The Drunken Odyssey with John King: A Podcast About the Writing Life
On this week's show John speaks with Todd James Pierce about Larry Watkin and his history with Walt Disney as a novelist, screenwriter, and producer. They explore the 1940s to the 1960s of Watkin's career and the common themes present throughout his risky live-action Disney projects such as Darby O'Gill, Robin Hood, and Treasure Island.
Three Tennessee football players were selected in the NFL Draft last week. Cause for celebration, or concern? The four qualifying teams for last season's College Football Playoff combined for 44 draft picks. That suggests that if Tennessee wants to go from competitive program to national championship program under Josh Heupel, he needs to start producing more NFL talent. And yet, consider that Tennessee finished 9-4 despite not having a single player selected within the draft's first three rounds. That speaks to Heupel's coaching ability. On today's episode, hosts Blake Toppmeyer, Adam Sparks and John Adams unpack Tennessee's production in the draft and why they think Jaylen Wright will become UT's most productive NFL player from this draft class. They also preview next year's draft class, highlighted by edge rusher James Pierce, who profiles as a potential No. 1 overall pick. And, they consider this question: Is Tennessee's draft performance cause for concern? Law360's Pro Say - News & Analysis on Law and the Legal Industry
After more than six years of quiet obsession over the attorneys and other legal pros who appear on The Bachelor and Bachelorette, Pro Say brings you an exclusive interview with one such contestant. We're joined this week by Mayer Brown associate James Pierce, who was one of roughly two dozen suitors vying for the affections of Charity Lawson on the most recent season of the Bachelorette. James dishes on what his BigLaw bosses thought of his detour into reality television, how his legal training informed his time on the show, and what his life has been like since returning to the real world. Also this week, the ABA hits back against attacks on law firm diversity programs, and 3M settles the largest mass tort litigation in U.S. history for $6 billion, while also advancing a $12.5 billion settlement in another case….all on the same day.
There had been reports of gold in the Rocky Mountains since the time of the Conquistadors. John Ralston had found a little in Arvada in 1849. But no one had gotten rich. William Green Russell and some other successful Georgia miners decided to come to the Rocky Mountains and find lots of gold. They left Georgia on February 17, 1858, and after four months on the road, they got to the banks of Cherry Creek on June 24. They came following the Santa Fe Trail to the Cherokee Trail. On July 3rd, most gave up and returned home. Thirteen remained. These people were convinced gold was here and were determined to find it. A few weeks later, James Pierce, Russell's cousin, found about $400 worth of gold at the mouth of Little Dry Creek in Englewood. On the last day of July, a whisky trader and complete stranger, John Cantrell, a former California 49er himself, rode into the Dry Creek camp and not only visited for a week but, upon his departure to Kansas City, took a bag of Jim Pierce's gold-bearing gravel and dirt with him. Arriving in Kansas City with his pouch of pay dirt, Cantrell had it assayed and the value attested. On August 26, the Kansas City Journal of Commerce headlines of August 26, 1858, stated: Gold in Kansas Territory!! The Pike's Peak Mines! First Arrival of Gold Dust at Kansas City!!!" Long before it was a mainstream concept, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. deeply understood the central tenets of mindfulness. The example we explore in this episode is how he embraced the ideal of being centered in oneself and not allowing externalities or hatred spewed by other people - to taint how we see ourselves, or provoke us to wrong action. Let us remember his example and do our own part to build a better world by being mindful in how we show up in it.MLK's 6 Principles of NonviolenceBoost Your Mindfulness PracticeWatch the VideoPod versionMindful in 5 Tools You Can UseGet your signed copy of Mindful in 5Pick up the book from AmazonDownload your complimentary sample chapters from the Mindful in 5 book.Rate us on www.trustpilot.com (enter "Mindful in 5" in the query box).Email info@spiwejefferson.com with a topic request or if you'd like to be a guest. The Drunken Odyssey with John King: A Podcast About the Writing Life
In this week's show, I talk to Disney historian Todd James Pierce about how Covid-19 and the home streaming of entertainment might affect the future of visual storytelling, plus we discuss his current historical work on Disney Legend John Hench.
