Matt and Lucy (Robbie Williams Rewind) join Nick to discuss the Michael Gracey-directed music biopic Better Man and all things Robbie Williams!Send us a text
But this isn't just another paint-by-numbers rock biopic.

"Better Man" had its world premiere at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its elaborately staged and choreographed musical sequences from director Michael Gracey ("The Greatest Showman") and the raw honesty with which global pop star Robbie Williams allowed his story to be told (all the while being portrayed on-screen by a CGI monkey nonetheless). Gracey and Williams were both kind enough to spend some time speaking with Daniel Howat and Dan Bayer, respectively, about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Paramount Pictures and is up for your consideration for this year's Academy Awards in all eligible categories, including Best Visual Effects. B etter Man is a 2024 biographical musical film co-written, produced and directed by Michael Gracey about the life of British pop singer Robbie Williams. Williams is portrayed as an anthropomorphic chimpanzee with CGI, performed by Jonno Davies using motion capture, and voiced by both Williams and Davies. Steve Pemberton, Kate Mulvany, Alison Steadman, and Damon Herriman also star. Better Man premiered at the 51st Telluride Film Festival on 30 August 2024. It was released in the United States on 25 December 2024, and in Australia and the United Kingdom on 26 December. The film received positive reviews from critics but was a box office bomb.
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Ema Sasic, Dan Bayer, Cody Dericks, Will Mavity & Tom O'Brien to review and discuss the latest film from Michael Gracey, "Better Man" starring Robbie Williams, Jonno Davies, Steve Pemberton, Damon Herriman, Raechelle Banno, Alison Steadman & Kate Mulvany. A musical biopic about English poster Robbie Williams, the audacious, R-rated film portrays him on screen through its entire runtime as a CGI monkey with many musical numbers incorporating Robbie's most famous songs.
On this episode of The Movie Podcast, Daniel travels to Los Angeles to sit down with the legendary Robbie Williams, Jonno Davies, Raechelle Banno, and Director Michael Gracey to discuss BETTER MAN, the true story of the meteoric rise, dramatic fall, and remarkable resurgence of British pop superstar Robbie Williams. The film tells the story of Williams' life, but he is portrayed as a CG-animated anthropomorphic chimpanzee because, as he puts it, he always felt “less evolved than other people.” Better Man is now playing exclusively in theatres by Paramount Pictures.

It's Boxing Day, but we've got more than just leftovers in today's show—we're just as stuffed full of gourmet goodies as we hope you are right now... A fresh new guest interview this week with RaMell Ross, director of the awards-tipped ‘Nickel Boys'. Based on the Pulitzer prize winning novel by Colson Whitehead, it follows the growing friendship between two boys in racially segregated 1960s Florida, Ellwood and Turner, who find themselves unwillingly enrolled in an abusive reform school. Simon sits down with RaMell to talk about his innovative filmmaking approach—and we think you'll be hearing plenty more from him in the future... Reviews of ‘Better Man', the Robbie Wiliams biopic from ‘Greatest Showman' director Michael Gracey that chronicles the pop superstar's infamous monkeying around by making him an actual chimp; ‘The Order', the 80s-set thriller starring Jude Law as a neo-Nazi-hunting FBI agent; and ‘How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies', the Thai comedy-drama in which broke university dropout M cozies up to his ailing grandmother in the hope of inheriting her massive fortune. Plus Mark's top 5 films of the year—and bottom 5 cinematic stinkers too. (JEM is this correct—these in this episode?) Merry Christmas one and all—wishing you much festive film-watching... My quick rundown of better than expected rags-to-riches and beyond story of pop star Robbie Williams shot primarily in Australia, directed by Michael Gracey;the maestro responsible for The Greatest Showman (2017) So it makes sense why this is a brazen, showy film with memorable musical sequences, all taken from Robbie's 'mostly' wild life. Yes Robbie is a CGI monkey.BETTER MAN a memorable cast includes;Damon Herriman, Jonno Davies, Raechelle Banno, Kate Mulvaney and Robbie himself as narrator

