What up Fellas!

Expect details on how to join the call by Friday.About This EpisodeWe live in a time defined by the agency of what author, critic, and teacher Howard Rheingold famously described as “tools for thought” — media that expand our minds and enhance our ability to learn and collaborate, both for good and ill. But just because we're on the Web doesn't make us “net smart”, another term from Rheingold's extensive catalogue of pithy idioms. As anyone with a pocket supercomputer can attest, having information on tap doesn't necessarily result in better attention management, boost our critical thinking, or confer a greater capacity to engage in prosocial collective action…but we can choose to allocate ourselves to developing the skills we need to thrive on this electronic frontier. And who better to help us than Rheingold himself, a legendary figure whose reporting and counsel from the frothy edge can teach us all great volumes about how to deepen our humanity in technologically-augmented worlds.Disclaimer: the audio and video on Howard's end of the recording drifted unevenly and sometimes minutes away from each other…and while I put in several extra days of effort to repair it all, you will notice moments where they don't line up. Ihr seid bei "On the Way to New Work" – heute mit Stephan Grünewald.

Even if you make an awesome product, if you don't help your perfect customer identify with your brand, it won't sell. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom-and-pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients, so here's one of those. [Tapper's Jewelry Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here, along with Stephen Semple, and we talk about brands, building big brands, big, exciting, profitable brands, and yet, during the countdown, Stephen didn't mention which brand we're going to be talking about, but he did mention a category. Somebody built an empire so big that their product actually created the category of light beer. Stephen Semple: Yes, and the reason why I have to look at it that way is it's a big company that made it happen, but it's still a pretty interesting story, because light beer, look, it's a huge category in the beer business, and it was not always that way. In fact, when light beer was first launched, it was a huge failure. It bombed, and it was Miller that created the first success in this space and really created this as a category. At its peak in 1977, Miller Lite was the number two beer in America. Dave Young: We've talked about Miller Lite and their campaign, and they had the world by the tail with Miller Lite. Stephen Semple: They really did, yeah. Dave Young: Then somebody talked him into changing the campaign. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Yep. Dave Young: Because it was at their peak, when it was the Less Filling, Tastes Great. Stephen Semple: Yes. That's what made it, and we're going to talk about how that came about, because it's a really interesting story. Because calorie-reduced beer was introduced in the market in New York by Rheingold Brewery as Gablister's Diet Beer. Dave Young: Yum. Stephen Semple: Sorry. Gablinger's Diet. It was introduced as a diet beer, and it was made using a process developed by chemist Herscher Gablinger of Basel, Switzerland, so it's this Swiss chemist created the process. The version used by Rheingold was developed by Joseph Owades. Now, Joseph then offered the recipe to Peter Hand Brewery, which created Meister Brau Light, so the second one that came out was Meister Brau Light. Now Peter Hand Brewery got into financial trouble in 1972 and sold several of their labels to Miller, and Miller relaunched the light beer as Lite Beer from Miller, not Miller Lite at first, it was Lite Beer from Miller, and Lite being L-I-T-E. It didn't do well. In fact, it was a dud. Around the same time, another brewery was struggling with a light calorie-reduced beer, and the category was simply not working. The problem was the ads were aimed at dieters. Dave Young: This was the era of Tab soft drink. There were diet things. Everything was diet, diet. My guess is they steered the diet industry in a different direction. Stephen Semple: The whole diet thing, just for the beer category, didn't work, but here's when things get strange. When they were doing market research on it, because Miller really believed there was an opportunity here, and when they did market research on it, it showed that 90% of Miller drinkers had tried the light beer once, they had tried it. They didn't say they disliked it, but they didn't buy it again. On one hand, you can go, "Well, the advertising's working, the promotion's working, our drinkers are trying it. They're not saying they dislike it, but they're not buying it again." Here's basically where they landed. The Miller beer drinker at that time was really described as the two-fisted drinker,

He recalls the significance of receiving his grade 5 piano examination result by post, "a lightbulb moment” in which he realised what he wanted to do with his life. He also describes his parents' grief after the death of his baby sister, which led to the Pappano family moving to Connecticut, where Antonio continued his musical tuition under a local piano teacher called Norma Verrilli and composer Arnold Franchetti. His professional career was nurtured by conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim who employed Pappano as his assistant for six years, a period in which he learned the art of conducting. He also looks back at his 22 years leading the Royal Opera at Covent Garden and talks candidly of his concerns about the funding and championing of opera in the UK.Producer: Edwina PitmanMusic and archive:Puccini, Turandot, Act 1 Ah! per l'ultima volta! Carolin shares her 50 years of experience with yoga and how it has been a constant companion throughout her life. She discusses the importance of finding a yoga teacher who understands your needs and emphasises the union of body, breath, and mind in yoga practice. The conversation also delves into topics covered in Carolyn's book, including stress