We're back babyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! I've had a whole year to think about my actions and I learned very little. We're kicking the summer off right by going to bridge fest, a town wide fundraiser for the foot bridge at the center of town. In today’s Substack-fueled shout-out, would you like to use your tech, data, design, or research skills in the name of community service? Code for Charlottesville may be the place for you! Code for Charlottesville will be holding an orientation session on April 21 where you can learn more about their streetlight mapping project, criminal record expungement data analysis, or their pro-bono tech consulting for local nonprofits. Learn more on the Code for Charlottesville website. On today’s show:Charlottesville City Council gets an update on the current year’s financial shortaAlbemarle’s Places29-Hydraulic Committee gets updates on Boys and Girls Club, Charlotte Humphris park, and StonefieldEven though the Charlottesville City Council meeting from April 19, 2021 was the shortest in recent memory, the next two newsletters will include info from that event. They were finished with business by 8:30 p.m, something that almost never happens. Last week, Charlottesville City Council adopted a $192.2 million budget for the fiscal year that begins on July 1, 2021. Yesterday the five Councilors got an update on efforts to plug the revenue shortfall expected in the current fiscal year due to declines in meals and lodging taxes. “We’re now projecting revenues will come in at approximately $8.3 million lower than what our adopted budget amounts are,” said Ryan Davidson, a senior budget management analyst with the city of Charlottesville. That estimate is based on meals tax revenues that are $3.7 million less than anticipated and lodging taxes that are $2.73 million less. This is the last quarterly report of the fiscal year, which now means staff will have to identify ways to make up the shortfall. “We’ve talked about the COVID reserve of approximately $6.7 million and and on top of that there was also CARES funding from the first round of federal funding that came through that was previously authorized for FY21 operating expenses,” Davidson said. “We have some revenue decreases that should have some corresponding expenditure decreases.” The budget will be further reconciled as actual revenues come in, as well as the city’s first receipt of proceeds from the American Rescue Plan. Davidson said he would share more about that with Council and the public as more information become available. Charlottesville’s first financial snapshot as of March 31, 2021 (report)Council also got a preview of the United Way of Greater Charlottesville’s Envision campaign. Ravi Respeto is the organization’s president. “It’s really about looking to the future of what Charlottesville can be while we work together to look at reducing poverty in our community, working as nonprofit partners and peers toward a common goal,” Respeto said. The plan has two strategic goals. One called Financial Stability seeks to help 1,800 families out of poverty by 2026 by getting them to a household income of $45,000, which is considered the threshold for survival in Charlottesville. The second is a School Readiness goal to increase the number of kindergarteners who pass literacy benchmarks. “We’ve been doing school readiness in our community for many, many years but financial stability is becoming really our key focus and sort of the bedrock for all of the work that we’re doing,” Respeto said. Respeto also detailed the United Way’s increasing move toward providing direct services in collaboration with governments and other nonprofits. She said the Community Emergency Relief Fund helpline receives between 250 and 300 calls a day. “And we suspect that the need isn’t going to go away any time soon,” Respeto said. Charlottesville Mayor Nikuyah Walker noted that one resource known as the Pathway Fund is running out of money. She wanted the city to find a way to provide additional revenue out of a sense of urgency. “One thing can set a family back and it could be some one thing as simple as a car repair but it has that kind of domino effect,” Walker said. “It absolutely does,” Respeto said. “Families who are already living under constant poverty, it’s hard for them to get out of it,” Walker said.Later in the meeting, Council discussed replenishing the Pathway fund. We’ll have more from that discussion in a moment. A slide from Respeto’s presentation to Council on April 19, 2021 (download presentation)At the same time Charlottesville City Council’s work session was wrapping up, the Places29-Hydraulic Community Advisory Committee was getting underway. They learned that the Boys and Girls Club of Central Virginia is going to break ground in June on their new facility at the Albemarle County’s Lambs Lane Campus. James Pierce is the CEO.