"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." John 10:27    Submit a Podcast Listener Question HERE!    Fr Joseph shares with us about how he got involved in The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and a few of the parallels he sees between CGS and Ignatian Spirituality.  Fr. Joseph Hill, SJ was born in Phoenix, AZ, raised in a Catholic family with his three brothers. At nine years old his family moved to England, where he attended Catholic schools and then the University of Oxford, earning a BA in theology in 2003. In 2004 he entered the Jesuit seminary in south Louisiana. Taking religious vows after two years, he was sent to study philosophy at Fordham University in New York, graduating with an MA in 2009. He then spent three years teaching theology at Jesuit High School, New Orleans. In 2012 he was sent to study theology at FAJE in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, earning a MA in 2014. Then he returned to Boston, earning a MEd at Boston College in 2015. He was ordained a Catholic priest on June 13th, 2015. For one year he worked at Parroquia San Ignacio in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and served as chaplain of Academia San Ignacio parish elementary school. It was in Puerto Rico that he became familiar with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. With the help of two excellent catechists and the school leaders, they implemented CGS Level I in the school. In August 2016 he moved to St. Louis, where he taught and worked in campus ministry at St. Louis University High School. During this time Fr. Hill, SJ completed a Doctor of Education degree from Vanderbilt University. Since July, 2021 he has lived in Tampa, FL, working as a Province vocation promoter.    Growing Seeds     Become a Growing Seed Donor HERE    Growing Seed Donor Form.  Access will also be granted to all existing recurring donors as of January 15, 2025. Super Bowl Week in our home town was definitely one for the books. The City's buzz was real as the whole NFL universe descended upon New Orleans for the big game, and the three of us took part in as many super bowl related events as we could - which, even if they weren't large in number, we definitely had a front row seat to the city putting its best foot forward, which has been met with rave reviews by pretty much any national media outlet and reporter covering the game. So, we recap our own perspectives on what was a great week, including getting the chance to meet the real GOAT, especially of our Saints, Andrew Christopher Brees. We also get into Corey taking on the "Quarterback Scramble" drill at the Super Bowl Experience, which he claims brought back old times in the Jesuit High School backfield. But...did he pick up right where he left off or pick himself up off the turf in front of his daughters?? You'll have to listen in to find out. Also, we dive in a little bit into the Super Bowl itself. Did the Eagles 40 point performance get us more behind the idea of Kellen Moore as the expected next Saints HC or was that more of a "total team" stat? TUNE IN! WHO DAT?!

DescriptionIn Dostoevsky's novel, the Idiot, the character Prince Myshkin declares “Beauty will save the world”, This truth and goodness behind this compelling statement has animated such prominent Catholic theologians as Cardinal Hans urs von Balthasar, Bishop Robert Barron, and many others in our day. And if can be so bold “beauty” might just save our talks too. And in my conversation today with Jimmy Mitchell we not only consider the ways in which this may be true in our preparation AND delivery of talks, but also the unique way beauty transforms us and invites us to be all that God has created us to be. BELIEVING DEEPLY IN the power of beauty to evangelize culture, Jimmy Mitchell's gifts of storytelling and piano-playing have brought him to every corner of the world. On top of being the founder of Love Good, he's the director of campus ministry at Jesuit High School in Tampa, FL, which has repeatedly made national news for its growing culture of conversion.Between his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt and his masters in moral theology, Jimmy has always enjoyed the cross section between faith, artistry, and entrepreneurship. DescriptionA powerful theme emerged throughout