Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 19, 2025 is: juggernaut • JUG-er-nawt • noun A juggernaut is something (such as a force, campaign, or movement) that is extremely large and powerful and cannot be stopped. // The team is a juggernaut this year, winning more games than any team before it has. See the entry > Examples: "[Judd] Apatow talked about the box office success of 'Wicked,' the Universal musical that became a juggernaut over the holiday season and has been an awards darling ..." — Cynthia Littleton, Variety, 8 Feb. 2025 Did you know? In the early 14th century, Franciscan missionary Friar Odoric brought to Europe the story of an enormous carriage that carried an image of the Hindu god Vishnu (whose title was Jagannāth, literally, "lord of the world") through the streets of India in religious processions. Odoric reported that some worshippers deliberately allowed themselves to be crushed beneath the vehicle's wheels as a sacrifice to Vishnu. That story was likely an exaggeration or misinterpretation of actual events, but it spread throughout Europe. The tale caught the imagination of English listeners, and they began using juggernaut to refer to any massive vehicle (such as a steam locomotive) and to any other enormous entity with powerful crushing capabilities. While the word is still used sometimes in British English to refer to a very large, heavy truck (also called a "juggernaut lorry"), juggernaut is more commonly used figuratively for a relentless force, entity, campaign, or movement, as in "a political/economic/cultural juggernaut."

Here in Jagannātha Purī, the chief of the devotees, Haridāsa Ṭhākura —in general society, which was concerned with caste, creed, rules, and regulations, Haridāsa Ṭhākura was not well considered within the Hindu culture. And even with Advaita Ācārya back in Navadvīpa, when performing a śrāddha ceremony at the end, you're supposed to offer the prasāda to the most qualified Vaiṣṇava that's available. And Advaita Ācārya would take that śrāddha-pātra, and He would give it to Haridāsa Ṭhākura. And Haridāsa Ṭhākura said, "This isn't going to look good on Facebook, social media. They're going to put out criticism that, 'Why are you giving it to a Muslim-bodied person?'" And Advaita Ācārya said, "What Caitanya Mahāprabhu said, what the Bhāgavatam says: kirāta-hūṇāndhra-pulinda-pulkaśā, ābhīra-śumbhā yavanāḥ khasādayaḥ, ye 'nye ca pāpā yad-apāśrayāśrayāḥ, śudhyanti tasmai prabhaviṣṇave namaḥ (SB 2.4.18)—the only qualification is that one is surrendered to the Lord, and by the power of the Lord's mercy, that person becomes an exalted soul, not by some birth or social position. 'Brahmāṇḍa bhramite kono bhāgyavān jīva guru-kṛṣṇa-kṛpāya pāya bhakti-latā-bīja' (CC. Madhya 19.151) means we are aimlessly moving from one body to the next, one universe to the next, and then, by the grace of Kṛṣṇa, one gets a guru, by the grace of the Guru, one gets Kṛṣṇa. And so, Lord Nityānanda is the original guru, and he reveals the importance of Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu to all the devotees and reveals that He's the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Caitanya Mahāprabhu took sanyāsa and He headed for this place, Jagannātha Puri. And this is a stop before you get to Puri. It's about six miles away. Of course, they were walking; this is pretty far along from Navadvīpa when they stopped here. From the Caitanya Charitāmrita you will note that they stopped in various places and what did they do? They engaged in Kṛṣṇa Kathā. In fact Nityānanda had heard from others the story of Kṣīra-corā gopīnātha. He told that story here, and the devotees just enjoyed it. Everything was going fine until Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu asked Nityānanda to hold his dandā. You know when you ask somebody to hold your bead bag and say you'll be right back? Then you come back and say, "Where's my bag?" "Oh, I don't have it anymore." I never had that happen, but somebody actually cut off my śikhā when they were helping buzz me up. Since then, I learned how to do it myself. They thought it was funny. I didn't think it was that funny. They were like, "ha ha ha, it'll grow back." It's a big deal to a brahmacārī, okay? So, Nityānanda had broken his dandā in three parts and threw it away, apparently in this river. When Caitanya Mahāprabhu came back and asked for His dandā, Nitai said, "You know, you broke it because you were in ecstasy. I tried to save you from fainting, and we both fell on the dandā and it broke and now it's gone." He had different excuses for why the dandā was gone. Now both Vṛndāvana Dāsa Ṭhākura and ā Dāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī, and then our ācāryas like Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, mention the importance of this pastime. It is still enigmatic, even though they give different descriptions, because it's enigmatic in and of itself that Supreme is one, but He expands Himself into many. That's why I brought up that verse 'Vadanti tat tattva-vidas tattvaṁ yaj jñānam advayam' in an attempt to build a foundational basis for this talk today. Because there's a way in which it's incomprehensible how the Supreme is everything and He is one, advaya but at the same time he has variety. But it makes a lot of sense to me anyway because the Supreme is all-cognizant, full of bliss, eternality, and ānanda. and that's why I also mentioned that for there to be ananda there has to be loving relationship. So, how is this a significant and loving relationship between Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Lord Nityānanda? Why did He break the dandā? Even more mysteriously, why did Caitanya Mahāprabhu dictate from within that Nityānanda should break the dandā? It is even more curious