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Just like that, the much discussed, but never official, Nova Disney Plus series, has gone from rumored to confirmed with Deadline reporting the onboarding of a showrunner: Criminal Minds' Ed Bernero. Bernero, who also co-created the Criminal Minds spinoff, Suspect Behavior, will serve as writer and showrunner for the Richard Ryder-focused series. Additionally, off the heels of last week's reports about Chris Evans' return to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, last Friday, Variety broke the news that Evans' frequent scene partner, Hayley Atwell is also expected to reprise her role as Agent Peggy Carter. While the DCU officially launched earlier this month with the premiere of Creature Commandos on Max, James Gunn's first live action offering, next summer's Superman, unveiled its official poster via social media Monday morning. The image, a motion graphic, is an obvious allusion to Christopher Reeves' take on the character, and showcases David Corenswett's Superman ascending in flight, accompanied by a remix of John Williams' classic score and a tagline that reads, ‘Look up.' Exciting details; all of which preempts the gut punch that the official teaser trailer will not release until Thursday… (Thanks, James…) Elsewhere, horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan has been given the go ahead to write his standalone Clayface film. Without a director attached yet, it's unclear whether this film will be a part of the Matt Reeves The Batman/Penguin crime Elseworld, though Gunn referred to it as a DCU film. Currently slated for a September 2026 release, Flanagan previously described it as a horror/thriller/tragedy while expressing interest back as early as 2021. Kraven the Hunter, the latest and perhaps final entry of Sony's Spider-Man-less universe, opened this weekend to a disappointing $11 million total, a franchise low. In the wake of this fumble, just the most recent in a long string, many a Sony insider have come out of the woodwork to spill the tea, resulting in the internet being ablaze with claims that the studio is finally pulling the plug. But, not so fast! While it does sound like Sony will stop making spin-offs without Spider-Man, the studio remains quote, ‘deeply invested' in projects that include the marquee character and his many variations, including the Spider-Man Noir series that is in production in partnership with Amazon. Michael Gracey is in talks to direct Disney's live-action Tangled with a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson from the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. Variety has learned that Austin Butler is set to star in Luca Guadagnino‘s new interpretation of the book “American Psycho” by Bret Easton Ellis for Lionsgate. Per Deadline, Joseph Quinn is reportedly set to play George Harrison in Sam Mendes' upcoming Beatles biopic series. Barry Keoghan will portray Ringo Starr, Paul Mescal is expected to play Paul McCartney, and Harris Dickinson is the frontrunner for John Lennon. Marvel Comics announced Godzilla vs. Marvel, a six-issue one-shot series marking their first Godzilla crossover in nearly 50 years. The series spans different time periods, starting with a Fantastic Four story. Malcolm in the Middle is returning for a four-episode revival on Disney+ to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Original stars Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek will reprise their roles as Malcolm and his parents, Hal and Lois. The Hollywood Reporter claims Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach pitched a Barbie sequel to Warner Bros., but both their rep and the studio deny it. “There is no legitimacy to this,” says the filmmakers' rep, while Warner Bros. calls the report “inaccurate.” The previously announced DCU film Dynamic Duo has received a release date of June 30th, 2028.