this conversation which was “how do you know when to pivot” from what's been planned. AND HOW EXACTLY do you do it? This is one of the hardest skills to master for people new to giving talks in Catholic settings…and there are no hard/fast rules. In each instance…there is a judgment call made, sometimes in just a few seconds to STAY the COURSE or to PIVOT. Brian Greenfield and I dig deep into this question. As you'll see, it takes a whole lot of prayer, preparation, and humility to be confident in making a bold move in the middle of a talk - to go a different direction. Stick around..this is a good one. For most of us, Sunday is the day we attend Mass, setting it aside as our Sabbath. However, once we step out of the church, we often find ourselves caught up in the same rush as any other day. Whether it's catching up on work, running errands, or tackling household chores, we rarely allow ourselves a true day of rest. Travel, shopping, and the endless to-do list can lead us to forget the essential purpose of the Sabbath. The commandment to keep the Sabbath day holy is not just about worship in the morning, but about dedicating the entire day to Him.On episode #170, I spoke with Daniel Fitzpatrick about the significance of restoring the Lord's day. Here are some key questions and topics from our discussion:Cultural Observations: What inspired Daniel to explore the relationship between the Sabbath and societal trends, particularly those he observed in New Orleans?Historical and Literary Influence: How did the works of authors like Homer, Dante, and Evelyn Waugh shape his understanding of the Sabbath and influence the structure of his book?Modern Challenges: In his book, Daniel discusses how modern society mirrors the Pharaohs' obsession with work and anxiety. What does he believe are the root causes of this shift? And much more...Tune in for an insightful conversation!Biography:Daniel Fitzpatrick lives in New Orleans with his wife and four children. He is the author of the novels Only the Lover Sings and First Make Mad. His verse translation of the Divine Comedy, illustrated by Timothy Schmalz, was published in 2021 in honor of the seven hundredth anniversary of Dante's death. Daniel Fitzpatrick and I discuss "Restoring the Lord's Day" his new book, written in a way that is like a balm for the body and the soul. How Reclaiming Sunday will flow over and revive our Human Nature. We live in a culture and  a society in need of healing, and our conversation turned to the sanctuary of Sundays, a day that seems to have lost its sacredness amidst our hectic schedules. As Daniel and I shared personal stories and theological insights, he illuminated the deep-seated yearnings for connection and the spiritual rejuvenation that can be found in the rhythms of the liturgy—reminding us all that the Lord's Day is more than obligation; it's a foundation for a fulfilled life. Daniel Fitzpatrick lives in New Orleans with his wife and four children. He is the author of the novels Only the Lover Sings and First Make Mad. For our first episode of Season 6, we are thrilled to welcome back to the podcast our former co-host, Louie Hotop, SJ, who is the Assistant Principal for Mission at Arrupe Jesuit High School in Denver, CO. Louie is helping us launch the Lenten theme for this season by sharing the moving experience of celebrating Ash Wednesday in the camp in Matamoros last year. He reflects on the theme of repentance as we enter Lent, and shares stories of some of the people whom he continues to carry with him even as he has moved on from the border. Plus, he talks about the time he heard confessions while sitting on an overturned bucket crammed between tents in a migrant camp. In this episode, Brian and Joe talk about moments of repentance and God's healing mercy. Joe reflects on the importance of discernment with feelings of guilt and sin. He shares the story of a young girl carrying a guilt that she needed to free herself from, to be able to see the way God was looking on her with love. Brian shares a time he responded uncharitably over text in a conversation with Yurlin, a pregnant woman who was in Reynosa. It didn't take long for him to remember that a pregnant single mother of two young girls living in a shelter in northern Mexico deserves a little more compassion and respect!