management, the role of sex in relationships, and the power of self-empowerment. Carolin's book is now available on Amazon. You can order your copies on the link below. KEY TAKEAWAYS Yoga is accessible to everyone, regardless of flexibility or physical abilities. The book covers a wide range of topics, including eating disorders, stress, insomnia, and more. The key to yoga is the union of body, breath, and mind. Carolin's book offers practical advice and techniques that can be easily incorporated into daily life. Carolin emphasises the importance of self-care and listening to one's own body and instincts. BEST MOMENTS "I think it was triggered by Covid because I had no more excuse." "I don't encourage people to self-cure, but I do encourage to manage." "It's not rocket science, and you can call it yin yoga, you can call it restorative yoga, you can call it ashtanga, you can call it hatha yoga." "Never repeat this mistake. Always doubt things, always do your own research, never just trust someone because they speak louder than everyone else."   This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Carolin's extensive experience means that she is lucky enough to have met, interviewed and taught many amazing and fascinating people. Her passion for living well through yoga is sincere and her classes are filled with laughter. Carolin's first ever interaction with yoga was around 1973, in the USA, where she lived with her uncle and his family. Carolin watched ‘Lilias Yoga and You', a television show hosted by Lilias Folan, North America's ‘First Lady of Yoga'. Her simple yoga routines, which Carolin practised religiously day and night, gave her structure, stability and comfort. Her early yoga days back in Düsseldorf, Germany, came during Carolin's university years. Students had to meet in private houses as there were no yoga studios. Carolin's fellow yogis at the time were the musicians Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider-Esleben, best known as the founding members of the electronic band Kraftwerk. Another yoga friend was one of the producers of Electric Music and Rheingold, Lothar Manteuffel. There seemed to be a special connection between music, yoga and Germans searching for a better life. Before Carolin became a British Wheel of Yoga teacher 20 years ago, she used to work as a TV presenter and producer for RTL in Luxemburg and Germany. Throughout her TV career, Carolin met and interviewed all kinds of famous and interesting people, but behind the glittery TV world she always craved for a family of her own and a life in London. When Carolin and her husband Jörg sold their London-based TV production company, they used some of the profits to found and run an award-winning charity, My Life Films, training young filmmakers to produce personalised films for people living with dementia. Today, they are still trustees of this charity and have since overseen the launch of the world's first streaming platform for people with cognitive needs, My Life TV – a kind of ‘Netflix for Dementia' – all non-profit. Carolin likes to keep busy and is lucky enough to live in leafy Richmond upon-Thames on the outskirts of London, enjoying the beauty of her neighbourhood with her husband, 3 grown-up daughters, 2 baby granddaughters and labradoodle, Bowie. Carolin's book is now available on Amazon. Is the film industry still a man's world, or are women now leading the way? How will AI affect films? These are just some of the questions addressed by a panel of four leading women working in film, who joined Anna Smith at this year's Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival (EMIFF). They also talked about the creative and business side of the industry, and their work-life balance. The 12th edition of EMIFF was produced with her usual flair and creativity by festival director Sandra Seeling, who invited Girls On Film back for another panel featuring four high profile panellists, to join Anna Smith on stage at the Sala Rivoli in Palma on 21 October 2023. In this recording of that event, listen to our guests talk about how they got started in the industry, the importance of mentorship, and how to lead well. Anna is joined, first off, by Nurhan Sekerci-Porst, Germany-based producer of films including In The Fade and Rheingold. From the USA, she welcomes Nicol Paone, the writer, director and producer whose film The Kill Room, which stars Uma Thurman and Samuel L Jackson, played at the festival. She is joined by her fiancé Nicole Weis, Head Of Theatrical Distribution at IFC Films. And finally she is joined by Rosie Fellner, actress, producer and owner of Rosebud Productions. This international panel gave some riveting insight into working in the industry. The conversation takes some surprising turns and is inspiring and funny. Like it or not, knowing how to make use of online tools without being overloaded with too much information is an essential ingredient to personal success in the twenty-first century. But how can we use digital media so that they make us empowered participants rather than passive receivers, grounded, well-rounded people rather than multitasking basket cases? In Net Smart, cyberculture expert Howard Rheingold shows us how to use social media intelligently, humanely, and, above all, mindfully. Mindful use of digital media means thinking about what we are doing, cultivating an ongoing inner inquiry into how we want to spend our time. Rheingold outlines five fundamental digital literacies, online skills that will help us do this: attention, participation, collaboration, critical consumption of information (or "crap detection"), and network smarts. He explains how attention works, and how we can use our attention to focus on the tiny relevant portion of the incoming tsunami of information. He describes the quality of participation that empowers the best of the bloggers, netizens, tweeters, and other online community participants; he examines how successful online collaborative enterprises contribute new knowledge to the world in new ways; and he teaches us a lesson on networks and network building. Rheingold