Regarded as the most important and influential musician on the Irish jazz scene, saxophonist/flutist and composer Michael Buckley has been playing professionally since the age of six when critics hailed him as a child prodigy. Born in Dublin city in 1971 Michael first came to prominence on an International level when, aged 10, he played flute with the legendary saxophonist George Coleman in the National Concert Hall. Though largely self-taught, his obvious talent has been developed by his father Dick Buckley, and such legends as Milt Hinton. Buckley has found his unique voice playing both saxophone and flute. Buckley has been collaborating with the World Jazz Orchestra, where Michael represented Ireland, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival Orchestra (led by Tim Hagans), and small group tours and concerts with Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Joey Baron, Jason Rebello, Nils Wolgram, Tom Rainey, and Chander Sardjoe, to name but a few. Now in his early 40s, Buckley is rapidly becoming the most important producer of his generation. With countless albums ranging from jazz to traditional to hip-hop, Michael is making a name for himself internationally as a producer and engineer. Buckley has also performed and toured in recent years with The Mingus Big Band, Jason Moran, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Edward Simon, Pete King, Badal Roy, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Grant Stewart, Ingrid Jensen, Guy Barker, Greg Burk, Damon Brown, Kevin Dean, Florian Ross, soloist with the BBC big band, Albert Sanz, and Gerard Presencer among others. As well as frequent radio spots, Michael has made numerous television appearances, regularly works on film and television scores, and recently collaborated on recordings with Donovan, the Cranberries, The Coors, Jerry Lee Louis, and Johnny Mattis.

This celebrated British jazz pianist, songwriter and record producer was labelled a veteran by critics at age 19 and over the following decade won most of the major jazz music awards. Born in Surrey and raised in Wandsworth London, he was classically trained and attended the Guildhall School of Music . Emerging in the late 80s as a jazz pianist and influenced by Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner, he recorded three solo albums in his early 20s and his debut album A Clearer View in 1990 was produced by his dream choice of Wayne Shorter. This led to him appearing on the cover of The Wire magazine. He additionally worked with Jean Toussaint, Tommy Smith, and Branford Marsalis In the late 90's Sting invited him to join his band following the death of Kenny Kirkland which saw him tour with Sting for the next six years and recording three albums. He then became a member of Jeff Beck's band, touring for six years and recording a further three albums. During these years he also worked with Chaka Khan, Des'ree, Mica Paris, Carleen Anderson, Manu Katché, Phil Collins, and Peter Gabriel In 2013 after twelve years of touring as a session musician he reestablished himself as a solo artist and soon after, released the album Anything But Look on Lyte Records featuring Will Downing, Omar, Joy Rose, Jacob Collier, Tim Garland and Pino Palladino. He teaches music at Guildhall School of Music and Bath Spa University and additionally composes music for the London-based production music library, Audio Network.

