The Dawgman.com interns - Jack McCauley and Intern Emeritus Luke Mounger - roll through the rest of their position group previews by combining two more rooms into one podcast. After breaking down Washington's defensive line group, the interns got after it with the EDGE and Inside Linebacker rooms. To start, they analyze the UW EDGE players, starting with their stars - Bralen Trice and Zion Tupuola-Fetui - as well as Sekai Asoau-Afoa, Maurice Heims, Zach Durfee, Lance Holtzclaw, Anthony James, and Jacob Lane, as well as veteran Voi Tunuufi, who made the move from the defensive line room. Who will the Huskies lean on after Brice and ZTF? And how will their skill sets complement each other? And how will the walk-ons, starting with Milton Hopkins, make their presence known? After a quick break the guys then move inside to talk about the players responsible for handling the next level of the defense - the inside linebackers. This group has seen a bit of a personnel shift, as Cam Bright, Kristopher Moll, Demario King, Daniel Heimuli, and a handful of walk-ons are all gone; Ralen Goforth was brought in from USC, as well as true freshmen Deven Bryant, Jordan Whitney, and a couple of new walk-ons to help fill in the gaps. So is it a matter of addition by subtraction? Will having Edefuan Ulofoshio from the beginning of the year show itself in a way it couldn't last season? And will Alphonzo Tuputala continue to develop on the field considering all the physical changes he's made in the weight room? And will a player like Goforth reach his potential in a new environment after a mixed career with the Trojans? And will a stalwart like Carson Bruener be the perfect foil for Goforth? Will they be the pair behind Ulofoshio and Tuputala the Huskies can count on for quality depth that they couldn't in 2022? Jack and Luke finish out this preview pod by taking a look at the other scholarship players that make up the linebackers room, as well as the quality walk-ons like Drew Fowler, Austin Harnetiaux, and others. Current EventsSeahawks: The NFL draft is looming and mock drafts are carrying more and more weight. Huskies corner! Sav'ell Smalls announced he's entering the transfer portal. He was a standout two-way player at Garfield HS and a highly sought after 5-star recruit. His freshman year was truncated by COVID 19 and then ZTF and Jeremiah Martin emerged. He didn't see a lot of playing time. Sav'ell is a beast of an athlete and chose UW over his pick of blue chip programs. Montlake owes him a lot of gratitude and we hope he fluorishes in his next destination. He ends his Dawgs career with 32 tackles, 1 TFL, 0 sacks and 1 fumble recovery. What's Kraken!?  Main Event | -The Seattle Mariners can't hit and sometimes they can't pitch.- No extra innings games in the past week, thank goodness. - M's came home and swept the sorry ass Rockies, outscorign them 15-5 in a 3 game set. - JK continues to be hot, he's 8th in the AL in WAR ahead of Trout and Rafael Devers. - In his last 7 games, Kelenic is batting 391/462/1000 with 4 HR and 6 RBI. He's a machine. - On the flipside, Julio is slumping. In that same time frame he's hitting 172/250/379 with a 2b a 3b and a HR. Funny how that's a slump. - His BABIP is abysmal over this time probably due to a slight uptick in flyballs. He's hitting the ball hard, they're just dying before the warning track. - NOW FOR THE PITCHING: First things first. Luis Castillo should be the AL CY favorite right now. He spun another gem last sunday going 18 up, 18 down through 6. He wound up going 7, 2H 9K no walks. We won 1-0. - Kirby and Tommy Milone (who was filling in for new father Marco Gonzales, both pitched well agianst the rockies too. Chris flexen's turn came up against the Brewers last night and aside from an early inning meltdown, he pitched well enough for us to win. Unfortunately it was Penn Murfee's turn to let the team down when he relieved Flex in the 7th - The Brewers are one of the hottest teams in baseball and have the best run differential for any team that didn't start the season on a 13 game win streak. It's okay to falter a little against a former CY winner, but we can't get swept. - Adam let's keep track of the performance of this offseason's "big acquisitions" i.e. Wong, La Stella, Hernandez and Pollock. I've done some excel wizardry and created a table I can update and it'll spit out their combine slash line. Robby's Hot Take (5 second intro music... 30 seconds w/ 2 mins of discussion and banter) | They have 45 road points but only 33 home points. 21 road wins is 2nd only to the New Jersey Devils, who have 23. It might be in the team's best on-ice interest to wind up a 6 seed than 3 or 4 in the west, but is it in the franchise's? | Lightning Round  2 Listener Questions!

