed to the hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening. Higdon was apprehended by the police for questioning regarding the incident. Marietta Police Department's spokesperson, Officer Chuck McPhilamy, indicated that charges against Higdon are expected but will be finalized later. Witnesses highlighted the financial disagreement as the root cause of the altercation. STORY 2: One Arrested After Domestic Dispute Leads to SWAT Response In Marietta, a domestic dispute at Laurel Hills Preserve apartments escalated into a standoff, necessitating intervention by the Marietta Police Department's SWAT team. The situation unfolded Sunday evening after a report of a physical altercation between partners, resulting in one person's injury. Aleigha Ward, 31, barricaded herself inside, refusing cooperation and vowing to avoid jail at all costs. Despite negotiations, Ward, who was armed and made threats captured on bodycam footage, remained defiant. The standoff concluded around midnight when SWAT successfully apprehended Ward without further incident. She now faces charges including terroristic threats and misdemeanor battery, with her bond set at $2,420. STORY 3: Five People Displaced by Kennesaw House Fire A house fire in Kennesaw on Saturday night led to five people being displaced. Responding swiftly, Cobb County Fire crews arrived within six minutes and managed to put out the fire in roughly 30 minutes. According to Nick Danz, the public information officer for the department, there's suspicion that natural gas contributed to the fire's rapid spread, following a loud pop reported by residents. The incident began outside the home before engulfing it. In a stroke of good fortune, the family dog was found and rescued during a follow-up search of the premises.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.    We'll be right back    Break: CURIOSITY LAB BIKE RACE – DRAKE   STORY 4: Crash in North Cobb Leaves Two Seriously Injured A serious traffic accident near Kell High School on Saturday morning resulted in significant injuries for two people. The collision, involving 32-year-old Ali Babar from Marietta on a Honda CB500 motorcycle and 90-year-old Marilyn Jensen from Woodstock in a Honda Civic, occurred just before 9:45 a.m. at the intersection of Canton Road and Farm Ridge Drive. According to Cobb Police spokesperson Officer Aaron Wilson, the crash happened when Jensen, attempting a left turn, crossed into Babar's path, causing the motorcycle to hit the curb and Babar to be thrown onto the road. Both Babar and Jensen were seriously injured and taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. The investigation is ongoing, with police urging witnesses to contact Cobb Police at 770-499-3987 with any information. STORY 5: Wellstar Names New Kennestone President Lorrie Liang is the newly appointed president of Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center and Wellstar Windy Hill Hospital, where she will also serve as senior vice president of Wellstar Health System. Bringing over 25 years of healthcare experience from her previous role at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida, Liang managed a 900-bed facility, showcasing her proficiency in hospital operations and healthcare systems management. She holds a master's degree in health services administration. Liang takes over from Mary Chatman, aiming to lead Kennestone's executive team, enhance collaborations across Wellstar markets, and drive further successes by engaging with community and healthcare stakeholders. We'll be back in a moment    Break: TEDS – INGLES 2   STORY 6: 'There is Hope': Mableton Councilwoman's Fight for MS Diagnosis Patricia Auch, serving on the Mableton City Council, encountered a life-changing challenge when diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that compromises the protective covering of nerve fibers, leading to symptoms like vision loss in one eye. Navigating her diagnosis was fraught with difficulties, as skepticism from healthcare professionals delayed recognition and treatment, despite clear MRI findings. This reflects broader issues in healthcare, where studies indicate women, including those of color, often face dismissal of their pain, adversely affecting their care. Auch's determination led to her starting treatment with OCREVUS, thankfully covered by insurance, though it's notably costly. With her husband and community's support, Auch remains optimistic, ready to face her new reality with strength. STORY 7: Paving Project to Close Two Car Lots Near Chattahoochee River The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is in the process of a repaving project, temporarily closing the Columns Drive parking lot on Tuesday and the Powers Island lot on April 8. Meanwhile, the Interstate North lot has reopened. Though Columns Drive will be closed to vehicular traffic, it remains open for pedestrians and cyclists. This initiative aims to fix sub-surface issues, improve traffic flow and visibility, and update signage. The Akers Mill and Powers Island lots have been repaved as part of this project, which won't change the size or layout of the parking areas. Park officials are advising visitors to use alternative parking lots to reduce congestion and express gratitude for the public's patience during these enhancements. Episode #74: Intuitive Eating During the Coronavirus

Quit Dieting for Good

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 26, 2020 22:01