Famed UK singer-songwriter Robbie Williams stars in a grand retelling of his life and career - while taking on a new simian alter ego. Better Man depicts the star's career, from his childhood, to his Take That days, to his solo works, exposing all the pitfalls of fame in between - with Williams being represented by a CGI chimp. He says he felt compelled to do a biopic after a successful meeting with the film's director, Michael Gracey of The Greatest Showman fame. "The first time I saw it, I was like - this is mindblowing. It's absolutely incredible. But then I was like - hang on, I'm prone to ego and narcissism, maybe I just think it's the best thing I'd ever seen because it's about me." On episode 249 of the AwardsWatch Podcast it's another all editors edition as yours truly, Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello are packed and ready to head to mountains of Colorado for the 51st Telluride Film Festival with special guest Christina Birro of Pop Culture Confidential. As Telluride famously does, the actual lineup of films isn't released until the day of the festival (August 30) but with Venice, Toronto and New York announcements and designations of films as a 'world premiere,' 'international premiere,' 'North American premiere' or 'Canadian premiere' we have a pretty good idea of many of the films we'll be seeing, with all important world premiere titles that we'll likely be seeing before anyone like Edward Berger's papal thriller Conclave (Focus Features) starring Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow and Stanley Tucci, Michael Gracey's Robbie Williams biopic Better Man (Paramount Pictures) with the UK star playing himself, Jason Reitman's Saturday Night (Sony Pictures), telling the story of the first night of SNL in 1975 with Gabriel LaBelle, Dylan O'Brien, Rachell Sennott, Cory Michael Smith and Willem Dafoe, Malcolm Washington's adaptation of August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Piano Lesson starring Samuel L. Jackson, Danielle Deadwyler and John David Washington and RaMell Ross's Nickel Boys (Amazon MGM), adapting Colson Whitehead's Nickel Boys with Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Hamish Linklater and more. We also expect a healthy selection of Sundance and Cannes features to make their way to Telluride for a fall resurgence like A Real Pain, Emilia Pérez, Anora, The Seed of the Sacred Fig and more. Telluride medallions are also a topic of conversation with three traditionally up for grabs. Based on the expected lineup we think it will be Jason Reitman, Angelina Jolie and Samuel L. Jackson but there's a handful of possible contenders here. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h10m. We will be back the week after next to recap the 2024 Telluride Film Festival. Till then, let's get into it. Mark Wike's music supervision credits include Hulu's Emmy Award-winning series by Steven Spielberg, Animaniacs; Twentieth Century Fox's The Greatest Showman, directed by Michael Gracey; and The Sitter, directed by David Gordon Green; FX Networks' Damages; and Netflix's Bloodline. The series stars Ben Mendelsohn, Juliette Binoche, Maisie Williams and John Malkovich.
In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing THE GREATEST SHOWMAN (2017), from writers Jenny Bicks and Bill Condon, the film is directed by Michael Gracey. A poor young man grows up to become the famed P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman ) in this musical biopic on the man who crafted the art of the spectacle through his sensational presentations of oddities. Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya round out the primary roles in the story and include music from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul who went on to win Academy Awards for their music in LA LA LAND. The film clocks in at 1 h and 45 m and is rated PG. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. This episode of the podcast goes out to Miss Angie - happy belated birthday my friend! Probably the biggest movie of 2022 is Avatar: The Way of Water. Thirteen years after the first Avatar movie, James Cameron finally releases its sequel and it did not disappoint. With a big movie I needed a big guest to help me review it. I asked content creator Justine Bijou to come on the podcast. You may know her from twitch or TikTok but more recently she has started her very own podcast called Just Justine Time that we discuss in this episode. I had her pick out a throwback movie and she chose one of my favorite musicals, The Greatest Showman. The Greatest Showman (2017): Directed by Michael Gracey. Celebrates the birth of show business and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.

The Greatest Showman was a 2017 musical drama film directed by visual effects artist Michael Gracey in his directing debut. It followed a dramatic re-interpretation of the life of American showman P.T. Barnum, touching upon the creation of his American Museum, and eventually his famous circus. It featured performances by Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Zendaya, and many others in a film that was roundly dismissed by critics for taking too many historical liberties, but was a major box office success. On this episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott deliver exactly what's due to this stirring musical tribute to a man who owned human zoos. Joined by Dwight Stearns of the No Refunds podcast, the trio dive into The Greatest Showman and go on a journey filled with bright colors, CGI animals, and Imagine Dragons-like show numbers....with Lilz and Scott!