Esta semana, en una nueva sesión de Rebelión Sónica, destacamos el trabajo del importante vientista británico Tim Garland, con material de dos discos: su colaboración 2023 con el tecaldista ingles Jason Rebello, “Life To Life” (Whirlwind Records) y su participación en el disco “Random Acts Of Hapiness” (2004) de Bill Bruford's Earthworks. De acuerdo al texto de difusión, “Life to Life” documenta la culminación de tres décadas de respetuosa colaboración entre dos de los músicos de jazz más venerados del Reino Unido: el tecladista Jason Rebello y el multi-vientista Tim Garland. Luke spoke to the musician Robert Mitchell about his life as a creative artist and the importance of music and other arts to society and, more broadly, for humankind. Robert Mitchell is one of the most significant voices in British jazz. Multi-faceted creator, pianist, keyboardist, composer, improviser, writer, poet and so much more. He is a relentless seeker and thinker, encompassing many art forms, musical genres and constantly pushing the envelope. In the last year he has released the extremely contrasting albums “Hold The Light/The New Resistance' DOF004 (from his unit TRUE THINK) and 'Towards The Flame' 577 Records (from the improv trio The Flame). He has released 13 albums. Robert is a throwback to the powerful tradition of artistic mastery in pursuit of transcendence. He is proud to have been a Steinway artist since 2009. He was MD on the successful BBC4 television programme ‘Jazz 625 Live: For One Night Only' which won the British Broadcasting Award. He has played with Billy Harper, Greg Osby, Courtney Pine CBE, Alicia Olatuja, Orphy Robinson, Steve Coleman, Phil Ranelin, Omar Puente, Ernesto Simpson, Daymé Arocena, Jason Rebello, Shirley Smart, Basement Jaxx, Dub Colossus, Daniel Casimir, Joshua Redman, Jacqui Dankworth MBE, and many others. Robert Mitchell's works have been performed by the Grammy-winning Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and the London Sinfonietta, amongst others. He is a sought-for composer and known as an innovator with a distinct, unique voice. Robert has performed solo piano since the 90s. Recent concerts include Romania, Derby, Coventry, London with more on the way this year in Newcastle, Brighton and Bristol. His 2020 album The Rainbow Mountain/Can We Care' - was a near 40 min improvisation (completed with one of his original songs - live at the Jazz Cafe, London). Solo performances now include original music, Classical, Jazz, improvisations, left hand only, inside piano and poetry. Drummer, percussionist, writer, producer and MD who has worked with the cream of British music talent including Jimmy Page, Billy Ocean, Incognito, Jason Rebello, Jocelyn Brown, Beverley Knight, Nigel Kennedy, Soul II Soul, Joss Stone, Roachford and Mica Paris. Born and raised in London from a rich mixed cultural background of Afro Caribbean, Arabic, Portuguese and Chinese, he was introduced to music at a young age via his fathers' extensive record collection comprising of reggae, calypso, soca, Latin, jazz, funk r&b and pop. With his first drum kit at just 6 years of age he formed his first band aged 13 and later shunning a scholarship to further study music, he opted for the life of a professional musician landing his first European tour with British jazz funk outfit The Breakfast Band. His passion was nurtured further by his uncle, renowned session guitarist Winston Delandro, opening doors to a sea of great musicians which allowed him to expand and enrich his musicality, travel the world, learn of life and its diverse cultures that reflect in his own music and productions.

Sophie Alloway Today I am talking the awesomely talented Sophie Alloway, what a lovely chat with Sophie about working hard and making contacts by focus and getting out there and playing. Sophie Alloway is a freelance drummer, based in London, working in a variety of musical settings for a wide range of artists. She played drums for rapper Roots Manuva for two years; touring the UK, Australia and New Zealand with him. As well as appearing on Later With Jools Holland, Mercury Music Prize and BBC Introducing she has played top festivals including Glastonbury, Hop Farm, and Bestival; whilst also touring with the Michael Jackson musical 'Thriller'. She was the drummer in a recent Sky TV advert and YouTube videos featuring her have reached well over a million views. She could also be seen performing with Clean Bandit at last year's MTV European Music Awards. What's going on in the brain when someone creates new music? Musical improvisation is a skill that draws on many parts of the brain and is also related to creativity in other domains. In this episode of A Grey Matter, we speak to legendary jazz pianist Jason Rebello and UQ neuroscientist Professor Geoff Goodhill to explore the science behind musical creativity.  Jason Rebello is a leading jazz pianist from the UK, who spent 10 years touring the world first with Sting and then Jeff Beck. He recorded three albums with Sting and has also recorded many of his own, including the 2016 solo project, Held.

One of the finest up and coming Scottish Jazz musicians and composers takes to the road with Tune Up for his first ever nationwide tour - playing his own compositions with David Dunsmuir on guitar, Ross Hamilton on bass and a host of special guest appearances. Jazz musician Alyn Cosker has emerged as a regular on the Scottish jazz scene, known to most as the drummer with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and for his performances alongside numerous international jazz greats. Most recently, he stepped in to replace Paolo Vinaccia to great acclaim on a couple of dates on the Tune Up tour that featured Tommy Smith and Arild Anderson. So impressed was Tommy Smith, that he has agreed to guest on Alyn's own Tune Up tour this May. Cosker is also coming to light as a talented composer and this, his first nationwide tour, will co-incide with his debut album release, showcasing the Alyn Cosker Trio comprising electric guitarist David Dunsmuir and Ross Hamilton on bass. Special guest will also include Tommy Smith (tnr sax), Jason Rebello (pno), Paul Towndrow (alto/sop sax), Ryan Quigley (trumpet) & Maureen McMullan (vox). "This has been my first real outlet for composition, and it will be mainly my own stuff. There are a lot of styles going on within the trio, and I wanted to challenge myself." Alyn Cosker