why Caitanya Mahāprabhu then became angry if he's the one, as Vṛndāvana Dāsa Ṭhākura says, who inspired Nitāi to break it the first place? A personal meditation of mine that I recommend is to think of the Ācāryas while chanting. In other words, you can start with the disciplic succession coming from Jagannāth Dāsa Bābājī Mahārāja and imagine that you've come to his Kuṭīra and just offered Daṇḍavats for half an hour and then taken some dust from there. Then take permission to sit outside and listen to him chant and chant along with him. And then you can go down to Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, down the line. Even if you have a picture of the Ācāryas, that's why we have their pictures—to remember this 'sato vṛtteḥ,' following their footsteps in their mood. It's a very sweet meditation to just remember that we're following their footsteps and actually be with them when we're chanting. It's a very enlivening kind of practice. So Bhaktivinod Ṭhākur had come to see the Siddha Mahātmā and received many important instructions from him. Around those instructions for worshiping Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu in the age of Kali Yuga, he passed them on to his followers and disciples. Therefore, this particular place is our home. Home is where the heart is. The mood of bhakti that we've received through our disciplic succession, and continue to receive today, comes from the great souls, and very specifically, Jagannāth Dās Bābājī Mahārāj, who gave us this strong emphasis on worshiping Nityānanda and Gaurāṅga in the Age of Kali. In order to come to the perfection of life, not to approach Kṛṣṇa directly, but to go through the mercy of Lord Caitanya. Prabhupāda had the devotees that were in early ISKCON in the '70s come to Māyāpur, and Vṛndāvana and sometimes, Jagannātha Purī on the way between the two. And he invited the devotees from all over the world. He said all of you should come here and meet with me here in Māyāpur. And he said we should discuss unity in diversity. We'd have kīrtanas. And Prabhupāda said that should be the time of discussion here in Māyāpur. It was a time when, in a fledgling movement, devotees from all over the world who were preaching in various countries would come together and meet one another and discuss how it was going in various places. In the afternoon, we go from the temple such that it was the living facilities here were very rough. If you think that your room is a little simple. I hate to tell these back-when-I-was-a-boy stories, but the room I stayed in as a brahmacārī was on the wall that was the simplest of dwellings because there weren't enough rooms. The wall was there, and they just weaned some plywood off of the wall and then cut a little hole so we could get in there. The floor was dirt. There was no latrine at all, just a big pit in the middle of the field with a kind of a fence around it. And water, there was no although were the pumps. There was no drinking water, there was no shower, there was no hot water, there was no bottled water. That didn't come until much later in the '80s here in India. And nonetheless, Prabhupāda pushed on. He invited everyone to come here because he saw that the essence was to come together, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, and discuss how we can cooperate. One of his main points was to spread the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, and devotees would come here and discuss and hear how one another were doing in the daytime. Everyone would go to the Ganges, and it wasn't as far away as it is now, but there you could walk up and down the Ganges, and every one of the leaders from different parts of the world would be sitting, and then there would be a circle of devotees around that leader all the way up the Ganges. And there'd be classes going on, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam or Bhagavad Gītā discussion. And then in the morning, Prabhupāda would give class in the temple that's there now. And in the evening, he would give darśana in these rooms. And many devotees would come and crowd in the rooms. And one evening, while we were in there and the darśana was over, one of my godbrothers, who I partnered with on book distribution, kept inviting everybody else to go out first because he had a plan that he was going to meet Prabhupāda. And when everyone was gone, he turned around and went back to Prabhupāda and asked him a question that a lot of devotees had, which is, should I live in the West, or should I move here to the dhāma? And Prabhupāda said that the West is for preaching or for sense gratification. And his indication was, if you're going to the West, then you should go there to preach. Otherwise, you will just be engulfed by sense gratification. You notice that in Prabhupāda's bedroom, he has a picture of Śrī Śrī Rādhā Govinda. Those are the deities in Brooklyn. Prabhupāda, although he was in Māyāpur, he was thinking about Rādhā Govinda every night before he took rest. But there's a section that one of my godbrothers pointed out with how he had mentioned how he was thinking about the project in New York, that he had Rādhā Govinda on the wall, but it's not retrofit. This is not a new thing that somebody put Rādhā Govinda on the wall. Those deities were on his wall when he was here. So although Prabhupāda was in the dhāma, he was thinking about the West, and he was thinking about how to expand the project. Prabhupāda said in a lecture, yoga means plus, doesn't mean minus. So this idea of adding ghee and following the order of the spiritual master—these are all plus. We have active, positive practice. It's not block out thinking, and it's not giving up everything, but it's adding Kṛṣṇa. If you add Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa is all-purifying,"sa paryagāc chukram akāyam avraṇam asnāviraḿ śuddham apāpa-viddham kavir manīṣī paribhūḥ svayambhūr yāthātathyato 'rthān vyadadhāc chāśvatībhyaḥ samābhyaḥ" (Īśo 8) He's the purifying force. 