Today, Rev. Wendy Craig-Purcell starts a series on “transformation” which is a challenging yet essential journey, often sparked by unexpected detours. These detours—whether sudden, gradual, or intentional—push us toward change, revealing the person we are meant to become. Just as a bulb holds everything needed for growth, we already have within us what is necessary for transformation. The journey is rarely a straight path but a zig-zag of experiences, challenges, and redirections that shape us. Personal detours, like the author's experience with Ice Capades, can feel like failures but often serve as divine guidance leading us to something greater. Trusting in God's detours allows us to grow, find purpose, and move forward in faith.~ Website: http://www.theunitycenter.net ~ Download Our New App: https://theunitycenter.churchcenter.com/setup~ Ask Yourself This: https://www.amazon.com/Ask-Yourself-This-Questions-Expand/dp/087159336X~ Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/2hBqp7F ~ Purchase Lesson Series Packages: https://theunitycenter.net/sunday-series-packages~ Listen to our Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6YJWcAhQUnkEHFqBXQmz1G

In Part 1 of Episode 41, I'm joined by Dina Parise, the 2015 IHRA Pro Modified World Champion, and The Confidence Doctor, Dr. Bob Winters. Dina Parise, who grew up on Long Island, was a competitive gymnast in the summer and a passionate ice skater in the winter, idolizing Dorothy Hamill. She turned her love for ice skating into a four-year career performing with the Ice Capades, where she even had the chance to meet her idol. In our conversation, Dina shares stories from that time, including the first time she signed an autograph, meeting her husband Andrew, a champion driver in his own right, and how she got hooked on drag racing. She also reflects on the thrill of winning her first driver's championship and reveals why, in a movie about her life, she'd want Marisa Tomei to play her. In this month's discussion with Dr. Bob Winters, we delve into his pioneering work in junior golf, focusing not just on the swing but on the mental game. Dr. Winters emphasizes the importance of cultivating a positive attitude, focus, and the right mental approach. Recognizing this need decades ago, he developed a program to help young players build the mindset necessary for success. We also explore the concept of “the drive to finish,” addressing why some top players have struggled to close out tournaments recently—a challenge we've all faced. Doc offers insights and strategies to help us overcome that hurdle.

How fun to sit down with a young old friend and catch up after a long pandemic pause. Olympian, Tai Babilonia, is as beautiful, luminescent, gracious, inspiring, perseverant, focused, and fun as she ever was. The World Figure Skating Champion, and 5x U.S. Figure Skating Champion, was as fearless in retelling milestones in her life as she was living them. From great triumphs to heartbreaks, big and small, Tai's acceptance of her lot, no matter what, no doubt helped carry her from one victory to the next. Her gratitude for her good fortune, her love, and respect for her parents, her brother, and her son are admirable and enviable. We talked about Tai's journey on the ice––thank God for Mabel Fairbanks who took a very young Tai and forced her hand into Randy Gardners––beautiful story there bookmarked with the pages being written with loving care, overseen by Tai and Randy to honor her. From the '76 Olympics to the 5 US Championships, to being only the 2nd Americans to win the World Championship, to the nightmare that ended their Olympic dreams in '80, starring in the Ice Capades and working feverishly in the years following… the toll it took, the drinking, the bottom, sobriety, back out there, more drinking, her marriage, her beloved son, her engagement to David Brenner, insights there into her and him, two stories - Bill Cosby and Chris Botti, and the strength in her sobriety that stuck, a show at the forum that led to coaching Jack Nicholson's daughter and then Denzel's. No name dropper she, this is all just part of her glamorous story. There's so much humanity, and hard truth here to balance it. Conversing with Tai feels like coming home… comfortable, effortless, warm, and affectionate. I loved every second. MEET LISA CAREY Saying yes to new adventures has propelled Lisa Carey through three careers, and she's just getting started. In her latest role as founder of Intentfully FiT, a well-being platform for women over 50, Lisa is redefining the anti-aging narrative by creating a community that finds joy in the age of NOW. She sees the journey of becoming the best versions of ourselves as a celebration of ageless authenticity in each moment along the way. Lisa's first act began at 17 when she said