This week I'm joined by my friend Jane Moore! We became friends at our first joba s teenagers, a boat company that brought us equal laughs and trauma. We bonded over the antics of working in the service industry and chatted shifts away on the slow days behind the bar. She joins me on the pod to talk about the last few years of her life affected by chronic pain, a major surgery at a young age, and the toll physical health can take on mental health and body image. Now, Jane is gearing up to run her first half marathon (this weekend!!) So listen here and then cheer her on!

On episode 336 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, we head to Virginia. It's December 21st, 1964 and things are quiet in the Shenandoah Valley. Horace Burns is heading towards Fishersville when he witnesses a strange craft that lands in a nearby field. This would only be the start of what would become one the biggest UFO waves in the United States. So much so, that the United States Air Force's Project Blue Book would send their most important investigator to attempt to make sense of it. And it all began with the Fishersville incident. This episode was co-researched and co-written by Marcus Lowth. In today's episode we revisit a conversation from three years ago, when I swapped seats and let my friend, the journalist and broadcaster Jane Moore ask me the questions. Listening back to this interview, my approach to life after crisis remains relatively unchanged, but I also realise that there's so much more I've learnt as a result of the 60+ episodes I've recorded since then. The judgement free platform we provide for our guests to talk about their experiences of crisis, mean that we've been able to build an incredibly valuable archive packed with useful, practical tools for anyone facing a challenge. I hope you enjoy this episode and please do have a listen to the other guests I've had the privilege to talk to.Andy's Crisis Comforts 1. Charles Dickens – The Pickwick Papers – I could not have been more delighted on the day that I finally got into the library at HMP Belmarsh, and even more delighted that there was a whole shelf of Dickens.2. Ben Howard – ‘Keep Your Head Up' – Music has been incredibly important for me and my family. This has been a bit of a family anthem. 3. Château Musar – A very tasty Lebanese wine - Liquid proof that there is some good that can come of crisis. The last 12 months have created a situation that has dramatically heighted an already extensive problem. There are many reasons why domestic abuse takes place but the fact that people have had to spend so much time in their homes, often isolated and in situations of increased tension and stress, has created conditions that we know leads to more abuse. At the same time, support services have been under incredible pressure.Join newspaper columnist and TV presenter Jane Moore, along with Louise Sparywatson from Birmingham and Solihull Women's Aid and Beth McIvor from Buttle UK, as they explore this important subject and ask... What is domestic abuse? What is it like for children to live in homes where abuse is taking place? What support is available to help children overcome such a painful and traumatic experience? And what impact has the pandemic really had on this issue?
In the U.S., over the course of 2019 there was a sharp increase in the numbers of Covid-19 infections and the ensuing 'pandemic' has been the buzzword on everyone's lips, in the U.S. and worldwide. Tonight, on Into the Absurd, we sat down with IRC stalwart performers Tomas Dura, Jane Moore, Sonja Robson and John Zak, to discuss their performances of their most iconic characters in works by existentialist masters (and their closely-aligned fantastical playwriting counterparts) Eugene Ionesco, Samuel Beckett, Jean Giraudoux, Tennessee Williams, Boris Vian and Franz Kafka.~~~~~~~Since the IRC’s founding in 2006, IRC stalwart performers Tomas Dura, Jane Moore, Sonja Robson and John Zak have mastered the art of theatrical absurdism through their performances of the most iconic characters in works by existentialist masters (and their closely-aligned fantastical playwriting counterparts) Eugene Ionesco, Samuel Beckett, Jean Giraudoux, Tennessee Williams, Boris Vian and Franz Kafka. It’s been nearly a year since the performing arts vacated the stage, leaving the ghost light burning as we all await a safe return. While we take our places and watch for that green light, we wax nostalgic on this week’s Into the Absurd as we head backstage for a conversation with the IRC’s foremost interpreters of the form, digging into all manner and form of absurd conversation: preparing to play Ionesco; how to refashion a second interpretation of Mr. Smith of The Bald Soprano; wearing a tutu while catching fish by mouth on a dock in Tennessee Williams’ The Gnadiges Fraulein; embodying the existential threat that was the Schmerz in Boris Vian’s The Empire Builders. This week’s Into the Absurd is a chance to relive and reconnect with our audience and our favorite IRC memories over the last 16 years, creating the energy to propel the next decade when we return to the stage. We’ll share some memories, stories and videos as we remember the path created prior to this long intermission. We hope to see you at the table.~~~~~~~If you're on the IRC's mailing list, look for an email each Wednesday detailing the upcoming week’s guest on Into the Absurd, with links to websites and information. Celebrating Favorite Friends Week at the IRC with this Saturday's 5 pm virtual dinner conversation with actress Jane Moore. We'll talk about Jane's rich and vast body of work in theater and television; lighting up the IRC stage in the works of Tennessee Williams, Eugene Ionesco and Jean Giraudoux, and we'll reflect on some fun and just plain silly experiences with the IRC and other stages (notably, a lesson on grace and manners on stage with Gilberte, below). In honor of the rehearsal home stretch the IRC would normally be heading down in production for our annual live Fringe show (pre-pandemic), we're instead feasting on food for thought with our favorite leading lady of the stage and screen.
Our dear Colorado friends, welcome to the podcast. Today we have a party on the show! Mitch and Jane Moore and Cam Shorey and Alex McVicar join us to chat all about ways to physically and mentally prepare to move. Both of these couples moved across the country to Colorado, which is where we met them. Then due to COVID related job reasons they moved back to their home states. We share the stories of how we all met and became such good friends. The conversation is surrounded by the common theme of having the courage to put yourself out there. You never know if your new best friend is sitting across from you at a bar or grocery story, until you have the bravery to strike up a conversation. Forming new friendships as an adult can be tricky, but hopefully this episode will help. Both couples share their experiences with their most recent moves back home. I asked them about what they would've done differently during their move, and we share some packing tips, as well. Take it away, Cam and Alex & Mitch and Jane!Follow us on social:@takeitaway_podcasthttps://www.instagram.com/takeitaway_podcast/