L'autore P.T.

On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are belting out some majestic tunes as we kick off an entire month of movie musicals! Oh, what a beautiful day. We’re starting things off with the Michael Gracey film that’s all about chasing your dreams, The Greatest Showman. You may know Mr. Phineas Taylor Barnum from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus from when just about all of us were kids, but did you know the story about how he became the man we know him as today? Well, according to this film, he went through quite the rollercoaster ride to become a venerated performing star. Okay, but spoiler warning, this one is a dramatization of events that happened over a hundred years ago, so you’ll have to forgive it for taking some artistic liberties with the story it tells. That’s just how show biz goes. P.T. Barnum knew it and now you know it. Does that mean this film isn’t a rousing celebration of artistic drive, amazing showmanship, and the similarities and differences in us all? Heck no! It’s all of those things and more. Plus, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more engaging film with such catchy songs. Seriously, we still can’t get them out of our heads. We were also fascinated by the personal arcs all the characters went through in this film. It wasn’t just Barnum that became someone greater than he was. We see the wonderful people in his show learn their true worth. We see his business partner realize that love is more important than social prejudices. We see separate people become a family of like-minded, loving performers. Steven was a huge fan of the sound design that was featured in the film. It was very competently made, but when it’s a musical we’re talking about, the sound design tends to play second fiddle to the songs. They were stellar. They felt modern, but not in a way that was out of place or inappropriate for the movie. It all just sounded so great. Part of what makes this movie special is the combination of wonderful music and eye-catching visuals, which Sean was a big fan of. It’s amazing to us that a first time director could craft such a confident, great looking film. From moment one, it displays bold, soaring camera work and glossy lighting. This is a film that not only sounds amazing, but also looks amazing. Stay tuned for next month’s musical! It’s going to be an older one and just as fun. He further showed how singular points and isolated loops were affected by conical projection. He gave the proof of Descartes's rule of signs which is to be found in most modern works. It is not clear whether Descartes ever proved it strictly, and Newton seems to have regarded it as obvious. De Gua de Malves was acquainted with many of the French philosophes during the last decades of theAncien Régime. He died in a helicopter crash in Karaj while filming the documentaryLe Vent des amoureux (The Lovers' Wind), during a helicopter-tour in 1970 at the age of 48.2 June 1990 – Rex Harrison - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rex_HarrisonSir Reginald Carey Harrison, known as Rex Harrison, was an English actor of stage and screen. Harrison began his career on the stage in 1924. He made his West End debut in 1936 appearing in the Terence Rattigan play French Without Tears, in what was his breakthrough role. He won his first Tony Award for his performance as Henry VIII in the play Anne of the Thousand Days in 1949. He won his second Tony for the role of Professor Henry Higgins in the stage production of My Fair Lady in 1957. In addition to his stage career, Harrison also appeared in numerous films. His first starring role was opposite Vivien Leigh in the romantic comedy Storm in a Teacup . His other roles since then include Cleopatra as Julius Cesar, My Fair Lady ( reprising his role as Henry Higgins which earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor), and the title role of the English doctor who talks to animals, Doctor Dolittle (1967). Harrison was not by any objective standards a singer (his talking on pitch style he used in My Fair Lady would be adopted by many other classically trained actors with limited vocal ranges); the music was usually written to allow for long periods of recitative, or "speaking to the music". Nevertheless, "Talk to the Animals", which Harrison performed in Doctor Dolittle, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1967. He died from pancreatic cancer in Manhattan,New York City at the age of 82.2 June 2017 – Peter Sallis - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_SallisEnglish actor, known for his work on British television. He was the voice of Wallace in the Academy Award-winning Wallace and Gromit films and played Norman "Cleggy" Clegg in Last of the Summer Wine from its 1973 