No matter how large or small the company, the characteristics, emotional intelligence, and general mood of the leader inevitably impacts the entire operation. In fact, that correlation between the mood of the leader (CEO, president, owner, etc.) and the bottomline performance of the company has been proven in several studies. Pascal Renders has been at the forefront of this type of work, as a consultant for large corporations, particularly in his years in Belgium, where he garnered a reputation for getting deep and personal with business leaders to address areas of struggle. A transpersonal psychotherapist, Pascal believes in a holistic view of addressing systemic problems within organizations and that if you do not deal with the deep underlying issues, behavioral patterns of company leaders will continue no matter how an organization may shake up personnel or its structure. This is one of the most interesting conversations I have had in regard to leadership, which is a topic we often delve into on the podcast. It's definitely worth the listen! Also in this episode, we cover: "bad bosses," the ineffectiveness of typical corporate approaches to instilling values and company culture, compartmentalizing and the pitfalls of it, catastrophic team-building sessions, respect for employees, challenging his future wife, Alexandra, to align her company with her own values, discovering a new modality to address trauma, Pascal's work with individuals and couples, the mind vs. the brain, family constellations, generational trauma, emotional intelligence, HeartMath, his organization United Inner States of Freedom, bringing the best out of people and much more.I hope you'll enjoy my conversation with Pascal Renders. Pascal's bio: A native of Belgium, Pascal is a dynamic, multi-lingual professional well versed in a wide variety of business functions. Coach C. Collins is ready to talk more AAU basketball, life and everything in between. In this episode, the coach had a chance to sit down with Rahid "Shine" and Andrej Stojakovic(Son of former NBA player Peja Stojakovic). In this episode we got to really breakdown the journey to become a high level basketball player but also the relationship between player and trainer.  With guys like Phil Handy and Lebron James showcasing the importance of a lead trainer and player relationship, the trust that is needed for this to work is key for the athlete to reach there full potential. Andrej has had a breakout career the past two seasons at Jesuit High School becoming a McDonalds All-American, leading Jesuit as a captain and scoring also playing for the famous Compton Magic AAU program on the adidas 3ssb circuit.  Shine has been with him every step of the way and with Andrej committing to Stanford university along with Jesuit Alumni Isa Silva, both trained by Shine, this creates a culture and legacy the show wants to talk more about. ------------------------------ If you wish to support the show Podbean Patron: https://patron.podbean.com/boutthatlifeaau Patreon Account: https://www.patreon.com/join/Boutthatlife? Seeing Adversity as a Gift with Robert Paylor  Denise talks to professional motivational speaker Robert Paylor, who inspires millions with his message of hope, courage, and unwavering determination. Paylor is living proof that with discipline and a strong support team, we can achieve the impossible. He uses the story of the best day of his life, also the day of his greatest tragedy, as his driving purpose to help others.  At 6' 5” the Sacramento native was naturally strong and a gifted athlete. His love for contact sports led him to rugby, first as a student at Jesuit High School, the number one ranked team in the nation. A natural born leader, captain of the team, Paylor and his team won a lot of hardware. As a college student at UC Berkeley, he earned a starting position on the legendary Men's Rugby Team, which has won 33 national championships.  May 6, 2017 his team was competing in the Collegiate Rugby National Championship against Arkansas State. As a big guy, Paylor was accustomed to being in a maul where three or more players push against one another. There are strict rules about mauls, one being that players are not allowed to join from the side. As the opposing team continued to make illegal moves, Paylor found himself in a tight headlock and was pushed to the ground. He heard a “snap” and in an instant was face down, in the dirt, unable to move.  He suffered severe injuries to his spinal cord and doctors told him he'd never walk again, let alone move his hands. Faced with whether to have a potentially life-threatening surgery he contacted his priest. A devout Catholic, Paylor wanted to make sure he could receive the Sacrament of Last Rites. He was given 30 minutes to decide.  In this inspirational conversation, Paylor pays forward the advice he's been given, and the strategies he uses to keep making progress. As his priest told him right before his surgery, “The one thing you have control over is your mindset…Your willingness to wake up every day and fight this is up to you and this injury can't take that away from you.”  Paylor found the courage to face his fear of a body—and a future—he didn't recognize. He says he sleeps peacefully knowing he gives every day all he has. When he doesn't feel like exerting the effort to simply get out of bed in the morning, he remembers that millions of people feel just like he does. When he faces difficulty, he asks himself, “Compared to what?” not to dismiss his challenges but to overcome them.  The single best catalyst to leaping those mental hurdles comes from knowing that when he stays strong, others can stay strong too. Instilled by his faith and engrained by athletics, Paylor is inspired by the words of his UC rugby coach and friend Jack Clark, “Be grateful for everything and entitled to nothing.”  To book Paylor and follow him on social media go to www.robertpaylor.com.   Setup by a friend to pay for uncovered medical expenses, visit his healing and rehab GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/f/robertpaylor.  ***  Robert Paylor is a motivational speaker who shares the skills he uses to overcome quadriplegia and go from paralyzed to powerful. The former 2017 UC Berkeley Men's Rugby Team player uses a life-changing injury to fuel his purpose of inspiring others to reach their full potential. Four years after he was told he would never walk again, Paylor walked with assistance across the stage to receive his diploma from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business. Paylor still resides in California, enjoys the outdoors, barbequing, hikes, the water—and still loves rugby.   Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years.  As a mother, lawyer, entrepreneur, devoted community servant and tireless advocate for women and children, she learned early, from her father, that everyone is worthy of contributing to the world.  Her passion for affordable, accessible, quality education stems from her own experience as a first-generation student, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves on the Board of Regents, and a law degree from the University of Detroit Law School.  FOLLOW DENISE @thedeniseilitchshow  TO LEARN MORE about all our inspiring podcasts visit https://www.lifestough.com/.

