POPULARITY
Today's guests exemplify the virtue of patience. Please welcome Jim Suhler and Buddy Whittington of the band Texas Scratch. Their debut album was released recently…14 years AFTER it was recorded. And if you're asking why, I'm not even sure the band can answer that. Texas Scratch is a Texas blues album that was recorded in New Jersey. Maybe that's why it took so long…the universe couldn't believe such a great blues album could have been made in the Northeast. Jim and Buddy have played with some incredible musicians like John Mayall, George Thorogood, AC/DC, Joe Bonamassa, Billy Gibbons, and more. Speaking of Billy Gibbons, Jim reveals the very special place Billy has in his marriage. So we start off talking, like we usually do, about each guitarists musical history; what inspired them to play guitar, how they started professionally, and how they found their current gigs. But the most amazing part is how the whole Texas Scratch album came together, almost spontaneously, and how it stalled after it was slated for release. Go get the album from Quarto Valley records, Amazon, Itunes, Apple music, or wherever you get music these days. Follow them on Facebook and maybe Instagram at this point. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. You can send coffee money to ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. You can get merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Now prime your ears for some killer blues and a debut album that is very late to the party on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices. Iconic blues guitarist Jim Suhler makes his debut on the show as he talks about playing with George Thorogood and the Destroyers for the past 20-plus years as well as his band Texas Scratch and their debut album which is available now. Quarto Valley recording artist Texas Scratch is a blues band consisting of Texas guitar slingers' Jim Suhler (George Thorogood and the Destroyers) and Buddy Whittington (John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) and the driving drum beat of Jeff Simon (George Thorogood and the Destroyers) with the help of their friends - Texas guitarist Vince Converse, drummer Roger Earl (Foghat/Savoy Brown) and bassists' Nathaniel Peterson and Kirk Yano.
Texas Scratch is made up of three born-and-bred Texas guitarists – Jim Suhler from Dallas, Buddy Whittington from Fort Worth and Vince Converse from Houston. This mighty threesome of big dog guitar slingers takes no prisoners when it comes to red-hot guitar performances, both live and in-studio.This trio of six-string guitar beasts are accompanied on the album by drummer Jeff Simon and bassist Nathaniel Peterson, both fine musicians in their own right. The band's name derives from the term Texas scratch, which is a style of guitar picking (also known as the Carter Scratch) said to have originated by Mother Maybelle Carter back in 1927.Their combined efforts have resulted in a debut album consisting of – obviously - fiery, passionate guitar licks everywhere you turn, soaked in the blues and kicked in the ass by the blues-rock they all love to play. One can hear the mutual sense of love and joy for the music in the band's playing and singing together. But, given the level of talent in this band, none of the musical goodness that flows from this album should come as any surprise.Suhler's and Simon's day jobs are longtime members of George Thorogood and the Destroyers…in fact, Simon is an original member of The Destroyers (he co-founded the band with Thorogood in 1973) and Suhler has been a Destroyer since 1999. Suhler is also a founding member of the band Monkey Beat since 1991.Whittington recorded and toured with blues legend John Mayall for 15 years before heading off to an acclaimed solo recording and touring career in 2008 that continues to this day. Converse made his bones with heavy blues-rock power trio Sunset Heights, touring with acts like Johnny Winter, Peter Green, Fats Domino, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. A devoted blues musician, he now kicks ass with his band, Vince Converse and Big Brother. And Nathaniel Peterson shone brightly as a member of Savoy Brown. For one reason or another through the years -- be it music industry woes, conflicting gigs, budget issues, and most recently, the pandemic -- this hot blues album never got its release. That didn't stop the stories from spreading throughout the music world about what a tremendous album this was. We're thrilled to be the label that finally releases this legendary album,” says Quarto Valley Records President & CEO Bruce Quarto. “Texas plays such an integral role in the history of blues music. So many great blues musicians hail from the Lonestar State - Freddie King, Lightnin' Hopkins, T Bone Walker, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Stevie Rae Vaughn and Billy Gibbons -- just to name a few. Our guest on this episode of Guitar Slingers is Jim Suhler. Jim is an excellent musician and performer. He's traveled the world the last 20 years playing guitar with George Thorogood. Most of all, he's a super nice guy and I enjoyed talking music with him. Email me if you have any comments or show ideas to jack@jackbarksdale.com.
