14 percent of the world's coral has been lost since 2009, according to a report from the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network. The loss of these reefs impacts the ocean environment. Coral Reefs support almost 30 percent of marine life as well as the world economy. The plight of coral reefs is the subject of the documentary Chasing Coral who's lead scientist we have joining us today Dr. James Porter. Dr. James Porter is a Professor of Ecology at the University of Georgia. He is an expert in coral, climate change, and the connections between these issues and human health and social justice. He was the scientific advisor of the award-winning film "Chasing Coral" (presently on Netflix) and its educational and outreach materials. His testimony before Congress on the connections between coral and productive human society "greatly influenced the U.S.'s decision to sign this U.N. Ocean Biodiversity Treaty."
We recently told the story of Zach Peterson, a man found guilty of 2nd degree murder even though the jury not only believed him not to be the shooter but also that he wasn't even near the crime when it occurred. He was found guilty using the 'Felony Murder Rule'. Today I sit down with OMR's voice of reason and defense attorney Michael Leonard to discuss the case and the Felony Murder Rule.On Tuesday January 18th 2011 just after 2pm police get a call about gun shots and a man lying in a pool of blood at the Sunset Trailer Park off Lenoir Street in South Columbia. The following day at 1:30pm police would say that Zach Peterson was their main suspect in the death of 31 year old James Leon Porter, killed during a suspected drug deal gone bad. Zach has never denied setting up the deal and driving James Porter to the location, however he says that was the extent of what he knows from that day as he would leave Mr. Porter at the trailer park and drive across town and would later find out things went bad and James had been shot. At trial Zach's defence would bring strong evidence to help prove he was not in fact the shooter in this crime. The jury would later decide that they did not in fact believe Zach to be the shooter however he would still be found guilty of 2nd Degree Murder, why? the Felony Murder rule. Hosted on Acast. When a cop is shot in a park, Logan recognizes him as childhood friend Billy Marino, who'd been trading phone calls with their old priest, Father Joe Krolinsky. He and Briscoe learn Krolinsky left the priesthood and started a family, but Logan confides in Cragen (now assigned to Anti-corruption) Father Joe molested altar boys and even put the moves on him. The detectives learn Krolinsky gave Billy $50,000 as hush money. With all his sex assaults beyond the statute of limitations, McCoy charges Krolinsky with conspiracy to hide his past crimes. But the former priest has a shocking defense: he said young Billy recruited victims in the neighborhood and the cash was a belated payment for crimes beyond the statute of limitations. Kincaid notices Krolinsky's wife is skipping the trial - and perhaps she has family secrets to share. We're talking about Law & Order season five episode twenty "Bad Faith." Our guest is Hank Krutulis from the "Procedural Veneration" podcast. The crimes of former priest James Porter serve as the inspiration for this episode.

Our podcast has arrived this week! We show the breadth of our range, we go heavy, we go light. To start, Rob Kutner comes by to discuss the WGA Strike with host Neal Pollack. Both Rob and Neal are "inactive" WGA members, but Rob is out on the pickets with a Guild almost entirely united in solidarity. The producers and the big corporations are really putting the screws to writers these days. Neal and Rob talk about the inadequacy of the compensation, the inequity within the Guild itself, and the looming specter of AI that hangs over the entire industry. And they close with a rousing chorus of 'Solidarity Forever.'Next up, James Porter, a contributor to our sibling publication, Rock and Roll Globe, appears to discuss his review of the terrific new Little Richard documentary, 'I Am Everything.' A passionate Little Richard fan, James is happy to see one of his musical heroes getting his due. He and Neal both really enjoyed the interviews with old bandmates and family members, Neal liked the information about fringe drag performers in the 1950s, and James enjoyed the clips from Little Richard's old blues numbers before he became a megastar in the mid-1950s. Neal could take or leave the academic talking heads, who get too much screen time, but James is correct when he states that they don't actually say anything wrong. Really fun movie, worth checking out.And while 'Guardians of the Galaxy 3' needs no extra boost, Neal and guest Scott Gold both had a good time at James Gunn's swan song to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Scott says that the movie maybe relies a little too much on slow-motion walking scenes. Neal isn't in love with the more modern music choices. And they both feel like the two-and-a-half hours leads to some repetitive scenes, if not some narrative bloat. But there can be no doubt that Guardians 3 is still fun and weird, and, especially as regards the origin story of Rocket Raccoon, genuinely scary and gruesome. A finger-wagging "no so fast" to anyone who says that the MCU is dead.My god, isn't that enough? Enjoy the podcast!