“We’re very excited about all of the county support we have received to this point,” Pierce said. “That means we have a target date for completion and opening with the school year of 2022.” The facility is expected to provide after-school education and activities for around 300 people a day who are between the ages of 13 and 16. A special use permit request will be made to turn the area into a community center that can be used by more than just the Club. The CAC also got an update on an effort to refurbish Charlotte Humphris Park, one of the largest parks in Albemarle’s growth area. Kimberly Swanson is a member of the Places29-Hydraulic CAC. “So the park itself is 23 acres without about one and a half miles of paved trails,” Swanson said. “There’s a forested portion. Towards the back is a meadowed, more open area and there’s also a wetland area.” Benches and a natural play area are two of the amenities that have been added to the park. Learn more about the park in this presentation The CAC also got an update from the manager of Stonefield, Samantha Strong. The commercial area’s main tenant is just about to reopen after over a year of being shutdown for the pandemic. “We do have a date for the movie theater,” Strong said. “We are less than a month away so we are working diligently away on getting everything ready.” Strong said Splendoras will reopen in Stonefield and is working on inspections. The space formerly used by Pier One will be divided into three spaces, one of which will become a Torchy’s Tacos franchise. “They’re out of Texas and this is their first location on the east coast area here,” Strong said. Stonefield was rezoned by the Board of Supervisors in 2003, but ground was not broken until May 2011 for many reasons including the Great Recession. The original developer had rezoned the land for a 65 acre development that was originally promoted to have more of an urban form, with multiple story buildings. A second developer brought the property and first built single-story retail establishments. A third development firm, O’Connor Capital Partners, purchased the property in late 2016 and has since returned to the original vision. Construction of new multifamily apartments has also led to more pedestrian interconnectivity to nearby streets. Supervisor Diantha McKeel had this description, though the handrails aren’t yet installed.“If you think about where the Thai restaurant is, down, there’s a staircase there you can walk down into Stonefield, which is pretty cool,” McKeel said. Albemarle County has agreed to participate in a partnership to build below-market units for people at risk for being homeless at the site of the Red Carpet Inn. Albemarle’s Office of Housing will commit 80 of its federal housing vouchers to Virginia Supportive Housing, one of three nonprofits working to redevelop the site in a project now known as Premier Circle. Virginia Supportive Housing worked with the City of Charlottesville on the 60-unit Crossings at 4th and Preston which opened in March 2012. Virginia Supportive Housing has submitted an application for low-income housing tax credits (LIHTC) for their portion of the Premier Circle project, which also includes 60 units being pursued by Piedmont Housing. Last month, the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation awarded a $4.25 million grant for the project. For all of the details on the project to date, there’s this article from Allison Wrabel in the Daily Progress.Enjoy the program? Want it to keep going?
VISIT OUR DOWNLOAD STORE Audioshows.e-junkie.com Tarzan was the brain child of American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, who after having had several failed attempts at penetrating the pulp fiction scene finally made a name for himself with this jungle fantasy adventure. In 1932, the novel was adapted into a radio program that starred James Pierce as the infamous lord of the jungle, Tarzan. Coincidentally, Burroughs' daughter Joan who happened to be Pierce's wife also played Tarzan's love interest, Jane. The show was an overnight success and captured a staggering number of listeners. This old time radio program was broken into three parts. Tarzan of the Apes was the first installment in the series and narrated his history and background. In 1934, Carton KaDell portrayed Tarzan in the second series, Tarzan and the Diamond of Asher. The third and final arc was serialized in 1936 entitled: The Fires of Toth. Due to its mass appeal, this old radio show was later revived in 1951 and enjoyed air time until 1952, with Lamont Johnson breathing life into the character of Tarzan once again. The political views deeply entrenched within the story allowed Tarzan to carve a place in the Golden age of Radio as a unique and terrifyingly original series. A world of danger and thrills await you deep in the forests of Africa, enjoy Tarzan! Old Radio Shows
When God speaks, are we ready to listen? No matter where we are in life, or our past experience, God is always ready to welcome us with open arms. Dcn. James Pierce invites us to consider our own openness to God, and examine places in our lives where we may not be so open. “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
Christmas is a time to celebrate the coming of Christ, the Prince of Peace. But do we act as though we need a Prince of Peace? Dcn. James Pierce calls for reflection on the burdens experienced even before the pandemic, and encourages the wait for the Light of Christ. "...peace to those on whom His favor rests."
God promises to David, king of Israel, a throne firm forever. Yet, it seems that with the failure of the Israelite kingly line, that God broke this promise. Dcn. James Pierce calls us to re-examine God's promise of a throne firm forever. He encourages us to see that God keeps this promise, and makes the promise anew, even now. "...your throne shall stand firm forever."
