Sal hails from Baton Rouge Louisiana where he started riding BMX until it went in a direction that no longer interested him, and with a little luck, found himself with a skateboard to ride, and has never looked back. Soon, he found himself touring with skateboarding greats like Danny Way and Ron Allen, filming all around the country, and living a dream. His early sponsors include H-Street, Plan B, Tracker Trucks, and Spitfire. Those dreams come to and end for most and for him, he just took what he had an moved forward on new projects of his own. He's been the man behind Aesthetics Clothing and Skateboards, Elwood, 23 Skateboards and more. He's lived in New York and helped run the Zoo York brand at it's peak, and much more. He's got some new projects coming up with his BMX roots, but personally will always be searching out a thrill on his skateboard. At 49 years old, I watched him still casually busting out backside airs in a pool just a few weeks ago. Through his various brands and relationships, he's sponsored many people who've gone on to make quite a splash in skateboarding, like Fucking Awesome's Jason Dill amongst others. Sal is deep in the skateboard culture and has a great respect for it.On the day we recorded (twice--oops), Sal found himself with myself and legendary skate photographer and music man "O" Otis Barthoulameu as O dyed some wheels for him and we were chatting while the Rit Dye boiled. Sorry for the background noise, this is just the reality of doing all this on the fly.If you are a fan of Sal, you will enjoy hearing his perspective. As always, I learn new things everyday from these conversations, and am happy to share them with my 3 listeners worldwide. Thank all 3 of you. Privacy Policy and California Privacy Notice.

If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. I met Anthony as a youngster in the mid 1980's around the So Cal Skate scene, at CASL competitions, at the Tracker factory etc... He is 46 years old now, so he must have been 14 or so at the time. We've always gotten along and he's always made me smile. Turns out we have even more in common that I knew. We talked about his early sponsorship with House of Kasai with him and Jason Dill as ams which I did not remember. We talked about his losing his love for skateboarding, and then finding it again. He moved to Louisiana just before hurricane Katrina, and later moved to Houston, Texas where he worked for South Shore Skateboard distribution. Big shout outs and respect to Damian Hebert at South Shore and the whole crew. He even brought up the fact that I made his first skateboards for Delic at ABC board supply, something I didn't even remember, but was happy he liked them and was stoked.I loved learning that Delic skateboards was inspired by FunkaDELIC, and that Anthony produced Hip Hop and R&B music while living in New Orleans. I officially decided from now on Anthony will be known as FUNKA to me.We talk a little bit about being a Black Skater, and ways its affected him, and some of the experiences he's had along the way, good and bad. I admit some of my own white ignorance as well, I've got lots of that. We had breakfast for dinner at Norms restaurant and did our podcast in the car in the parking lot.We have enjoyed so many people and things in common. We are G&S, Tracker, and A-1 Meats Alumni.. Many names come up like Ned Hadden, Mark Hostetter, Matt Hensley, Ben Chibber, Mike Carroll, Mike Hill, Chris Carter, Willy Santos, Jinx, Daewon Song, Chris Cole, Ray Underhill (RIP), Eddie Reategui, Ron Chatman, Cameron Tabbytite and so many more. We tossed out a little extra love for his mentors and friends Bryan Ridgeway, and Freddie De Sota.Had a great time chatting with Anthony, and hope you enjoy it.. Thanks again FUNKA!!!!

William Strobeck, known simply as Bill by those closest to him, is this generation’s Spike Jonze. In 2014, he singlehandedly changed the direction of modern skate videos with the release of “cherry”. It was the first full-length from both Strobeck and Supreme, and had a similar impact to Jonze and Mark Gonzales’s Video Days when that debuted in 1991.“cherry” introduced the world to a group of skaters that would go on to become icons. At the time, most videos felt like blockbuster movies that were far removed from the D.I.Y. spirit that birthed them. With street life vignettes that feel like you are watching the sessions live, Strobeck brought back an aesthetic that was lost sometime during the transition from standard to high definition. It had clearly been missed.Bill’s trajectory was foreshadowed over a decade earlier. Before Tyshawn Jones, Na-Kel Smith, and “BLESSED”, there was Anthony Pappalardo, Brian Wenning, and Photosynthesis. He cut his teeth during the Josh Kalis and Stevie Williams era at Love Park. And his footage helped craft the Sovereign Sect’s look during its golden age. With that sort of pedigree, no one should be surprised by what Strobeck would go on to accomplish after. But Bill didn’t get to where he is today without a little bit of luck. His Alien Workshop years were the start of an ongoing collaboration with Jason Dill. This friendship has landed him in “the right place at the right time” at multiple points during his career. The connection with Dill and a breakup with a longtime girlfriend were responsible for transplanting Strobeck to New York in 2002 after a seven-year stint in Philly. And N.Y.C. would prove to be a key element in the progression of his craft. There were still shades of the old New York during those initial post-911 years. Bill, Dill, Chloë Sevigny, Ben Cho, Leo Fitzpatrick, Dash Snow, the Razo brothers, etcetera’s gallivanting between Max Fish, Sway, and The Hole is well-documented in the archives of Patrick O’Dell’s Epicly Later’d blog. They seemed to be the heirs apparent of the Downtown scene created by Warhol, Basquiat, Futura, Jim Jarmusch, Debbie Harry, and the rest of the legendary denizens of ‘80s L.E.S. Mingling with artists, designers, actors, and fashionistas allowed Strobeck to further develop his eye for what’s cool. This influence is highly visible in his output over the past six years. Instead of just showcasing tricks, Strobeck creates a mood through providing a glimpse into his subjects’ lifestyles. It’s more in line with what Larry Clark and Mathieu Kassovitz did with KIDS and La Haine, respectively, than a traditional skate video. And it works so seamlessly with Supreme’s branding that it's hard to imagine anyone else making its films. Currently, you’d be hard-pressed to watch one of the dozens of skate edits that are released weekly and find one that doesn’t borrow a little (or a lot) from Strobeck’s work. If those that shape the culture is the underlying theme of Mission Statement, there isn’t a more fitting guest for our 2020 season premiere.

Mama We Made It!
Episode 22: Nino Scalia

Mama We Made It!

Let's be real, skateboarding wasn't always as glamorous as the X-Games, Big Air, and million dollar sponsorships. For most, it was an escape, something that bonded people together, and allowed you to define yourself. Nino Scalia was someone who had little stability growing up. Moving from city to city, there wasn't an opportunity to establish roots, or even have close friends - and if it did happen, it was taken away just as fast. When introduced to skateboarding, Nino instantly found something he could grab on to. As his family finally settled in South Philly, it was just in time for Nino to be a part of what became one of the most influential skateboarding cities in the world. With other greats, like Rob Dyrdek, Josh Kalis, Stevie Williams, and Jason Dill, there was a new age of pioneers to push skateboarding forward. Nino's story takes us through that special era and his days of skating (and getting arrested) at LOVE Park, becoming the Team Manager for the legendary Alien Workshop, and later working with Pharrell in developing the Ice Cream skate team. If you want to get a taste of what this was like, Nino captures it perfectly in the indie-film, Street Dreams. Through all that he's has done, Nino will tell you that he was never ready for any of it. There's no perfect moment, or right time. Just go for it, and if you fall, get back on your board and try again. #MamaWeMadeIt See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