yes to talent scouts who recruited her to join the Ice Follies. “I was a National Figure Skating Pairs Champion who had just missed my try at the Olympics and they wanted to match me up with another partner professionally. It was all very ‘kismet-esque,' but I remember boarding the plane to leave home and seeing my dad cry for the very first time. Still, I couldn't believe I was actually getting paid to do something I loved to do with all my heart.” Thus, started a decade of travel as a professional athlete -- touring with Ice Follies, Ice Capades and Scott Hamilton's Stars on Ice; capturing a National Professional Pairs Championship and World Silver Medal, and representing the U.S. in events in China, South Africa, and Spain. Returning to Los Angeles at age 27, Lisa resumed her education with evening courses in marketing and public relations at UCLA. One night after class a guest lecturer offered her a job interview and she said yes to career adventure number two. She worked her way up to Agency General Manager, then became PR Director of the Harlem Globetrotters, before establishing Lisa Carey Public Relations when her first of two children was born. The Ramones are considered the first true punk band by many.  Despite never having a lot of commercial success, the band achieved immortality as the founders of a rock genre, and inspired a multitude of bands to follow.  Their debut album, self titled as Ramones started it all in 1976.  The album came out in February but we're featuring it in the summer of 1976 which is considered the "summer of punk."The Ramones got their name from Paul McCartney of The Beatles, who would check into hotels using the pseudonym "Paul Ramon."  Each band member took on the Ramone name, so the band consisted of Joey Ramone on lead vocals, Johnny Ramone on guitar, Dee Dee Ramone on bass and backing vocals, and Tommy Ramone on drums and backing vocals.  The Ramones came out of Queens, New York and got their start in 1974 playing at the Manhattan clubs like Max's Kansas City and CBGB's, where they would be regulars.  While the iconic look of the ban is imitated frequently, at the time of the hippie and glam rock popularity they stood out in their black leather jackets.  The music was different as well - high energy, simple chords, and tight, short singles.  They played fast, and they played loud!  Recording was fast as well.  Sessions for this debut album were completed in a week at a cost of $6,400.  The result gave the appearance of a do-it-yourself work which hid the very deliberate work with overdubbing and doubling vocals. While the debut album was not considered a commercial success at the time, it has grown in stature over the years to the point that it clocks in a number 33 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of all time, and number 1 on Spin Magazine's list of "50 Most Essential Punk Records."The group would tour almost continually from their founding until they disbanded in 1996.  Unfortunately all four of the founding members of the Ramone's have died.Friend of the show Ted Shomake joins us to highlight this iconic band and album. Judy Is A PunkThis song refers to Jackie and Judy, two juvenile delinquents who join the Ice Capades and the domestic terrorist Symbionese Liberation Army.  They may have died by the end of the song.  Clocking in at just over a minute and a half, you'd better listen quick!Blitzkrieg BopIf you have only heard one Ramones song, this is likely the one that you've heard.  Despite the thinking that the song drops Nazi references, it is really about going to a concert.  The band wanted to be a big rock and roll band, and this song was designed to give the audience something to chant, similar to the Bay City Rollers song, "Saturday Night."  "Hey! Ho!...Let's go!"53rd and 3rdBassist Dee Dee Ramone wrote this homage to the New York street corner also known as "The Loop," a location notorious for male prostitution in the mid-70's.  The song tries to make a bleak reality something fun. Now I Wanna Sniff Some GlueMuch of the work of the Ramones was designed to be shocking, but not meant to be taken seriously.  "Now I wanna sniff some glue.  Now I wanna have somethin' to do."    Let's DanceWhile the rest of this album is original music, this is a cover of a 1962 song performed Chris Montez and written by Jim Lee.  The Ramones took the speed and volume up from the Montez version, but otherwise stayed pretty faithful to the original. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture “Logan's Run"Actually we are playing the more disco oriented theme from the television series "Logan's Run." but the motion picture of the post-apocalyptic world hit the theaters this month. STAFF PICKS:Don't Go Breaking My Heart by Elton John and Kiki DeeBrian's staff pick features a famous duet inspired by the duets of Motown.  