When the wreckage is found, Sir John is gravely injured, and a woman is discovered unconscious wearing a valuable ring. As the woman regains consciousness in a strange house, she grapples with fragmented memories of the accident, unsettling dreams of a child in peril, and a deep mystery tied to the ring on her finger. Surrounded by unfamiliar faces and haunted by a sense of foreboding, the survivor realizes she cannot trust anyone and must uncover the truth of what happened that stormy night, even as danger mounts and enemies conspire against her. Sometimes I nerd out and assign the jersey number of one of my favorite (current or former) players from one of my favorite teams to the episode I'm posting about. So, for Episode No. 89, the default move would be to go Otis Taylor. I could also throw in Jason "Big Diesel" Dunn or Keith Cash, but -- since Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes came up in this episode's conversation, it's gotta be the Andre Rison episode. And what a trip this episode was. Figuratively and literally. My guest Dan Henk is a trip. And his story's especially a trip. And while he's a boyfriend and a business owner, an author and a podcast host, a cancer survivor and a widower, getting to Dan was no short trip, either.Yes, that's right. Detective Dumbass here thought it'd be a good idea to travel outside of my home region to interview a guest. I had two folks in L.A. and one in Chicago involved in talks, but the one that wound up working was none other than one of the owners of Abyss Fine Art & Tattoo Studio in Long Beach, NY. So, on two hours of sleep, I took a 7:00 a.m. flight to Queens, Ubered to Mr. Henk's joint, set up, interviewed him, broke down, Ubered back to JFK, and caught a 7:00 p.m. flight back to KC.And my back still hurts.Regardless...it was a fun adventure, and I'm grateful to Dan for sharing his time and his spot to let me roll in and talk life and music with him.In addition to talking about Dan's story, we also talked about a few of his favorite records. Those were these:Metallica's Ride the Lightning (1984)Atomizer (1985), Big BlackSlayer's Reign in Blood (1986)...For Victory (1994), Bolt ThrowerDeadguy's Fixation on a Co-Worker (1995)It was good times and aggressive oldies.Check out Dan's Web site, though. Give his podcast a gander. Peep his spot, toss him an Instagram follow, and shop his list of publications. Guy's a content machine. Thanks for viewing, listening, reading, and -- above all -- being you.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained in this episode. As a follow up to S3 Ep1, this episode features a concert by Lionel Young, Roy Hightower, and Otis Taylor recorded live directly following the audio drama The Tale of Stackalee. Lionel Young Mr. Young has won numerous awards including The Young Artist Award (Pittsburgh Symphony); The Concerto Contest (Carnegie-Mellon); The Passamenic Award (Branchwood String Quartet); and the award for the Best Blues Band in Westword's Best of Denver. He's also won a position with The Denver Chamber Orchestra and premiered a solo piece by William Hill. Lionel has had the honor of working with such show biz luminaries as: Count Basie, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Paige/Robert Plant, Doc Severenson, Linda Ronstadt, Living Color, Billy Taylor. Otis Taylor, Since 2009's award-winning Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs, Taylor has released five more celebrated albums and his music has been included in Hollywood and foreign movie soundtracks and television shows including Shooter and Public Enemies. Personal highlights of Taylor's career were when he was an answer in the New York Times crossword puzzle in 2009, and in 2016 Taylor was proud to be included in the inaugural exhibition of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. Roy Hightower Well-regarded as a blues guitarist and soulful singer around Chicago, Roy Hightower has carved out an equally impressive niche as an actor in various Windy City musical productions. Among his starring roles: portraying Muddy Waters and Otis Redding. Even in death, the larger-than-life figure of Stagger Lee triumphs. It is unfathomable why the obscure murder of a levee hand in a red-light bar would attain such far-reaching notoriety, while songs about equally sordid killings—fact-based murder ballads such as “Ella Speed” and “Duncan and Brady”—are doomed to relative obscurity. Nonetheless, “Stagger Lee” spread with extraordinary speed, beginning shortly after the actual killing. It was soon being sung in various forms by workers on the levee, convicts on chain gangs throughout the South, saloon and street singers, and even school children. Soon, the musical, mythical iteration of “Stack Lee” supplanted the man himself, as black America cultivated and nurtured a heroic outlaw to admire. As a man, the lowlife pimp and murderer Lee Shelton has all but sunk into obscurity. However, as raised up by more than a century of popular culture, the righteous killer Stagger Lee has become an icon to generations, who see in the folk character defiance of authority, pride of self, and strength in the face of adversity. In this episode we hear Richard Dunham take on this larger-than-life figure. Stackalee or Stagger Lee is filled with the amazing blues soundscape from Lionel Young, Roy Hightower, and Otis Taylor. The Ballad of Satchel Paige: This is donnie betts producer-director of Destination Freedom Black Radio Days. From Time to time we like to share with you one of our shows from our archives. Here is a special one. This Episode features Lionel Young winner of the 2008 and 2011 International Blues Challenge plus numerous classical and blues awards. The EP also features Blues the great Otis Taylor and his daughter Cassie. Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige (July 7, 1906 – June 8, 1982) was an American professional baseball pitcher who played in Negro league baseball and Major League Baseball (MLB). His career spanned five decades and culminated with his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. A right-handed pitcher, Paige first played for the semi-professional Mobile Tigers from 1924 to 1926. He began his professional baseball career in 1926 with the Chattanooga Black Lookouts of the Negro Southern League and became one of the most famous and successful players from the Negro leagues. On town tours across the United States, Paige would sometimes have his infielders sit down behind him and then routinely strike out the side.[3] At age 42 in 1948, Paige made his debut for the Cleveland Indians; to this day, this makes him the oldest debutant in the National League or American League history. In this episode, Jerrell speaks with guitar player, singer, and songwriter Taylor Scott. "Taylor Scott grew up beneath the wide skies of the rural American West, where a childhood appreciation for country music — whose twangy textures seemed to reflect his surroundings — soon gave way to an obsession with rebellious, guitar-driven rock & roll. Shortly after graduation, he was recruited by Otis Taylor to join the blues legend's band. What followed was a whirlwind of international tour dates, with Scott spending four years as Taylor's guitarist." When California became a state in 1850, it entered the union as a state that would not allow slavery. That's the history most people know. But in reality, California did allow slavery and its early leaders sided with the South and the rights of enslavers through a litany of early laws. The effects of that racist foundation are still being felt by people of color in California today. Additional Reading: California Celebrates Its History As a 'Free State.' Today's guest is songwriter, performer, and virtuoso guitarist, Taylor Scott. We go back 8ish years to the Snowy Range Music Festival in Laramie, WY (RIP!). We met through our mutual friend, Nic Clark (episodes 5 and 31), and ended up forming a "songwriter in round" group called, Sydow, Scott & Clark. We never broke up, we just stopped playing shows. Taylor spent his earliest years in St. Louis, MO before moving to Cheyenne, WY with his family as a kid. At the age of nine, he became enamored with the guitar, and discovered he was pretty good at it too. He was invited to tour with a blues band right out of high school and soon after was invited to be the touring guitarist with award winning Trace-Blues artist, Otis Taylor. 2019 saw the release of Taylor Scott Band's latest studio album, All We Have. It was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos. In support of the album, he toured with his band opening for Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Along the way, Scott and his band recorded their live set at the Belly Up in Solana Beach, CA. That was released on all streaming platforms back in September, 2020. In our conversation, we chat about all of this plus his personal story, and what it's like to finally get to a level where you have a team (booking agent, manager etc.) helping push your music.