inception until the final episode in 2010, making him the only actor to appear in all 295 episodes. He also voiced Rat in The Wind in the Willows animated series, appeared in Danger Man in the episode "Find and Destroy" as Gordon; the BBCDoctor Who serial "The Ice Warriors" as renegade scientist Elric Penley and in an episode of The Persuaders! "The Long Goodbye" . While a student in 1983, animator Nick Park wrote to Sallis asking him if he would voice his character Wallace, an eccentric inventor. Sallis agreed to do so for a donation of £50 to his favourite charity. The work was eventually released in 1989 and Aardman Animations' Wallace and Gromit: A Grand Day Out went on to win a BAFTA award.Sallis reprised his role in the Oscar- and BAFTA Award-winning films The Wrong Trousers in 1993 and A Close Shave in 1995. His last role as Wallace was in 2010's Wallace and Gromit's World of Invention. Sallis then retired due to ill health, with Ben Whitehead taking over the role. He died from natural causes in Denville Hall, London at the age of 96.Famous Birthdays2 June 1774 – William Lawson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Lawson_(explorer)English-born Australian explorer, land owner, grazier and politician who migrated to Sydney,New South Wales in 1800. Along with his close friends and colleagues Gregory Blaxland and William Wentworth, he pioneered the first successful crossing of the Blue Mountains by European settlers. Lawson commenced his exploration of the Blue Mountains alongside Blaxland and William Charles Wentworth on 11 May 1813. He kept a journal of the expedition titled, 'W Lawsons Narrative. Across Blue Mountains'. After the crossing, Lawson, like Blaxland and Wentworth, was rewarded with a grant of 1,000 acres (4 km²) of land by Governor Macquarie. He selected his land along the Campbells River, part of the Bathurst settlement for which he was appointed Commandant until his retirement in 1824. Whilst Commandant he continued to undertake expeditions, and in 1821, with Constable Blackman, discovered the Cudgegong River and further explored Mudgee and its outlying regions. In 1963 Lawson was honoured, together with Blaxland and Wentworth, on a postage stamp issued by Australia Post depicting the Blue Mountains crossing. He was born in Middlesex.2 June 1904 – Johnny Weissmuller - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_WeissmullerAustro-Hungarian-born American competition swimmer, water polo player and actor. He was known for playing Edgar Rice Burroughs' ape man Tarzan in films of the 1930s and 1940s and for having one of the best competitive swimming records of the 20th century. Weissmuller was one of the world's fastest swimmers in the 1920s, winning five Olympic gold medals for swimming and one bronze medal for water polo. He was the first to break the one minute barrier for 100-meter freestyle, and the first to swim 440-yard freestyle under five minutes. He won fifty-two U.S. national championships, set more than 50 world records (spread over both freestyle and backstroke),and was purportedly undefeated in official competition for the entirety of his competitive career. After retiring from competitions, he became the sixth actor to portray Tarzan, a role he played in twelve feature films. Dozens of other actors have also played Tarzan, but Weissmuller is by far the best known. Weissmuller's distinctive Tarzan yell is still often used in films in his legacy. His acting career began when he signed a seven-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and played the role of Tarzan in Tarzan the Ape Man (1932). The movie was a huge success and Weissmuller became an overnight international sensation. The author of Tarzan, Edgar Rice Burroughs, was pleased with Weissmuller, although he so hated the studio's depiction of a Tarzan who barely spoke English. In a total of 12 Tarzan films, Weissmuller earned an estimated $2,000,000 and established himself as what many movie historians consider the definitive Tarzan. When Weissmuller finally left the role of Tarzan, he immediately traded his loincloth costume for a slouch hat and safari suit for the role of Jungle Jim for Columbia. He made 13 Jungle Jim films between 1948 and 1954. He was born in Szabadfalva (Freidorf).2 June 1961 – Liam Cunningham - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liam_CunninghamIrish stage and screen actor. He was born inEast Wall,Dublin.4 June 1950 – Clifford Stoll - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clifford_StollClifford Paul "Cliff" Stoll, American astronomer, author and teacher. He is best known for his investigation in 1986, while working as a systems administrator at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, that led to the capture of hackerMarkus Hess, and for