A green comet will appear again in Earth's sky for the first time in 50,000 years. The American space agency NASA says the comet's last visit came during Neanderthal times. It will come within 42 million kilometers of Earth on Wednesday before continuing on its path, unlikely to return for millions of years. Discovered less than a year ago, this green comet can be observed in the northern night sky with devices such as binoculars and telescopes. It is also possible to see with one's own eyes in the darkest corners of the Northern Hemisphere. The comet will be best seen in the early morning hours. It is expected to brighten as it comes closer and rises higher over the horizon through the end of January. By February 10, the comet will be near Mars. Viewers in the Southern Hemisphere will have to wait until next month to see it. Paul Chodas is director of the Center for Near Earth Object Studies at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. Chodas said that while several comets have appeared in the sky over the past year, “this one seems probably a little bit bigger and therefore a little bit brighter and it's coming a little bit closer to the Earth's orbit." The comet was discovered last March by researchers using the Zwicky Transient Facility, a special camera at Caltech's Palomar Observatory. That explains its official, difficult name: comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF). On Wednesday, the comet will pass between the orbits of Earth and Mars at a relative speed of 207,000 kilometers. Its nucleus, or center, is thought to be about 1.6 kilometers across, with its tails extending millions of kilometers. The comet is not expected to be nearly as bright as Neowise in 2020, or Hale-Bopp in the mid to late 1990s. Karen Meech of the University of Hawaii said in an email to the Associated Press that the comet “will be bright by virtue of its close Earth passage ... which allows scientists to do more experiments and the public to be able to see a beautiful comet.” Scientists are confident in their calculations, putting the comet's last pass through the solar system at 50,000 years ago. However, they do not know how close it came to Earth or whether it was even visible to the Neanderthals, said Chodas. When the comet returns, though, is more difficult to estimate. Every time the comet passes the sun and planets, their gravitational pulls change the comet's path by small amounts. However, these small effects lead to major path changes over time. There is another source of measurement difficulty. Large amounts of dust and gas come off the comet as it heats up near the sun. “We don't really know exactly how much they are pushing this comet around,” Chodas explained.然而,彗星返回的时间更难估计。每次彗星经过太阳和行星时,它们的引力都会稍微改变彗星的路径。然而,随着时间的推移,这些小的影响会导致主要的路径变化。还有另一个测量困难的来源。当彗星在太阳附近升温时,大量的尘埃和气体从彗星上脱落。 “我们真的不知道他们到底在多大程度上推动了这颗彗星,”乔达斯解释道。The comet — an ancient object produced from the emerging solar system 4.5 billion years ago — came from what is known as the Oort Cloud well beyond Pluto. This area is believed to extend more than one-quarter of the way to the next star. While comet ZTF began in our solar system, we cannot be sure it will stay there, Chodas said. If it gets sent out of the solar system, it will never return, he added. However, you should not worry if you miss it. “In the comet business, you just wait for the next one because there are dozens of these,” Chodas said. “And the next one might be bigger, might be brighter, might be closer.”

A search for relativistic ejecta in a sample of ZTF broad-lined Type Ic supernovae

A search for relativistic ejecta in a sample of ZTF broad-lined Type Ic supernovae by Alessandra Corsi et al. on Tuesday 18 October The dividing line between gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and ordinary stripped-envelope core-collapse supernovae (SNe) is yet to be fully understood. Observationally mapping the variety of ejecta outcomes (ultra-relativistic, mildly-relativistic or non-relativistic) in SNe of Type Ic with broad lines (Ic-BL) can provide a key test to stellar explosion models. However, this requires large samples of the rare Ic-BL events with follow-up observations in the radio, where fast ejecta can be probed largely free of geometry and viewing angle effects. Here, we present the results of a radio (and X-ray) follow-up campaign of 16 SNe Ic-BL detected by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). Our radio campaign resulted in 4 counterpart detections and 12 deep upper limits. None of the events in our sample is as relativistic as SN 1998bw and we constrain the fraction of SN 1998bw-like explosions to $< 19%$ (3$sigma$ Gaussian equivalent), a factor of $approx 2$ smaller than previously established. We exclude relativistic ejecta with radio luminosity densities in between $approx 5times10^{27}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ and $approx 10^{29}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ at $tgtrsim 20$ d since explosion for $approx 60%$ of the events in our sample. This shows that SNe Ic-BL similar to the GRB-associated SN 1998bw, SN 2003lw, SN 2010dh, or to the relativistic SN 2009bb and iPTF17cw, are rare. Our results also exclude an association of the SNe Ic-BL in our sample with largely off-axis GRBs with energies $Egtrsim 10^{50}$ erg. The parameter space of SN2006aj-like events (faint and fast-peaking radio emission) is, on the other hand, left largely unconstrained and systematically exploring it represents a promising line of future research. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.09536v1