'Om apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṁ gato 'pi vā yaḥ smaret puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ sa bahyābhyantaraḥ śuciḥ'.If you remember Kṛṣṇa, then you become purified inwardly and outwardly. So just add Kṛṣṇa—that's the plus. And how to adhere to that? Remember the order of the spiritual master: "vyavasāyātmikā buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana bahu-śākhā hy anantāś ca buddhayo 'vyavasāyinām" (BG 2.41) There are so many speculations about what I can do: go here, go there, get sick, get well, hang around, and inkwell. But the fact is that if we just say, "Okay, I'm going to take the authority of Kṛṣṇa through the paramparā, I'll take my Guru guru's words; that's what I'm going to follow," then one doesn't have to be subjected to the whimsy of the mind and dragged all over the universe. One can be one-minded. And it's really helpful to have permission to do that because the mind comes up with so many excuses. Are you sure you want to be doing this, just sitting there? And there's a saying, sometimes parents would say to kids, " don't just sit there, go do something." But then there should be a book called "Don't Just Do Something, Sit There" for a change. Because the other question was, Arjuna said, "How a person fixing consciousness, can he sit?" Because he says, "How does he sit? How does he walk?" And then the question is like, can you even sit there for a minute without going somewhere else? And so all that leads to this very positive flow that The Holy Name is really beautiful and everything's there. It's enlivening—the form, the name, the līlā—everything's there in The Holy Name. And if I can just stay there long enough to get caught in that attractive flow, then I won't need anything else. It's all plus. When a person is firmly fixed in devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he is described as vīra-vrata, fully determined. Such a devotee increases his ecstasy in devotional service more and more. Thus as soon as he remembers Lord Viṣṇu, his eyes fill with tears. This is a symptom of a mahā-bhāgavata. Dhruva Mahārāja maintained himself in that devotional ecstasy, and Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu also gave us a practical example of transcendental ecstasy when He lived at Jagannātha Purī. His pastimes there are fully narrated in Caitanya-caritāmṛta.

Download the Śrīmad Devī Bhāgavatam Part 1, Skandhas 1-5: https://archive.org/details/srimaddevibhagavatampart1/page/n365 1-4. The Ṛṣis said: “O Sūta! Our minds are merged in the sea of doubt, hearing this your most wonderful saying, surpising to the whole world. The head of Janārdan Mādhava, the Lord of all, was severed from His body! And He was afterwards known as Hayagrīva, the horse-faced! Oh! what more wonder can there be than this? Whom the Vedas even praise, Whom all the Devas rest on, Who is the Cause of all causes, the ādi-deva Jagannāth (the Lord of the universe), Oh! how is it that His head came to be severed! O highly intelligent one! Describe all this to us in detail.” 5-9. Sūta said: “O Munis! Hear all attentively the glorious deeds of the supremely energetic Viṣṇu, the Deva of the Devas. Once on a time the eternal Deva Janārdana became tired after the terrible continuous battle for ten thousand years. After this the Lord Nārāyaṇa seated Himself in padmāsana in some lovely place on a level plot of ground; and placing his head on the front of his bow with the bow strung and placed erect on the ground, fell fast asleep. Viṣṇu, the Lord of Ramā, was exceedingly tired and thus he fell soon into deep sleep. At this time Indra and the other Devas, with Brahmā and Maheṣa, began a sacrifice. 10-13. Then they, for the sake of success, went to the region of Vaikuṇṭha to meet with the Deva Janārdana, the Lord of sacrifices. There the Devas, not finding Viṣṇu, came to know by dhyāna (meditation) where Bhagavān Viṣṇu was staying, and thither they went. They saw that the Lord Viṣṇu, the Deva of the Devas was lying unconscious, being under the arms of yoga-nidrā. Therefore they took their seats there. Seeing the Lord of the universe asleep, Brahmā, Rudra and the other Devas became anxious. 14-18. Indra then addressed the Devas: ’O best of the Suras! Now what is to be done? How shall we rouse Bhagavān from His sleep? Now think of the means by which this can be effected.’ Hearing Indra’s words Śambhu said: ’O good Devas! Now we must finish our sacrificial work. But if the sleep of Bhagavān be disturbed, He would get angry.’ Hearing Śaṅkara’s words, Paramesthī Brahmā created vamrī insects (a sort of white ants) so that they might eat up the forepart of the bow that was lying on the ground causing the other end to rise up and thus break His sleep. Thus the Devas’ purpose would, no doubt, be fulfilled. Thus settling his mind, the eternal Deva Brahmā ordered the vamrīs to cut the bow string. 19-22. Hearing this order of Brahmā, the vamrī spoke to Brahmā, thus: ’O Brahmā! How can I disturb the sleep of the Devadeva, Lord of Lakṣmī, the World-guru? To rouse one from one’s deep sleep, to interrupt one in one’s speech, to sever the love between a couple husband wife, to separate a child from his mother—all these are equivalent to brahmāhatyā (murdering a Brahmāṇa). Therefore, O Deva! how can I interrupt the happiness of sleep of the Devadeva? And what benefit shall I derive by eating the bowstring, so that I may incur this vicious act? But a man can commit a sin if there be any interest of his; I am ready to eat this, if I get a personal interest.’