Stoll's subsequent book The Cuckoo's Egg, in which he details the investigation. Stoll has written three books, articles in the non-specialist press and is a frequent contributor to the mathematics YouTube channel Numberphile. In 1986, while employed as a systems administrator at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Stoll investigated a tenacious hacker—later identified as KGB recruit Markus Hess—who stole passwords, pirated multiple computer accounts, and attempted to breach US military security. After identifying the intrusion, Stoll set up a honeypot for Hess, eventually tracking him down and passing details to the authorities. It is recognized as one of the first examples of digital forensics. In his 1995 book Silicon Snake Oil and an accompanying article in Newsweek, Stoll called the prospect of e-commerce "baloney". Stoll also raised questions about the influence of the Internet on future society, and whether it would be beneficial. Stoll sells blown glass Klein bottles on the internet through his company Acme Klein Bottles. He stores his inventory in the crawlspace underneath his home and accesses it when needed with a homemade miniature robotic forklift. He runs the company out of his home. He was born in Buffalo, New York.Events of Interest2 June 1835 – 1835 – P. T. He went to New York and started showing his first exhibit, an elderly, blind, black woman he touted as being 160 years old and formerly the nurse of George Washington. (The woman died the following year, age about 80.) He is widely credited with coining the adage "There's a sucker born every minute",although no proof can be found of him saying this. By 7.15pm, he was flying over the small French town of Sangatte, where the present-day Channel Tunnel emerges. Leaning out of his aeroplane, he threw overboard three weighted envelopes, each containing the message: ‘Greetings to the Auto Club of France He was over Sangatte, France, at 19.15 and back in Dover at 20.00. The journey had taken 95 minutes and he circled the Castle in triumph! Over 3,000 people witnessed the event, after which Charles was carried through the town shoulder high. The European Space Agency's Mars Express probe launches from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Express#LaunchThe mission, called Mars Express, will map the planet, use a powerful radar to probe its surface for evidence of water, and measure water concentrations in the atmosphere. The spacecraft was launched on June 2, 2003 at 23:45 local time from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, using a Soyuz-FG/Fregat rocket. The Mars Express and Fregat booster were initially put into a 200 km Earth parking orbit, then the Fregat was fired again to put the spacecraft into a Mars transfer orbit. The Mars Express was the first Russian-launched probe to successfully make it out of low Earth orbit since the Soviet Union fell. The space vehicle, which cost $350 million was initially put into Earth orbit, and about 90 minutes later was given the final push to send it on a six-month journey to Mars — the ESA's first interplanetary mission. Mars Express is to remain in its Martian orbit for at least one Martian year, 687 Earth days.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes -https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094RSS -http://www.thatsnotcanonproductions.com/topshelfnerdspodcast?format=rssInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/General EnquiriesEmail - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comRate & Review us on Podchaser - https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/nerds-amalgamated-623195

We chat with re-recording mixer Mike Prestwood Smith about his recent work on Rocketman and explore his creative process recreating the iconic songs that defined Elton John’s career and personal journey. Rocketman is a 2019 biographical musical film based on the life of musician Elton John. Directed by Dexter Fletcher and written by Lee Hall, it stars Taron Egerton as John, with Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard. The film follows John's early days as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music to his musical partnership with Bernie Taupin. The film is titled after John's 1972 song "Rocket Man". An Elton John biopic had been in development for almost two decades, with the project going through studios including Walt Disney Studios and Focus Features, directors including Michael Gracey, and actors including Tom Hardy and Justin Timberlake. After creative differences with Focus halted an initial production start in 2014, John took the project to Paramount Pictures, with Egerton and Fletcher signing on in April 2018. Principal photography began in August 2018 and was completed later that year.