God gives amazing gifts to each and every person, and those gifts bear fruit. But what does it look like when a person lives the fullness of God's gifts? And what does it look like when someone is afraid to live those gifts fully? Dcn. James Pierce shows us what it looks like when one lives God's gifts, and encourages us: Don't be afraid to be too good to be true. "Well done, my good and faithful servant... come, share your master's joy."
God has long sent tenants to care for His vineyard, to care for his people. But those tenants don't always remember their purpose: they don't always serve faithfully, and they don't always recognize God's presence among them. Dcn. James Pierce encourages us to work faithfully in the vineyard, and in that work to always be prepared to recognize Jesus. "...the kingdom of God will be...given to a people who will produce its fruit."
Do we believe that God is still hiring? It's easy in our day-to-day lives to limit God's generosity by not recognizing all the good gifts that God wants to give to us. Dcn. James Pierce invites us to turn our hearts to God, and to accept the amazing generosity on offer. "...let him turn to the Lord in mercy..." USCCB Link to Readings for 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Thank you!IN THIS EPISODE: “The devil made me do it.” It’s an excuse that has been used so often by so many that it has lost its meaning, and its effectiveness. So only a fool or a madman would commit a horrible act and then try to blame it on the devil or a demon… unless, of course, that person truly believes that is exactly what happened to them. (A Demon Made Me Do It) *** The little Norwegian village of Bærum Verk still stands as an old foundry settlement, and is an active place, both as a place to work, and as a place to live – and as a place to keep living even after you’re dead. (The Most Haunted Village in Norway) *** When John and Eva were married they told their relatives that they planned to honeymoon on the Atlantic coast, but John had another plan, and it would not be his last deception. But it would be the first act in what ended up being a mystery that has still gone unsolved to this day. (The Lawrenceburg Shanty-Boat Mystery) *** There are more than a few stories from upright citizens around the world who claim to have seen tiny humans. I’m not talking about the diminutive human beings we used to classify as dwarves or midgets until we became more enlightened. I’m talking about short, maybe two-foot tall, perfectly proportioned people. SARAH BROADHEAD: “To-day we heard that the Rebels were crossing the river in heavy force, and advancing on to this State.” In the 1730s and 40s, Scots-Irish and German settlers began laying roots in what was then known as the Marsh Creek settlement. Eventually, Samuel Gettys opened a tavern on the Marsh Creek Road, the major east-west road in the area. In 1761, he was fined for running a tavern without a license. In 1769, the Baltimore-Shippensburg road was laid out and an intersection was created at the tavern. Twenty five years later, in 1786, his son James would lay out 210 lots, including a town square, referred to as “The Diamond”, around the tavern. This new town would be known as Gettysburg. In 1800, Gettysburg became the county seat of the newly formed Adams county, named for then-president John Adams. The 1860 census shows that Gettysburg’s population numbered around 2400 and was primarily made up of German, Scots-Irish and free blacks. Prior to the war, the people of Gettysburg engaged in a diverse economy, the primary industry in town being carriage making which attracted related tradesmen such as wheelwrights, trim and canvas shops and silversmiths. Many of Gettysburg’s carriages were purchased by people south of the Mason-Dixon line, some ten miles south of Gettysburg. As the war loomed, the industry in Gettysburg began to tighten. But by 1863, the war had all but eliminated the carriage industry,. Gettysburg’s port for goods and services was Baltimore, which was a city of divided loyalties and political unrest These two factors disrupted the town’s economy. The overwhelmingly Christian population of the town worshipped in eight congregations and seven churches. As the center of Adams County’s legal business, Gettysburg was home to several lawyers. Education was well covered in Gettysburg. A number of primary and secondary schools, private schools including Carrie Sheads’s on the Chambersburg Pike and Rebecca Eyster’s on the corner of High Street and Washington, Pennsylvania College, established in 1832, and the Lutheran Theological Seminary educated the youth from near and far. To support the large amount of farms in the surrounding townships, various merchants kept shop there. Some people, such as Mary McAllister, made money by reselling cured meats she had obtained from the farmers of the area to her fellow Gettysburgians. Others owned butcher shops, like James Pierce who lived on the southwest corner of Baltimore and Breckinridge Streets; a candy store, like Philip “Petey” Winter’s on the first block of Chambersburg Street; a photography studio like Charles and Isaac Tyson had on York Street. Dry goods, general merchandise and grocers also made Gettysburg hum with activity. James Fahenstock and two of his brothers owned the largest General store in town on the corner of Baltimore Street