John recorded his part in Toronto and Dee recorded her part in London.  The original version had Elton John singing over 3/4 of the song, but he was reigned in by the producer.  The song was a big hit, clocking in at the top of the charts in both the U.S. and the U.K.  Surprisingly, this song is the first number 1 hit in the U.K for Elton John.Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (Give Up the Funk) by ParliamentBruce brings us perhaps the most famous P-Funk song, written by drummer Jerome Brailey, Bassist Bootsy Collins, and producer/founder George Clinton.  This is off the fourth Parliament album "Mothership Connection."  It was a concept album loosely based on an outer space theme, and would create the base for future P-Funk concerts. Cherry Bomb by the RunawaysWayne's staff pick brings us back to the punk feel with an all female band.  Joan Jett and Lita Ford both got their start in this group.  Other members included Jackie Fox on bass, Sandy West on drums, and lead singer Cherie Currie also contributed her name to the title of the song.  The Runaways were a "put together" group rather than an organic group.Tom Tauberts Blues by Tom WaitsTed Shomake brings us a deep cut which captures the turn in Waits music from commercial to the more gravelly feel his later works would have.  The song is about an alcoholic seeking money to go "waltzing Matilda," or going walking around as a vagrant.  It is a lyrically dense, heartbreaking song.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Movin'  by Brass ConstructionThis disco tinged mostly-instrumental takes us out of this episode.

About Dina Parise (from her website):Dina ‘Spicy Meatball' Parise is the President of Dina Parise Ventures, as well as a Driver, cook, PR person, Social Media and Marketing Maestro. Parise is the 2015 IHRA Pro Mod World Champion and is the first female to hold that esteemed title, yet that only scratches the surface. How many former Professional Figure Skating, World Champion Pro Mod Drivers do you know? That's right! Only one! That is what makes Parise one of the most dynamic figures on the circuit today.Growing up on Long Island, she was a competitive gymnast all through school but her real passion was figure skating. Her ultimate dream was to skate professionally for the World-Renowned ‘Ice Capades'. She took that passion and made her dream a reality, although it almost did not come to fruition! She passed her audition with flying colors, but there was an issue. Parise was told she did not meet the height requirement. In the scheme of things, that did not seem to matter to the gentleman running the audition. He was so impressed with her, he had her ‘adapt' her height (yes, she lied) on the application, and the rest is history. She then skated, touring with the ‘Ice Capades' for four years.Did you ever see something and just know you had to try it? Even if maybe you did not succeed, but you just had to try? Well, that's just what Parise thought when she began drag racing. She had to try it. When your very first time down the ¼ mile is 9 seconds at 146 MPH you know you mean business! Not to mention, she was in her 30's at the time. There was no looking back from there! Now in her Pro Mod Cadillac ‘Stella', she powers down the ¼ mile track in under 6 seconds at over 240 MPH. In her words, “I was born with glitter in my veins and a led foot!” Racing is not just a man's game as some may think. The most engaging part about it is the fact that in racing, men and women compete equally and are not segregated by gender (unless you are affiliated with F1, but that's another story).Something many people do not realize is that drag racing circuits and touring Ice shows are quite parallel. Touring with an Ice show consists of traveling week to week from venue to venue. The ice surface changes, but the performer still has their ‘skates' (to perform with) and ‘sequin costume's. The fans wait (by the backstage door) for autographs and the children have positive role models to look up to. In racing, the game is the same although the venue and the equipment may be vastly different. The racers race at a different track (venue) each week. The track surface changes, and racers have ‘Tires' (for performance) and ‘Fire suit' (as clothing). When coming back from a run, fans wait to have autographs signed, and meet the drivers. You see, it's all relative!DPV has a rich history in giving back to the community on many levels. Parise has also ventured into the hosting side. Her days as a performer for the Ice Capades honed her skills for promotion, marketing and on-camera work.    “I want people, (especially females) to know they can achieve anything they set their mind to.” Said Parise. “Never let anyone tell you no.”“Follow your dreams.