Probable low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations in blazars from the ZTF survey by Anuvab Banerjee et al. on Sunday 16 October We investigate the possible presence of quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) signals in 2103 blazars from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) time-domain survey. We detect a low frequency QPO signal in five blazars observed over these 3.8 year long optical r-band ZTF light curves. These periods range from 144 days to 196 days detected at $gtrsim4sigma$ significance levels in both the Lomb-Scargle periodogram and Weighted Wavelet Z-transform analyses. A similar peak is detected in the g-band light-curve at a slightly lower significance of 3$sigma$. Such nearly periodic signals on these timescales in optical wavebands most likely originate from a precessing jet with high Lorentz factor, closely aligned to the observer's line of sight, or the movement of plasma blobs along a helical structure in the jet. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.07266v1

Bridging the gap -- the disappearance of the intermediate period gap for fully convective stars, uncovered by new ZTF rotation periods

Bridging the gap -- the disappearance of the intermediate period gap for fully convective stars, uncovered by new ZTF rotation periods by Yuxi Lu et al. on Thursday 13 October The intermediate period gap, discovered by Kepler, is an observed dearth of stellar rotation periods in the temperature-period diagram at $sim$ 20 days for G dwarfs and up to $sim$ 30 days for early-M dwarfs. However, because Kepler mainly targeted solar-like stars, there is a lack of measured periods for M dwarfs, especially those at the fully convective limit. Therefore it is unclear if the intermediate period gap exists for mid- to late-M dwarfs. Here, we present a period catalog containing 40,553 rotation periods (9,535 periods $>$ 10 days), measured using the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). To measure these periods, we developed a simple pipeline that improves directly on the ZTF archival light curves and reduces the photometric scatter by 26%, on average. This new catalog spans a range of stellar temperatures that connect samples from Kepler with MEarth, a ground-based time domain survey of bright M-dwarfs, and reveals that the intermediate period gap closes at the theoretically predicted location of the fully convective boundary ($G_{rm BP} - G_{rm RP} sim 2.45$ mag). This result supports the hypothesis that the gap is caused by core-envelope interactions. Using gyro-kinematic ages, we also find a potential rapid spin-down of stars across this period gap. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.06604v1

The Value-Added Catalog of ASAS-SN Eclipsing Binaries II: Properties of Extra-Physics Systems by D. M. Rowan et al. on Thursday 13 October Detached eclipsing binaries are the primary tool used to measure precise masses and radii of stars. In our previous paper estimating the parameters of more than 30,000 detached eclipsing binaries, we identified 766 eclipsing binaries with additional features in their All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) light curves. Here, we characterize these "extra-physics" systems, identifying eclipsing binaries with spotted stars, pulsating components, and candidate triple/quadruple systems. We use the Gaia, ATLAS, ZTF, and ASAS-SN variable star catalogs to consider possible blends. We use MIST isochrones and evolutionary tracks to identify systems with main sequence, subgiant, and giant primaries and highlight systems in sparsely populated regions of the color-magnitude diagram. We find that the orbital period distribution of spotted binaries is divided by evolutionary state and find 68 with X-ray detections. For the candidate triple/quadruples and pulsating systems, we calculate the extra orbital/pulsational period and identify systems with resonances. Finally, we highlight a number of exotic systems, including eclipsing CVs, subdwarfs, and binaries with disks. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.06486v1