I'm coming to you live during nap time today, because we are currently sheltering in place. If you're not an essential worker, you're probably home all day every day at the moment too. This can be hard if you have a difficult relationship with food or your body! So today, I'd love to share a bit about intuitive eating during the coronavirus. Personal Update We've already been home for about two weeks, because Cooper was home sick with a cold. That rolled right into our shelter in place orders, so here we sit! Overall, I've given myself a lot of grace! This first week was really terrifying with what's happening in the world. I might be more excited about homeschooling or taking some online classes next week, but this week I felt good about just surviving. I took care of the basics, and focused on self-care as much as I was able. We've done lots of FaceTime and connecting with relatives. The days have felt long, but that's the least of our worries right now. Eating Intuitively While You're at Home All. The. Time. Intuitive eating is still possible during times like this! Stress, anxiety, and general overwhelm connected to events outside of your control can easily send you straight to the pantry, but intuitive eating can help you take a deep breath and listen to what your body needs instead. It's not a "diet", and it's truly meant to be sustainable during every single season of life. That includes our current coronavirus season! The ability to not have a strained relationship with food is not just for when things are going great...it's for times just like these too. However, this whole ordeal is uncharted territory, and that can easily send you back to old patterns. Even if you WANT to trust your body, it can be hard when there is so much happening. In fact, when I asked online, a lot of you shared that you're having trouble discerning what you truly need. So here are my tips: Be kind to yourself. Your body might be in panic mode after seeing empty shelves or feeling fearful about having access to certain foods. It's okay. Be gentle with yourself, and trust that you'll settle in. If you're really stressed, and it's preventing you from listening to your body, what you need to do is address the stress. Don't fixate on your food choices; think about alleviating that stress! If scrolling social media or having the news on 24/7 is stressing you, take a break. You can turn those things off, or walk away when you need to. Go back to the things that calm you down. Yoga? A hobby? Taking classes or seeing friends? (Online, of course!) This whole last week I was just kind of surviving, and I didn't really move at all. Yesterday I realized that I was super stressed, and I needed to move my stagnant energy out. I didn't *want* to do it... But I knew I needed to! Let yourself rest, but don't be afraid to push yourself a little in order to do things that you know will make you feel better in the long run. I also did some breath work, and we took a family walk around the neighborhood. Watching TV on the couch with my husband seemed more fun, but I'm so glad I got up and did something I knew would feel good! Stress eating....and boredom eating! Some of us are stress eating, and others are boredom eating! Personally, I'm home with a 3 year old. Some of the things he most wants to do, aren't really that fun for me. It can be tempting to load up on snack food to help the time pass! To keep myself actively engaged, I pulled out an old adult coloring book I had purchased. Cooper will even sit down and color while I'm coloring! It's super relaxing, and helps me engage with something that calms me down and feels really peaceful. I also ordered a paint-by-number kit, which I'm super excited about! Another big item on the to-do list? Cleaning out the garage! Last week was not the time (we have a LOT of stuff in there because our parents had recently given back all the childhood things and other items we had left in their houses). This week, I might start to work on a box a day. It feels good to be productive, and it helps curb the boredom! Weight Gain During the Coronavirus Quarintine You might be spending more time on the couch, and that could be adding some pounds. I've been seeing so many ads and posts about exercising, restricting certain foods, and other diet-culture messages. Don't listen! This is a stressful time, and yes...that might mean you gain a few pounds. That often happens to me when I'm stressed, because my body is trying to hold on to a bit of extra! Sitting at home and stressing over it, or making myself feel guilty for how I'm coping, is NOT a good way to spend my time at home. It's not good for you either! I would encourage you to unfollow anyone who is posting tons of weight-related content online right now. I would also encourage you to dig into those beliefs. You're not surrounded by other people at the moment, and you have an opportunity to distance yourself from social media (thanks, coronavirus). You could even specifically choose to learn more about intuitive eating. I finally had a chance to start the Anti-Diet Book by Christy Harrison, and the first chapter explains so much about diet culture, and where it comes from. So much of what we think and believe about food is based on really old "science", or even just straight up lies and fallacies. I also have my FREE challenge going on; you can learn the 4 simple steps of intuitive eating, and then actually practice them. Quit Dieting for Good, which is my signature program, is also moving to open enrollment. That means you could dive into your food relationship and body image right now, and really take this time to be a bit of a reset. Above All, Listen to Your Body Personally, I'm not diving into any courses. It's hard enough to try and work and have my 3 year old at home. For some people, however, this is an amazing time to dive into something you might otherwise not have the capacity for. I have been doing lots of reading, and I'm also listening to podcasts around the house! (If you're enjoying this episode, I'd invite you to go all the way back to episode one and check it out!) The best