“I think I've had an idea. I’m putting together a podcast. It’s a podcast where people can hear things they’ve never heard before.” This week, returning guest Stephanie Chuang comes back onto the show to talk about the 2017 blockbuster The Greatest Showman directed by Michael Gracey. Following his stint as Wolverine in Logan, Hugh Jackman embraces P.T. Barnum as he helps retell the story of Barnum. On this episode we discuss if the erasure of a historical figure’s misdeeds for the sake of an uplifting story is appropriate, how a film can use musical numbers to cover up its flaws, and the overall ridiculousness of the plot and the vehicles used to advance the narrative. Don’t miss out on our 24th episode because, as “This podcast is the greatest show!”. On this week’s episode: Stephanie Chuang and Cynthia Li. Manga Mavericks @ Movies Month is going strong! We’ve been posting new movie reviews on our Youtube channel every day and plan to do so for the entire month of May! These reviews will also be uploaded to our podcast feed just a few days afterward. I’ve just put up our Ghost in the Shell/Power Rangers podcast, a pairing of two remakes of beloved 90’s franchises that weren’t particularly well-received. Check it out and look forward to more new @ Movies podcasts popping up on our feed this month! Of course, @ Movies isn’t all we’re doing this month! We’ve got regular Manga Mavericks episodes planned too, just like the one you’re about to listen to! This week’s episode is kind of a back-to-basics affair. Both your regular Mavericks are present, there’s a normal amount of news to talk about, and we cover a few recent Jump Starts and one-shots to cap off the show! A pretty normal episode compared to the past couple of atypical entries. Honestly, the only thing that’s missing is a Bookscan list to talk about, but I’m sure we’ll have plenty to say about the next one. Before you listen to the show, I want to emphasize the content warning for the Gerard Jones story. There are some extremely graphic details we had to acknowledge that should be sickening to any sane human being. It made me physically ill when we were discussing it, and then again when I had to edit it. If you can’t stomach hearing about sexual violence towards children, then please, you are better off skipping that news piece because it is extremely upsetting. But hey, this isn’t a dour podcast by any stretch. I mean, we got to talk about loop theory, kaiju that can shoot lasers out of its arms, and a talking house that can transform into a giant mech! It’s irresponsible to ignore real-world problems to consume entertainment, but our discussion of these recent Jump Starts was a nice reminder of how valuable it can be to have a good manga to brighten up a bad day. Editor's Note, 2020: As a consequence of Nobuhiro Watsuki's charges being dropped (as discussed on this podcast), we've since reevaluated our feelings on Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's own allegations and are less enthusiastic and supportive of him and his work. We still feel our discussion of Build King is worth sharing, but we wanted to note that our feelings on this comic and its creator are more complicated and critical now. This podcast is very much a product of its time, and we humbly ask you to keep this in mind as you listen to it. Come one, come all to The Greatest Showman, Michael Gracey’s musical retelling (or is that reshaping?) of the life of circus impresario P.T. Barnum. Paul and Arlo are joined by first-time guest Nate Curtiss, whose obsession with the film rivals Paul’s well-documented mania. The gang discusses the film’s message of tolerance and inclusion, why it’s a better musical than La La Land, and if it’s a problem that the filmmakers have refashioned Barnum as a beacon of progressivism. Plus, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back (did they ever leave?), which is making some fans unhappy (aren’t they always?); and The Cloverfield Paradox was a surprise post-Super Bowl release on Netflix. Next: last year’s Four-Color Flashback finally comes to a close, as Kenn Edwards joins us to discuss Y: The Last Man - Vol. 10: Whys and Wherefores. The first in our season of films by Alejandro González Iñárritu (the accents are getting a workout this month!) is his 2000 breakout feature film, AMORES PERROS. We talk about differing reactions to the movie (two of them from one person, over 15 years!), the way that its violent themes often inform the way that it's put together, and the essentially very optimistic ending.