points out that there is a bigger social issue at work in digital literacy, one that goes beyond personal empowerment. If we combine our individual efforts wisely, it could produce a more thoughtful society: countless small acts like publishing a Web page or sharing a link could add up to a public good that enriches everybody. Howard Rheingold, an influential writer and thinker on social media, is the author ofTools for Thought: The History and Future of Mind-Expanding Technology, The Virtual Community: Homesteading on the Electronic Frontier (both published by the MIT Press), and Smart Mobs: The Next Social Revolution. As her career takes flight, the French-Italian mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre talks to presenter Sara Mohr-Pietsch about her love of baroque music, how her ballet training has influenced both her voice and stage presence, and the special musical alchemy that she experiences while collaborating with Thomas Dunford and the Jupiter Ensemble. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the late American composer Pauline Oliveros' Sonic Meditations – a series of text-based scores that instruct groups of people to practice ‘sounding' and listening together – Music Matters speaks to the improviser and saxophonist, Artur Vidal, and sound artist and researcher, Ximena Alarcón ahead of a weekend of performances at Café Oto in London. They describe how Oliveros' works broke with the conventions that separate composer, performer, and audience, and discuss how her Sonic Meditations became the blueprint for the composer's hugely influential Deep Listening school. As China eases its Covid restrictions, Sara speaks to the Shanghai-based journalist Rudolph Tang to learn how the country's classical music sector is returning to business after the pandemic. And, during rehearsals for Richard Jones' new production of Rheingold at English National Opera, Sara joins the musicologist John Deathridge backstage to hear more about his new translation of the first instalment of Wagner's Ring Cycle. She asks the musicologist Barbara Eichner about the nuances of creating a convincing, contemporary translation of High German epic poetry, and is joined by ENO's Head of Music, Martin Fitzpatrick, and music critic at the New York Times, Zachary Woolf, to discuss whether the enterprise of translating foreign language operas into an audience's vernacular remains relevant.

In this episode of Beer Travelers, we visit Brooklyn, New York, with its frenetic pace to its quiet neighborhood bars, and all the haze, lager, and sour beers you could ever want. Brooklyn was once one of the world's great brewing centers. Home to nearly 50 breweries in 1900, the borough brewed a ton of beer under brands names like Schaefer, Rheingold, and many others lost to history. But that came to an end by the mid-1970s and the borough's mashtuns went silent for the next 20 years. That was until 1987 when Steve Hindy Tom Potter decided to open up their own brewery in a warehouse district in Williamsburg. Named after the borough it inhabited, Brooklyn Brewery would go on to spread the word of craft beer around the globe and become one of the early pioneers of the resurgent modern American beer scene. It took a while for brewing to catch on again in Brooklyn but slowly others opened, including Kelso and Sixpoint. And then there was the third wave of craft brewers, with names such as Other Half, Threes, and Finback. Today, Brooklyn's beer scene is top notch and the borough's bars and breweries make for an easy and exciting night out. After falling in love with it after my first visit, I trek down to Brooklyn a couple times a year including in December for an annual holiday themed pub and brewery crawl. It remains a favorite place to visit and drink and I look forward to exploring it with two great local experts.Courtney Iseman is a freelance writer who has written engaging pieces for Vinepair, Craft Beer and Brewing, as well as her own newsletter, Hugging the Bar. She's a compelling voice in beer and has written extensively about everything from diversity and inclusion to her favorite local Brooklyn pubs, including about the bar owned by our second guest.Chris Maestro is a DJ, avid record collector, educator, and also the co-owner with his wife of Bierwax, a beer bar with outposts in both Brooklyn and Queens. The Prospect Heights based bar focuses on great beer and music, played analog style from one of Chris's thousands of vinyl records that line the back of the bar. He was in the beer business before opening his own shop and is a Brooklyn native. It's a big borough and there's a lot of ground to cover in this episode. There was a time when New York City was dying a fast death. The slums were warzones, the government bankrupt and sputtering. Mobsters disassembled one another nightly and dropped hefty bags off the Canarsie pier. Drug use was rampant, supplied by the most efficient black market since prohibition. Gangs rumbled in the city's playgrounds, each battle busted up by the sound of gunfire or a police siren. Co-eds from out of town were raped and sent home shattered. Large sections of real estate, former ghettos, were now ghost towns, abandoned, burnt, and left to the squatters. It was a city of vacant lots turned dumpsite, a city in which four murders a night was the norm, where pedestrians routinely dodged angel-dust timebombs and young savage baby boomers washed down black beauties with Rheingold out of a can, where each glance into the shadows was an assault upon civilized sensibilities, a derelict Big Apple, rotten at the core, with no signs of hope. And for a year, there was the scariest shadow of them all, Son of Sam, a terrifying spectre of sadism, and ritualistic blood sacrifice. From a new point of view, this book will take an unblinking look at the deadly events as they unfolded against a backdrop of a moribund metropolis. For the first time, using dozens of first-time interviews with terrorized victims, mostly women, The Wicked King Wicker will examine the psychology of fear mastered by the purported serial killer.