thing you can do for yourself is be super kind. Release stress as much as you're able. Don't worry about doing quarantine the "right" way, or the way other people are doing it. Don't beat yourself up, and don't try to make yourself do it all perfectly. Stay safe, stay home, and stay healthy. Want to chat? Maybe you have student loan debt or your career hasn’t reached it’s full earning potential yet, all of these potentially negative things don’t discount you from being able to come up with a healthy down payment to buy your first house (and I’m not talking about robbing a bank either).Today’s podcast guest, Cari Jacobs, the CMO of a company called Unison is joining us to share this new concept of co-investing with homeownership and why technology is helping you fund that elusive 20% down payment. So I wanted to know from Cari how is it possible to buy a home when you have less than 20% saved for your down payment. What I Ask: Is owning a home a reality if you’re still balancing debt and getting set up in your career? How is technology advancing the process of home buying and making it easier for millennials?Tell me about the history of Unison – how did the company and concept come about and what is the audience you’re trying to serve? If I wanted to purchase a $500,000 home for example, how would I work with Unison for my down payment? Are there any potential downsides? If you could leave the listeners with one tip about reaching their home buying goal, what would it be?What You'll LearnHow to balance debt you are paying off with the desire to buy a homeAll about the new concept of co-investing and how you can benefitWhy the millennial generation is so different when it comes to home buyingHow you can use someone else's money to leverage your down paymentIs now the right time to buy (or is there ever a right time to buy)How powerful the consumer home buying market is to our overall economyLinksUnisonUnison - How it WorksSUBSCRIBE & REVIEWWant to be the first to know when new episodes are released? Thank you!  Before you travelMake sure you have more than enough meds to get you through the trip. (My rule of thumb is to always make sure I have enough for 3-5 extra days in case I get stuck somewhere due to weather or other problems)If you use a daily pill sorter, Take it empty along with your bottles of pillsFill it but take pictures of each pill next to its bottle in case you need to show someone what the pills are for. (I have traveled all over the world and never had a problem taking my pills in a pill sorter. Always keep your pills on your person, never put them in checked luggage!Make sure that you inform your travel provider of any accommodations you need WHEN you purchase your ticketsDietary restrictionsAssistance needed with transportTransportation of assistive devices (Wheelchairs, etc)You will probably be sitting still for a long time, make sure you plan accordinglyWarm socksSweatsCompression socksWear comfortable clothesFind out about resources near where you are staying for things like dialysis, oxygen rental, wheelchair rental, etc.If you have a condition that could impact your ability to travel, getting travel insurance might be a good idea.If you have a layover, there is an app, Gate Guru, that can show you the layout of various airports so you can plan food/resting if you have the time.Don’t be afraid to schedule in days to rest and recover. I know you want to see everything, but you’ll enjoy your trip more if you give yourself a break every so often. *Knowing I have a day to recover allows me to occasionally push myself to do something I otherwise would be too nervous to attempt.* Investigate physician availability where you will be traveling. Your doctor, health care provider, insurance company or local embassy can provide the names and contact numbers of physicians at your destination. For more information, see Health Care Abroad.Bring spare parts and tools. Wheelchairs can take tremendous abuse while traveling; assemble a small kit of spare parts and tools for emergency repairs. You may also be required to dismantle a wheelchair for certain flights or activities; make sure you and your traveling companions know how to do this.Research, Research, Research (your destination, the airline, etc) Getting there (Airplanes / Trains / Cars) and homeAll means of transportNoise canceling headphonesComfortable clothesShoes that are easy to take off / put back onBack up batteries and power cables for electronicsCarsPillows - so you can sleep/get comfortable TrainsEarplugs (Trains can be very noisy) PlanesA light jacket as the temperature can vary greatly.Snacks / Bottled water Travel neck pillow Arriving at your destinationDon’t be afraid to ask for assistance getting from wherever you are dropped (airline gate, train platform) to the exit. The worst they can do is say no, and it might just save you a lot of pain. Most airports have people whose only job is to push people around in wheelchairs (even people who can walk, but can’t walk long distances). Request them if you even think you’ll need it. *I didn’t think I would and almost turned it down once. I underestimated how far the walk was and if I had turned them down, would not have been able to get through security*If you have any kind of food allergies, plan ahead to have your own food until you reach your final destination as you cannot guarantee that there will be something safe along the way.I knew a particular airport had a place that was safe for me, and when I arrived, it was closed and under construction. I was very hungry by the time I got where I was going. Dealing with Friends and Family - Friends and family are complicated. They have known you a long time and may not realize all the things you have to deal with and may be clueless about things you