and Middle Street. In 1860, the census listed dozens of people whose occupation was “shoemaker” or cobbler. Yet, contrary to legend, there was no shoe factory or warehouse full of shoes in Gettysburg in 1863. Tanneries, ironworks, brickyards, blacksmiths, hotels, inns and taverns rounded out the more common businesses found in town. Local curmudgeon and former town constable, John Burns, had a few odd jobs. One of those jobs was as a cobbler at the boot and shoe shop of town council president David Kendlehart. Burns, a veteran of the War of 1812, was not known to be a friendly neighbor with a kind word to offer. Among his other jobs, John Burns pumped water for the Gettysburg waterworks. Gettysburg had the latest technological advances in communications, media, gas lighting and transportation. In 1858, the railroad had come to town and, by 1863, Joseph Broadhead was an Express Messenger, on the Hanover Junction, Hanover and Gettysburg Railroad. This railroad made the economy of Gettysburg boom when it was built and, in 1863, the line was in the process of being continued westward out of town. By July 1, the progress made on this extension would be forever immortalized as “The Railroad Cut.” There were two telegraph offices in town: one at the railroad station and the other in the back of the home of John Scott on Chambersburg Street. Gettysburg had three newspapers. The Star and Banner, edited by John T. McIlhenney [mac uhl henny] and the Adams Sentinel edited by David Buehler, both had a Republican bias. The Compiler, had a Democrat bias and was edited by Henry J Stahle [staylee]. Republicans were very pro-Union while the Democrats took a softer stance on the idea of Southern secession. Neither side was keen about the idea of equality for blacks, ironically evidenced by the fact that when, years prior to the war, free blacks attempted to join the local white anti-slavery societies and were denied entry. And, so, those who were anti-slavery and black formed the Slave’s Refuge Society. SLAVE’S REFUGE SOCIETY: “we feel it our indispensable duty to assist such of our brethren as shall come among us for the purpose of liberating themselves, and to raise all the means in our power to effect our object, which is to give liberty to our brethren groaning under the tyrannical yoke of oppression. Resolution of the Slave’s Refuge Society.” A total of ten roads led into Gettysburg, each one leading to and coming from other important cities and towns, such as Carlisle, Harrisburg, York, Hanover, Baltimore, Emmitsburg, Fairfield and Hagerstown, Cashtown and Chambersburg and Mummasburg. All of these roads funneled, eventually, into the heart of Gettysburg. The layout of the town was typical for that time period with the higher valued properties being in the blocks closest to “The Diamond”, with wide, tree-lined streets of dirt flanked by paved sidewalks. The streets and roads were laid out like the spokes of a wagon wheel with the Diamond being the hub. Homes along the main roads had no front yards and came right up to the sidewalks. Most of the lots in the first few blocks off the square in any direction were developed and, therefore, presented an unbroken front. Back yards were surrounded by highboard fences and contained a small stable or carriage house, a well and an outhouse, or “privy”, as well as a small garden for the kitchen. All of this restricted free movement to the streets or alleyways. Gettysburg, by 1863, was a large town for the area with a vibrant population that loved, hated, squabbled, showed kindness, gossipped, rallied together, made local celebrities out of the best looking or most gregarious while making pariahs out of those of lesser fortune, just like any other society at any other point in history. Unlike most of those other societies, Gettysburg will endure a crucible of worry, turned to terror, turned to misery. And that all began on June 15, 1863, when Brigadier General Albert Jenkins' Confederate Cavalry Brigade crossed the Potomac and headed for Chambersburg _____________________________________ Addressing Gettysburg: INVASION! The Drunken Odyssey with John King: A Podcast About the Writing Life
In this week's episode, I talk with creative writer and Disney historian Todd James Pierce about the new Disney's Hollywood Studios attraction that let's guests cross into the screen of a cartoon experience. TEXTS DISCUSSED
Br. James Pierce Cavanaugh, O.P. preaches during Vespers on Romans 8:8-11 for the Fifth Sunday of Lent. Brother James Pierce invites us to reflect on an underlying battle that we experience: the battle against evil. Because evil is hostile to God, it attacks us instead with one weapon: avoiding unconditional love. Let us follow Christ’s example, who embraced the cross for love of us. “Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.” https://friarly.com/
Br. James Pierce Cavanaugh, O.P. preaches on Isaiah 58:7-10 for Vespers on the 5th Sunday of Ordinary Time. Christ has come into the world to be light for the world; but so frequently, we do not encounter the light of Christ in the world. Br. James Pierce invites us to ask, 'Where is the Light?' The prophet Isaiah's words to Israel give today's followers of Jesus a sure path to the Light of Christ, in such a way that darkness is unable to overcome. "...light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday."