Tim lives in Stoughton, Wisconsin with his wife and two adult children. Originally from Toledo, Ohio, Tim moved to Wisconsin over 23 years ago to marry Tracy. He graduated from St. John's Jesuit High School in 1983 and began attending the only college he ever wanted to go to–Ohio Northern University (ONU) where his grandfather was a leader in the Psychology Department. At ONU Tim studied Philosophy and Religion and Psychology while being involved in Sigma Theta Epsilon (Christian Service Fraternity), a faculty/student choir and with traveling ministry teams (Son's Rays and a failed attempt at puppetry.) Unfortunately Tim was only able to spend two years at ONU (for details, you can have him speak on growing up a child in an alcoholic household and becoming an alcoholic himself.) Tim transferred to Bowling Green State University (BGSU) and graduated (barely) in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Philosophy. While at BGSU Tim was active in campus ministry and served as Youth Director for a local parish while volunteering with the Diocese of Toledo. The highlight of his BGSU career was listening to Mr. Rogers speak at his graduation ceremony. Tim spent time as Director of Pastoral Concerns and religion teacher at a local high school, as an early childhood educator and as a substance abuse counselor before being accepted into the Masters program at John Carroll University (Ohio) in 1990 and earning his Masters in Counseling in 1993. While at John Carroll (JCU), Tim was also involved in numerous volunteer activities including an outreach to Appalachia. He also received the Magis Award from the Student Council of JCU. After a year of working as a College Counselor and Hall Director in Ohio, Tim moved to West Virginia to volunteer on a Catholic Worker Farm. While there, a friend introduced him (over the phone) to the wonderful woman who would become his wife. Tim moved to Wisconsin in 1995 and Tracy and he were married that same year. They were blessed with Hunter being born in 1997 and Sami in 1999. Since moving to Wisconsin, Tim has worked in early childhood education; in customer service at Davis Duehr Dean; in Quality Assurance at Epic Systems; as an Office Manager at LakeView Church and as a House Father for the Elizabeth House. Ten years ago Tim was hired as an Outreach Specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Waisman Center where he currently works as the Director of the Southern Regional Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs, Family Discipline Coordinator for the WI LEND program and as a senior outreach specialist with the Youth Health Transition Initiative. In 2014, Tim finally finished a 10+year journey when he earned a Master of Arts in Christian Studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Illinois). As his capstone project Tim combined the scientific research around forgiveness and his faith background's belief in forgiveness to develop an eight week course centered on why forgiveness is necessary and how to forgive. Since then Tim has taught about forgiveness at Stoughton Hospital, Lifest, area churches, local and statewide mental/behavioral health conferences, an aging conference, on the radio and at educator wellness events. Tim's brings a unique perspective through sharing his personal journey through childhood trauma, alcoholism, betrayals, misunderstandings, mental health challenges and life. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/normalizetheconversation/support