need for accomodation.Make sure if you are staying with friends or family that they know ahead of time any issues you might have. (They may expect to put you up on an air mattress, but you can’t get up from that close to the floor. Or they might not have any food that is safe for you.)Plan ahead in case they forget something that is going to affect you adverselyTry to head off any potential problems by mentioning specific things you are worried about. If possible, plan alternatives in case they are unable to accomodate you. (For example, having already researched nearby hotels or places to get food)You may be the only person with a disability that they know, so be mentally prepared to play the role of educator. If friends and family are too complicated be up front or hell lie. Get a hotel room. A place to hide and runaway can save you jail time later. Traveling to another countryIf you are travelling to a country with a different language than your own and need accommodations of any type, use Google Translate to compose phrases that you will most need to say. This might not be perfect, but it will at least allow you to get your point across in a pinch. I use this for my dairy allergy. I made up little cards with an explanation that I cannot have dairy (including examples) in the native language. I carry them with me everywhere. If I am going out to eat, I show the card to the server so they can help guide me to food that is safe for me. The EU mandates that restaurants carry “food allergen” menus for all their items so that people can make informed decisions. There are several good resources for disabled travel in other countries. Look up the country you plan to visit and see what other people found easy or difficult. I’ve found quite a few things that I would have rejected outright, but reading other people’s stories made me realize that it wasn’t as bad as I imagined.http://sath.org/disability-travel-websiteshttps://www.mobility-advisor.com/disabled-friendly-travel.htmlhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/travel/disability-travel-resources-and-tips/2013/07/25/7e14d0aa-cd54-11e2-9f1a-1a7cdee20287_print.html?noredirect=onhttp://www.accessiblejourneys.com/accessible-travel-resources.htmhttps://www.smartertravel.com/2017/06/19/disabled-travel/http://www.travelguides.org/travelresources.htmlhttp://www.executiveclasstravelers.com/1/travel_resources.htmhttp://wheelchairtraveling.com/lonely-planets-list-of-accessible-travel-resources/https://www.makoa.org/travel.htmhttps://www.1800wheelchair.com/news/wheelchair-resources-disabled-travel-guide/http://www.accessiblejourneys.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwpIjZBRBsEiwA0TN1ryf6ryI6SX3mqMDk-sfvPhW1YkqxMEeBz2j_8LHyZmRlrhaw__UGXxoCKFUQAvD_BwE See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Which came first the chicken or the egg. I first learned about "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye" from a popular American version written during the Civil War. That song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" was first published in 1863 as "Words and Music by Louis Lambert," which was a pseudonym for Patrick Sarsfield, 1829-1892. Patrick was a native of Ireland who emigrated to Boston. "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" is a rousing song about a hero returning from war. The first published version of "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye" came out several years after Sarsfield's song. Nevertheless, it is strongly believed to have originated in Ireland. It's a much more somber song that tells about the woes and horrors of war in the popular folk tradition of describing the body parts blown off a soldier who does not come home to his love. Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye Lyrics: While on the road to sweet Athy, hurroo, hurrooWhile on the road to sweet Athy, hurroo, hurrooWhile on the road to sweet AthyA stick in me hand and a drop in me eyeA doleful damsel I heard cry,Johnny I hardly knew ye. With your drums and guns and drums and guns, hurroo, hurrooWith your drums and guns and drums and guns, hurroo, hurrooWith your drums and guns and drums and gunsThe enemy nearly slew yeOh my darling dear, Ye look so queerJohnny I hardly knew ye. Where are your eyes that look so mild, hurroo, hurrooWhere are your eyes that look so mild, hurroo, hurrooWhere are your eyes that look so mildWhen my poor heart you first beguiledWhy did ye run from me and the childOh Johnny, I hardly knew ye. chorus Where are your legs with which ye run, hurroo, hurrooWhere are your legs with which ye run, hurroo, hurrooWhere are your legs with which ye runWhen first you learned to carry a gunIndeed your dancing days are doneOh Johnny, I hardly knew ye. chorus I'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurrooI'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurrooI'm happy for to see ye homeAll from the island of SulloonSo low in flesh, so high in boneOh Johnny I hardly knew ye. chorus Ye haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg, hurroo, hurrooYe haven't an arm, ye haven't a leg, hurroo, hurrooYe haven't an arm, ye haven't a legYe're an armless, boneless, chickenless eggYe'll be having to put a bowl to begOh Johnny I hardly knew ye. chorus I'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurrooI'm happy for to see ye home, hurroo, hurrooI'm happy for to see ye homeAll from the island of Ceylon; So low in the flesh, so high in the boon.Johnny I hardly knew ye. chorus Extra lyrics I found: They're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurrooThey're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurrooThey're rolling out the guns againBut they never will take our sons againNo they never will take our sons againJohnny I'm swearing to ye.