Br. James Pierce Cavanaugh, O.P., preaches on Isaiah 49:3, 5-6 at Vespers for the Second Week of Ordinary Time. Br. James Pierce reminds us how persistently God has called us back to Himself despite our sins and despite our unworthiness. God calls us forth into his wonderful light, promising us everything and speaking the perfect Word which is found and made known in the Suffering Servant Jesus Christ. "The LORD said to me: You are my servant, Israel, through whom I show my glory."
The answer from James: "When it creates problems, rather than dissolving them." If you like the episodes with Kapil and with Kunal you will like this one. Be warned I kept the long pauses as well. Enjoy the pregnant silences! Find James here: https://twitter.com/jimmpierce
Br. James Pierce Cavanaugh, O.P. preaches during Vespers on 2 Samuel 5: 1-3 for the The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe This week we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King, but what does it mean to have Christ as our King? Br. James Pierce shows us that even what we are imagining our King will give us, even what we desire from Him, is insufficient to what God is willing to give. We are being given more than we could hope for, so how can we be worthy of that gift? "King David made an agreement with them there before the LORD, and they anointed him king of Israel."
Br. James Pierce Cavanaugh, O.P. preaches during Vespers on 2 Timothy 1: 6-8, 13-14 for the Twenty-seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time. Br. James Pierce asks what it means for a Christian to remember his or her identity. How do we intentionally live out our faith in Jesus Christ? And how does our life in faith impact our relationship with those who have gone before us? "Beloved: I remind you, to stir into flame the gift of God..."
The Drunken Odyssey with John King: A Podcast About the Writing Life
In this week's episode, I talk with creative writer and Disney historian Todd James Pierce about the new developments in role-play storytelling that were and perhaps still are planned for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios park at Walt Disney World. According to the end of the line cast member outside Oga's Cantina, you can't see all three of Batuu's suns, but you could certainly feel them, on a day called Heatstroke-in-the-Shade.

Who is this man who, determined to serve his country, went on dangerous missions, suffered a severe injury and still held to his dream? From early in his life, James Pierce knew two things. He wanted to serve his country - and one day become a Park Ranger. With specialized training, courage and determination James Pierce has managed to do both.
In August 2005 I flew into NOLA, on the flight from Seattle we could see the massive glowing storm in the Golf of Mexico. On one side of the clouds the sunset was painting it a gorgeous orange, but it was a thick cloud that quickly turned black and opaque. Looking out from the small airplane window I watched the cloud burst into electric blueish-purple as lightning strobe'd like a warning light. A fore-shadow and forecast of what was going to happen. Also a reflection of the very people who live in New Orleans. Fierce, strong, on one hand a guarded people that take care of themselves, and on the other hand very expressive of who they are through the arts (arts not just in galleries but also sculpted on top their buildings, painted on their bodies, heard in their voices as they sing on the streets, art they carry - worn deep into the wrinkles on their faces) Ten years after visiting NOLA and flying out the Monday before Hurricane Katrina, I came back. And this is where I found Lauren the owner of Solo Espresso. This is her story. SOLO ESPRESSO [Lauren Morlock, 1301 Poland Ave] Interview with bits of second track “memories” to break up interview OUTRO: For all the photos, including tattoos, barn doors, and the water line of where Katrina rested inside the cafe/house, visit AudioCafePodcast.com/61 See you next year? TIME 2:00 Start interview with Lauren from Solo Espresso Short Intro, bathtub in the bathroom in the back. Start simply. TIME 3:40 One step at a time, slow build / slow start as a pop-up. Follow opportunities as they come. TIME 4:15 Good point, contact these machines and see if there's a machine in the area around you, they may not be online on a website like Craigslist. Also, some owners contact the manufacturer to sell the machine rather than ever posting online. TIME 6:00 Bike or skate the coffee, so New Orleans and authentic. Don't forget to tell all your friends, make sure you invite them out or they will put it off. TIME 7:15 Slow start, but it can build form there and get legit. Also gives you time to discover