In this first episode of the second series, Andy puts himself on the other side of the microphone and talks to journalist and broadcaster Jane Moore about his five-year crisis. A high-profile scandal which unravelled his life and led to a spell in prison. Andy talks about confronting his mistakes and the strategies he deployed to cope and recover. As Andy says, having heard so many crisis stories from others on the podcast, he thought it was only fair that he now shares his. Andy's Crisis Cures: 1. Charles Dickens and The Pickwick Papers: “The old marketing slogan for The News of the World was ‘all human life is here’ and that’s true of Dickens. It’s definitely true of The Pickwick Papers because you’ve got politics, you’ve got the law, you’ve got prison, you’ve got journalism. Everything is there in that book and it’s a cracking read.” 2. Ben Howard – Keep Your Head Up: “Music has also been incredibly important for me and for the family. If I had to choose one [song] it would be Keep Your Head Up by Ben Howard which is a bit of a family anthem.” 3. Château Musar: “It’s what I send to every podcast guest when it’s appropriate… it’s from the Lebanon and I chose it because it is really tasty and also because it is liquid proof that there is good to come from crisis.” Links: Website: www.crisiswhatcrisis.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/crisiswhatcrisispodcast Stream/Buy ‘Allies’ by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bm Some Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.uk

The majority of students in the United States are learning from home through online education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This change is an adjustment for kids and parents from both a technological and emotional standpoint. How can educators achieve success during such a transition? Dr. Jane Moore, Regional PD Lead and Coordinator for the Department of Social and Emotional Learning for Istation, and Crystal Smith, a third-grade teacher at Chapel Hill Preparatory Academy in the Dallas Independent School District, offered their insights on this extraordinary moment. With the need to quickly shut educational institutions down and move students to an online environment, Dr. Moore said most schools and students were unprepared to shift to online learning, and adjustments are ongoing. In many cases, students left school without essential online tools they’d need to begin their learn-at-home journeys. And the learn-at-home platforms are not standardized throughout systems, either. Smith’s own two children each learn on a different online education platform. “The first couple of weeks were the hardest. Kids’ emotions were all over the place,” Dr. Moore said. It took a bit to get a routine down where both kids and parents felt comfortable with their day. Smith pointed out that this is an adjustment for the parents as wells as the kids, and, depending on one’s technical expertise, it may be an equal challenge for the parent to navigate the online teaching platform technology as it is for the child. During this period of adjustment and stress, educators need to focus on five key competencies of social-emotional learning. “Those competencies are self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness,” Dr. Moore said.
Inspired by Jim's message in today's online service, Jane Moore recorded this piano arrangement of "As the Deer" -- thank you, Jane!
These recording were from Chancel Choir rehearsals, so there are the occasional instructions from the director, missed notes, and background noises. There's an old saying about not showing how the sausage is made, but I'll ignore that! Here are the pieces in this set:Be Still My SoulA choral arrangement of the hymn, "Be still my soul, the Lord is on your side..." Prayer to the Shepherd"Gentle Shepherd, lead me, down the hillside steep; / Gentle Shepherd, lead me, I am but a sheep..." and in the middle, adding the song "My shepherd will supply my needs". There's a wonderful flute player on this rehearsal recording, and I wish I could remember who it was.Every ValleyA choral setting of Isaiah 40:3-4:"Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low:and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it."Thank you, Chancel Choir, and especially accompanist Jane Moore!

Technology tools, like the online learning portal from Dallas-based iStation, are not only helping students in elementary school, but they are aiding early literacy efforts for kids just coming into Kindergarten. In this episode of the EdTech Podcast, host Tyler Kern sat down with Dr. Jane Moore , Strategic Professional Development Specialist, and Dr. Georgia Thompson, Trainer and Implementation Specialist at IStation, to discuss why early literacy is important for its very youngest students. While sophisticated, 1:1-empowering, and device-driven EdTech might be considered a relatively new development in instruction, IStation’s adaptive online reading curriculum for elementary school students has roots in a Clinton-era initiative called the National Reading Panel. The panel helped establish the five essential pillars for literacy learning, upon which IStation’s curriculum is based. The pillars include phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Teaching these scientifically-based reading pillars is helping close the gap for incoming Kindergarten students, whose literacy often varies widely from English as a second language to fluent readers. “Studies have shown how simultaneous advantage of using print, sound, and animation is really speeding along those acquisition skills we want our children to have,” Dr. Moore said. In addition, the International Literacy Association found that meaningful use of digital resources can substantially diminish the literacy difference between the low-economic student and their more affluent peers. But if you think IStation’s online learning portal is removing teachers from the equation, Georgia assures that’s not the case. “We never want to replace the teacher,” Dr. Thompson said. “It does not supplant, it just supplements.”