Magnetic braking saturates: evidence from the orbital period distribution of low-mass detached eclipsing binaries from ZTF by Kareem El-Badry et al. on Wednesday 12 October We constrain the orbital period ($P_{rm orb}$) distribution of low-mass detached main-sequence eclipsing binaries (EBs) with light curves from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), which provides a well-understood selection function and sensitivity to faint stars. At short periods ($P_{rm orb}lesssim 2$ days), binaries are predicted to evolve significantly due to magnetic braking (MB), which shrinks orbits and ultimately brings detached binaries into contact. The period distribution is thus a sensitive probe of MB. We find that the intrinsic period distribution of low-mass ($0.1lesssim M_1/M_{odot} < 0.9$) binaries is basically flat (${rm d}N/{rm d}P_{rm orb} propto P_{rm orb}^0$), from $P_{rm orb}=10$ days down to the contact limit. This is strongly inconsistent with predictions of classical MB models based on the Skumanich relation, which are widely used in binary evolution calculations and predict ${rm d}N/{rm d}P_{rm orb} propto P_{rm orb}^{7/3}$ at short periods. The observed distributions are best reproduced by models in which the magnetic field saturates at short periods, with a MB torque that scales roughly as $dot{J}propto P_{rm orb}^{-1}$, as opposed to $dot{J} propto P_{rm orb}^{-3}$ in the standard Skumanich law. We also find no significant difference between the period distributions of binaries containing fully and partially convective stars. Our results confirm that a saturated MB law, which was previously found to describe the spin-down of rapidly rotating isolated M dwarfs, also operates in tidally locked binaries. We advocate using saturated MB models in binary evolution calculations. Our work supports previous suggestions that MB in cataclysmic variables (CVs) is much weaker than assumed in the standard evolutionary model, unless mass transfer leads to significant additional angular momentum loss in CVs. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2208.05488v2

HyperGal: hyperspectral scene modeling for supernova typing with the Integral Field Spectrograph SEDmachine by J. Lezmy et al. on Thursday 22 September Recent developments in time domain astronomy, like the Zwicky Transient Facility, have made possible a daily scan of the entire visible sky, leading to the discovery of hundreds of new transients every night. Among them, 10 to 15 are supernovae (SNe), which have to be classified prior to cosmological use. The Spectral Energy Distribution machine (SEDm), a low resolution Integral Field Spectrograph, has been designed, built, and operated to spectroscopically classify targets detected by the ZTF main camera. The current Pysedm pipeline is limited by contamination when the transient is too close to its host galaxy core; this can lead to an incorrect typing and ultimately bias the cosmological analyses, and affect the SN sample homogeneity in terms of local environment properties. We present a new scene modeler to extract the transient spectrum from its structured background, aiming at improving the typing efficiency of the SEDm. HyperGal is a fully chromatic scene modeler, which uses pre-transient photometric images to generate a hyperspectral model of the host galaxy; it is based on the CIGALE SED fitter used as a physically-motivated spectral interpolator. The galaxy model, complemented by a point source and a diffuse background component, is projected onto the SEDm spectro-spatial observation space and adjusted to observations. The full procedure is validated on 5000 simulated cubes. We introduce the contrast as the transient-to-total flux ratio at SN location. From estimated contrast distribution of real SEDm observations, we show that HyperGal correctly classifies ~95% of SNe Ia. Compared to the standard extraction method, HyperGal correctly classifies 10% more SNe Ia. The false positive rate is less than 2%, half as much as the standard extraction method. Assuming a similar contrast distribution for core-collapse SNe, HyperGal classifies 14% (11%) additional SNe II (Ibc). arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.10882v1