what and how you really want to do this. TIME 7:30 Do things as you can afford to do them. What would it feel like to have a cafe and no debts? When I bought my coffee stand I felt I needed a certain machine and went into debt for it, I regretted that. TIME 7:45 First question, before starting a cafe, have you worked in a cafe before? Working in a cafe is a great piece of homework before buying a cafe. Lauren worked in coffee for 18 years before opening her shop. She worked at Starbucks in 2000, back when Starbucks did cuppings and was investing heavily in their baristas. She took advantage of getting training from different companies. After 15 years of working in a cafe you can pick up so many things about the cafe you want to own. Then, the next step IS finally opening a shop. TIME 10:40 Why was opening your basement to all of NOLa the logical next step? TIME 14:00 NOLA local tells his story of leaving New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. That he couldn't swim, that his sister saved him. TIME 14:50 Here is an attitude here, a polished and tough/raw aesthetic here. Dark stained room but not a dark space. Minimalist, but not empty. Its special. “I think it's special because its my spot. Everything literally has a story.” TIME 16:00 Shop-dog. Shanobie? Hamming people up for the pets. TIME 17:00 Same NOLA man, James Pierce, shares about his mom, dead for over 10 years and he still misses her. She lived to 84, switching from 3 cups of coffee a day to decaf, 10 kids, a bunch of grand kids. TIME 19:00 Flyer-ed the city when they started their cafe, that's how they found the woodworkers/builders/carpenters that led the build-out for the cafe. Hint: you know you have a cool cafe when people want to help build-out your space and turn into friends. TIME 21:30 “I woke up like 3 4 in the morning and didn't have shoes…” TIME 22:10 Getting the cash to start, a little bit of borrowing cash to put in the electrical/equipment/etc. Started with $10k. “Don't you want a bigger space? This is only 450 square feet.” “With internet, we are so small and I feel that this shop is so intimate I've seen so many awesome things happen by not having internet. Conversations being made and people being introduced.” All the customers are accessible. “If someone wants to steal internet or bring their own, I'm totally fine with that.” “I have worked in a lot of cafes where someone has sit there for an entire day and game, or download from Napster, or porn” interesting balance when it is your actual house. TIME 26:30 Security for small shops, cool customers who live close, pad-locked room between cafe and house, give the robber whatever they want because a cafe can re-coop money but not a cool barista or life, give them what they want and get them out of here, sometimes you have to watch little kids that come in and are super cute, we have a dog here just hanging out for security. TIME 29:35 Jean-Baptiste Ulrick the taxi driver teaching me how to speak New Orleanian “You gotta eat them T's” TIME 30:10 For the neighborhood cafe, its almost rude not to come in to the neighborhood cafe, its a great place for the neighbors to meet each other. The power of thought, not being naive but don't manifest bad things like a robbery, we have wasp spray and smart employees. “Don't try to fool with us” TIME 34:30 “Tomorrow we're having Indian food and you invited me back, but it wasn't come back to the shop, it was an invitation to come back to the neighborhood and a welcoming hand to the community. It was very cool and powerful because that was a moment that will never happen again in any other shop, its a moment that exists just here.” It creates great word of mouth and for advertising, leveraging their followers. “We do a food pop-up every Saturday” “Its nice to have an established food pop-up” create a demand for variety of food offerings. Started offering pop-ups to cross-promote with other vendors in the area. Also, microwaves are the devil. “I used to live at my shop too” TIME 38:30 Tell us about the name Solo Espresso, it seems more like a name, because you've been using the phrase “When we started solo” which could just be a phrase, or mean more… names can change over time. “We started as Dark Times Coffee” as a reference to the voodoo and other darkness that we celebrate here in New Orleans. People in New Orleans have all gone through so much darkness… because it can be a really heavy city to live in, among all the brightness.” The inspiration came from a trip to Peru, and an epiphany to only serve coffee (no flavored syrups, food, or blended drinks). We originally started with just espresso, then there was an expanding demand for other drip coffee and pour overs, then growlers for cold brew.