Since 1975, they've sold over 15 million albums, built a classic catalog of hits, and played more than 8,000 ferocious live shows. They broke records with their 50 Dates/50 States tour, delivered landmark performances at Live Aid and on SNL, and became mainstays of radio, MTV and stages worldwide for more than two generations. Through it all, they've remained one of the most consistent – and consistently passionate – progenitors of blues-based rock in pop culture history. For the past 45 years, it's been very good to be George Thorogood & The Destroyers. And in 2020, their Good To Be Bad Tour: 45 Years Of Rock will prove why like never before.“If you're content, you may as well be dead.” George laughs with his familiar rasp. “I think everyone has thoughts about retiring, but the phone keeps ringing. You want me and The Destroyers to come to your town, set up our gear, wear some badass clothes and play ‘Who Do You Love?' End of conversation. Let's rock!”For Thorogood and his longtime band – Jeff Simon (drums, percussion), Bill Blough (bass guitar), Jim Suhler (rhythm guitar) and Buddy Leach (saxophone) – the power to rock audiences has been both battle cry and creed since forming in 1974. “It wasn't about the amount of people we drew, but rather the impression we made,” George remembers. “I asked myself, ‘Are we reaching them? Do they want more?' And we knew from the very first set that we had something special.”It's on stage that George & The Destroyers flip the switch nightly, delivering what The Toledo Blade calls “a gut-bustin', guitar-wailin', face-meltin', fiery-tempoed, take-no-prisoners, good old-fashioned lunch-bucket rock & roll show” that includes their signature hits “Get A Haircut”, “I Drink Alone”, “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”, “Move It On Over”, “Who Do You Love” and the definitive badass anthem “Bad To The Bone”, along with several surprises. “It's been a constant evolution to make the show all killer, no filler,” explains 43-year Destroyer bassist Bill Blough. “Something still inherently clicks the second we step on stage. We feel the audience's energy and the show just explodes.”But after 45 years of rock – and no signs of stopping – can Thorogood point to what continues to make it all matter? “My highlight is every night when I walk on that stage and play our hits for those happy people,” he says. “At the end of the show, the audience is smiling, I don't see any police and everyone got their money's worth.”More importantly, is it still good to be bad? George Thorogood instantly flashes that huge grin. “You bet it is,” he says. ”We'll always be the baddest band in the land. Expect our best on this tour, because that's what you're gonna get.”

It is no wonder that the band has worked with noted producers Terry Manning (ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, Stax Records), Jim Gaines (Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan) and Grammy Award-winning producer/songwriter Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, George Thorogood). Jim Suhler also plays as lead guitarist with George Thorogood & the Destroyers and is a multiple nominee in the Dallas Observer Music Awards and is a member of Buddy magazine’s “Texas Tornado Hall of Fame.” Jackie Venson Texas-based Jackie Venson is a Berklee College of music classical music graduate who took up blues rock guitar and blows the roof off every venue she plays in US or Europe. Trained in classical piano, Venson has multi-instrumental chops plus a voice that can drip with sensual emotion or belt with blues. Venson picked up the guitar shortly after graduating from Berklee and made the giant leap from classical music to the raw and gritty blues and never looked back. Enthralled with music since the age of 8, this young singer/songwriter/musician has a vibrant musical soul and precise technical control of her instruments. She blends and bends Blues, Rock, R&B, Soul with her introspective lyrics into music that led to a Jackie Venson Day in Austin.
SHOW #328 We open the show speaking with Cindy MacLeod from The Calgary International Blues Festival. A Festival Partner with Music On The Couch, this week long event brings the best of the blues to the beautiful city of Calgary. The Hitman Blues Band has a brand new album entitled, The World Moves On. Russell Alexander returns to The Couch to talk about the music and what has been going on with the band since their visit in April 2013. Jim Suhler last sat on The Couch in February 2014 when Panther Burn was released. His new album, Live At The Kessler Theater will be released in June and he will come by to talk about the live recording and where he is headed. Bill Phillippe sat with me in March of 2015 when Ghosts was released. He returned to talk about the fund-raising campaign for the new album Parade. Now he returns with the finished product and we will talk about the entire recording process and where he is heading. Sugar Blue and I missed when he was scheduled to be on the show a few weeks back.