SN 2020jgb: A Peculiar Type Ia Supernova Triggered by a Massive Helium-Shell Detonation in a Star-Forming Galaxy by Chang Liu et al. on Monday 12 September The detonation of a thin ($lesssim$0.03,$mathrm{M_odot}$) helium shell (He-shell) atop a $sim$$1,mathrm{M_odot}$ white dwarf (WD) is a promising mechanism to explain normal Type Ia supernovae (SNe,Ia), while thicker He-shells and less massive WDs may explain some recently observed peculiar SNe,Ia. We present observations of SN,2020jgb, a peculiar SN,Ia discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). Near maximum light, SN,2020jgb is slightly subluminous (ZTF $g$-band absolute magnitude $M_g$ between $-18.2$ and $-18.7$,mag depending on the amount of host galaxy extinction) and shows an unusually red color ($g_mathrm{ZTF}-r_mathrm{ZTF}$ between 0.4 and 0.2,mag) due to strong line-blanketing blueward of $sim$5000,AA. These properties resemble those of SN,2018byg, a peculiar SN,Ia consistent with a thick He-shell double detonation (DDet) SN. Using detailed radiative transfer models, we show that the optical spectroscopic and photometric evolution of SN,2020jgb are broadly consistent with a $sim$0.95,$mathrm{M_odot}$ (C/O core + He-shell; up to $sim$1.00,$mathrm{M_odot}$ depending on the total host extinction) progenitor ignited by a thick ($sim$0.13,$mathrm{M_odot}$) He-shell. We detect a prominent absorption feature at $sim$1,micron in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of SN,2020jgb, which could originate from unburnt helium in the outermost ejecta. While the sample size is limited, similar 1,micron features have been detected in all the thick He-shell DDet candidates with NIR spectra obtained to date. SN,2020jgb is also the first subluminous, thick He-shell DDet SN discovered in a star-forming galaxy, indisputably showing that He-shell DDet objects occur in both star-forming and passive galaxies, consistent with the normal SN,Ia population. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.04463v1

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - decided to switch things up a little bit. Instead of doing a normal pre-fall camp podcast, they answered subscriber-submitted questions. Here are the questions that were sent in. When does camp start and what is the practice schedule? Will the coaches use the same policy as in spring ball that resulted in the players getting more reps in practice? Do you believe coaches Jimmy Lake and John Donovan limited the new offensive playbook last year? What do you expect from the offense this year? Which specific position battles are the biggest to watch in fall camp? Not looking for the position group in general, but specific players that are neck and neck for playing time (eg: Sean McGrew vs. Richard Newton) Will the three QB's get even reps to start camp, and if so how long into camp will that last? Who are the new frosh showing up for day 1? Which freshman do you expect to make an impact this year if any? Each year we seem to have a breakout player (ZTF last year) who would you expect that to be this year? Is Taj Davis really a thing now? We have a bunch of 4 stars on the Dline, but has anyone really met expectations yet? What needs to be done to bring excitement back to the program? And before we finished up the pod, Scott gave a quick recruiting update that should have Washington fans on their toes for some good news soon. Learn more about your ad choices. Zion Tupuola-Fetui may be out for a while, but you can't switch off his competitive nature. The outside linebacker was rolling around Wednesday's practice on a scooter for his left leg, recently repaired after an Achilles rupture, but his voice certainly wasn't hurt. After calling out guys during a 1-1 session between the offensive and defensive lines, walk-on OL Gage Harty had heard enough from ZTF. "Watch out, or I'm gonna come over and kick your wheel!" Harty said, laughing. The verbal sparring definitely spilled over to the field, as the guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - ran down the different situations that highlighted Day 13 of Washington's spring football campaign. As per usual, UW Head Coach Jimmy Lake put the team into some unusual situations; second and goal from the 4-yard line with 4 seconds left, down 8. Only one of the quarterbacks was able to get a touchdown and a 2-point conversion - Sam Huard. There was also situations coming out of the end zone that led the defense to win via a safety. But it was the red zone lock out at the end where the energy was bumped up way past 10. The defense ended up winning the period 20-15, but Huard was one completed pass away from spoiling the defense's mood for the day. The Dawgman guys talked about the quarterback battle between Dylan Morris and Patrick O'Brien, as well as Huard slowing coming up for air after having been underwater for most of spring. Talked turned to the defense and some of the standout performances, including those who had interceptions on the day; Kyler Gordon, James Smith, Jacobe Covington, and two picks by Brendan Radley-Hiles, who took one to the house while backup center Corey Luciano chased him all the way. They also talked about Saturday's spring game, one where the fans should expect an actual game to break out. How refreshing! Cade Otton will captain the Purple team, while Jaxson Kirkland will captain the Gold team. The teams have been split up via draft, so hopefully, we'll get a roster we can share with you on game day. Finally, the guys talk about the 2021 NFL Draft, which starts Thursday, and their opinions on where the four Huskies - Levi Onwuzurike, Joe Tryon, Elijah Molden, and Keith Taylor - will get drafted.
