Is the film industry still a man's world, or are women now leading the way? How will AI affect films? These are just some of the questions addressed by a panel of four leading women working in film, who joined Anna Smith at this year's Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival (EMIFF). They also talked about the creative and business side of the industry, and their work-life balance. The 12th edition of EMIFF was produced with her usual flair and creativity by festival director Sandra Seeling, who invited Girls On Film back for another panel featuring four high profile panellists, to join Anna Smith on stage at the Sala Rivoli in Palma on 21 October 2023. In this recording of that event, listen to our guests talk about how they got started in the industry, the importance of mentorship, and how to lead well. Anna is joined, first off, by Nurhan Sekerci-Porst, Germany-based producer of films including In The Fade and Rheingold. From the USA, she welcomes Nicol Paone, the writer, director and producer whose film The Kill Room, which stars Uma Thurman and Samuel L Jackson, played at the festival. She is joined by her fiancé Nicole Weis, Head Of Theatrical Distribution at IFC Films. And finally she is joined by Rosie Fellner, actress, producer and owner of Rosebud Productions. This international panel gave some riveting insight into working in the industry. The conversation takes some surprising turns and is inspiring and funny. This week's episode is all about embracing and being empowered by the ‘f**k you moments' in our lives as I am joined by Hollywood goddess, Diane Kruger! Diane has became one of our most respected actresses since breaking out as Helen of Troy in Troy (alongside Brad Pitt's stunning bob), before going on to star in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, and later winning the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival for In The Fade, where she played a woman widowed following a terrorist attack. Now Diane returns with the high-kicking all-female spy thriller, The 355, alongside Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz and Lupita Nyongo. The movie sees five international spies come together to save the world from a mysterious cyber threat. Think of it as James Bond meets The Spice Girls - it's right up our street! But for all the success on screen there have been moments of deep disappointment for Diane. After training at the Royal Ballet School, Diane had to shelve her ballet career as a teenager following a knee injury. And even when she finally hit the big time in Troy, the role left her pigeon-holed and out of work. As Diane reveals in this episode, even winning her role in Inglourious Basterds came after Quentin Tarantino refused to audition her - becoming one of the greatest ‘f**k you moments' of her life. But sometimes other people doubting us can be the greatest fuel for empowering ourselves - am I right? Also in this episode Diane talks about how training for The 355 six months after giving birth affected her body image and how heartbreak and grief in her mid-30's led to her being more open and honest about her mental health. Plus, she opens up about becoming a mother for the first time in her 40's with her partner, actor Norman Reedus and the ageism that has come with being a mother later in life. I love what Diane has to say about staying true to your own narrative and never giving up on YOU so I hope this inspires you to make the right decision for your own life, be that in your career, or even decisions around parenting! I hope you continue to listen and find the power to Reign in your own lives, too. And if you love this episode, please get in touch (follow me across social media @joshsmithhosts), I love hearing from you. Love, Josh xxx
We are breaking with tradition in the Lounge this week and reviewing not one, not two but three comic book movies. Moid has always been a Batman fan, Chris just copies what Moid does, Russ has multiple Batman tattoos and Dave has never seen the Dark Knight Trilogy. What a bunch of A-Holes. REVIEW BATMAN BEGINS THE DARK KNIGHT THE DARK KNIGHT RISES QUICK FLICKS Split, Birdbox, Snowdon, Ghost Stories, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Big Short, In The Fade, The House That Jack Built, The Orphanage, North By Northwest, Time After Time, Hold The Dark, Peppermint, The Endless, Fred, Attack the Block, Creep, Don't Worry He Won't Get Far On Foot, Eden Lake, Bros: When the Screaming Stops. The Snakeskin Movie Lounge is a fiercely independent podcast. We are commercial free, not part of a network and totally self funded. The only payment we accept is a 5 star rating and review on iTunes, it really helps like minded people find the show.

He's battled Bond. Collected Infinity Stones. Stood in a line-up with the Usual Suspects. And now Benicio Del Toro, Oscar-winning legend and star of Sicario 2: Soldado, is gracing this week's Empire Podcast. He talks to Ian Freer about returning to play the hitman, Alejandro, his Bond and Star Wars experiences, and more. Then, in the podbooth, a dearth of colleagues of such lethal cunning means it's a two-person pod this week, with Helen O'Hara hosting James Dyer as they talk about that proposed 'fan' remake of The Last Jedi, kick around the week's movie news, and review Freak Show and In The Fade. So, sit back, relax and enjoy this belated podcast (we delayed it because the Benicio Del Toro interview didn't happen until this Saturday afternoon), which may be the first one in our history to feature someone in Los Angeles linking to themselves in London. All will be revealed...

This week on the SyrupCast, MobileSyrup features editor Igor Bonifacic is joined by managing editor Patrick O'Rourke and telecom reporter Sameer Chhabra to talk about Motorola's new phones and Patrick's look back at the iPhone X six months after the phone's release. Motorola just announced its 2018 series of mid-range smartphones. The team discusses the strategy behind Motorola releasing so many mid-range smartphones at once, as well as Sameer's experience at the company's G6 and E5 preview event in New York. On the high-end of the smartphone market, Patrick discusses what it's been like to use the iPhone X for the past six months. His main takeaway is that the gestures he initially found clunky are now so ingrained that he has a hard time using any other smartphone. He also has new thoughts on the look of the phone. Tune in to hear the SyrupCast team's thoughts. Do you have questions, comments, thoughts, or anything you would like addressed on the podcast? Send us an email to podcast@mobilesyrup.com. All of us—you, me, everybody—we’re living our lives subject to often invisible forces beyond our control. Culture, politics, economics, history, even the weather. They all have the power to shape our lives or tear them suddenly to pieces. My guest today, Fatih Akin, has first-hand experience of strong cultural cross-winds. Ethnically Turkish and raised in Germany, he has made many films dealing with sudden dislocation and how people respond to it. Akin won Best Screenplay at Cannes for THE EDGE OF HEAVEN, and he’s also justly celebrated for the intense drama HEAD-ON and for CROSSING THE BRIDGE – a documentary about the Istanbul music scene. His latest, IN THE FADE will be released in the US on December 27th, 2017. it was nominated for a Palme D’Or and its star, Diane Kruger, won Best Actress at Cannes for her gripping performance in it.
